Dear Muderford, Somerford, Stanpit, Friars Cliff, Purewell and Burton! July already! The children will soon be off school and many of us we will taking our yearly holiday. It is always such an exciting time. We just hope the sun will shine and we can all get outdoors to enjoy the fresh air. Nellie did take us for a refreshing evening out, with a momentary ‘blip’, which you can read about on page 38. We are looking forward to a camping trip very soon, so you will hear all about that in our next issue. Past Mayor of Christchurch hands cheques to her charities The immediate past Mayor of Christchurch, Cllr Denise Jones, has handed out cheques amounting to £9,900 to the three charities she chose to support during her mayoral year. The Royal British Legion Christchurch Branch, Somerford ARC and Dorset Cancer Centre at Poole Hospital each received £3,300 which was raised by the Cllr Mrs Jones as Mayor during her year of office. Cllr Mrs Jones said: “All three of these organisations are very dear to my heart and I am delighted to have been involved with them and to have raised funds for them.
“All three of them provide services which can really change people’s lives. The Royal British Legion upholds the memory of those who have died during conflicts but also helps those who have survived. Somerford ARC is a community centre which, along with the Greenhouse Fellowship which uses the centre, reaches out to provide help and support to local people. And I know from personal experience that the medical expertise provided by Dorset Cancer Centre at Poole Hospital to people across the conurbation is something to be proud of. “I would like to thank them all for the compassion and care that they all show.”

Deciding to manage a property yourself, or paying for an agent to do it on your behalf is a big decision.
Landlords need to carefully assess their available time, skills and abilities, so as to ensure the safeguarding of a property and the people who will live in it, and importantly, make the whole process as stress free as possible. Renting out a property for the first time can feel daunting because of the amount of legislation, health & safety considerations and overall commitment to the on-going maintenance and security of your investment.

Letting agent fees charged reflect the depth of knowledge, expertise and up to date training required to keep on top of a constantly changing property landscape. When considering the cost of employing an agent you should always be aware of the cost of NOT employing one should things start to go wrong. There are three principal points to consider: 1. Being a ‘D-I-Y’ landlord means having the time and patience needed to care for your property and its tenants. Would you be able to deal with any issue at a moment’s notice, to the satisfaction of all concerned? 2. Do you have the manual and organisational skills to maintain the property to the required standard, or would you need to employ someone to do this for you? 3. Are you confident about handling all the legalities? Changes to Landlord and Tenant law are frequent and often complicated. Again, this demands time, research, a thorough understanding and great attention to detail. • Belvoir Christchurch offer a range of services to suit the particular circumstances of a landlord client. They will provide a professional assessment of the cause and or liability for repair and fix the problem on your behalf. • All landlords have a legal obligation under the Landlord and Tenant Act 1985 to ensure that their property is safe and that repairs are carried out to the correct standard, so quality of workmanship is essential. A professional agent will ensure compliance with these regulations. • If problems arise during a tenancy – for example slow or non-payment of rent – Belvoir will pursue this on a landlord’s behalf and take appropriate steps to manage the issue. New flag unfurled at Christchurch splashpark A new flag is flying over Christchurch splashpark courtesy of a sixyear-old student from St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School. Bethany Westlake was the winner of a competition organised by Christchurch Borough Council to find a new flag to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the opening of the facility at Christchurch Quay. Primary school pupils in Christchurch were asked to produce a design for a flag along the theme of ‘having fun at Christchurch Quay’. More than 100 entries were received with Bethany’s design chosen as the winner.
Becky Beaumont, Community & Recreation Officer at Christchurch Council, said: “Bethany’s design really stood out, firstly because it was bright and colourful and secondly because it really answered the design brief.” Bethany’s design was made up into a flag and Bethany joined the Mayor of Christchurch, Cllr Frederick Neale, to raise it over the splashpark. Bethany was presented with a goody bag of sporting prizes including swimming vouchers for Two Riversmeet Leisure Centre and other items including some donated by Waitrose.

Dogs and cats in Somerford benefit from free services Almost 70 dogs and cats in Somerford, Christchurch benefited from free services provided by the RSPCA, Bournemouth Cats Protection, Christchurch & East Dorset Councils and Sovereign Housing. The services, which included micro-chipping, neutering, worm and flea treatments, were carried out by experts at a Dog and Cat Action Day held at Somerford ARC in Southey Road. Julie Burden, Clinic Manager at the RSPCA Clinic in Richmond Park Road, said: “We’ve helped to fund this event to support the local community with the neutering of their pets. We find that animal rescue centres for cats and dogs are full with unwanted animals due to overbreeding. Neutering obviously helps prevent this but there are many other health benefits to neutering for both male and female animals.” Michelle Jones, Animal Welfare Officer at Christchurch and East Dorset Councils, said: “We are offering free micro-chipping now because
by April next year all dogs will need to be microchipped by law and it will be an offence not to have a dog microchipped with the details of the microchip kept updated with the owner’s name and address. Whilst is still currently law that all dogs have to wear an identity disc with the owner’s name and address inscribed on it, microchipping is a valuable asset in getting stray dogs quickly and safely back to their owners.” Staff from Priory Vets Group carried out treatments of the cats which Bournemouth Cats Protection funded while the RSPCA vets helped with treatments for the dogs. Julie Rush from Sovereign Housing, who jointly hosted this event along with Michelle Jones, said: “This has been a very successful event. All of the partners involved identified that there was a need to help educate the public in the welfare needs of their animals and I am sure that is what we’ve achieved today.”

Christchurch marks 800th anniversary of Magna Carta Christchurch Culture and Learning Arena (C.A.L), whose activities focus on the heritage of the ancient borough of Christchurch, have commemorated the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta thanks to a grant of £7,388 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). King John was a frequent visitor to Christchurch Priory and the celebrations included a reenactment of one of his visits. A fanfare, by Twynham School Trumpeters, announced the arrival of ‘King John and his Entourage’ at Christchurch Priory to deliver an Inheritance Charter – re-enacted by Bournemouth Shakespeare Players. A peal of bells then announced the King’s approach to the Constable’s House, in the proximity of which he stayed during each of his ten visits to Christchurch. The Mayor of Christchurch, Cllr Frederick Neale, unveiled a plaque to commemorate the visits and the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta (courtesy of English Heritage) in the presence of representatives of the Borough Council and exMayors. After banqueting on the Bowling Green, (courtesy of the Kings Arms Hotel), the Town Crier led the King and the Royal Entourage to the Saxon Cross, where Christchurch Junior School provided entertainment in music and dance before his departure.
A display of vestments and regalia was held in the Mayor’s Parlour while a Heritage Marquee in Saxon Square housed the Magna Carta Census Scrolls which visitors were encouraged to sign as a reaffirmation of the benefits of the Charter. Christchurch History Society and other local historians were on hand to provide information and a heritage trail was led by historian Michael Andrews around the ancient Plantagenet boundary. In the week prior to this event the Hayloft Gallery in Wick Lane offered free workshops in the ancient crafts of calligraphy, spinning and weaving, medieval bag making and the Bayeux tapestry stitch and preparations will begin for Christchurch’s own Magna Carta Tapestry. Christchurch Priory hosted a week-long Art Exhibition by its local schools entitled ‘800 years of Cultural Heritage’ and offered a number of musical events throughout the week beginning June 15, including two Schools Concerts, an Organ Recital, Choral Evensong and a concert by Bournemouth Symphony Chorus. In addition to the HLF grant, which contributed to their specifically designated activities in the event, Christchurch Council provided £500 of funding.

Talking about Wildlife...
The Magic of Butterflies Butterflies are one of the most idolised insects in Britain. Their beautiful colourings add to the landscape and bring a smile to those who catch sight of them. The ideal habitat of a butterfly is dependent on the time of year and the species. Some species thrive in lowland forests, whilst others prefer wetlands, mountains or grasslands. Not all butterflies live in one single habitat, however. Despite the decline of butterflies in the last few decades, Dorset remains a stronghold, with summer the best time to enjoy the colour of the forty-odd resident species around the county. Britain’s most widespread blue butterfly, the Common Blue, is visible all summer long, breeding twice a summer in the South. Dorset’s rich landscape of grasslands, heaths and meadows is ideal for supporting this easily recognisable butterfly. The large majority of butterflies only survive for two to four weeks, but those who survive through winter - monarch butterflies and mourning cloaks - can live up to 9 months. This means they have to pass on their genes quickly. Butterflies identify a suitable mate by the markings on their wings; each species has a unique marking. Certain species also have specific flight patterns, which they use
in courtship. Both the male and female will assess the performance of their potential mate and will judge whether or not they are a suitable companion. Butterflies taste with their feet and only consume liquids. Their diets generally consist of nectar and mud puddles, which contain important nutrients. This summer, some of the best Dorset Wildlife Trust reserves to see butterflies are: Fontmell Down nature reserve, Powerstock Common, Portland quarries nature reserves, Haydon Hill and Kingcombe Meadows Nature Reserve. 900 people bring antiques to ‘Flog It’ at Highcliffe Castle Around 900 people came to Highcliffe Castle to get their antiques valued by the BBC One antiques programme ‘Flog It’ in the hope of going away with a fortune. Presenter Paul Martin was on hand along with a number of antique experts to give the expectant owners the news about whether they had a valuable property in their possession. ‘Flog It’, the major BBC antiques show, is now on its fourteenth series and regularly achieves an audience of over two million viewers in its weekday afternoon slot. The ‘Flog It’ team were recording enough material for five programmes. The people chosen to take their items forward to auction were then filmed by the team at a valuation day at Cottees Auctions, The Market, East Street, Wareham, Dorset, BH20 4NR on Tuesday 7 July.
Paul Tucker, Executive Producer of Flog It, said: “Highcliffe Castle has been a fantastic backdrop for Flog It with the Castle itself and the beautiful grounds. Everybody has had a great day – the crew and everyone who took the time and trouble to bring their objects along for us to see. We’ve had everything from a 1950s Hornby railway set to Royal Worcester porcelain and we should be able to make some interesting programmes out of what we’ve found.”

Yes there is. You can protect your share of the deposit by making a Declaration of Trust with your boyfriend when you purchase. This document can set out your intentions with regards to the proceeds of sale.

How will my Executors know what assets are in my estate on my death? I am a very private person and I do not wish them to have this information during my lifetime. The simplest thing is to keep a list of all your assets somewhere at your home and to advise your Executors where this list can be found in the event of your death. It is important that if you do this you keep the list up to date. It is best if, rather than redoing the list each time you change investments, you keep it up to date on a rolling basis.
Your Solicitor will advise that you should hold the ‘equity’ in the property—being the money that you have left in the property after paying off the mortgage and meeting the costs of the sale—as Tenants in Common. This means that you still own the property jointly but that you have two separate shares in the equity in the property. For example, the Declaration of Trust could state that you each receive back your respective deposit contributions and if you were to be paying the outgoings and the mortgage equally, you could share any uplift in the value of the property equally. Consideration should also be given as to what should happen in the event of the property going down in price and you being in negative equity at the point of the sale. Ideally you should discuss this with your boyfriend at the earliest opportunity and reach an agreement. If you cannot agree as what you should do about the financial aspects of the purchase, you should give some thought as to whether the joint purchase is actually a good idea at all!
This will allow your Executors to see quickly what investments you owned, when you sold or encashed them and how you reinvested the proceeds. That way if your Executors find papers relating to an investment you do not appear to have at your death they can find out what happened to it without having to investigate further.

Carefully slice the aubergine and courgettes and layer them into a baking dish. Pour the tomatoes into a jug and add the basil and garlic clove (you can pop this in whole). Use a hand blender and whizz up until smooth. INGREDIENTS
1 medium/large aubergine 2 courgettes Cupful cheddar cheese Handful of fresh basil 1 clove of garlic Tin of chopped tomatoes Enough pasta for those around the table!
Pour the sauce over the veggies and add the grated cheese to the top. Bake until golden in the oven (fan 190°c/ 215°c) and serve on a little bed of pasta.

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van A huge advantage of having a campervan is the ease of just deciding to “go out” whatever the time of day, or night, and get some space, relax and enjoy our wonderful English countryside. The weather has been so much better recently and we have had some beautiful evenings, so what better excuse than to put milk in the fridge, coffee in the cupboard and let Nellie take us for a drive! We did exactly that last week. Hayden had gone to scouts, leaving Stephen and I some time on our own for a couple of hours. We all live such busy lives and I just needed a walk to clear away the hustle and bustle of the day. Holt Heath is owned by the National Trust and belongs to the Kingston Lacy Estate. Situated 4 miles north east of Wimborne Minster, it is quite a magnificent expanse of dry and wet heathland, bog and ancient woodland with views all the way to the Isle of Wight.

It was a gorgeous evening as we parked a very contented Nellie in a small parking bay. Stephen and I went for a slow, leisurely walk along the ‘path’. Livestock have actually been reintroduced to this 400 hectares of heathland. Their grazing is helping to reduce the shrubs and also control the coarser grasses which allows rare plants and species to thrive and flourish. While we were there we saw cattle, ‘wild’ horses and ponies….as well as several cyclists. There is a circular route with the largest walk being 6 miles long and taking up to 3 hours. Oh what a shame, we only had 2 hours before we had to pick Hayden up…or was that a good excuse? The smaller route is just 3 miles long. It is also possible, as Stephen and I can attest, to take an even shorter route if you are not feeling quite so energetic. I really must be getting old! To be honest on a good day, picnic and a

bottle of water in hand, this would be a perfect spot to get away from it all and really enjoy the peace and quiet while observing nature at its best. Ironically once we were back in Nellie doing just that, enjoying the serene ambience with a cuppa from the whistling kettle, a driver came along and parked right in front of us with thumping music blasting out of the car! I couldn’t believe it. I waited a while thinking whoever it was wouldn’t stay long. All my hopes of a tranquil couple of hours were fearfully fading away. It was obvious after ten minutes that this person was staying right there. I got out of the van and carefully approached the car. We do live in a democracy, so I did hold back what I really wanted to say (us English are very good at that!), and quietly asked if the music could be turned down, as we could only hear the rather loud beating drums. Don’t you just love it. The lady was very good and the music was turned down. A short while later the car drove off. Phew! Nellie, who had gotten rather tense with all of this,

breathed a sigh of relief. My serenity was back and I was once again able to take in the silence and calmness that I was seeking. It must be all the fishing I did with Dad when I was younger. All those blissful lazy days with nothing to worry about, no cares in the world and surrounded by chirpy singing birds, butterflies, family picnics, the gentle plop of the float landing in the water. Those were the days! Back to present times. This area of heathland really is gorgeous. If you are looking for tranquillity and nature, not too far off the beaten track, then I highly recommend you take a drive and witness the countryside in its glory. If you are looking for a disco, this is not the place to be … or maybe it is, if a car parks in front of you! Where will Nellie go next…?

The inaugural Highcliffe Revival Food Festival – Community News
bringing music, food & happiness to the high street Saturday 16th May 2015 had the village of Highcliffe celebrating its first food festival in high style. With events for all the family including Flash Mobs, cake competitions, icecream, cakes, hog roasts, bouncy castles, beer, a town crier and locally run businesses showing their wares, as well as those from further afield in Hampshire and the rest of Dorset, the event was deemed an amazing success judging by the amount of positive feedback received both verbally and via websites like Streetlife. Events included demonstrations by chef and author Valentine Warner as well as many leading local chefs including James Golding from The Pig group as well as Luke Matthews from Chewton Glen. There were rides for the children as well as a surf simulator for the teenagers. The road being closed added to the ambiance and highlighted how personable Highcliffe could become when parts of the street are pedestrianized. The Revival committee said “It was a sheer delight to see so many young families enjoying themselves, walking through the street, eating, and sitting in the sun. The entire event is about the rejuvenation of Highcliffe, to encourage people who live in Highcliffe to come to the high street and see what the high street has to offer in terms of delis, butchers and restaurants. We hope that, in turn, new businesses will come to the area having seen how lovely Highcliffe can be. Mark Sullivan, the owner of the newly set up Fire & Ice Coffee bar said he had an unbelievably busy day, especially as he has now added icecream to his menu. Mark said, “Our coffee bar is normally
busy but this was amazing. I was particularly pleased that the entertainment was received so well as that lay on my head should anything have gone awry!” One of the attendees of the event said “What a wonderful, wonderful day, huge well done to the organisers. Brilliant to see so much activity and so many people in Highcliffe. The chefs presentations were excellent. We discovered top class cafes and shops on our doorstep that we will now use regularly and recommend. The singers and musicians were terrific, so much talent. As a community we need to get involved and showcase Highcliffe more.” The committee said, “We could not have been more delighted with the attendance at the event and would also like to thank those companies who made the commitment to sponsor us.” They made a huge difference and enabled us to pull together the show we put on. Start them young! Would you like to see your youngsters spending more time outdoors and get them eating healthy foods too? Then what better idea than to involve the kids in growing their own?
I was an incredibly picky eater as a child. I remember wanting to like tomatoes because they were such a lovely bright colour but still I wouldn’t eat them! It was only after my mother started growing them at home that I finally plucked one straight from the plant and popped it, warm from the sun, into my mouth - delicious! Jobs for July:Make last sowings of carrots and French beans. Keep harvesting those beans, peas and courgettes. Sow Spring cabbage. Lift onions (and garlic if it’s still in) and dry for storing over the winter. Plait and hang (or store in a string bag). Remember tomatoes.

As crops go over use the free space for quick growing salad leaves or radishes. Peg down some of the runners from your strawberries to root into new plants. Remove the remainder.
While we’d all love a string of willing, young, helpers on the vegetable plot you do have to be realistic. Children can have short attention spans, will only want to do the jobs that appeal to them, and usually expect quick results. Us adults on the other hand tend to be stuck in our ways, place great importance in doing things slowly and methodically and don’t usually take well to sudden changes of plan! So how can you encourage your little ones, without boring them out of the garden, or having them dig up your row of prize leeks? If it is at all possible give children a space that is completely their own on the plot. Get hold of some good quality child size tools and encourage their attempts even if it isn’t quite what you’d have done - if digging holes and making mud pies is more in their line than neat rows of seedlings perhaps they could create a wildlife area? A shallow dish sunk into the ground can be used by birds, frogs, toads and hedgehogs, and a log pile will be home to all sorts of insects plus providing a possible hedgehog home. Giant sunflowers are great fun, especially if you have a growing competition, and wild flower seeds can just be scattered and will, in time, encourage useful insects and birds natural pest control! Keen young growers can browse seed
packets or catalogues to see what takes their fancy. Quick growing crops are a good suggestion - radishes and salad leaves pop up in no time at all and should give them almost instant satisfaction! Sweet young carrots are likely to tempt even picky eaters, as are those lovely little cherry tomatoes. Popping peas out of their pods is very appealing and how about growing their own hideaway in the form of a lush green wigwam of peas or beans? They may not be keen on eating greens, but there is certainly a much better chance that they’ll be tempted to try something they’ve grown themselves. Fruit, such as strawberries and raspberries is usually popular, and if you haven’t got any of your own planted yet you can always get them enthusiastic by having an afternoon out at the pick your own farm. Ready grown plug plants can be good for helping them to set up an ‘instant’ plot - take a trip out to the garden centre to see what is on offer. If you already have seedlings started, then they could have the choice of some for their own plot (and you can see whose grows best!). Finally, don’t forget ‘indoor’ growing activities too clean out the bottom half of a boiled egg and draw a face on it. Fill it with cotton wool soaked in water and sprinkle on some cress seeds - in just a few days the egg man will be growing hair and not only can they cut his hair but they can eat it too!

Both searching for the energy For the motivation we cannot find. A poet can no more summon imagination Than a sailor can command wind. About this month’s poet, Tom: “I was born in Manchester in 1942. Dad was a prisoner of war at the time. He returned home ill, so he and mum had a hard time. I worked for an international meat company for most of my life. My wife and I lived near the Ribble Valley in Lancashire. We spent a lot of time walking in the Lake Distrct and the Yorkshire Dales, and my love of the countryside started me writing poetry to describe its sylvan beauty in verse as many other poets have. In 1999 Mavis and I came on holiday to Christchurch, and were so thrilled with Dorset the warmth of the people and the light from the sea that we moved here then to live in Mudeford. I have written over 400 poems and several have been published. The reason that I write poems I think that I can explain in this verse... The poem I have just composed in my head Describing both passion and torment. May never win a prize whenever it is read But how it fascinates the moment.”

CONSUMER CHAMPION Credit Cards By James Walker, www.resolver.co.uk One piece of consumer credit that you are overwhelmingly likely to have in your life is a credit card. But are you managing it properly, and are you getting the best from any credit cards you have?
Tempting introductory teaser interest rates Interest rates on some cards can seem low at first – but check the small print and you could find that the interest rate goes up dramatically after a certain period.
I’ve put together a few thoughts on how best to approach using a credit card – as well as a little bit about what to do when things go wrong.
Credit card protection If you use your credit card to buy goods or services worth more than £100 and up to £30,000, you’re covered by ‘section 75’ of the Consumer Credit Act. This could be anything from a weekend break in a hotel to a new car.
Do you need a credit card? The short answer to this is ‘probably’. There are plenty of occasions when you’ll find a credit card extremely useful. If you’re staying at a hotel or renting a car, for instance, they often ‘block out’ part of your credit card as a virtual deposit in case of damage or non-payment. Other useful aspects of a credit card include extra protection from fraud or refund policies, and sometimes freebie extras such as cashback rewards. What are the downsides? You need to be disciplined. If you don’t meet repayments interest can start to quickly add up, especially on higher-rate cards. Ideally, you need to make sure you pay off the entire balance every month. Credit checks You’ll undergo a credit assessment when you apply for a card. What’s more, any late-payment charges will affect your credit rating, which will make it harder for you to get credit in other ways – including a mortgage. Never use a credit card to take out cash. You’ll almost always be charged a fee to withdraw cash via an ATM using your credit card – as much as £5 a time – as well as interest on the money you withdraw.
What it means is that if there’s an issue with the items you’ve purchased, the credit card company has equal responsibility with the seller. This is particularly useful if the company you’ve bought something from goes bust, as you might be able to claim a refund form your credit card provider. If you’ve a problem with goods or services, it’s best to try and resolve this with the retailer in the first instance – and you can do this by raising a case free via resolver.co.uk Reclaiming unfair credit card charges You might be able to claim charges that you consider to be unfair, even if they’re because of missed or late payments – especially if you’re dealing with lots of debt. According to the Governments’ Money Advice Service: “The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has now taken over from the OFT as regulator for the consumer credit industry. However, if you are in financial hardship and have incurred charges – or were previously in debt and incurred regular charges at the higher rates – you may still be able to reclaim some or even all of them.”

Past Chairman of East Dorset presents cheques to his chosen charities Fundraising during his year in office as Chairman of East Dorset District Council, Cllr Robin Cook raised a total of £5847. £5200 of this has gone to his chosen charities, the Alzheimer’s Society and Friends of Victoria Hospital, Wimborne. He has now presented each of the charities with a cheque for £2600. In addition £647 was donated to the Bournemouth University Dementia Institute as a contribution to their Dementia Orchestra project. Cllr Cook said: “I am pleased that I was able to raise this money to help these great causes, and also wanted to recognise the help that Bournemouth University gave us towards raising this total. The leaves, covered in their unmistakable Geranium ‘fuzz’, may have a slightly odd smell about them but the burst of colour emitted from the flowers that shoot forth from these little plants more than make up for its shortcomings. These are pretty tough plants and usually grow through any off the odd problems they may get such as late summer mildew or vine weevil larvae. Make sure they are planted in good sunlight and protect from cold. Geraniums are happy both as indoor or outdoor plants and as they root easily from cuttings you can keep a good supply of plants on the go!

Peugeot must have sprinkled fairy dust over its designers, because there are now some attractive motors in its automotive stable, including the 308.
The head-up instrument layout means that information can be clearly read easily and safely, looking over rather than through the wheel.
It’s no secret that the French firm hasn’t always produced beautiful motors – yet, conversely, Peugeot has created some of the most popular cars on the road.
The Peugeot also has a compact steering wheel and newly developed electric power steering, resulting in a responsive and controlled driving experience. My 1.6, 156bhp petrol powered ‘Feline’ model certainly impressed me with its ability to stick to the road and hug bends - even when pushed hard.
To bring more of a balance to the automaker’s looks department, the brand is moving up-market. It’s an initiative started several years ago and seen most recently with the 208 and 2008. The initial design brief of the New 308 had the highest levels of quality at its heart and that has been more than noticed already. Crowned 2014 European Car of the Year, at the Geneva Motor Show, the suave Peugeot offers a touch of technology, comfort and practicality. The new 308 is the fourth Peugeot model to be distinguished by the ‘Car of the Year’ accolade; it comes after the 307 (2002), 405 (1988) and 504 (1969). The appearance of the Pug is more akin to the latest Mercedes Benz A-Class than anything else. The front of the car is dominated by a ‘floating’ front grille and by a strong lighting signature. Slim full-LED headlamps glitter like diamonds and the striking illumination continues at the rear, with the three Peugeot lion ‘claws’ drawn by piercing red LED lamps. Inside, the 308 includes a touch-screen panel on the dashboard for added indulgence. It also has a practical purpose; it brings together many of the infotainment controls in one place, for ease of use and to create a contemporary and uncluttered cabin. Everything is arranged for an experience that is intuitive and relaxing so that you can focus entirely on the road ahead.
The car is stuffed to the brim with safety packages too. As well as multiple airbags it has an ‘Emergency Collision Alert System’, which gives out an audible warning should you get too close to the backside of someone else – or if you’ve just not braked in time. The 308 is also furnished with an ‘Emergency Collision Braking System’. This is a clever bit of gadgetry where, in the event of a possible crash, automatic braking is triggered to prevent the impact or reduce the consequences. What’s more, the five door car offers great fuel economy, without compromising too much on space. There’s plenty of room for luggage and shopping, as well as for you and your front seat passenger. Rear-seat travellers don’t have quite so much legroom, but headroom is fine and rest of the car is cosseting enough to provide a soothing ride. The new 308 is seriously worth considering if you’re after a medium sized family motor. The fact that the model will also be manufactured and sold in China indicates just how much belief there is in this car.
