Dear Christchurch, Easter is coming up and hopefully some good weather! Do you have anything planned for the children? Maybe an Easter Egg Hunt or a family weekend away? Hayden, our son had his first over night cubs “Expedition” last week. A two hour hike in the dark, then a night in a tent with 3 friends. He arrived back exhausted after 3 hour hours sleep he told me. Funnily enough, where I thought he maybe cold out in the open he told me he was too hot, which is why he couldn’t sleep! I couldn’t believe it, that really surprised me. It turned out they were “camping” indoors!! Now, do you need something doing in the house, the garden, or do you want a good evening out? Take a look at all we have to offer you inside The Christchurch Directory. There maybe just what you are looking for. The local advertisers would really appreciate your calls, as always. Any of them will give you advice and help, so please use their services and don’t forget to mention the little booklet when talking to them. We also have some local data for you as well as other interesting articles to read. If you have a local club or society and want some free promotion please give me a call. If you have a business and wish to advertise, we offer a free editorial with a three month’s package. This is a great way to let the local people know more about what you can do to help them. Do give me a call on this. Stephen and I hope you have a great month of March and Wish you a Very Happy Easter, Best Wishes,

Better together: ensuring high quality local care The coming few months will see our three local hospitals in the public spotlight like never before. The proposed merger of The Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (RBCH) and Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (PHFT) is set to pave the way for a new era in healthcare. The proposal - the first of its kind in the country - aims to draw together the best of all healthcare facilities provided at our hospitals, Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch, and meet the challenges that face the NHS in the future. Over the course of the next few months, we will publish a series of monthly features. They will highlight how we will continue to meet the needs of the area’s population, provide the highest level of healthcare, and retain services locally and existing areas of good practice.

Why merge?

Providing first class, quality care locally and being able to invest in services in the future are of paramount importance to us. The proposed merger provides many benefits for patients and improved outcomes, through increased consultant-led care and receiving the right treatment at the right time. It will ensure we can continue to invest in local patient services. Combining the skills and strengths of both organisations, that are already providing excellent patient care, places the new Bournemouth and Poole NHS Foundation Trust (if the merger is approved) in the strongest position possible to meet the challenges that lie ahead. There are many examples of where we already work together as separate organisations but we have gone as far as we can. It would be very difficult to begin to realise further benefits, achieve sustainability or address the challenges without merger.

Christchurch

How will the merger affect me?

It is important to remember that outpatient and day case services will remain at all three hospitals, so the vast majority of patients will see no difference in the first class way services are provided. To ensure services can remain local, the new organisation will need to look at how some specialist services will be provided. This will be done together with GPs, clinicians, patients and the public, and any proposals will be fully consulted on. As well as ensuring the continued provision of local, firstclass, quality care and investment in the future, there are many benefits to staff and patients which we will explore over the coming months in this feature. We firmly believe that merger is the right thing to do for our patients to ensure they continue to receive high quality care locally. Over the coming months you will hear from a range of staff from our hospitals. We hope you find the features useful and informative. Jane Stichbury Chairman, The Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Angela Schofield Chairman, Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

NEXT MONTH: Meet Robert Talbot, Medical Director of the proposed new Trust If you have a question about your local hospitals, let us know. We will try to answer the most common ones over the coming months. The Disputed Will of Jumpers House Jumpers House was a fine, secluded mansion surrounded by lawns and gardens. You can best place it by knowing that part of The Crooked Beams Restaurant was once the gatehouse. As mentioned in my previous article, there are many interesting stories attached to this building. One of the more interesting is the story of a disputed will that involved a friend of Charles Dickens and also showed great generosity. For reasons of space I shall attempt to make the story concise and, hopefully, still retain the important facts of the case. In 1776 Benjamin Bullock acquires Jumpers House amongst other properties when he marries Margaret Payne Woolls, who in turn was bequeathed it by her brother on his death in 1759. Over the next ten years or so he gradually gathers more properties into his estate, at the same time he consolidates his standing in the community by giving money to local charities and becoming a deputy lieutenant in the Christchurch Militia. A year before his death in September 1824 aged 74 he adds a codicil to his will; ‘...Jumpers House and 40 acres of land in trust to my adopted child Jane West, the infant daughter of Mary West, spinster now residing with me shall attain the age of 21 years; also to my adopted daughter Jane West, all my household goods...about my said mansion at the time of my decease’. Jane was born in 1818 to Benjamin’s servant Mary. As the 1820’s were a time of recession and hardship, his bequeathing his entire estate to the daughter of a favoured servant does denote good philanthropic ideals. However, a court case is heard at Winchester that is covered by the Times. The essentials of the case are that Benjamin

Bullock made a will in 1820 leaving all his property in trust to his nieces and nephews, (he and his wife had a daughter who died as a child). As seen in 1823, he added codicils making Jumpers House and 40 acres separate from his other estates and it was to be kept in trust to Jane. The argument was that the will was blank when it mentions the acreage of Jumpers Estate and that someone in a different hand had written the number forty when it was known that the estate was actually eighty acres. It seems that someone wanted to reduce the amount of acreage ascribed to the house, which was made easier by the fact that there was no boundary marker denoting the extent of the land. The court found in favour of the representatives of the girl and the house subsequently included eighty acres. The presiding judge, Mr Justice Gaselee (who was a close friend of Charles Dickens), had to step down from hearing the case as he was a trustee. It is not clear which side he was a trustee for, and another judge had to take over. I will come back to Jane’s later life in a further article as it shows the breakup of the estate into the Jumpers we know today. Damien Bates BA(hons)

Kids get cooking again in Christchurch Food Festival’s Kids Kitchen O n e o f t h e h i g h l i g ht s o f t h e Christchurch Food & Wine Festival is set to be part of this year’s event once again. The Kids Kitchen workshops will be taking place at The Priory School in Wick Lane on the same days as the Festival Market – Saturday 11 May and Sunday 12 May - thanks to continued sponsorship from the Rotary Club of Christchurch This year’s Kids Kitchen will feature workshops for youngsters aged three to 14 years old. Little Munchkins Cookery Parties for three to five year olds will take place four times each day giving the very youngest a chance to make cakes and pizzas. Six to ten year olds can join Lesley’s Little Chefs to make their own soup and fruit trifles while six to nine year olds and ten to 14 year olds can take part in the Junior and Senior versions of Baking FUN-damentals with Flavours School of Cookery. The final workshop, for nine to 14 year olds, will show how to make two classic soups – minestrone and spiced vegetable. Waitrose will be providing the food to be cooked by the young chefs and all workshops will last for an hour and a half and cost £5 each, to include a goodie bag.

Dr David Rogers, president of the Rotary Club of C h r i s tc h u rc h said: “The Rotary Club is delighted to be able to support this event in the Christchurch Food & Wine Festival once again. “Teach a chef at an impressionable age and they’ll be able to cook forever!” Tickets are now available online at www.regentcentre.co.uk or can be booked over the phone on 01202 499199 and at the Regent Centre box office in person. For full details of the Kids Kitchen workshops and links to buy tickets, go to: www.christchurchfoodfest.co.uk/ kidskitchen.asp

‘Don’t be Afraid of the Mouse!’ Are you staring at a new computer which has found its way into your house? Did someone give you a gift that hasn’t been touched? Perhaps your old computer is still crying out to be used properly?! Either way it’s there and it’s eyeing you up suspiciously! When this happens we worry about how to use the thing properly, getting stuck and not recalling what to do or where to start. Firstly, concentrate on what interests you the most. There is no point learning things that you don’t need to. Make a list of what you want to do: email friends, do the grocery shopping, research hobbies? “But hold on!” (I hear you say) “What’s an email account? Is it safe to use my credit card online? Turn it on and off? I have to do that too??!!!” Fret not. As Silver Training’s Bournemouth tutor I will set you up and guide you through what interests you the most with step by step lessons at home. We will plan your learning to suit what you wish to get out of your machine. I come to you so you don’t even have to leave the house! So put those excuses away…..and have a

lesson to get started today! (We even throw in free training material in case you can’t remember what you have learned!) I am part of the UK’s largest network of home computer tutors, Silver Training, am fully background checked and already have many happy clients in the area! Call now on freephone 0800 862 0666 to book a lesson or visit the website: www.silvertraining.co.uk. Deborah Guy Silver Training Tutor for Bournemouth and surrounding area
