Stour Chiropractic Clinic’s Advice for Spring Gardeners Late winter is a great time for gardeners to get an early start on preparing the garden for spring, and with everyone in a rush to get to those jobs done, there is a risk that gardeners may injure themselves ... don’t over do it with the trowel. With spring fast approaching, the nation’s gardeners will be dusting off their wellies and coming out of the woodwork as the gardening season sets in. Many people visit Stour Chiropractic Clinic to get their gardening related injuries or problems resolved. In an attempt to keep everyone healthy enough to actually enjoy sitting in their garden come summer time, Stour Chiropractic Clinic has identified some tips to help you get through those garden tasks safely. Don’t start with heavy-duty gardening - start with the lighter jobs, like cleaning and sharpening your gardening tools, and then move on. If you are pruning, use long handled secateurs and get as close to the plants as you can. Don’t twist – if you have to use a ladder to reach trees, hedges, large shrubs or fences – treat it like a dancing partner; always face it and move the ladder regularly. Always keep your shoulders, hips and knees pointing in the same direction. Also, make sure the ladder is firmly and safely planted in position and, wherever possible, have someone else standing at the base to keep an eye on things. If laying a patio, keep the slab close to your body and bend your knees. It is sometimes better to bend one knee rather two as your supporting leg gives you a position of strength. Dress appropriately – don’t wear tight, constricting clothes. Vary your activity; spend no more than 20-30 minutes on any one thing and take regular breaks. If you are planning a trip to the garden centre and buying heavy items like bags of compost or pebbles – buy more small bags, rather than one big bag. Smaller items are easier and safer to carry. If there is no other option, ask someone else to help carry it to the car and then when you get home, shovel out smaller quantities straight from the car and put it in to small containers. Treat gardening like normal exercise; you need to warm up and warm down. Pain is a warning sign – do not ignore it – if you start to ache then stop what you are doing. If you are in pain, remember, chiropractic is not just for backs. It also provides effective treatment for all types of soft tissue and joint disorders including ankle, knee, elbow and shoulder discomfort. You don’t have to put-up with pain.

Free swimming sessions for people with disabilities People with disabilities are being offered free swimming sessions at Two Riversmeet Leisure Complex in Christchurch. The sessions start on Wednesday 25 February, will run every Wednesday and are open to 14 to 17 year olds and adults with learning or physical disabilities. Sessions for 14 to 17 year olds are from 11am to 11.30am while adults over 18 have sessions running from 11.30am to 12 noon. They are run by a qualified Level 2 disability swimming instructor, though if the disabled person has a carer or support worker they will be needed in the pool to lend a hand.
Funding is being provided by Active Dorset County Sports and Physical Activity Partnership, which is committed to working towards increasing inclusion and developing sustainable and accessible sport and active recreation for disabled people in Dorset. Places on the sessions are limited so people are advised to book in advance or arrive in plenty of time to register for each session. Ann – Let’s talk Bond themes?
Blake – “It’s down to the fans and us, they tell us what they like us to sing, and so it’s all based on that, but also what proves popular in concerts too.” Ann – Eight years together, still enjoying it? Blake – “More than ever really, I mean now there are just the three of us, it’s like a new beginning really, and so it’s meant looking at things afresh and new directions.“ Ann – Some famous names on the new album too... tough choice to make? Blake – We have Camilla Kerslake, Chris Robshaw, Olga Kurylenko, Rebecca Newman, so many great names, and wonderful singers... We all feel blessed that they agreed to join us, and we hope all the fans love it too.” Ann – Do you all have choices, and who else would you love to duet with? Blake – “Barbra Streisand would be good, as well as someone like Lady Ga Ga I think mixing it up is the key to keeping the style fresh and fun.” Ann – You recently appeared at the famous White House in Washington?
Blake – “We all want to record a Bond theme, I mean we all look reasonable, and think it’s about time a British group had a crack at it, so why not us. We need someone to champion us, so will you do it Ann?” Ann – At the launch, you had some big named guests too – Cameron Mackintosh, and stars of Call the Midwife... Do you get nervous when they are in the audience? Blake – “Yes and now of course if Sir Cameron wants to offer all us leads in one of his wonderful musicals, then of course that would be tricky for us, but we know he is a great fan of our work.” Ann – What are the typical Blake fans? Blake – “Well Stylish, lovers of good music, and above all, impeccable taste (laugh)” Ann – What is next then gentlemen? Talking about Wildlife...
Would you go down to the woods today? Now that springtime is upon us, take a walk through the Dorset woodlands. Enjoy the sight of butterflies and birds; soak up the smell of bluebells and tree bark; and listen to the sound of birdsong. The woods can be mysterious, even frightening when early morning mists obscure the path or the moonlight casts strange shadows. However, the woodlands are also friendly places, home to a kaleidoscope of wildlife. They are a refuge for town and city dwellers who enjoy peace and tranquility, and home to some of the most important species in our ecosystem - trees. Since the beginning of time, we have admired trees for the longevity and their majestic appearances. They have been used as symbols of fertility, growth and resurrection; they have appeared in myths and folklore; and they have played an important role in religious narratives. Trees are fundamental to our wellbeing. They provide us with food, oxygen and numerous resources such as wood and coal. Furthermore, they have a positive effect on our mental health. They have been shown to reduce the effects of anxiety, ADHD and mental fatigue. Trees also have a positive effect on the environment. They absorb water, which helps to reduce flooding, and cleanse the soil from dangerous chemicals and pollutants. Additionally, they filter the air (you can spot clean air in woodland by the growth of lichen, a green moss-like plant which colonises trees) and absorb carbon dioxide, thereby combating the greenhouse effect. Trees even help to reduce the temperatures in large cities as they deflect sunlight.

ST GEORGE’S DAY CONCERT FOR CHARITY Wimborne Minster will be the venue for a concert organised by Cllr Robin Cook in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society and Friends of Victoria Hospital Wimborne, the charities he is supporting during his year in office as Chairman of East Dorset District Council. Starting at 7pm on Thursday 23rd April, the concert will be performed by Bournemouth University and Arts University of Bournemouth Orchestra and Chamber Choir featuring music by English composers. Robin said ‘I am delighted that the Universities have agreed to support this event, and will be able to show off their musical talent in this fine venue.’

Is that right? No. As of April 2014, the Government have said that people who want to issue an application at Court to resolve finances within a divorce must first attend a Mediation Information and Assessment meeting (known as a MIAM). This means that, apart from in very limited circumstances, you have to see a mediator and find out about mediation as an option. A MIAM will also inform you about other options open to you which include collaborative law, lawyer-assisted negotiations and the traditional court process.

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Nellie was ready for a break this month. After all it was half term and Hayden was off school, so what better excuse than to ‘get away’ for a few days. We live in such a gorgeous area it was difficult to choose where to go. Nellie eventually decided to take us just along the coast, through the New Forest, to the Shorefield Country Park near Milford on Sea. As the weather has been a bit unpredictable, and still a bit on the chilly side, we booked a small chalet with heating and Nellie parked herself proudly outside. I have to say that Nellie did well, the chalet was really good value for money and just what we needed for a few days off. There are some rather grand looking log cabins as well as impressive caravans on site with hot tubs outside, so maybe we will try one of those next time? Anyway what we had was perfect for what we wanted. We did arrive a bit early, all very keen to have our time off, so Nellie and her whistling kettle provided us with a lovely cuppa, while we waited for

Of course Hayden was very excited about the pool, so once we were settled in and bags were unpacked, (were we really only staying for a few days??) off we set for the leisure facilities. While Hayden practiced his hand stands at the deep end and generally glided around like I will never be able to do, I had a relaxed steam bath, sauna and jacuzzi. Much more fun… at least at 50! A caravan park from this viewpoint is ideal - it caters for all ages. What I liked about this park also is the setting. Located in a wonderful forest of trees, much wildlife, (I am sure we saw a woodpecker) and fields, yet the sea is literally ten minutes walk away. Saturday was glorious with blue skies and those well known English fleecy white clouds. Love it. We marched off for the coast, doing a short Geocache enroute. The ‘treasure’ this time was tiny and Stephen was the winner, finding it very well hidden in a bench.
29 29 Once we got to the sea there was a large banner warning us not to swim. Though it was sunny it was still a little chilly, so that made me smile. I then looked more closely at the banner and was fascinated by the iron sea defences that were very dangerously placed under the water at this time. That got me thinking about our coast line. This beach is full of pebbles and the waves were crashing vociferously onto them. If you close your eyes it is really quite dramatic. There is in fact a lot of work having to be done due to erosion, moving landscapes and these old sea defences. I discovered that the rock in this area is softer than that near Old Harry Rocks and there is a whole Shoreline Management Plan to help preserve our coastline all the way from Hurst Spit at Milford on Sea to Durlston Head near Swanage, including the bays in Poole and Bournemouth. That is all quite an undertaking! It is surprising really what we take for granted. The whole concept got me thinking about old times, the future and life in general, but that is a bit deep for the Adventures of Nellie! We had a whale of a time, not literally as we were not allowed to swim, throwing stones in

No Swimming?? I was so looking forward... the water, running enthusiastically away from the waves as they thundered towards us. Hayden got pretty wet and thought that was hysterical. He couldn’t stop laughing. There are many beach huts along this stretch and some are delightfully painted while others are quite dilapidated. From what I read there is a whole question over these English Seaside getaways and their safety in this area. I certainly would be sorry to see them go. One local artist was collecting smooth pebbles for her next project, coming down from her little wooden hideaway onto the beach with her bucket. How exiting. Finally we made it to…the café! It was perfect especially as it has a park for the children. “Needles Eye Café” it is called, obviously due to its stunning views of the coast and indeed The Needles on the Isle of Wight. After a good lunch, rest and relaxation, we set off back to the chalet and Nellie waiting patiently for us. We didn’t get to Hurst Castle and will have to save that for another trip. The fresh air, walk and wonderful views were just what we needed. What an amazing place we live in. So, where will Nellie go next? By Debbie Corney

“Cheers” at the Regent! New Circle Bar Opens! There were cheers all round at the Regent Centre in Christchurch, as the latest part of the rolling programme of improvements at the theatre and cinema came to fruition with the opening of the new Circle Bar within the totally refurbished Spreadbury Suite. Regent Manager, Greg Rawlings, who conceived and managed the entire project, was the first to get behind the bar to serve a celebratory drink to his Deputy Manager, Felicity Crabb. The Spreadbury Suite is situated on the mezzanine floor between the Foyer and the Circle and was originally known as the Spreadbury Room, consisting of offices and a small kitchen. It was named during the late 1980s after the six-time Mayor of Christchurch, Eric Spreadbury MBE. The Spreadbury Suite consists of a brand new kitchen, Volunteers cloakroom and a secure IT server room together with the new Circle Bar. Greg Rawlings, Manager of the Regent Centre, serves his deputy, Felicity Crabb, in the new Circle Bar
After a well-earned drink with his Deputy Manager, Greg Rawlings said: “The new Circle Bar will join the existing Foyer Bar with both being open to our patrons during intervals between live shows. Our Foyer Bar has always been exceptionally busy and having the Circle Bar coming on stream will enable everyone to get their drinks in comfort and in good time for the start of the second half of the show.” Greg Rawlings added “We are always looking for new Volunteers to come and join us at the Regent Centre and anyone who would like to help serve our patrons in the new Circle Bar should contact our Volunteer Co-ordinator, Julie Corbin on 01202 499199 for further details.” The Regent originally opened as the town’s cinema in 1931 before closing in 1973 and becoming a Mecca Bingo Hall until 1982. The Regent Centre in its present form as the theatre, cinema and concert hall serving Christchurch and the surrounding area, opened in 1983.

Reviving Highcliffe Residents and councillors have unveiled new signs in Highcliffe, Christchurch to act as an emblem of a revival which the village is undergoing. Despite having some great beaches as well as the Grade 1 listed Highcliffe Castle, the village has suffered from being judged by its statistic of having the largest number of residents over the age of 60 in the country. A group of enthusiastic residents has now been formed to dispel the myth of Highcliffe being the town that time forgot. The Highcliffe Centre Partnership has been formed to look at ways of encouraging more people to shop in the village High Street. A consultation held recently asked local residents for feedback about the local shopping experience and the Partnership is using the results to identify any changes that could be made to benefit trade. A band of happy and willing residents can now been seen regularly litter picking and weeding throughout the area and will soon be replanting the planters in the shopping area and even partaking in a bit of painting and decorating. A campaign is being launched, called Highcliffe Revival, which will encompass a number of events. The first of these will be the Highcliffe Revival Food Festival, held in association Christchurch Food & Wine Festival. This will be taking place on the Saturday following the Christchurch event, Saturday 16 May. Details of that event are being finalised and will be publicised soon. The Highcliffe Centre Partnership has garnered the support of leading retail marketing consultant, Mary Portas, who is delighted that they are intent on making things happen. Mary said: “It is important to maintain a vibrant high street as the benefits of this are seen in many layers from the residents who live in the area, to the tourists who come to the area, to the
increase in revenue enjoyed by the business owners.” Malcolm Mawbey from the Highcliffe Centre Partnership said: “Since we started the Partnership we have seen a groundswell of interest from people willing to lend their help and expertise in making our campaign a success. If any other residents want to get involved we’d love to hear from them.” On unveiling one of the new signs, the Mayor of Christchurch Cllr Denise Jones said: “I congratulate everyone from different sectors in Highcliffe who have got together to make something happen. Instead of sitting back and saying ‘do something for us’ they are working with partners to achieve something together. “These signs will be something that represents the village and will be seen by everyone coming to Highcliffe.” The Highcliffe signs were designed by Josephine Flood and Kirsty Threadgill from The Solent Group, who were at the unveiling along with residents and councillors. Sea Scouts celebrate swim win 10th Christchurch (Mudeford) Sea Scouts are celebrating having come out winners of the Otter Trophy at the Royal Navy Recognised Sea Scout Swimming Championships. Nearly 200 Sea Scouts and Explorers from across the country travelled to HMS Raleigh, a shore based training establishment near Torpoint, Cornwall to compete in this national gala. The prestigious Otter Trophy dates back to the 1930s and has been competed for annually apart from the war years. This year’s scout team of Alex Bamford, Finley Dickinson, Daniel Jupp, Harry Lloyd, Jack Ogden, and Martin Underwood were triumphant in winning the overall Otter trophy against 22 other groups. The scouts also won the Squadron Relay and came first in the under 14 category and third in the under 12s. Scout leader Julian Smith said: “Well done to all the Scouts and Neptune Explorers who represented Mudeford, gave good individual performances and in particular thank you for their excellent standard of behaviour. “This was the first time in 30 years that Mudeford Sea Scouts have won this national trophy which is almost as big as our younger members! The whole competition had a great spirit and we came away having made many friends from all over the country.”

“Hi Everyone. My name is Abby, I am 13 and love ponies and horses! I am going to tell you about life at the yard. It is a great place with beautiful views, near Poole. It has about 40 horses and ponies of all shapes and sizes from mini Shetland ponies to beautiful large thorough breds. It is a very friendly yard with lots of chatting (there are a lot of girls…) and laughs as well as hard work. Here is the lovely Banjo. He is very cheeky, fun and full of personality. I have been riding him since May. He is 24 an old gentleman in human years but absolutely full of life. He loves fruit including melons, polo mints and hugs! At the weekend Banjo was helping me ‘poo pick’ in his field… as you can see. Well I am not sure helping is the right word! Sometimes we take a break from all of our mucking out, grooming, sweeping and general yard duties…. This is Ruby the dog enjoying attention and a jumping lesson with the girls. The outdoor life is great, if a little cold at this time of year, but my regular flask of hot chocolate always saves the day. Thanks Mum…”

Renaissance Retirement’s Fleur-de-Lis in Christchurch set for March Grand Opening Ringwood-based Renaissance Retirement is holding its official Grand Opening of its prestigious Fleur-deLis retirement development on Saturday 28 March and Sunday 29 March. Fleur-de-Lis’ perfect location is at the heart of the company’s collection of 26 new retirement apartments located to the rear of Christchurch High Street, overlooking Druitt Gardens. The apartments will provide luxurious living spaces ideally suited for downsizers looking to maintain a quality standard of independent living in the region. The much anticipated opening of the entire site has been limited to 80 people with a special event. With 30% of the apartments reserved off plan, the company is hoping to be sold out within the next six months. Nick Watkins, Development Director said: “We are expecting to take a number of reservations over the weekend but the main point of the event is for potential buyers to get a real feel for the development. Renaissance Retirement launched two show apartments and a sales office in October last year, but this will be the first opportunity to view the entire development.” As well as being able to view the stunning owners’ lounge and internationally themed tea rooms, guests will be able to view a number of one and two bedroom apartments and the grounds of the site. Renaissance Retirement managing director, Robert Taylor, added: “We are looking forward to our Grand Opening on the 28th and 29th March. It’s a special
development and we had some exceptionally good feedback from many of the people who have visited the site so far. I am looking forward to showing people around the development and hopefully, taking reservations on the day. ” Fleur-de-Lis has been built on the site of the town’s old Cornfactor building which was originally the central hub of the district’s corn market dating back to the 1800s. The stylish development will be partially built using local Portland stone. The building itself has also been conscientiously designed to preserve the view of the stunning 19th century spire of the Christchurch Christian Centre. In order to achieve its vision of preserving this heritage view, Renaissance Retirement has removed two units from the center of the building and replaced them with a glass link through which the church spire is visible from Druitt Park. Nick added: “To avoid disappointment we advise anyone who would like to be on the guest list for the Grand Opening weekend to contact us immediately. It will be on a first come, first serve basis.” Renaissance Retirement was handpicked by HRH Prince of Wales to build the first ever retirement development at Poundbury, Dorchester in the 1990s, and has an enviable reputation for quality build and finishes.
