Talbot Village Trust helps Coda Music Trust to renovate its music centre Talbot Village Trust has donated £6,000 to Coda Music Trust to enable the charity to address the sound proofing issues and health and safety concerns of the older parts of the music centre.
Coda Music Trust is a charity that has a mission to provide high-quality music programmes including music therapy and workshops for all ages and abilities within the community. The charity has carried out a number of renovations to the centre such as replacing the old wooden windows with new double-glazed ones. The replacement of the windows and the fitting of modern flooring has created better soundproofing in the two workshop rooms at the centre. The improvements were necessary as it has helped to contain the sound in the workshop rooms and reduce the noise impact on the centre’s residential neighbours. By the end of 2019, the charity is planning to improve the accessibility of the centre. The worn-down external doors will be replaced to provide better access and soundproofing to the workshop rooms and the main reception area. Phil Hallett, Chief Executive at Coda Music Trust, said: “We are hugely grateful to Talbot Village Trust for their support. Their wonderful donation has enabled us to tackle some serious problems with our buildings and make significant improvements, helping to create facilities we are proud of, and ensuring our work can continue to reach everyone in our local community.
“We have even noticed a rise in morale at the centre due to our new enhanced and quieter environment. The new tranquil space could introduce more opportunities for us, as we have already expanded our services as a result of the building’s improvements.” Russell Lucas-Rowe, Trustee of Talbot Village Trust, commented: “We are incredibly pleased to have been able to help the Coda Music Centre to keep reaching the most vulnerable members of the community such as the disabled, the elderly, the ill and everyone in need, all through the power of music. We have learnt how the centre transforms lives with music and now in an improved centre, the charity will be able to continue to support more people across the county.” Talbot Village Trust meets biannually and is accepting applications for funding from both previous and new applicants in the area before the Trustees meet in spring 2020. The Deceptive Cuttlefish The closest most people come to a cuttlefish is when their white ‘bones’ wash up on beaches after rough weather. These are the evolutionary remains of the animal’s shell, as cuttlefish are molluscs, relatives of the snails in your garden. Way back in the evolutionary past, their protective shell was internalised and then evolved into the cuttlefish bone, which is used to provide the animal with buoyancy in the sea. By regulating how much gas the bone contains they can move up or down in the water without having to expend energy on swimming. If you pick one up it feels light. Cuttlefish bones are not the only thing that makes this animal extraordinary. They are recognised as intelligent animals, indeed, research has shown that they can be more intelligent than cats and dogs. Capable of counting at an equivalent level as a 4 year old child, they can also solve puzzles, negotiate mazes and plan ahead. to get what they want – something that only a handful of species, including ourselves, are known to do. Cuttlefish communicate using the colours and patterns on their skin, which they can change instantaneously. This is especially used in courtship, when males compete for a female. Male cuttlefish have been filmed displaying female patterning on one side of their body (where a competing male can see it) whilst at the same time displaying to the female on their other side that he is an interested male. By deceiving the male cuttlefish into believing it is a female and therefore no threat, it avoids a physical battle, whilst at the same time giving the female his ‘come hither’ signals. While divers regularly encounter and interact with cuttlefish in our coastal waters, most people do not have the opportunity to meet these most interesting of animals. However at the Fine Foundation Wild Seas Centre in Kimmeridge Bay, Dorset Wildlife Trust had a baby cuttlefish in its aquarium. It is one that washed ashore as an egg and subsequently hatched in the aquarium where it grew rapidly ready for release last month. The Dorset Directories Camper Van Daichi The Dashing Dude, our muchloved campervan, has been missed. Certainly, one lady was quite upset that he had not taken us anywhere in the summer as we were too busy sailing the ocean waves around Alaska. Daichi himself had felt quite jilted and although he seemed ‘happy’ we had enjoyed ourselves, there was that little ‘frost’ in the air when he acknowledged ‘how pleased he was for us’. These Japanese vans do have a way about them… Well, he was now determined to make it up and he took us somewhere we had never been before – The Dorset Show. Yes! The Dorset Show. Can you believe it, we have never been? How ridiculous is that? I am sure that Daichi thought he could compete with all those immaculately dressed stallions. He rather fancied himself being groomed and brushed down. Or maybe it was all those jodhpurs and long leather boots, but that is going a little far as it is a family magazine after all. Daichi, really. The day was filled with blue

Amazing final jump of the six-bar event skies and some of our wonderful fluffy white clouds. My Mum and Dad came with us as Mum was celebrating her 75th Birthday and my Dad of 84 drove all the way from Hull for the special weekend. What better way than for Daichi to take us all out? One thing to mention here is that when Daichi was kitted out with all his new (designer of course) interior, we made sure there were three seats in the back, not two. We find this useful as the three of us can go out, with another couple. It also means at night when camping, the bed is wider when it rolls out, though the cupboards are a little narrower, so we had the fridge fitted under the back seat to give us more space for the cupboards. Clever! Off we all set. Daichi grinning from wheel to wheel. It was busy! The car park was full. On arriving in the showground there were thousands of people walking around the stalls, eating and drinking at the many food places and looking for bargains in the market area. We love the

29 atmosphere at these events. There is something quite special about our English country shows and this was no exception. We were lucky enough to have tickets for the member’s lawn, so we found perfect seats right next to the fence to watch the horses and their riders give us a show of their lives. They all looked so handsome and fine. The winning jump of the six-bar event was a spectacular 5 foot 10 high! We have a photo of the last leap. It was so exciting. “The Osborne Refrigerators Double Harness Scurry Class” was such fun. Nearly as nifty as Daichi on those country roads, the horse speeded between cones, in and out, left and right, to be the fastest to the finish line with no faults. That must be really exhilarating to take part in. Daichi is looking into it… oh oh… The elegance of the “Coaching Marathon Class” in comparison showed Daichi the sedate life of the rich in the past. It evoked images of young ladies whiling away their hours in their long lacey gowns, waiting for their Prince to sweep them off their feet. Daichi is getting all romantic now. Beautiful, graceful, stylish and wonderful to watch. The judges really have to

Now Daichi... don’t go getting ideas! know what they are looking for to pick a winner from such a polished class. Quite different and very much in contrast was the “Adrenaline Tour Motorbike Stunt Show”. How skilled are these riders in flying their bikes high in the air, screaming off on two wheels, flipping their machines at right angles. Wow. I really am hoping that Daichi does not get any ideas on this, or we may feel like we are all at sea again! What a fantastic day. Of course, a ‘little’ shopping had to be done and Dad bought me my Birthday present (shush don’t remind him it is not til December…). A lovely handcrafted bird bath. I also bought a leather door stop which I am rather fond of. Mum and Dad loved the whole day too. Daichi was as proud as punch that we enjoyed ourselves so much. On the way home I did see him looking admiringly at himself, at the reflection in a shop window. I am sure he saw the muscles of a Mustang or was it the strength of a Steed? Daichi was in his element. So were we. Where will he take us next I wonder! By Debbie Corney

Downton Abbey’s First Run at Regent helps raise funds for Dorset Blind Association of which Julien Fellowes, who penned the script for the film, is their patron The Regent in Christchurch recently celebrated its first First Run film screening in over 46 years since the original Regent cinema closed in 1973. Downton Abbey was shown at the Regent from its opening day on Friday 13 September for no less than 52 screenings before finishing on Thursday 10 October. At the end of the run, nearly 12,000 film fans had been to see Downton Abbey at the Regent, Universal Studios, which released the film, were delighted to inform the Regent Management, after they had collated the first day’s national box office receipts, that the Regent was the No 1 Independent cinema in the UK and Ireland for achieving the highest gross figures. When it came to sending in their weekly report to Universal’s head office in America after the first week of Downton’s release, the Regent was mentioned in despatches to the studio bosses in Hollywood. During the run of Downton Abbey at the Regent, a special bucket collection was held after every screening on behalf of the Dorset Blind Association of which Julien Fellowes, the scriptwriter for Downton’s TV series and the film, is one of their patrons. The Regent is really pleased to announce that the bucket collections have raised £2561 for the Dorset Blind Association during the run of Downton Abbey. Julian Fellowes very kindly recorded a personal “good luck” video message for the Regent, which was played before every screening of Downton Abbey. The Regent have previously worked with the charity to host the Dorset premiere of ‘Victoria and Abdul’ as the Director, Stephen Frears, is another of their patrons! The Head of Fundraising at Dorset Blind Association, Gareth Owens, sent this message of thanks to the Regent: “Even though I can now pretty much repeat
every line in Downton Abbey verbatim, I’m somewhat deflated now Dorset Blind Association’s bucket collection residency at The Regent Centre has come to an end. Not only did we manage to raise £2561 from their benevolent patrons, but it’s been a great experience for me and for our fundraising volunteer, and the staff and army of volunteers at the venue have been nothing short of AMAZINGLY SUPPORTIVE to us - I can’t thank them enough. Thank you kindly, Felicity Porter and Laura Dean and your merry bunch of theatrically inclined cohorts for your support.” The Dorset Blind Association supports people living in Dorset with site loss or partial site loss to live full and active lives and we are really proud to be able to support the work they do. On Your Plot Feeling Fruity
Few flavours compare with that of fruit freshly picked from the garden. Much of the fruit available in the shops (particularly the supermarkets) has been grown for it’s ability to travel well rather than it’s flavour and may have been picked well before it’s arrival on the shelf. If you fancy apples from your own tree, or a bowl of raspberries fresh from the garden, now is the time to act.
Jobs for November :-
• Start to harvest parsnips after the first frosts. • Tidy up your greenhouse or polytunnel, wash out pots and seed trays before storing ready for the Spring • Sow hardy peas or broad beans ready for an early crop next year. • Use netting or chicken wire to protect your broccoli and cabbages from hungry pigeons. • If you haven’t already done so, plant garlic and shallots. • If your rhubarb is taking over, lift and divide the crowns before replanting.
If you are anything like me you will spend ages drooling over pictures of bushes dripping with blackcurrants or gooseberries, trees laden with apples, or bowls full of luscious raspberries but struggle to get to grips with the realities of production on your own plot! Patience is a virtue that is definitely required for growing your own, and this is particularly so with fruit trees and bushes. I have to confess to having an inclination to move on with anything that requires more than a few months to give a decent crop, but with most fruit you just have to force yourself to take the long term view and now being the proud owner of a 2 year old gooseberry bush and raspberry canes I can assure you that the waiting is worthwhile! Think carefully about where you will grow your fruit. Trees require lots of space (but are a wonderfully attractive addition to your plot) while bushes may be incorporated in your borders, but will probably need some protection if you aren’t going to loose a lot of fruit to the birds.
Late autumn is an ideal time to add fruit to your plot as trees and bushes will be entering their dormant period. It is important to buy healthy plants and to ensure that they are dormant as they will transplant more successfully. If you are ordering from a reputable mail order nursery they are likely to arrange delivery to coincide with the best time for planting. You should also get instruction on how to plant and care for your new tree or bush. Trees such as apple or plum may be grafted onto a variety of different rootstocks - this sounds complicated but all you really need to know is what effect this will have on the final size of the tree. If you have limited space it is possible to buy dwarf varieties some of which can even be suitable for container growing. Pollination is also an important consideration, some varieties are self-fertile and do not need a pollinator, while others may require another variety planted close by to act as a pollinator. When planting your tree out it may benefit from staking and protection around the base. One ‘fruit’ that is a little different and very easy to grow is Rhubarb. Rhubarb is actually classified as a vegetable, but certainly tastes good used like a fruit in crumbles and pies. November is the perfect time to plant out dormant crowns. Although these can be bought from nurseries Rhubarb tends to spread well when established and needs to be divided every few years so it is often possible to obtain surplus crowns from friends or neighbours. Plant your crown with the buds just above the soil and water well the first year. Once the plants have become established you can look forward to harvesting a good crop of delicious pink stems from Spring onwards very welcome as the first ‘fruit’ of the year.

Going Green... Looking after our planet is essential. It has become more and more apparent that we need to care for our environment. With that in mind I took an honest look at how much plastic I use on a daily basis. What could I replace by an eco-friendly alternative? I have been amazed by what I saw. Toothpaste. Traditional toothpaste is not only stored in environmentally damaging plastic, but it contains chemicals which could be damaging to our own health too. The toothpaste opposite is natural and contained in glass, which can be reused. I chose to try the tea tree version. Known for its powerful healing properties, throughout history, Tea Tree leaves have been used to heal cuts, treat burns, and as a topical application for infections. This toothpaste is a paste-like clay, so it takes a little adjusting, but I have to say I have found it really good and much less harsh on my aging gums. The other alternative is the peppermint toothpaste tablets. With a more traditional flavour these would be ideal for when we are travelling. As they are not liquid, they will not take up any hand luggage space, in those little plastic bags either! Double bonus. Of course, I needed a plastic free
toothbrush to go with it, so the sustainable beechwood version opposite is perfect! There is a children’s one, soft bristles or medium. Suitable for all the family. Stephen, my husband has tried the shave bar recently and proudly showed me his silky-smooth skin after shaving the other day! He really likes this product, so we highly recommend it. Again, it is natural for the skin, no chemicals and it is in a plastic free container. A natural handmade shaving soap, for a traditional wet shave, so wave goodbye to harsh gels and foams, and say hello to a gently soothing and creamy lather. A winner to us. Stephen hasn’t tried the classic shave with the Bambaw’s stylish double edge safety razor yet. I may have to work on that one! We can all make small changes, one step at a time, that will make a huge difference to our planet, our wildlife and our oceans… and indeed better for our own health too.
