Hello Christchurch, Mudeford, Burton and Friars Cliff, Autumn is now truly here, the nights are drawing in and the air is somewhat cooler. Stephen, Hayden and I did in fact get our last dip in the sea just a couple of weeks ago. We have a rubber dinghy, not quite like the yachts we see bobbing in the water, but fun nevertheless. Wet suits are a good idea too! I looked very glamorous in mine… Can I hear you laughing? This month in The Christchurch Directory we have our very important trades and business people to call. I generally think things are looking up — I deliberately don’t listen to the news — so make sure the house and garden are ready for the colder season. Is the boiler working fine? Are the electrics all good? Does the garden need a tidy, does the chimney need sweeping or do you need new fitted wardrobes to cope with all those winter clothes? All the help you will find inside. Please do keep our local businesses busy! If you have a local club you would like us all to know about or have an interesting story to tell, then please let me know. I would love to hear from you. SPARKLE APPEAL GETS FAB SUPPORT Local charity The Sparkle Appeal, which raises mon ey for Poole’s Victoria Education Centre (VEC) for young, disabled people, is set to benefit from a Bournemouth boutique’s unique ‘Dress to Donate’ initiative. Fab Frocks of Westbourne, which has one of the largest selection of evening and cocktail dresses on the south coast, will be donating to the charity 10% of every full price dress sold to anyone attending the forthcoming ‘Touch of Sparkle’ Ball on Friday 26 October at the Italian Villa at Compton Acres in Poole. Fab Frocks will also be supporting the event with in-store promotions, an extremely sparkly Sparkle Ball window display plus a web and E-shot campaign. Tracie Beardsley, director of Fab Frocks said: “ We only launched the Dress to Donate initiative in September and we have already supported the children’s charity Julia’s House through our Dress to Donate scheme. We are delighted to now be supporting the Sparkle Appeal with their first ever ball.” Diana Newbury, Capital Appeals Manager for The Sparkle Appeal said: “All the children at VEC have to receive regular therapy and in order to truly realise their potential we urgently need to upgrade and renovate the physical facilities for their therapy. The Sparkle Appeal recently completed the fundraising for Phase 1 of our project, to raise £2.8m to build a new hydrotherapy pool. “Phase 2 will be officially launched at ‘A Touch of Sparkle’ Ball. A new state of the art Therapy Centre (at a cost of £1.2m) will bring together, under one roof,

It’s Fungi Time! Fungi are not classified as either plants or animals, but form a kingdom of their own comprising a broad range of organisms, such as brackets, stinkhorns and puffballs, in addition to the more familiar mushrooms and toadstools. Apart from being a delicious and nutritious addition to our diets, fungi are of great ecological importance, supporting many plants and wildlife. They come in a hugely diverse group of shapes, forms and colours, and many have illustrative names; take for instance the parasol, horn of plenty, amethyst deceiver or destroying angel; extremely poisonous as the name implies! What we normally call ‘the fungus’, or mushrooms, are actually the fruiting body of the microscopic organisms, the finely threaded mycelia, that live in the soil. Fungi have been around for millions of years and exist ever ywhere on the planet. In the UK, thousands of different species have been recorded, many of them edible. Autumn is a good time to enjoy a fungus foray in the woods to reap the benefits of this wonderful natural resource. Some of the most common ones such as the chanterelles, wax caps and boletes are delicious, as is the wellknown penny bun, found in coniferous and deciduous woods, but as many fungi are notoriously difficult to identify and can cause ill

Transition Town Christchurch Making the transition from a fossil-fuel based economy to one that is more sustainable, with less harm to the planet The Transition Town movement was born in Kinsale, Ireland in 2005 where its founder Rob Hopkins was overseeing a student project on sustainable living. He moved to Totnes in Devon and over the next year the concept was developed. The Transition Movement is a grassroots network of communities that are working to build resilience in response to peak oil, climate change, and economic instability. ‘Resilience’ applies in many ways but basically we mean the ability to adapt to changing circumstances and to plan ahead. The model is equally applicable to any community and works as well in Brixton as in Stornoway! The start point in any community is that a number of people acknowledge the danger to the planet off the end of cheap oil, the mounting effects of humans on the planet and the potential effects of economic instability. They then apply the principles of Transition to their own locality, identifying ways to mitigate against the hazards that may lie ahead. In Christchurch we are promoting local

food, which reduces the ‘food miles’ that use fuel to transport goods and can often put small local growers out of business. We discuss with Supermarkets how they can improve matters by buying locally and we encourage ‘grow your own’ both in gardens and Allotments, which are under threat. We believe that most people can reduce their energy costs for transport, heat and light and that this would bring a major reduction of our consumption of fossil fuels. Our September Event showed this dramatically as our speaker described his own journey towards energy self-sufficiency. Our latest initiative is to encourage community cohesion in a growing number of ways. We are introducing Fitness opportunities for older people, Give and Take days, Make do and mend workshops, Art projects, a Craft group and a Growers group. We aim to bring people together and also to interest them in new skills and opportunities, particularly in the town centre. A strong sense of community will help in tackling future problems.

‘Twas the Night before Christmas... I was thrilled last week when I had the most exciting call… I answered the phone and a very friendly voice asked “Is that Debbie?” I politely said “Yes” and to my astonishment the reply was “Oh good, this is Father Christmas…from Highcliffe!” I knew the caller was not joking and could only imagine how I would have felt when I was 5…or had the feeling changed at all? I love Christmas and the whole magic and spirit of this time. It is just the best. I visited ‘Father Christmas’ a few days later at his home. Mr Vic House, alias Father Christmas, has been greeting children at Christmas time for the last 43 years. Children have been known on many occasions to say to their Mum’s and Dad’s “Oh…this is the REAL Father Christmas!” Vic actually made his own suit. It is gorgeous with bells and decoration that absolutely depict th e d elight and enchantment of Christmas. He really does look the part! I hope you enjoy the photos we have here. Santa Claus originally evolved from a kind man, Nicholas of Patara, born in what is now Turkey around the time 270AD. So it is told, his wealthy parents died when he was but a boy, but he used his inheritance to help the sick and needed. He went on to be named Bishop of Myra and quickly became known for his love of children and generous nature. Canonized as a saint less than a century after his death, Saint Nicholas’s generosity led to his reputation as a gift giver. Vic started his “career” as Father Christmas at the tender age of 15 at Sunday School in Leicestershire. Later he

Vic in his hand-made full costume was to become a member of the Leicester Repertory Company at the Theatre Royal, where his love of theatrics bloomed. After completing his national service in the RAF, he continued his theatrical career in the Melody Inn Revue New Brighton and also appeared in panto at the Liverpool Empire. He was to later reenlist back into the RAF, where he joined the Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA) in Germany. One of his first roles after being de-mobbed from the RAF was at Butlins as Entertainments Manager. Vic then moved to Highcliffe and was a founder member of the Highcliffe Charity Players where he wrote and directed their first panto, Robinson Crusoe. His local Father Christmas appearance began at Christchurch Hospital on Christmas Day and also with the nurses

Christmas Carnival & Festive Gift Fayre Sat 8th December 2012 This year our Highcliffe Charity Christmas Carnival and Gift Fayre is on Saturday 8 December. Our chosen charity this year is Girlguiding Highcliffe and Mudeford District. They need new equipment and we are hoping to raise substantial funds for them through bucket collections throughout the day and evening. The gift fayre starts at 11am and can be found in Hoburne courtyard, in the centre of Highcliffe village, and will be well signposted. We have lots of interesting stalls lined up and it will be an ideal place to buy those Christmas presents! There will be food and drink available and we also have live music coming into the village to entertain us during the day, including the Swing Unlimited Community Band, the Songbirds and the Rock Choir, so we’re hoping that everyone will make a day of it! The procession starts at 6pm and the theme this year is The Best of British. The procession travels along the High Street, turns at Waterford Road and Stuart Road and travels back along the High Street so that everyone can have a second look at the colourful floats and walking entries, and of course Father Christmas, who is travelling on his very special Sleigh this year. T h e ma in r o a d th r o u gh High cli ff e, Lymington Road, will be closed to traffic from 5pm until approximately 8pm – so get there early to get the best car parking and vantage points.

during their annual carol concerts around the wards. The nurses used to reverse their capes to show the red linings. Vic was also instrumental in forming the Highcliffe Musical Society, acting as chairman and director. The Society was to stage large musical productions both locally and at the Playhouse Theatre in Bournemouth. Serving as a member of the Highcliffe Carnival Committee, which was first established to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Highcliffe, he was lucky enough to work with Diane Moran (The “Green Goddess”), who switched the lights on. This later became the Highcliffe Illuminations Committee . After a few years lapse, the carnival was re-instated and Vic got to have Anne Charleston (Madge from Neighbours) as his guest in the sleigh one year. Fred Dinage of Meridian TV compared the carnival and light switch-on. Through the years, Vic has helped raise thousands of pounds for charities, including Julia’s House and has had many modes of transportation, from a rocket to a “coach and pair”. What will it be this year… wait and see! And don’t forget… leave a carrot out for Rudolph and a mince pie for me! Says Father Christmas…
