Happy New Year Christchurch, Burton, Mudeford and Friars Cliff! Well we had a fantastic Christmas with my family up in Hull. There is nothing like 22 northern family members getting together. We thoroughly enjoyed it. I didn’t quite get the time off as I wanted and spent quite a lot of it in the kitchen! No rest for the wicked I realised, smiling… Hayden was thrilled with all his presents. On Christmas Eve I said in a rather hopeful way, “8am tomorrow Hayden”, to which he replied “Ok Mummy.” To my astonishment he woke up at 7.49am and whispered “It’s Christmas Day Mummy!” I replied “Oh Yes!” and then Hayden got back into his airbed on the floor… I was speechless. A few minutes later at 7.54 he whispered “Just 6 minutes to go Mummy!” I smiled. Then at 7.58 he suggested, “If we go downstairs now Mummy it will be 8am by the time we get there.” This really touched me. We are very lucky. It is back to some normality now after our New Year’s celebrations. Did you make any New Year’s Resolutions? I have made some and I think the key is to plan them out and set small goals, one at a time. That way I think I can achieve them. Good luck with yours! A Lost Treasure of Christchurch... The demolition of Jumpers House in 1955 marked the end of the story of a building that shaped the contours in history and landscape of a neglected part of Christchurch. It was a rather fine house surrounded by lawns situated between what is now Cedar and Chestnut Avenues, with Stourvale Avenue following the route of the drive, (the low part of the Crooked Beam restaurant was the gatehouse). N o t m u ch i s k no wn abo u t i t s beginnings but surviving photographs show Jumpers House to have been a medieval building with a vaulted c e l l a r , a n d i t m ay h a v e b e e n interchangeable with Grove Farm as being the main residence of the landowner owing to the rise of the seaside resort of Bournemouth. The earliest reference to Jumpers House can be found in a will of a Mary Thornhurst, dated 1743, who leaves the house and land to her son Thomas. Following this it seems to have passed to a Wiltshire family named Payne. Its heyday though seems to have been during the nineteenth century when it passed to Benjamin Bullock who died in 1824 and is buried in the Hary’s chantry of the Priory. On his death the property was inherited by his daughter, Jane West, who rented it out throughout her lifetime. Jane was married twice;

firstly to a John Gardner, (a surgeon) then to a James Fitzmaurice. Both men have roads named after them. It was in Jane’s lifetime that parts of the estate were sold off and built on to create the area that is now known as Jumpers. On Jane’s death in 1904 the house passed to various well-to-do people and continued to be occupied right through until it became a nursing home.
This is only a brief thumbnail sketch of a house that has a fascinating history. This includes scandal, a disputed will, and being hit by a German bomb in the Second World War. All this will be explored in future articles.

Homes for nesting birds As we enter the midst of winter, it’s time to clear out the nest boxes in our gardens. Nest boxes provide sites in which birds can roost and are particularly important during the breeding season. Some birds will begin t o fight o ver space as early as February. The nest boxes in your garden must be clean to protect birds from pests and disease. Unfortunately, old nests are infested with fleas, feather mites and parasites, which remain in nest boxes throughout the winter months. In order to clear your nest boxes of these parasites, remove the old nests and debris. Next, cover the nest box in boiling water. Allow the house to dry completely before closing the lid. Do not use chemicals or insecticides as these can be harmful to birds. As you clean your nest box, you may come across unhatched eggs. It is legal to remove these from the nest between August and January and they should be disposed of to leave the nest clean for the next breeding season. Before you return the nest box to its location, check for hazards such as

loose hinges, nails and splinters. You can fill the bottom of your clean nest box with wood shavings and birds may choose to roost there over winter, but there is no need to put anything inside. Do not inspect nest boxes when they are in use. Ensure your garden is equipped with the appropriate food, water and nesting material, which can include dog hair a n d t he co nt ent s o f y o u r o wn hairbrush! Happy bird watching! Weekly Social Cycle Rides from Highcliffe Castle Starting in the New Year, the Christchurch and East Dorset Partnership will be running weekly volunteer led adult rides from Highcliffe Castle as part of the Activate 1000 scheme. If you can ride a bike but haven’t ridden for a while or would like to try this enjoyable form of exercise then why not come along? Don’t worry if you don’t own a bike as there are bikes available to hire for only £4. The rides are free and last no more than an hour using quiet lanes, roads and off road cycle lanes. Each ride is led by a different volunteer and so the routes will vary but they will always finish with a sociable cuppa!
If you are good with people and can cycle and think you could help out on a few Monday mornings during the year then why not become a volunteer leader? The training is friendly and fun and includes a free lunch! Just contact the Rangers at Moors Valley to register your name and they will be in touch. The rides will start on Monday 14th January, meeting outside the café at Highcliffe Castle. Arrive at 9.45am for a 10am start. For more information contact the Ranger team on 01425 470721.

Father and son go green Dave New has been running his own window company for the last 18 years, but has recently found himself replacing broken down double glazing units more and more.
