Dear Christchurch, I hope you all had a great Bank Holiday weekend for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee! My sister and I were remembering the Silver Jubilee and have a photo to prove how much we enjoyed it with our home made Jubilee hats at the street party. All good fun! There were certainly lots of picnics in the park, parties and other celebrations last weekend so I do hope you had a good time. We have lots of interesting articles this month... There is the Christchurch Food and Wine Festival, a very intriguing and beautiful Castle on the cliff, the Big Little Theatre School has a competition for you, there’s a very moving charity “Zoe’s Wish” which you can support, the Regents Centre is giving prize tickets for the winner of the wordsearch and Terry and Vera Baber have an announcement! (Please let me know if you have one of your own for us to print for you.) All good news so grab a cup of tea or coffee and have a well deserved read. Great Christchurch Bake Day revives spirit of English fêtes The spirit of vintage English fêtes was revived in a new event held as part of this year’s Christchurch Food & Wine Festival. The Great Christchurch Bake Day & Fête, held at Christchurch Quay, not only had an old-fashioned fair with a giant helter-skelter, hoopla stall and face painting, sponsored by Frettens Solicitors, but also had a traditional cake and jam competition. The competition, judged by the winner of BBC’s Great British BakeOff, Jo Wheatley, attracted entries from nearly 90 people in a range of categories from chutney to chocolate cake. Jo, along with the other two judges – Mary Reader, the Food Festival President, and Jenny Budzynski from ‘Miss Ingredient’ - faced the daunting task of tasting every entry before coming up with the winners. Jo Wheatley said: “The standard of the cakes was amazing, particularly the children’s ones which really blew me away. I think the whole event was fantastic – like a quintessential English garden party.” Co-sponsors, The Captains Club, provided a ‘pop-up’ restaurant and champagne bar while there was also a vintage tea room for traditional afternoon teas.

The warm weather encouraged visitors young and old to come along and enjoy the fun and there were plenty of fathers and mothers using their children as an excuse to try out the helter-skelter!

Case Study: The Mildenhalls Grand Kitchen Plan Mr and Mrs Mildenhall from Ashley Heath, Dorset recently commissioned Granite Transformations to rejuvenate their kitchen from bland to grand. After receiving a few kitchen quotes and looking at many options to tackle the interior redecoration, they agreed that Granite Transformations was the right way to proceed. ‘We were really impressed by the DVD Granite Transformations sent us. It showed us exactly what we wanted to see. It clearly described what and how the work would be done and seemed very appropriate for the effect we trying to accomplish in our kitchen.’ Mr Mildenhall commented. ‘The kitchen is about seven years old; we bought the house as new so although in fine condition, it just didn’t work. We’ve laid a new floor, fitted co-ordinating wall tiles and finally Granite Transformations has sorted

the worktops. It looks like a brand new kitchen now.
