Dorset Quirky Facts It would be hard not to fall in love with Dorset. With its easy charm and inspiring scenery, many have come to adore the beautiful county in all its glory. Whilst it may be difficult to fully explore Dorset’s finest hidden gems during this current climate, from a local landmark often visited by Thomas Hardy to a special kind of local cheese to enjoy, here is another handful of some of the fascinating facts from around Dorset. 1. One person who would openly confess his love of Dorset was famed author Thomas Hardy who would likely share his fondness of the county with another love in his life.The lady in question was a certain Eliza Nicholls to whom Thomas Hardy was greatly attached. The two would spend as much

time as possible together and loved to visit Clavell Tower which was built in 1830. The tower, noted for its circular structure, was built as an observatory looking out over the beautiful Dorset coastline. 2. As so many are celebrating Dorset from the safety of their own home, one of the finest products produced in the county must surely be the Dorset Blue Vinney. It could be said that the local cheese had somewhat of an humble origin after it was created with the left-over skimmed milk from the butter which many Dorset farmers sold in markets. Now it is celebrated and guarded with Protected Geographical Status and has in the past few decades enjoyed great popularity. 3. It would be difficult to select one particular area of Dorset as a favourite however countless visitors as well as local residents have often favoured Lulworth Cove which is not only recognised for its sheer beauty but also its geological importance. types of rocks can be seen at Lulworth Cove including, Chalk, Wealden Clay, Purbeck Beds, Greensand and Portland Stone, all of which provide a fascinating and rare insight into the geological history of this amazing part of Britain. 4. Did you know that the Portland Bill is the southernmost point in Dorset and that the lighthouse was built in 1906 to replace the two existing lighthouses? The iconic red and white structure has become a popular visitor

attraction as many flock to see the lighthouse which helped to uphold the tradition of providing a guiding light for seafarers. Interestingly, the need for a light was recognised as early as the Roman times when a fire was lit to warn vessels of the dangerous coastlines around the Isle of Portland. 5. King Charles II’s flight from his defeat at the Battle of Worcester and his subsequent journey is a tale that has often been told however an interesting snippet of Dorset’s history also includes the story of how the king’s plans for escape were scuppered by a local woman. The king was eager to escape to France and eventually a certain Captain Limbry was willing to use his ship to transport the monarch. However, the captain’s wife uncovered the plan and whether disapproving of the king or anxious for her husband’s safety, locked Captain Limbry - and reportedly his clothes - away so that he could not help the monarch! Lulworth Cove & Durdle Door Walk Length - 2.5 miles / 4.1 km
Ascent - 800 feet / 242 metres Time - 2 hours 0 minutes Grade - easy Author - Lou Johnson Lulworth Cover and Durdle Door are two of the best known features of Dorset’s Jurassic Coast. This short walk includes some uphill walking but the path is good and well graded. Walk Description: This short walk includes two of the most famous features on the Dorset Coast, namely the circular inlet of Lulworth Cove and the rock arch known as Durdle Door.

The start is the main car park next to the visitor centre at Lulworth Cove (Grid ref. SY 821800). This can be a very busy place during peak times and if you prefer a quiet walk then do avoid peak holiday periods. From the car park take the broad paved path heading uphill westwards towards the coast.All the height gained on this section will be lost as you descend to Durdle Door and as you have guessed will have to be climbed again to return to Lulworth Cove. Reaching the summit of the first hill you get the first good

view of the Dorset Coast with its fine white cliffs. Stay on the main South west Coast Path to reach Durdle Door where you can descend to the beach to get a better view of the rock arch. To complete the walk return by the outward route to the
car park continuing past the information centre to reach the shingle beach of Lulworth Cove. Almost completely circular the cove provides a sheltered haven for small boats and is a pleasant place to spend some time before returning to the start of the walk.

Honey bees There are over 250 types of bees in the UK but there is only one european honey bee (Apis mellifera). Sadly our Honey Bees are not protected species so they need our help and support more than ever. They are vital for pollina on of crops and many flowering plants.
Why do bees swarm? Swarming is a honey bee colony's natural means of reproduc on. In the process of swarming, a single colony splits into two or more dis nct colonies. In this state the bees will be docile and should be quite easily be collected by a beekeeper. A swarm is usually a temporary phenomenon as the bees will be sending out scouts to look for a permanent home. When a new home is found, usually within 24 hours, the bees will fly off to start a new colony. Swarms in the New Forest normally occur between April un l mid-July.
Are swarms dangerous? A swarm of bees are generally unlikely to s ng. When bees swarm, they will gather in a ten to twenty metre area and will try to cluster on a branch or bush or even under the eaves of a roof. This will con nue for an hour or so, but they will eventually se le down and the large hanging cluster of bees will be clearly visible - this is a swarm. Call the Swarm Coordinator on 07976 258062 for help and advice. The most common insects are honeybees, bumblebees and wasps. There are other kinds of insects that are confused with these, such as Ivy bees, Solitary bees and hornets.

Local Stargazing Pages Welcome to The Christchurch Directory Stargazing Page. Each month I’ll be describing astronomical events that are happening overhead in our beautiful night skies. The majority of them are viewable just by stepping out at the appropriate time and looking up, but some may require a particular vantage point (e.g. a clear view to the west). A cloudless sky is (usually) required! Some viewings will benefit from using binoculars or a small telescope if you have one, but most observations can be enjoyed without either. For your safety, please remember to wait until the sun has set before observing the night sky. International Space Station The International Space Station (ISS) is usually visible at some point during
the night, but often at unsociable hours. During the summer months it is even trickier to see due to the extended daylight hours. At the time of going to press, the only ‘sociable’ overhead pass of the ISS in our skies this month is on the June 1st around 10.10pm. It will be visible moving from west to south, but observing it will require a clear, unblocked view as it will be very low in the sky. Times are subject to change, therefore please visit the free website www. heavens-above.com to obtain accurate flyover timings. Mercury Very difficult to spot this month, but for the first few days of June, if you have a clear, low view to the west after sunset you may spot Mercury towards the WNW.

21 Venus You may have noticed that the bright ‘star’ in the western evening sky has vanished. Although lost to the glare of the sun for the first half of the month, Venus reappears in mid-June as the ‘morning star’. Mars, Saturn & Jupiter Currently these three planets are visible only in our (very early) morning skies. Over the next couple of months they will move into our evening sky, and as the nights darken they will be better placed for observing. If you cannot wait until then, head out between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. and look towards the south east. Mars is the bright, reddish object on the left, whilst the two bright objects to the right are Saturn and Jupiter (brighter of the two). In the early hours of June 9th the Moon joins the two gas giants making for a pleasant view (see diagram). Moon This month’s full moon on June 5th is traditionally known as the Strawberry Moon. Named by Native American tribes, it is associated with the time of year when strawberries ripen and are ready to pick. In Europe and other countries, June’s full moon is known by many names, including the Rose Moon, Mead Moon and Hot Moon. Other astronomical things of note this month… Midsummer, or the Summer Solstice (from the Latin for ‘the sun stands still’) occurs on June 20th this year. For the northern hemisphere, it
marks the day when the sun reaches its highest point in the sky at noon. This means we experience the ‘longest day’ of the year (the longest period of daylight in one day). The early summer months are the best time to try and spot a rare and beautiful cloud-type: noctilucent clouds. If conditions are favourable, these blue-white illuminated clouds are visible thirty minutes after sunset for a couple of hours, typically in our northern skies. Although the exact cause of their formation is unknown, we know they are composed of tiny water ice crystals and form about 80km up in the atmosphere. Although June itself isn’t well-known for any named meteor showers, in 2014 the UN officially designated June 30th to be Asteroid Day. This day was chosen as it marks the anniversary of the Tunguska Event that took place in Siberia in 1908. Asteroid Day aims to raise awareness about asteroids, and due to the current global situation all events are going ‘online’, so feel free to check it out at https://asteroidday.org/ updates/asteroid-day-2020/ One exciting event over the next few months to watch out for will be NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft taking a scoop of material from an asteroid known as Bennu. This sample will be returned to Earth for scientific study in 2023. The spacecraft did a bit of a dress rehearsal last month, and all went well! £40k grant to support health care coalition focusing on sharing end of life experiences A group of health care providers across Dorset are working together on a new project focusing on sharing end of life experiences thanks to a one-off grant of £40,000 made by Dorset Clinical Commissioners. Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Forest Holme Hospice, Dorset Health Care and Lewis Manning Hospice Care will be collaborating to focus on making it easier for people approaching the end of life, and their families, to share their experiences, learn from and support each other. The group have also teamed up with Care Opinion (www.careopinion.org.uk) to make it easy for people to share their experiences in their own words online. Clare Gallie, CEO of Lewis-Manning Hospice Care, said: “This project will help us to understand what our patients really want and allow us to focus our support on what really matters to them’’. Palliative and end of life care staff will be invited to respond (including online) to people who have shared their stories. This has been shown in other areas to have a positive impact on staff morale, confidence and sense of purpose at work. The group, including people with lived experience of care at end of life, is also working with values specialist Jackie LeFèvre to understand what stories tell us about what’s most important to us. Saskie Dorman, Consultant in Palliative Medicine at Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust who is based at Forest Holme Hospice, Seldown Road, Poole, explained: “The current standard surveys
and requests for feedback from families and patients are relatively impersonal. We don’t learn as much as we could or should from people’s experiences, both what went well and what needs to improve. This work will help us to learn directly from the stories and experiences shared about what’s important to people about their care and support, what’s working well and what needs to be improved.” Dorset Health Care, added, “The opportunity to be part of this project will expand our current patient experience measures and continues our commitment to put patients, carers and their families at the heart of everything we do. We want people to be able to share their experiences of health and care in ways which are safe, simple, and lead to learning and change which we feel is achievable by subscribing to Care Opinions.”

The idea of what constitutes a good summer varies greatly according to one’s interests, and the average child or beach lover is happy with bright sun every day but gardeners and farmers crave a bit of moderation.

Perfection might be sunshine all day and rain at night but that rarely happens so we usually have to spend some time rescuing our water starved plants at some point through the summer. It is better to water heavily, soaking the soil occasionally rather than giving a light shower which will just encourage the roots to the surface and the water will never get down to where it is needed.
Don’t worry about the lawn - grass really is as tough as old boots and although it might look like the Gobi desert, it will all come back to life after a decent drop of rain. If the theories about global warming and warmer summers are to be believed, perhaps we should consider growing more plants that are happier in drier, more Mediterranean conditions rather than our traditional cottage garden varieties. Many grey or silver- leaved plants are a good example. Think about lavenders, rosemary, cistus, many ornamental grasses, bamboo and herbs.

It is becoming increasingly evident that looking a�er ourselves and our planet is vital to our survival as well as the plants and animals who live with us. In our current me the birds, the animals, the plants and the marine life are all thriving! Now is a great opportunity to con nue this improvement and protect our planet even further. How many products do we use that are not environmentally safe, or have been tested unnecessarily on animals? Can we change our habits and start to think more about what we do and what we buy? Soap for example - which we are using so much of currently. Oh dear, soap. Since when did we start purchasing soap in bo les? This is so easy to replace with good quality, wonderful smelling natural soaps. These soaps not only have enhancing proper es for our skin, but they do not harm the environment! All the “Friendly” soaps on the website below are Free from Palm Oil, Parabens, Sulphates, Triclosan, Phthalates and Cruelty, as well as being boxed in plas c-free recycled (and recyclable) packaging. Lovely. Another product we use a lot of is toothpaste. Tradi onal toothpaste is not only stored in environmentally damaging plas c, but it contains chemicals which could be damaging to our own health too. The toothpastes here are natural and contained in glass, which can be reused. Tea Tree is known for its powerful healing proper es, throughout history. Tea Tree leaves have been used to heal cuts, treat burns, and as a topical applica on for infec ons. This toothpaste is a paste-like clay, so it takes a li le adjus ng, but is much less harsh on any aging gums. The other alterna ve are the peppermint toothpaste tablets. These are useful, with a more tradi onal flavour and would be ideal for when we start travelling again. As they are not liquid, they will not take up any hand luggage space, in those li le plas c bags!
Of course, a plas c free toothbrush to go with it, is perfect. Go on, give the sustainable beechwood version a go. You will feel so much be er for it. Be er for you and be er for the environment. There is a children’s one too with so� bristles. These toothbrushes are suitable for all the family.

Road Safety: Breakdown Advice Breaking down on the road can be a frustrating, unpleasant, and sometimes dangerous and scary, experience. Every year, people are killed or seriously injured while stopped on the roadside, but many drivers don’t know how to keep safe in the event of a breakdown. Motorway breakdowns In a breakdown situation, the most important thing for drivers to consider is the safety of themselves and other road users, particularly on high speed roads like motorways. Hard shoulders are extremely dangerous places – one in 11 motorway deaths involve a vehicle on, entering or leaving the hard shoulder. If your vehicle develops a problem on the motorway: • if your car develops a fault but you can continue driving, leave the motorway at the next available exit and stop at the service area; • if the problem requires you to stop immediately, pull onto the hard shoulder and stop as far away from the traffic as you can, with the wheels turned to the left, if possible next to an emergency phone; • never use a warning triangle on the hard shoulder of the motorway, as walking along the hard shoulder to place a warning triangle puts you at risk of being hit;
• never sit in your vehicle on the hard shoulder, even if the weather is bad. This is dangerous as you are at risk of being struck from behind at high speed; • put on your hazard lights and get out on the left hand side, and wait on the verge, well away from traffic; • anybody who is unable to leave the vehicle, for example someone with mobility issues, should wait inside the vehicle with their seatbelt securely fastened. • Never be tempted to try and fix your vehicle on the hard shoulder yourself – this is dangerous. Call for help instead, using an emergency phone if one is accessible without walking along the hard shoulder. These connect directly to the police control centre, and are numbered so that you can easily be located. Blue and white marker posts show the direction to the nearest phone. Using the hard shoulder is legally permitted in only three instances:

43 in a breakdown, an emergency, or if being pulled over by the police. Making a phone call, taking a toilet break or reading a map are not acceptable reasons to stop on the hard shoulder. Breakdowns on any other type of road If you breakdown somewhere other than the motorway, follow these guidelines to keep as safe as possible: • if it is possible, avoid stopping in a dangerous place, such as on a roundabout, on a corner or near a brow. If you can safely keep driving for a short distance, drop your speed, use your hazard lights and try to pull off the road completely or in a location where you’re clearly visible; • if you have to stop on a road, switch your hazard lights on. Only display an emergency triangle at least 45 metres behind your vehicle if it is safe for you to
do so. Do not put yourself in a risky situation in putting out the triangle, and never use one on the hard shoulder of a motorway; • do not attempt to fix your vehicle yourself at the roadside. Call a breakdown service; • switch your engine off and stand as far away from the road as possible so you are not close to passing traffic; • if you are involved in a crash that is serious, obstructs the road, or involves injuries, call the emergency services as soon as possible. If you have first aid training, provide appropriate, immediate help to anyone who is hurt. Make sure you are prepared in case you breakdown by: • carrying a mobile phone so that you can call for assistance, but on the motorway use a roadside phone if possible; • carrying a map so you can easily explain where you are when calling for assistance. You can use a map app on your phone, but you may not have signal if you breakdown somewhere remote; • keeping an emergency kit in your car, which should have a torch, a warning triangle, warm clothes and a reflective jacket or vest. Tastes so good... Spanish Baked Eggs
A taste from the Costas – ideal served as lunch with a fresh green salad, and eaten al fresco (if the British Summer weather allows!) A perfect holiday reminder that’s quick and easy to prepare.
Ingredients for 4 servings 4 x large free range eggs 100g sliced chorizo 1 onion finely sliced 1 red/yellow pepper sliced 2 crushed garlic cloves ½ tsp paprika 400g can chopped tomatoes 2 tbsp. olive oil Chopped parsley
1. Pre-heat oven to 200c/Fan180C/400F/Gas Mark 6 2. In a heated pan, add olive oil and lightly cook the chorizo and onion for about 4 minutes until soft. Add the pepper and cook. 3. Stir in the paprika and garlic and cook for about a minute before adding the tomatoes to the pan. Simmer until all ingredients are soft. 4. Pour into an ovenproof dish, make four wells and carefully crack the eggs over the mixture into each well, cover with foil and bake in pre-heated oven for approx. 10 minutes or until the eggs are just set but the yolks should still be runny.
Serve with: Green Salad Crusty/toasted bread
5. Optional – you can add some parsley to top the baked mixture Serve with a fresh green salad of your choice with crusty or toasted bread, and enjoy. Try varying the ingredients for new tastes, for example with extra peppers, sliced potato or even baked beans.
