Dear Christchurch, Well it has been all go in our house with Hayden settled into his new middle school. We are back to swimming lessons, brass band practice and homework!

All good fun and often a challenge, fitting everything in. Hayden is a pretty keen swimmer, swimming for the Swim Bournemouth Club which does mean some early mornings – starting at 5.45am on a Friday and 7am on a Saturday…. That is early for me! I do take my hat off to those parents who have really sacrificed a lot to help their children become great sports people.

It takes quite some dedication by the whole family.

I don’t think Hayden will make the Olympics, but it is a great sport and one Stephen and I are happy to support him in. It gets him away from the computer for a while, which can also be a challenge…

We have had a good month putting the magazine together for you. There are some new advertisers for you to see. Do take a look and see who may be able to help you, and of course tell them that you got their details from The Christchurch Directory.

This is our 86th edition and I still love to hear that the local trades and businesses are getting calls and bookings from us! There is also a lovely story by local writer Sue Montague on pages 40 and 41 as well as other interesting articles and several puzzles for you to do. Focus on Francis Poole, the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch hospitals provide respected and highly regarded NHS care to hundreds of thousands of patients in east Dorset every year.

In national assessments and reports, these hospitals consistently perform at a high level against a range of key standards and quality indicators. Comprehensive surveys of patient views also paint a positive picture of how hospital care is viewed by those who receive it.

Achieving these high standards requires a continued commitment to quality from the board of directors to the wards, and a sharp focus on providing truly patientcentred care.

The tragic consequences of losing sight of these basic objectives were highlighted earlier this year in a damning report which examined the causes of substandard care provided by Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust.

The Francis Report, published in February, marked the culmination of a year-long public inquiry into the systemic failings at that trust, and sent reverberations throughout the NHS and further afield.

At the heart of the report, its author, Robert Francis QC, called for a re-emphasis on ensuring the needs of patients come first.

So how did hospitals in east Dorset respond to this report?

At Poole, the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch hospitals, it provided an opportunity to re-evaluate the fundamentals of how quality care is delivered and whether genuine emphasis was placed on each and every patient and their individual needs. In short, were they getting the basics right?

The report’s 290 recommendations were reviewed in detail as a matter of urgency in order to provide assurance that the failures identified at Mid Staffs could not be repeated here.

Each hospital also held a series of listening events, providing an opportunity for more than 300 staff working in a wide range of roles to discuss the Francis Report with members of both trust’s management boards.

asked to give their views on the report and the care offered at their local hospitals.

Understanding individual patient experiences and where care exceeds or falls short of expectations is vital, says Martin Smits, Director of Nursing and Patient Services at Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. “It is all too easy in the wake of the terrible stories which emerged from Mid Staffs to forget the excellent work taking place in the NHS,” said Martin.

“Locally, we know from national surveys that our patients rate both our hospitals highly, which is a huge encouragement to us and spurs us on to deliver even better care and service.

“What I believe is essential is peering underneath these headlines, to look at the factors that make an individual patient’s experience in hospital good, and where it could have been improved.

“We can only do that by listening to patients and our staff.”

Paula Shobbrook, Director of Nursing at The Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, agrees. “No one knows more about what is happening at the forefront of patient care than those responsible for delivering it and those receiving it,” said Paula.

“These experiences and viewpoints - good and bad - are essential in order for us, as board members, to know how we are doing.

“Trust boards receive a vast amount of information on quality and performance. Coupling this with the views of staff, as we have done through our post-Francis Report listening events, and the experiences of our patients, provides invaluable insight.

“Our ‘putting patients first’ commitment is just that - it’s a highly visible declaration that our aim is to ensure that at all times our focus remains on our patients and nothing else.”

Martin cites Poole Hospital’s longstanding commitment to patients - the Poole Approach – as a key factor in ensuring standards at his hospital remain consistently high. “The Poole Approach may have been introduced more than a decade ago, but its central tenet has never been more true - ‘patient centred care with dignity and respect for all’,” he said.

Whichever way this commitment to the needs of patients is packaged, both Martin and Paula are in complete agreement on one issue - when it comes to high quality care, complacency is simply not an option.

A thief may pass your vehicle and see an opportunity to make some quick cash by selling the CDs you left on your front seat. You may not miss a few CDs, but the inconvenience of the damage caused to your vehicle by the thief gaining entry is far greater than the theft itself.

We generally take steps to ensure our homes and personal property are secure, but many of us are less vigilant when it comes to our vehicles.

There’s one way to guarantee that nothing gets stolen from your vehicle…

Remove Possessions From Your Vehicle When Unattended - Not Even In the Boot.

There are simple steps you can take to minimise your chances of becoming a victim of car crime. Here are some useful tips and advice to help you keep your vehicle and your belongings safe from thieves: • Lock the doors, windows, boot and sunroof each time you leave the vehicle, including at petrol stations.

• Double check the central locking has worked and your car is secure • Keep any driving documents and personal correspondence at home • Take removable stereos, sat nav equipment including the unit and cradle and wipe off any marks left behind on your windscreen.

• Where possible, park your vehicle in a busy, well lit area If you follow the above steps you are doing everything you can to protect yourself from becoming a victim of crime, lets work together to keep Dorset safe.

Community Speed Watch (CSW) Community Speed Watch gives local communities the opportunity to get actively involved in road safety.

Speed Watch can be set up in villages, towns or urban areas to discourage drivers and motorcyclists from speeding. Dorset Police Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) liaison officers can assist groups in setting up by providing practical advice and support.

Like other watch schemes, Community Speed Watch groups are set up and run by volunteers Community Speed Watch groups use hand held devices to record and monitor details of motorists seen speeding and can also note drivers using a mobile phone or not wearing seat belts. The police then send warning letters to these motorists.

Christchurch is now looking for volunteers to help start watch groups to get involved with the scheme.

1. Each Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) area will have a CSW Liaison Officer.

2. This officer can either pro-actively recruit members of the community to take part in CSW and / or they will receive requests from the public to initiate a CSW in a given area.

3. Details of the people taking part in CSW will then be passed to the Vetting Department for Police Assurance Checks to be carried out.

4. Once the checks have been satisfactorily completed, the Liaison Officer can provide training to the members of the public in the use of the speed checking equipment and give advice on where it can be used.

5. As and when the CSW Team carry out speed checks, they will record how many vehicles were checked and how many were observed exceeding the speed limit thresholds (25 mph in a 20 mph area and 36 mph in a 30 mph area and 47 mph in a 40 mph area).

6. This information will then be sent to the Volunteer Support Team (VST) at Dorchester Police Station.

7. A warning letter will be sent to the registered keeper on the first two occasions that their vehicle is seen exceeding the speed limit. If the vehicle is observed for a third time, an action will be sent to the local SNT for further attention.

Families enjoy Fit Christchurch Fun Day Nellie, the Dorset Publications black campervan, also took us to the Fit Christchurch Fun Day last month.

We had a great day and Allan Wood from Christchurch Council sent us this report: Hundreds of families came down to Christchurch Quay on Saturday for the annual Fit Christchurch Fun Day organised by Christchurch Council.

They were able to enjoy a whole host of activities including the giant assault course, kayaking on the river, Battlefield Live, a space hopper course, a bouncy castle and infl atable slide and many more.

They were also treated to thrilling demonstrations from the Dorset Taekwondo Tigers and Beat Company and were invited to take part in fitness demonstrations and a zumba class.

Many fitness organisations were there to encourage people to find a new way to get fit and lead a healthier lifestyle and NHS staff gave blood pressure, weight and BMI checks as well as healthy eating advice.

We’ve had great feedback from the exhibitors who enjoyed promoting their services and we hope people now take up the offers and start to take steps towards leading a healthier lifestyle.”

Talking about Wildlife...

Some Facts about Bats Revered and feared, but rarely understood, bats have left few cultures indifferent during their millions of years of existence on earth. With their unusual anatomy – they are the only true flying mammals – silent flight and mythical reputation, bats have inspired many a folk story across the globe.

In Britain, there are 17 species of breeding bats of which the pipistrelles, the brown long-eared bat, the noctule and Daubenton’s bat are the most common. All British bats restrict their diet to insects only, devouring up to 3000 insects a night, from midges and moths to mosquitoes and beetles. Their massive appetites are necessary to sustain energy for their nocturnal adventures. Although bats are far from blind, they do not rely on their eyes for hunting but locate their prey using a sophisticated system known as echolocation.

Bats often live in close quarters to humans, but can be hard to observe, since the sounds that they make are too high pitched for the human ear.

They don’t build nests but roost in a variety of habitats, from hollow trees and caves to houses and churches, even tunnels. They often use different locations at different times of year, depending on their roosting needs.

Female bats produce only one pup a year, around June. As winter approaches, bats get

ready to hibernate, and in the colder months, you may find yourself co-habiting with a bat that has chosen your loft for its winter retreat. Please remember all bats are legally protected and must not be disturbed.

Tastes so good...

ROAST SEA BASS WITH A LEMON & GARLIC CRUST

Perfect for a simple lunch or a dinner party with friends, this main course is an easy crowd pleaser, looks great on the plate and is a wonderful dish to serve with vegetables or salad alike.

Equipment: Small processor or mortar and pestle Ingredients :

Oven: Gas Mark 5, 190°c

4 skinned fillets sea bass, washed under running water 3 unwaxed lemons 4 cloves garlic Small bunch of washed fresh parsley 25g butter 30g wholemeal bread 50ml extra virgin olive oil Salt & pepper

Method: Brush undersides with olive oil and season fish all over with salt and pepper. Zest one of the lemons and squeeze juice. Wedge the other lemon for garnish. Whizz garlic with lemon juice and zest. Once no more large pieces can be seen, add the parsley, bread and butter to the processor.

Quite quickly you should produce a moist and very tasty breadcrumb mixture. Press this mixture firmly onto the upper side of the fillets.

Roast for approximately 20 minutes, or until the crust is brown.

Serve with whatever takes your fancy!

If you are lucky enough to have a pond, large or small, at this time of year check all the pond plants and remove all dead and dying growth.

If you have a pump to run a fountain or waterfall, now is the time to clean and service it and store it until Spring. Feed the fish before Winter hibernation.

Cover the pond with netting to stop leaves from falling into the water and sinking to the bottom. Too much rotting vegetation in the water will create methane gas to the detriment of fish and other wildlife as well as a disgusting, smelly layer of sludge in the bottom that you will have to deal with, sooner or later!

If we have a severe winter, be ready to cover the pond completely during really freezing weather, or at least try to ensure fish can get oxygen by keeping a small area ice-free by using a ball or floating bowl. If the pond is covered with a sheet of ice, pour boiling water into the bowl until it can be lifted out.

In early Autumn, if you have clumps of marginal and bog plants, they can be divided and cut back the leaves of waterside plants.

Having said all that, I've actually seen goldfish frozen in solid ice for weeks, only to start swimming around perfectly happily when they thawed out - so what do I know?!

YOUR voice is needed on our Patient Participation Group.

The Patient Participation Group (PPG) is a group of volunteer patients from the Highcliffe & Mudeford Practice. The primary aim is to provide a patient voice and support a patient led culture. The other key role for us is promotion of better healthcare and treatment and we work closely with the Practice to achieve this. YOUR voice is not directly represented, and this is of concern as the NHS must reflect the needs of both present and future generations. Patients are now being put at the heart of decision making about their healthcare and we urge YOU to be an active part of this by joining our group.

We meet once a month, on a Monday evening, for a couple of hours. Each member of the group uses their individual skills to support the work of the group, ranging from organising events to taking the minutes. We hope that you will consider putting yourself forward to join our group; we need patients who are happy to work in a team, have good listening skills and who are able to communicate in a balanced way. It’s Panto Time once again!

Oh no it isn’t... Oh yes it is!!

With just over 10 weeks to go, BH Live is already getting in the Panto spirit!

Glitter, glitz and glam were in abundance at The Terrace Bistro - Bournemouth Pavilion as guests flocked to celebrate the launch of Aladdin – The Pavilion Pantomime, sponsored by Aruba Restaurant and Bar. I was lucky enough to be able to catch up with Chris Jarvis and ask him a few questions...

Having been born in Romford, Essex, what was it that drew you to make Bournemouth your home?

It was actually pantomime... In 2002, we did Cinderella in Bournemouth with Ruth Madoc. I loved the people and the atmosphere. With family close by it was a seaside resort that we had also visited a lot.

With appearances at Butlins early in your career, had you always wanted to be in entertainment as a child?

Yes. I used to do impersonations a lot and try to make people laugh. I think it helped a little to not get bullied so much when other kids found it funny.

What was your “big break” to get into presenting?

I was doing a voice on the radio called “The Anorak” and got invited into the Broom Cupboard on CBBC. From there it led into other programmes.

No. There are two main routes into the entertainment business. One is drama school and the other is variety. I was lucky enough to do the latter through experience at holiday camps and other

You have performed in pantomime professionally every year since 1995, what do you enjoy the most?

The variety of it all. Being able to do pretty much anything and generally being able to entertain audiences of any age. Also the ability, particularly here to make it very relevant for local people.

Who would you most like to star in panto with?

I think that Kelsey Grammer from Frasier would make an excellent pantomime villain!

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Nellie, the Dorset Publications travelling campervan took us through wonderful English rolling countryside to North Dorset this month. The views on route really are magnificent. Hayden would love to be a pilot he tells us, so we thought we would drive to the airfield and take a look at the idyllic setting of Compton Abbas. There is in fact a caravan site right there. You need to be a member of a caravan club to stay, and although we didn’t stay this time, it is certainly one we will revisit and make the most of in the future! Compton Abbas is set in Thomas Hardy country whose work was very much influenced by his rural surroundings. The airfield itself is 800 feet above sea level with 27 miles of gorgeous views on a clear day.

On the way there we passed Horton’s Tower, which is a folly built in 1750. A folly is literally a building built by the rich for no purpose other than to look at and admire! This tower is 140 feet tall and was built by the Lord of Horton

‘Phesant Alley’ - we saw about 10 all told Manor who was an architect and also an MP for Dorset between 1745 and 1786. Nowadays I found out, the tower is used by Vodafone to hide mobile phone masts! At least the folly has finally been put to use. It is also a way to help preserve the old building. You can see Nellie here with the folly in the background.

Continuing on our journey to Compton Abbas we drove through tiny lanes, that Nellie’s thighs could only just manage. One lane Stephen nicknamed ‘Pheasant Alley’ due to amount of pheasants crossing the very narrow road! You really are ‘out in the sticks’ and I have to say I like that after a busy week working.

On arriving at the airfield I thought we wouldn’t see many planes taking off as the weather had been pretty mixed, but to our delight the sun started shining and we did indeed see about 10 planes take off and land.

It is really exciting! There are many different types of small planes and I

suggest you take a look at their website www.comptonabbasairfield.co.uk to get a full flavour of all the men and women ‘in their magnificent flying machines’… We have some photos for you here to give you an idea.

We had a great day out. Stephen is looking at treating Hayden to a flying lesson for his Birthday (shush…don’t tell Hayden!). To our surprise we learned you can be as young as 7 to fly your own plane… with a trained pilot of course! This will either make Hayden more determined to become a pilot, or maybe he will decide to take a different career after all. I wonder which?

There is a restaurant at the site which has a great reputation for home made food. You can go for breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea. Wine is also on the menu.

Group bookings can be taken and, with fantastic views of the countryside and the runway where the planes take off and land, it would be an ideal place for a special occasion! In fact on this trip we saw someone having a 50th birthday celebration.

The Red House Museum Where the Past Meets the Present It was a fine sunny day and I was sitting pondering my next article in the magnifi cent gardens of the Red House Museum. As I basked in the late summer warmth, looking across the tree shaded lawn to the Priory’s ancient tower, it came to me. I would write about the Red House. It was originally built as a workhouse in 1764 and is now a delightful museum with free entry.

It was not always so. Brought into existence as a result of a need to provide shelter and occupation for the very poor, it was built alongside a converted barn used to isolate those suffering from smallpox.

In the early days, the main occupation was spinning flax, knitting stockings and cultivation of crops for food.

From the start of the 19th century, the workhouse women and children were employed in the making of fine fusee chains for clocks and watches for which Christchurch became known.

The Red House today is much more than a few relics of the workhouse days. In an hour or two you can marvel at the Victorian ladies costumes and the toy collection; see a wealth of prehistoric flint tools and learn about the early history of the area through its archaeology. Frequent art exhibitions are held and, in between, fascinating touring exhibitions with a local focus are put on by Hampshire County Council. In addition there is a packed programme of events for all ages.

As a film maker, I found the Museum was a natural subject for a documentary.

told. It is a while since the resulting DVD was released and I thought I would catch up by chatting with Conservator and Collections Officer, Jacqui Ready, one of two job-share managers from Hampshire.

I wanted to understand how the Red House was managing now that council funding had been reduced. For historical reasons, the Museum is governed by three councils, Christchurch, Dorset and Hampshire, with the latter taking on the main responsibility for the collections. Permanent staff have been reduced and the Red House continues to depend on the excellent volunteers who are involved in all aspects of the Museum and gardens. The Friends of The Red House provide valuable fund raising activities and through this combination of support it is business as usual. Plans for next year include a special exhibition marking the centenary of the outbreak of World War One in 1914.

The latest interactive exhibition now on takes us back to Victorian times, giving a real insight into the workhouse and life for the better off. ‘Meet the Victorians’ is on until 26 October. Why not drop in for a cup of coffee and a cake?

Local Country Park bucks national trend Water voles are thriving at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest thanks to the dedication of a team of Countryside Management Rangers. Their success is particularly rewarding as it comes at a time when conservationists nationally are reporting a further 20% decline in an already threatened population.

The Park commenced an extensive water vole reintroduction programme in 2011, which was followed in 2012 by a further release. In all over 300 water voles found a new home in East Dorset and sightings throughout 2013 indicate that the reintroduction was a huge success with water voles now seen regularly along the extensive Crane and Moors river system.

“Moors Valley was the first country park in the south to take this initiative and we believe our hard work has really paid off for our water vole families,” said Matt Reeks, Senior Countryside Ranger.

“The project has also united the local landowners who we brought together and encouraged to provide suitable habitats and continue to monitor a wide surrounding area for mink activity to ensure our voles are not be eaten by this aggressive, non-native predator”.

Good habitat management is crucial to the success of a programme of this nature. The river system in the Park is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Natural England, which inspects SSSIs, has put it in its top-rating category. Its careful management is a testament to the work of the Ranger team that not only ensures the success of the Park’s wildlife but also plays host to over 800,000 visitors each year at

what is now the third most visited county park in England.

“We have had many sightings of water voles near their release area over the last two years, and recent indications show they are now populating the river system adjacent to Moors Valley,” said Matt. “We are interested in finding out how far they have moved along the river system. I’d ask anyone visiting Moors Valley or strolling by the Moors River to keep their eyes open – and listen out for the distinctive ‘plop’ of the vole when it enters the water – and report any sightings to the Visitor Centre. We log all confirmed sightings and they will help us to ensure the future of the water vole in East Dorset.

Regent Centre Appoints First Deputy Manager: Felicity Crabb The Regent Centre in Christchurch enters an exciting new phase in its development, as the Board of Directors have taken the decision to strengthen the staffing levels with the appointment of the Regent’s first ever Deputy Manager, Felicity Crabb of Christchurch, on 3 September.

Felicity will be supporting the Regent’s Manager, Eliot Walker, as the Centre looks set to get busier than ever as the Autumn season of shows and films begins. Felicity will have particular responsibility for Marketing, Customer Service, Volunteer Recruitment and the Box Office at the Regent.

Felicity is certainly no stranger at the Regent.

Having grown up in Christchurch she has been a regular attender at both films and shows over many years. Indeed, joining the Regent’s team has also been a real family affair for Felicity.

Her grandmother, Eunice, has been a Box Office volunteer since the Regent re-opened as an arts and entertainment centre in June 1983, whilst Felicity’s father, Paul, is Practice Manager at Filer Knapper, who have been the Regent’s accountants for many years.

Felicity has already hit the ground running at the Regent, meeting the 150 strong volunteer workforce and planning an exciting series of future projects and funding campaigns for the Centre.

Felicity comes to the Regent equipped with the experience and skills to help move the Centre to a new level of excellence. She was Youth Arts Development Manager with Hampshire Museums and Galleries Trust from 2010. Here Felicity was part of a three year Big Lottery project to engage 14 – 24 year olds in Hampshire libraries, museums, galleries, discovery and art centres. Her experience will form the basis of attracting more young

people to join existing audiences at the Regent for films, shows and concerts.

Both the Manager, Eliot Walker and the Chairman of the Board, John Teather, are delighted to welcome Felicity to the Regent.

John Teather said “At a recent appointments panel, we were able to offer the position to Felicity Crabb, a local girl with her interests deeply rooted in Christchurch and The Regent Centre. The new role of Deputy Manager will provide support to the Manager by taking special responsibility for the “outward facing” activities of the marketing, Box Offi ce and administrate systems, in particular supporting the volunteers and to ensure the success of everything that goes into making the visitor experience of the highest standard”.

Perhaps a better alternative to hamsters, Gerbils make good little pets for slightly older children and because they’re not nocturnal you won’t be bothered so much by noises in the night. They do, however nibble constantly and like to shred things for bedding. Their inquisitive and active personalities mean that they’re not as ideal for much younger owners as they very much enjoy human company but need a bit of control, especially as they like to tunnel!

Note that tunnel systems designed for hamsters won’t suit gerbils as they like to create them themselves. They are super pets as they rarely bite unless they are stressed or provoked and enjoy being played with.

Gerbils are typically between 6 and 12 inches long including their tails which actually make up almost half of their total length. Indeed they also produce very little odour which also renders them great for a household pet.

ŠKODA Rapid 1.6 TDI Elegance

THIS MOTOR is more budget than bling; but that in itself is no problem.

The new hatchback from ŠKODA has space for five-up and, in 1.6 TDI guise, can extract up to 64.2mpg out of a tank. Also, with emissions of just 114g/km, the car is cost-effective to run as a company vehicle.

When it comes to thrills and spills the ŠKODA Rapid isn’t really quite as speedy as its name suggests. The oil-burner under the bonnet of the Czech-made motor powers it from rest to 62mph in 10.6 seconds and upwards to 118mph. It’s fairly slow going, and with only five gears it’s annoyingly easy to crunch the gearstick up into a non-existent sixth cog.

As well as the less than prompt performance the Rapid feels skittish at motorway speeds and the steering is too light to inspire confidence. I read an article recently that if my wife and I hold our property as tenants in common the nursing home cannot sell our home and use all the proceeds for care home fees should the need arise. Is this correct?

Unfortunately there is a lot of misinformation out there in relation to care home fees and properties.

Essentially, there are two ways to own Mia Prashad

your property – joint tenants or tenants in common. Owning as MRLQW WHQDQWV PHDQV WKDW RQ ÀUVW death the survivor will inherit the house absolutely – regardless of what you have said in your will.

If the survivor then goes into care then yes the whole value of the house will be taken into consideration when calculating care home fee contributions.

If you own as tenants in common it means that each of you own D VSHFLÀF VKDUH LQ WKH KRXVH (this can be in equal or unequal shares). Each one of you can then gift your half share of the house to whoever you want in your respective wills. Many people include a trust in their

wills allowing the survivor to live in the property until they die or move into permanent residential care at which point the trust comes to and end and the half share of the house then belongs to the children (or whoever you wish).

This way the half share of the deceased spouse is not included in any assessment by the care home as it does not belong to the survivor. However you need to have a will which has a provision for such a trust for the WUXVW WR NLFN LQ RQ ÀUVW GHDWK These trust provisions will not apply whilst you are both alive.

Taking the Call

She couldn’t look at the phone, sure it wouldn’t ring if she did. The woman in the office had said that there was a possibility there wouldn’t be a call but that, if there was, it would be this afternoon. Five o’clock already. A half-eaten sandwich lay on the coffee-table tray by the side of her chair. She had decided against a flask of coffee or tea, both of which might occasion too many visits to the bathroom, choosing a jug of water and a glass instead. Now she really wanted a cup of tea. With her foot still painful and swollen, would she get back to the sitting-room in time if the call came? Why hadn’t she bought one of those phones to walk about with? It would have been better to buy one of those than the six tins of paint now under her kitchen table, acquired in a bout of do-it-yourself enthusiasm. What had she been thinking of, unable even to change a light bulb without falling and hurting herself.

The neighbour who’d taken her to casualty had been very kind, stressing that she was to ask him if any more light bulbs needed changing and that it was lucky just to have broken a bone in her foot and not, at her age, her whole leg. Smiling to herself, she mused that a newly-married young man in his twenties probably would consider someone over sixty (though only just) rather aged.

With his blue eyes and ready grin, he reminded her of her father.

Her adopted father. She had adored her parents. The warmth of their love and care remained. It hadn’t been a surprise to learn she was an adopted child. With her sleek dark hair and deep brown eyes, her mirror showed no resemblance to either of her parents. After her twenty-first birthday, the three of them had sat together in the garden. She’d learnt that her army captain father and her mother had been posted to a garrison near Beirut, Lebanon, attending a nearby church with an attached convent. One day, they had been approached by the Mother Superior and taken to see a baby girl a few days old. The mother had come to them in the last stages of pregnancy, given birth to twins and then died, despite huge efforts to save her. The other child had, apparently, been dangerously ill and not expected to survive. Unable to have children themselves, they had eagerly agreed to take her, with a brief document giving her date of birth and the name her mother had given the nuns. ‘Convent of the Holy Cross’ was stamped at the top.

41 Over the three years since her parents had died, curiosity concerning her beginnings gradually grew. She had written to the Central Registry and Information Office for the Armed Forces in Beirut, sending them a copy of her only document. The answer now rested on the arm of her chair. A little shiver of excitement ran down her back as she gazed at it.

Her twin had survived. Following the Convent’s closure some twenty years before, papers as lacking in detail as her own had been transferred to the Registry. Her twin had been adopted and taken to Australia. Contact had been made by the International Red Cross. The letter from them stated that her twin had been given her name, address and telephone number, and was arranging to make contact - today.

She wondered, again, if her sister looked exactly like her. Would she be friendly? Had she got a family of her own - how wonderful to be part of bustling family life again.

The phone rang; she jumped, her hand shook as she reached to pick up the receiver.

‘Hello.’

‘Hello, there.’

A man’s voice; her excitement evaporated, must be an official of some sort; her sister wasn’t going to call.

‘Hello. Dora...I’m Denis. I think I’m your twin brother. I hope I am - it’s pretty certain - talking to you all the way from Melbourne here. The wife and I want to come to England - meet up you know. Can we?’

‘Y...yes!’

‘Good. I need a break from my building business. Sons can take over.

Can we stay a while with you?’

Dora smiled contentedly.

‘Oh, yes. Stay as long as you like.’

A builder, she mused. Maybe he would be handy with a paint-brush.

THE GLOBE Lost in a lost civilisation

I can barely see before me as the walls appear to snake in and out. I gingerly take each step carefully, unsure of the direction I am walking. All I can hear are footsteps and the sound of our voices as they echo from the high canyon walls. I feel as though I’m stuck in a computer game, looking for the exit but with no vision to see. ‘Are we going the right way?’ I ask but no one seems to know.

There are no stars and the night sky barely lights the way. Just hours before, this ancient city of Petra in Jordan was bustling with hoards of tourists and sellers.

Now, it is empty except for five Americans and one English girl.

I have just taken the last donkey ride and the place is deserted.

When I entered the ‘Red-Rose City’ five hours ago, little did I know that I would be one of the last people to leave this historical site.

make sure that you actually leave enough time to get out before darkness sets on this vast historical city or you may find yourself as we did - lost within a lost civilization…

Entry to Petra isn’t cheap and will cost 50 Jordanian Dinar for a day pass or 55 JD for two days but the proceeds go to the Queen Eilah humanitarian fund and the local Bedouins. If you have the time, explore Little Petra - the more unknown part of the site where you can avoid the crowds.

Petra attracts hoards of visitors each year and is the main attraction in Jordan. Known as the ‘Red Rose’ city, this sandstone carved site is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Last year marked the 2000th year of rediscovery of this ancient city that once belonged to the Nabataean civilization.

It is a place of timeless beauty with a kaleidoscope of colours and royal tombs. The Treasury itself is enough to leave you breathless before climbing the 800 steps to the Monastery that stands 50 metres tall. Night tours are held by candlelight on Mondays and Thursdays but being there at dusk is just as magical in this heritage site, half as old as time.
