Dear Christchurch! Dare I say‌ At the time of this writing the weather has been really good! We had a great weekend away with the Cubs and Scouts camping. Having recently bought a converted van, this was an ideal opportunity. The van is used to transport all the magazines each month, but at the weekend the little fridge and cooker come into their own. I have to say I love it! Waking up in the middle of a field, not literally of course, and seeing the sun rising was really quite liberating! Hayden went climbing, abseiling, jumping up and down on trampolines, making fires and cooking apples, shooting at targets and generally having a whale of a time. I was never a girl guide myself and I have to say I think I missed out! If you have any Girl Guide or Scouting stories and photos, do send them to us and we will print them for you. Better care for patients with dementia “ONE gentleman was very vocal, and we discovered he liked to sing. We bought CDs of his favourite music - Frank Sinatra and swing - and he would sing to his heart’s content. He didn’t have a bad voice either...” The use of music is just one initiative helping older patients to cope with what can be a challenging and confusing experience. Dr Sue Hazel is the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch hospital’s lead consultant in dementia care, the implementation lead for the National Dementia Strategy within the two hospitals. Sue says this strategy has been the catalyst for a range of change across the two hospitals, as well as at Poole Hospital, and has helped to create a new era of progressive and patientcentred care. “We already work closely with our colleagues at Poole and the merger will give us an even more unified front,” said Sue. “We will have a greater impact in areas like ward environments, staff training and community involvement.” At Poole Hospital, consultant geriatrician Dr Premila Fade highlights the flagship Lulworth ward, where changes to the ward environment have been used to support dementia patients. “We improved the layout, colours and lighting to make the ward more welcoming,” said Premila. “A hospital visit can be very confusing for patients
Dr Sue Hazel working with colleagues with dementia, and anything we can do to make the environment easier helps. “Since Lulworth was refurbished we’ve been able to use the principles on other wards too.” Memory clinics for older and frailer patients, specially trained dementia ‘champions’, volunteer mealtime companions, unique patient ‘life diaries’ to help a patient’s stay that much more individual and comforting - all these initiatives and more form part of the award-winning and innovative work in place at all three hospitals. • Poole’s dementia carers played a key role in developing the hospital-wide Human Touch campaign, with 10 golden rules advising all staff how best to ensure that patients’ privacy and dignity is respected. • As well as the Dementia Care Pathway guidelines, Bournemouth also has its own ‘top tips’ for nurses around carrying out personal care, nutrition and bedtime among others. • Volunteer mealtime companions at both trusts – as well as brightly-coloured cutlery and crockery – help encourage patients to keep up their food intake as well as create a friendly mealtime experience.

Family Stories as Historical Evidence Due to a long standing bit of family misdirection I will now make a correction to last month’s article. It states that Sir John Kemp-Welch was the Lord of the Manor at Burton, when in fact it was George Meyrick. Sir John Kemp-Welch was the local member of Parliament. The source of this mistake lies in how it was recounted to me as a child and how it has travelled down through the family. Fortunately, in this instance, there is plenty of archived evidence. This led me to think about how family stories, whilst being a fascinating and important source of evidence, may also contain errors that need to be revised. Others stories are harder to research to find out how much truth they actually contain. A case in point is the assertion of my Grandmother that she remembers seeing, one night in 1930, a glow on the horizon that was a result of the R101 airship disaster in France. Sadly, nobody really believes her story and it is not easy to verify, (unlike the reports that people in this area could actually hear the guns of the Somme, which is widely documented). Another interesting story told to me by a relative was that during the Second World War, instead of going into the air raid shelters when the siren sounded, people stood on Jumpers Common and watched as the RAF attacked the German bombers. I can just imagine people doing this but is there anybody out there who can substantiate it? These are only a few examples of family stories that could shed light on historical events of local, national and international importance, and there must be hundreds of others out there. Why not expand the
possibilities to include local stories that pass between neighbours and friends. I can remember when I was researching the previous articles on Jumpers House. I was standing outside one of the buildings that stood on the site of the house when someone came out and told me the following story. He remembered an elderly neighbour telling him that when Jumpers House was hit by a German bomb in 1941, the cat ran off and refused to come back. This snippet does us show the human side of a known event and shows how small incidents are often remembered better than the major details. So however these stories are transmitted, once verified they can be an important tool for the researcher. If anyone can remember any story with a local twist I would be eager to hear from you. Let’s Celebrate Highcliffe Castle Highcliffe Castle is an on-going success story and a real asset to Christchurch. Not just because it is a significant tourist attraction due to it being considered the most important surviving house of the Romantic and Picturesque style of architecture, or its links to Gordon Selfridge, founder of an innovative major London Store. To those of us lucky enough to live within easy travelling distance, it offers refreshments and a destination after a pleasant stroll along the cliff top from the beaches at Mudeford, through the Steamer Point Nature Reserve. A variety of art exhibitions, musical and other events can be enjoyed throughout the year. As a resident a discounted annual season ticket is a really good idea. I became deeply interested in Highcliffe Castle when filming for the Christchurch Insiders’ Guide DVD, and was fortunate to have the excellent local historian, Ian Stevenson as one of the presenters. Many will be interested in its history, starting with its building from 1831 by Lord Stuart de Rothesay, through destruction by fire in the late 1960’s, to the partial restoration work recently completed. Guided tours are available thanks to the many knowledgeable volunteers who give so much to the community. One of these is Jane Noah, who as archivist is appealing for copies of any early documents or historic images of the Castle that you might have. Jane can be contacted on 01425 278807.
The recent ITV drama series ‘Mr Selfridge’ has captured the public’s imagination and a future programme may feature Highcliffe Castle. The original book by Lindy Woodhead is on sale in the Castle shop. Speaking of the future, David Hopkins, manager of Highcliffe Castle has ambitious plans for the restoration and display of the Castle’s medieval stained glass. He has reason to be hopeful of securing heritage lottery funding within a year. This is likely to be on the basis of matched funding where the lottery fund will put in several pounds for every pound that the Castle can raise. Mr Hopkins said, “We will have an expert conservator based on site in what will be a five year project. There will be real benefits to the community as the conservator will train others in the delicate art of restoration and these skills will be passed on to others. This will create a centre of excellence at Highcliffe which will become known for its heritage skills and will attract work into the area.” Now that has got to be worthwhile. Introducing... Macmillan Caring Locally The Macmillan Unit is situated in Christchurch Hospital which is par t of the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This is an NHS Unit, supported by Macmillan Caring Locally. The Unit offers specialist palliative care to patients with cancer with difficult symptoms related to their cancer. The Consultants are also happy to give advice regarding pain control for any patient with a terminal illness, usually at a one-off outpatient appointment. The Macmillan Unit has an inpatient ward caring for 18 patients, a team of Palliative Care Sisters who visit patients in the community, a day centre and a hospital support team who see patients in the Royal Bournemouth Hospital, and on other wards in Christchurch Hospital. The ward does not offer long term care for patients who do not
require specialist palliative care. The team works closely with the oncology teams at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital and Poole General Hospital. Patients are referred by their GP or by another hospital Consultant and will be seen for an initial assessment by one of the Macmillan Unit doctors, usually as an outpatient or on a domiciliary visit at home. Follow up will be by a Palliative Care Nurse liaising with the rest of the team at the Macmillan Unit. The Palliative Care Nurses work closely with the Primary Care Team. Patients with stable disease may be discharged from the service and may be re-referred at a later date. For more information telephone:
