CHARITY DRAW FOR UNIQUE ARTWORK LAUNCHED

Cllr Robin Cook, Chairman of East Dorset District Council, has launched a prize draw to support his chosen charities, the Alzheimer’s Society and The Friends of Victoria Hospital Wimborne. Entries at £2 each will give a chance of winning a unique piece of artwork by local Silk Weaver, Debby Kirby, who is based at Walford Mill Crafts, Wimborne. After recently taking up cycling, Debby’s husband Jez, documents in pictures his travels around the Dorset countryside. His aim is to capture a moment in time – light, the movement of water and the changing seasons, are all points of inspiration to him. This results in a great catalogue of images, from which Debby selects those that inspire her and she dyes the silk threads to complement each piece. Every picture is therefore individual, as this is a process that cannot be replicated. This collaboration has provided Debby with a new appreciation of the landscape and H ]LY` KPɈLYLU[ ^H` VM PUJVYWVYH[PUN WOV[VNYHWO` PU[V [L_[PSLZ The picture you could win is of Dorset’s Jurassic Coast, donated by Debby and framed courtesy of Lorraine from Wimborne Picture Framing. Ann – It’s a brilliant list of people though... Engelbert – “It is, and so many I enjoyed Smokey Robinson, Neil Sedaka and Gene Simmons... all were so helpful, and together I am very blessed with this album. It’s the album that I think will define me in years to come... Well hopefully.” Ann – It’s been well received and already a huge chart hit – thoughts? Engelbert – “You know Ann every album is always a worry, but to get this kind of reaction at this stage of my career is simply super, I had no idea, and we have been so stunned in that respect, but it’s also so nice... Ann – What is next for you? Engelbert – “I am touring again and doing dates all over the world, I love to travel, and never tire of it, but then after that starting work on the next album, which is going to be called ”Engelbert Redialled“ as we have more duets that we could not fit on the first album, I am touring so look out for dates, and then we start recording again.” Ann – Finally a message for your fans here in the UK... Remember the late great Dickie Valentine... well he had to pull out of the TV show “Sunday Night at the London Palladium “ and they gave me the slot. He thanked me for helping him out, and that really was the start of it all. You could say in fact it’s because of him I am here today... PALS Our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS), based in the main atrium of the Royal Bournemouth Hospital, offers advice, handles complaints and helps solve a range of issues. Their office has been redesigned recently so patients and visitors can drop in and sit with a member of the team, rather than talking to them at a counter. PALS Co-ordinator, Jennie Moffat, says: “We wanted to make it more open and welcoming but also to be able to provide an environment where people who want to talk more privately, can.” The team have also recently worked with The Patients Association to learn more about complaints and are working closely with the wards to encourage staff to deal with any issues on the spot. Jennie says: “We’re a friendly and approachable team and I feel we do make a difference to the patients. “We also get patients who come in and say ‘are you here so we can say thank you as well?’, and that’s really encouraging.”
Mike Horey, Porter “One of the best parts of the job is getting to know patients and their backgrounds. Often you build good relationships with those who are in the hospital for a significant length of time, and you become their first port of call for advice, reassurance and stress release. Some just want a friendly pair of ears.u Steve Grant-Foale loves his job as a volunteer, greeting and helping patients and visitors. “Several years ago I had serious brain surgery which saved my life, so I wanted to give something back to say thank you. Many of our patients and visitors are coming into an unfamiliar environment and feel nervous about this. They may also be feeling very unwell so it’s important to me to help them feel more comfortable and relaxed. I can also share my own experience of being a patient to reassure them.”

Batty about Bats During their existence on earth through several millennia, bats with their silent flight and mythical reputation have left few cultures indifferent. They feature in folklore across the globe, both revered and feared, but rarely understood as the remarkable mammals that they are. Bats are the only true flying mammals on the planet and locate their prey using a sophisticated system known as echolocation. They are elusive nocturnal creatures, and, despite their close proximity to human habitats, difficult to spot, partly because the sounds that they make are too high pitched for the human ear. Contrary to popular belief, bats are not blind but have relatively good eyesight. There are over 1000 species of bats world wide, and 17 species of breeding bats in Britain. Of these, the pipistrelles, the brown long-eared bat and the noctule are the most common. All British bats are strict insect eaters, capable of devouring up to 3000 insects a night, from midges and moths to mosquitoes. Bats roost in various habitats, from hollow trees and caves to houses and churches. They often use different locations at different times of year, depending on their roosting needs. Bats are important to the food chain but have decreased in numbers due to loss of habitat and excessive use of insecticides, which has diminished their food sources. Bats are protected in the UK, and it is illegal to disturb or injure them or their roosting sites in any way. Bats rarely cause any damage to houses, but as winter approaches, they get ready to hibernate, and you may find a bat that has chosen
your loft for its winter retreat. If you find an injured bat or need help with bats, ring the Bat Conservation helpline on 0845 1300 228. A LPA is a legal document which allows you to appoint a trusted person(s) to run your affairs if you are incapacitated due to illness or accident or for any other reason (non-illness related). You can appoint up to 4 persons and appoint replacements - these persons are called your “Attorneys” and can be any persons of your choice. They are usually a friend or family member but can be a professional such as your solicitor.
Your attorneys cannot do whatever they like – they must follow the principles of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (this includes helping you to make as many of your own decisions as possible. They cannot presume you cannot make your own decisions just because you have made an unwise decision etc).

I am buying a property and my son, who is 19, will be living with me. He is not buying the property with me but my mortgage lender wants him to sign a Deed of Postponement or Waiver. Why is this? As you are buying the property, you will sign the Mortgage Deed and by doing so agree to the terms and conditions of the mortgage, including repayment of the capital and interest. If you fail to make the repayments, the Lender may evict you under the terms of the Mortgage. If you have an adult who permanently resides at the property with you, although he is not on the legal title and has not signed the mortgage deed, he may have rights as an occupier and it will be difficult for the Lender to evict him. The
You can only set up an LPA while you have the mental capacity to make decisions. If you become mentally unable to make your own decisions, the Courts will appoint a Deputy to work on your behalf. A Deputy works very much like an Attorney, but has the added complexity of strict Court oversight and involvement (which results in the inevitable extra costs and delays for you in the long run). Lender, therefore, requires your son to sign the Deed of Postponement to state that he is aware that you purchased the property with the aid of a mortgage and that should you fail to make the repayments and you are evicted, he will leave the property with you and have no legal right over and above the Lender’s right to possession. A Lender will not give a mortgage advance until a Deed of Postponement has been signed by any permanent adult occupier. Inspirational local images to feature in
Landscape Photographer of the Year exhibition This autumn’s Landscape Photographer of the Year exhibition at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest, near Ringwood will feature six award-winning and commended Dorset images alongside around 100 images of stunning countryside from all over Great Britain. Running from 11 October until 23 November, visitors to the exhibition will be able to see the work of some of the best landscape photographers in the country free-of-charge, chosen from thousands of entrants to the national Take a view – Landscape Photographer of the Year competition.
Jake Pike Alongside other inspirational local images, the exhibition includes a stunning shot of the Jurassic Coast taken by local teenager Jake Pike, which won the Youth Classic View category. Other commended and highly commended Dorset images include photographs of the iconic Corfe Castle, Southbourne Beach, Parkstone and a glorious ZOV[ VM :[\YTPUZ[LY 5L^[VU 4PSS YLÅLJ[PUN PU [V the River Stour taken by Mark Simpson. As well as exhibiting his image, Mark will be presenting an illustrated talk about his photographs at Moors Valley from 7pm on 6J[VILY H[ [OL VɉJPHS VWLUPUN VM [OL exhibition. A limited number of tickets at £5 are now available. Before becoming a landscape photographer he spent 15 years covering professional motorsport and his talk will cover his photographic journey from the roar of the engine to the serenity of the landscape world. The competition has played a pivotal role in regenerating interest in landscape photography in recent years and 2014’s winners will be announced later this year. “You’re never short of inspiration when you explore the endless variety of landscapes found in our wonderful islands,” said Charlie. “And there is joy to be had in photographing these landscapes”. East Dorset residents asked for views on proposed parish changes Residents in East Dorset are being asked for their views on a public consultation including proposals to change some parish and town council boundaries. The consultation, which is open until 7 November 2014, will give residents the chance to comment on draft recommendations that have come about following a previous consultation carried out between April and July 2014. Parish and town councils were invited to put forward submissions during that consultation and those submissions have been taken into account when drawing up the draft recommendations. Submissions included suggested changes in boundaries, reductions in the number of parish councillors or the removal of wards within a parish. The aim of the review is to improve local democracy and ensure better cohesion of communities across the district. It is also designed to address inconsistencies in the ratios of electors to councillors. Each parish has been addressed separately, though some recommendations include changes which would affect neighbouring parishes. Draft recommendations include some changes to the boundaries of Ferndown, West Parley, Colehill and Wimborne including the transfer of: r properties at Stapehill West from Ferndown to Colehill r properties in Colehill West, Colehill Lacey and Colehill Parmiter to Wimborne r properties in Barrack Road, Ferndown to West Parley
There is also a proposal to transfer properties in Horton East to Verwood. Other proposals include the reduction in parish or town councillors in Ferndown from 23 to 19, in Colehill from 15 to 11, in West Moors from 15 to 12, in Corfe Mullen from 16 to 14 and in St Leonards & St Ives from 13 to 12. An increase in town councillors in Wimborne from 12 to 16 is also proposed. at the 2014 Dorset Plane Pull
The 6th Dorset Plane Pull saw more than fifteen teams enlisted to pull a Boeing 737 a muscle busting 50 metres at Bournemouth Airport. Three of those teams were pulling and raising money for the JTYAF and many of their team members have been supporting the event and the charity for many years.

Well the cadets were not to be put off and on their second attempt managed a pretty tidy pull in just over a minute. A big thank you to Team BCFT who were sadly unable to join us on the rearranged day but still managed to raise a fantastic £444 in sponsorship. Rus Jolley and his team from ‘The Conditioning Centre‘ were the second JTYAF team to pull and they came in as runners up in a fantastic 43 seconds, pipped to the finishing line by this year and last year’s winners, ‘Al of a Pull.’

Well done and thank you to all the team members and especially to Chris Morson, Rus Jolley and Chris Symonds who organised everyone, making sure that they had their ID on the day. A huge thank you to Richard Griffin, Peter, Kyrie and Carl Feltham and to all the Plane Pull team as this is one huge event to organise and they do a fantastic job, juggling their full time jobs alongside a massive amount of preparation. The cadets from 2358 (Ferndown) and 130 (Bournemouth) Squadrons of the Air Training Corps have been supporting the event since it started in 2009 and their help is crucial to the success of the event and we can’t thank them enough. FURLEIGH ESTATE vineyard & winery expected to enjoy a
bumper harvest this autumn
English vineyard and winery Furleigh Estate is expecting its best-ever harvest this autumn, and has estimated that it will produce approximately 100,000 bottles of award-winning, still and sparkling wine as a result.
This year’s harvest is anticipated to be twice as large as the previous record yield, in 2010. What’s more, in one of its vineyards the crop is predicted to be even bigger than the total sum of all of the previous harvests, as a result of two consecutive years of great summer weather. Situated in Salway Ash in West Dorset, this former dairy farm is owned and managed by husband and wife team, Rebecca Hansford and Ian Edwards. The couple planted their first vine just over nine years ago in 2005. Today, more than 22,000 Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier vines grow on the south-facing slopes of the Estate. Rebecca Hansford, owner of Furleigh Estate, said: “We are so
excited about this year’s bumper harvest. It’s come at a significant time for us as we enter our 10th year as a working vineyard and winery. “A dry Glastonbury festival and a warm Wimbledon are usually reliable indicators that the grape harvest is going to be good, so we’ve had high hopes since the start of the summer. We are so fortunate that the English climate has been kind to the vines this season!” Harvest takes place over three weeks from mid-October. The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Well Nellie, the Dorset Publications Campervan was very excited about this one. She was going to take Grandma on a ‘mystery’ 70th Birthday treat. Grandma had no idea where she was going, let alone what she would be doing. Grandma and Grandad live all the way up North in Hull and often come to visit, but living so close to Bournemouth with our beautiful beaches we don’t always make the most of it. So, my sister and I did some plotting a scheming and decided a trip to the seaside would be just what Mum and Dad would love. It was kept as a very guarded secret and even Hayden, our ten year old son, would not give the game away, when asked many questions by a playful Grandma and Grandad. The day came and we set off in Nellie. Lady J, my sister’s and brother-in-law’s rather nice Jaguar followed closely behind. The weather was good, the sun was shining and Grandma and Grandad were sitting, a little perplexed, clutching a rather large suitcase which was ready for anything I think! Nellie was in her element. We drove along the sea front and arrived at our destination - The Cumberland Hotel,

Where will Nellie be taking me? which is part of the Oceana Hotels and a grand looking building right on the cliff top in Bournemouth. Dad’s mouth was open, but for once and believe me this is rare, he was not able to speak. Mum stood in amazement. We were a little early and so were treated to a complimentary drink at the pool side while our sea view rooms were prepared. Nellie was kept on guard in the car park. The views from our rooms were spectacular. We each had a balcony and on the glorious day that it was, it was fantastic to relax and sit looking at the clear blue shimmering sea. What a wonderful place we live in! Now… having a ten year old boy doesn’t mean you can do this for long! No Mummy, action is needed. It’s time to play, get moving, no time to chill out. So, we all went back to the poolside and had a swim in the heated outdoor pool. It was really rather good. Grandma and Grandad relaxed some more, sunbathing on the loungers watching us. Dinner was booked for 8pm. The menu was excellent, the service was perfect and a great evening was had by all. A dinner well deserving of a 70th Birthday.
29 29 Being so near to where we live meant that Hayden could be taken to school, so the following day he went to an early breakfast which he thoroughly enjoyed and then Nellie took him off to get his education. We had booked a massage for Mum in the adjacent hotel which is part of the three Oceana Hotels on the sea front. The advantage of these hotels is that if you stay in one you can use the facilities of the other two as well. Each hotel has something different to offer. Again it was a beautiful day – not bad for the 22nd September! Dad likes his sunbathing, so again the loungers next to this pool were a welcome site as you can see here. Getting up was not so easy though! After Grandma’s very special Birthday massage we all took a walk along the sea front down to the beach. There is an impressive Tribute to Jon Egging from the Red Arrows, who tragically lost his life after a Bournemouth Airshow display. This is based on an idea by two pupils from Kinson Primary School and was designed by the artist Tim Ward. I had not seen it before. Then we followed the path to Harry Ramsden’s! What an international fame this

“Out for the count” and “Give us a hand!” has become. Mum remembered 55 years ago going into a ‘shack’ up North to get fish and chips from Harry’s place. That brought fond memories back for her. We just had to go in to taste the delights. Grandma loved the setting and she very nearly ran off with one of their plates! The waiter didn’t quite have to do a rugby tackle at the door, but it was a close shave…. Apparently they get asked often if the plates can be taken or purchased. A very clever idea! It all adds to the authenticity of the surroundings. The meal was delicious and ended a really happy 24 hours ‘away’. We are so very lucky to live in such a glorious location. Mum’s Birthday was a resounding success. Dad sent us a thank you card on their return to Yorkshire which said, “We were completely taken aback. Mum was overwhelmed by it and will remember her 70th for quite some time!” We didn’t quite manage to get her on the new zip wire…maybe we will save that for next time? Where will Nellie go next…? Private Rented Housing Demand Set to Increase

Demand for private rented housing is set to explode over the next five years – and Government will need to work closer than ever before with the professional lettings industry, if it is to meet the challenges of Jeremy Clarke a burgeoning population. It is also estimated that up to one million more renters will be looking for homes in the next five years – adding to a rental market that has already doubled in the past 20 years and is expected to double again over the next two decades. There is going to be immense pressure to provide much needed quality private rented housing alongside owner occupied homes. Government will need to be creative in its support of landlords and the private rented sector to accommodate the housing needs allied to this unprecedented growth,” says Jeremy Clarke of Belvoir. The shift towards renting has, in part, been fuelled by rising house prices and a lack of affordability, but other social factors including marriage break-ups, redundancy and job relocation have also contributed towards the trend. In England alone there are now over 4 million people renting privately. But with a continued squeeze on mortgage lending, it is predicted that more than half of all Britain’s homes could be rented by the year 2032. Jeremy, who owns the Belvoir Office in Christchurch, says: “Existing Government schemes such as the Build to Rent initiative, designed to stimulate new private rented housing supply and attract institutional investment, are to be applauded but in my view our industry, in general, doesn’t know a lot about it and there has been no wide scale engagement with lettings agents. “Such schemes present an opportunity for lettings agents to work with developers to provide much needed rental stock for the buy to let market which not only continues to grow at a very fast rate, but also looks set to carry on doing so well into the future.” However, Jeremy believes there is also an immediate danger to existing housing stock following statements made by Labour Party, which many industry experts consider both ill-conceived and unworkable. “Proposed changes such as the introduction of rental caps and statutory long term rental agreements could discourage new landlords from investing in new property and encourage existing buy to let investors to sell up due to increased costs. Alternatively they could be forced to pass those costs onto tenants. Far from being ‘protected’, tenants would be much worse off. Furthermore I believe that the proposals will only help rogue landlords and agents to introduce higher rents by the back door. “ Jeremy says: “The best way to maintain stimulus for a fair and healthy private rented sector is to establish a centralised regulator, since good regulation separates rogue agents from the herd; recognises the difference and forces them out of the market. The remaining good ones are encouraged to provide valuable quality housing solutions and services in which we all take great professional pride. Self-regulating lettings agencies, such as Belvoir, already provide high levels of service, expertise and professionalism and we believe we lead the way in this area and our record on transparency is second to none.” Belvoir, along with all other reputable agents, wants to see Government bring in regulation for the entire sector - but it is essential that we, along with other professional bodies, are given the opportunity to help shape the future of such regulation so that both tenants and landlords can be assured of a high quality and transparent service in the future. Grand Gesture at the Regent Community News
New Grand Piano donated to the Regent Centre in Christchurch Tinkling the Ivories at the Regent in Christchurch just took on a new air of grandeur as the Centre was presented with the gift of a brand new Grand Piano by one of its founding members, Janet Townend of Mudeford. Janet, together with her late husband, Kit Townend, were both instrumental in launching the Regent as the arts and entertainment Centre of Christchurch in 1983. The Grand Piano that Janet has just donated to the Regent is a state of the art Bluthner Irmler Europe Boudoir Grand. The German firm of Bluthner are recognised internationally as one of the finest producers of pianos in the world. This particular model has an elegant polished ebony finish and is due to make its debut on the Regent stage on Tuesday 21 October 7.30pm for Swinging at the Cotton Club, featuring The Harry Strutters Hot Rhythm Orchestra and the Jiving Lindy Hoppers with music from the Roaring 20s. The Piano has been supplied locally by The Piano Agency which is run by Martin and Gill Wilson and is also based in Christchurch. The Piano Agency sourced the Grand Piano in Germany and arranged for all the import and shipping of this magnificent instrument. The Bluthner replaces an electronic Yamaha grand piano which has done sterling service at the Regent for many years but concert demands at the Centre meant there was an increasing need to supply incoming artists with the real thing. However, the old Joanna will still be used in the Regent Centre Studio for rehearsals and for regular dance and drama classes. Regent Centre Manager, Greg Rawlings, said: “I can’t thank Janet enough on behalf of the Board, the staff and the volunteers at the Regent for her extremely generous gesture. I had only just mentioned to the Board that we would be needing a new Grand Piano for our prestige stage shows, when Janet just told me to go out
and get it! Janet has been a stalwart supporter of the Regent from Day 1 and we are all very grateful to her.” Janet, who has been a volunteer at the Regent since 1982, was part of the original team of local enthusiasts who cleaned, repaired and refurbished the Regent, following it closure as a cinema and Bingo hall, in readiness for its opening in 1983 as the arts and entertainment centre for Christchurch. Janet remains a member of the Regent Centre Board of Directors to this day. Music has always played a major part in Janet’s life and at school she was in the choir and played flute in the orchestra. Although she has never had formal piano lessons, Janet often visited a school friend who was having lessons and picked up a few tips from her. Janet said: “I am really looking forward to the new Grand Piano’s first performance on stage at the Regent. Swinging at the Cotton Club with the Harry Strutters Hot Rhythm Orchestra and the Jiving Lindy Hoppers on Tuesday 21st October 7.30pm promises to be an unforgettable evening!”

LEWIS Overdrafts Overdrafts are a debt like any other, if you don’t manage it, it will spiral out of control. While there are methods to cut the cost, they’re often far less talked about than the common techniques for cutting credit card bills – but are just as important. In a nutshell your aim should be to cut the cost and repay what you owe. Here’s my tips on how…
Organise incoming cash and move it into bill pots at the start of the month so you're not tempted to spend unnecessarily, it’s called piggybanking. Use this technique to make payments - eg, £100 a month - to your overdraft, treating it like any other bill. Use my free automated budget planner to help at www.budgetbrain.com.
Get paid £100 to take a free overdraft. There are two big players who offer decent deals for those with overdrafts who switch account. Though you’ll need to pass their credit score. Move to www.firstdirect.com, which is the no. 1 rated bank for customer service (92% of my web users rated it ‘great’) and you get an ongoing £250 overdraft. Crucially it also gives you £100 sign up bonus, which you should put straight towards your debt. To get it you’ll need to pay in your salary or income, which must be at least £1,000 a month. Alternatively for a potentially larger 0% overdraft there’s the www.nationwide.co.uk FlexDirect account. Yet it only gives you this overdraft for the first year, so ensure you use that time to clear the debt or afterwards it’s 50p a day.
Use savings (if you've any). Having overdrafts and savings isn't sensible. Think about it: a £1,000 overdraft at £20 a month equals £240 a year, but the same in easy access savings, after tax, earns a paltry £13 at best. So repay debt with savings and you're £229 per £1,000 up each year. Once the overdraft's paid off, you can save more freely. You may think: "But I'll have no savings if the boiler packs up or the roof falls in." True, but in an emergency, access the overdraft you’ve paid off again and you'll be no worse off. To beat the fear of being without savings, read www.mse.me/repaydebts.
Shift your overdraft to a 31 month 0% card. While you may have heard of credit card debt shifting deals called balance transfers, a few cards also offer a ‘money transfer’ where it simply pays cash into your bank account, so you can then pay off your overdraft, meaning you then owe it instead. This is a good option if you’ve a bigger overdraft and will need more than a year to repay it. My top pick card right now is www.mbna.co.uk, which lets accepted customers do it at 0% for 31 months for a one-off 4% fee (it’s just 2.88% for normal balance transfers). However, it’s credit score dependent, so use the www.mse.me/eligibility tool which will show you which money transfer cards you’ve the best chance of getting. If you are doing a money transfer do follow these golden rules: a) Don’t assume all cards do this, most charge a fortune. b) Always repay the monthly minimum or you'll lose the 0% deal. c) Plan to clear by the end of the 0% period or it jumps to the full rate - with MBNA that's 22.9% rep APR. d) If you’re unsure of what you’re doing use the step-by-step help in www.mse.me/moneytransfers. Manage your way back into credit. Cutting the cost of your overdraft isn’t the end game, you should aim to always be in credit (or at least always within your overdraft when there’s no cost). To help do ask companies you pay to shift direct debits to near the end of your working month. If paid on the 25th, aim for the 20th. This artificially boosts your balance so you're in the red less - but don't spend the cash. Moving bill dates cuts fees, but won't tackle the overdraft. So sit down and do a budget to find out where you can cut back.
Poor credit? Get 0% respite from bank charges. The options above won't help if your score's poor, but there is one card that offers 0% on spending until October even for those with a poor credit history. The www.luma.co.uk card accepts some with CCJs or defaults over a year old to get it. Now as this isn’t a debt shifting card, you have to play clever and be disciplined to take advantage of it for reducing overdrafts. The technique is you do your normal, budgeted, day-to-day spending on the card up to the credit limit, instead of from your bank account. This builds up the debt on the card, but allows your overdraft to be repaid by your income. Do ensure you can make monthly repayments to clear the card before the 0% ends though or the rate jumps to 34.9% representative APR. "I got £1,560 in unfair bank charges back." If you have an overdraft the nightmare scenario is exceeding your limits and getting stung with bank charges – these transaction fees can be £6 per day or up to £25 per transaction. Get it wrong and they can add up to £100s or £1,000s a year. Do everything you can to avoid them and communicate with the bank if there’s no solution. However, if you are or have been hit, do remember reports of the death of unfair bank charges reclaiming have been exaggerated. Admittedly now it's mainly for those where charges put you into financial hardship, yet some do get money back, Alice emailed me to say: "I sent your template... a day later the bank refunded £1,560. If the debts are all too much for you, it’s worth considering non-profit debt help from agencies like www.stepchange.org, www.citizensadvice.org.uk, and www.nationaldebtline.org. Grass Roots No 4 There is a widely-held misconception out there that a Garden = Flowers. This is not so and you only have to look at the garden in the winter when there are no flowers out, to see what I mean. A garden without structure is just a collection of plants and is meaningless whenever the flowers are not there. A beautiful garden = plants + design (ie structure). No 5 Sometimes good ideas or solutions to problems are right under our noses but we just can't see it for looking. This is because we are usually too closely involved in our own gardens to be objective. If possible, talk your ideas through with someone else. It is amazing what can be suddenly seen after looking at it for months or even years.
7 COMMON GARDEN DESIGN MISTAKES ‘Forewarned is forearmed’ so today I’d like to warn you against the 7 most common mistakes I’ve seen time and again that people make with their gardens and the real pity of it is that they were all avoidable. No 1 Not being clear about what you want is the No 1 mistake I’ve seen in 17 years of garden design. This step, whether you’re going for a full re-design of your garden or just changing one area, is the step most people leave out or gloss over. Which is incredible, if you think about it, because if the garden is not exactly how you want it to be, it does not matter how hard you work or how much money you throw at it, it will not be right. No 2 Not having a plan is the next big mistake I see over again. Even if the garden owner knows what they want to do, by not having a plan, they are almost certainly doubling the amount of work involved and very likely the cost too. No 3 There are some gardeners who seem to think that any plant will grow anywhere they choose to put it. WRONG! Plants need certain conditions in which to thrive and if they are not present, the plant dies but people don’t think about this because the death of the plant doesn’t happen instantly.
No 6 Going down to the garden centre and buying the first thing that catches your eye is the best way I can think of for a gardener to lose money. Always read the label before buying the plant to see if it will suit the growing conditions in your garden. If not, resist the temptation and do not buy it because it will not live. No 7 Maintenance should always be thought of as you go along. Before changing anything or buying a new plant, always ask yourself what the maintenance implications are before to take action. There is no point in having a garden that is a burden to you rather than a joy. As soon as you start using words like ‘should’ and ‘ought’ about the garden, its time for a major re-think!

If you’re a company car driver, the chances are you’re looking to shrink your tax bill and free up cash to meet other outgoings. If this is the case, fret not, because the new Mazda3 has arrived.
Behind the wheel, the Fastback petrol powered version offers precision handling, with 0-62mph arriving in 8.8 seconds. Disappointingly, it doesn’t feel as rapid as that and top speed is a measly 123mph.
You see, 2014/15 company car benefit-in-kind tax bills, lower than a host of rivals, are set to make the Mazda3 the sensible financial choice for fleet managers and drivers alike.
Of course, when you’re on the road, gobbling up thousands of miles a year, your own wellbeing is never far from your mind. Therefore, it’s reassuring to know the up-to-theminute Mazda3 is officially one of the safest cars on the road in the UK after receiving a top five star safety rating in the Euro NCAP tests.
Word must be getting around because Mazda posted sales of 8,576 cars in March. That’s a surge of 40 per cent over the same month last year, well ahead of the industry rise of 18 per cent. Much of that is down to the Mazda3, which was launched at the beginning of the year. Total sales of the motor in the first quarter of 2014 are now approaching 3,000. What’s more, data from vehicle valuation experts CAP Automotive, reveals that the Mazda3 beats numerous similar sized rivals in terms of average forecasted pound note depreciation. Trounced competition includes the Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Peugeot 308, Renault Megane, Toyota Auris, Vauxhall Astra and Volkswagen Golf. So let’s hold a magnifying glass over the spanking new model to see why it’s so popular. Due to its low-slung stance, the Mazda3 is curvaceously distinctive and creates a powerful visual link with its fresh Mazda6 and Mazda CX-5 siblings. With kerb weights starting at 1,347kg - that’s for the petrolpowered 2.0-litre 120 SKYACTIV-G Fastback that I drove – it’s one of the lightest members of its class. Much of this weight-saving is attributable to the increase in the proportion of high-tensile and ultra-high tensile steels in the Mazda3’s bodyshell. It’s been boosted from 50 to 60 per cent to create a strong and impact resistant structure.
The brand’s all-time bestseller achieved outstanding marks, scoring 93 per cent (for adult) and 86 per cent, (for child) occupant protection (both among the highest scores recorded in Europe this year), and 65 per cent and 81 per cent, respectively, for pedestrian protection and safety assist. The Mazda comes with many airbags as well as gadgetry known as Smart City Brake Support, which helps to reduce or prevent low-speed collisions by automatically applying the brakes if you fail to act. The motor also has Hill Hold Assist fitted to prevent roll back on inclines. Further standard equipment includes alloy wheels, airconditioning, power-folding heated mirrors, leather steering wheel, trip computer, radio/CD with six speaker audio system, seven-inch colour touch screen, USB/iPod connectivity and Bluetooth hands-free connectivity. All in all, the four-door, front wheel-drive saloon has exceptionally generous interior cabin space, and a sporty design to give standout appeal both on the road and in the company car park.
