The Anglo-Saxon defences of Christchurch Not a great deal is known about the Saxon defences of the Burh (Borough) of Christchurch, or Twynham as it was known, but a few facts can be gleaned from them. To start with, the construction of the wall its elf mus t be u n ders tood. Als o a documented mention of Christchurch exists which could, in the right light, shed further meaning. The walls at Christchurch probably date from the 10th century, but were instigated during the reign of King Alfred. They enclosed an area that covered 470 hides. A hide is a measure of land which covered roughly 120 acres so the length of the walls can be estimated at 610 metres in total. By comparison, this is far smaller than the more famous burh of Wareham at 1,993 metres, according to Ryan Lavelle, (Early Wessex Fortifications, published by Osprey Books). The wall started at what is now the crazy golf course on the quay, (a later medieval stone gate can still be found there). It extended through Druitt gardens, taking a sharp right just before Sopers Lane and cutting across the High street where M&S is before ending at the river. The rest of the area may have utilised the marshy floodplain of the Stour and Avon so a wall may not have been needed in these areas. The construction of the wall employed a double turf earthwork faced with stone, with maybe a wooden palisade at the top. The reason for this and other defensive structures is because Alfred was continuing his fight against the Vikings who had come so close to defeating him. The practical use of the walls can be demonstrated in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle account for the year 899, after Alfred had died and his son Edward had ascended the

throne. It reads ‘Then Aethelwold …seized the manor at Wimborne, and at Christchurch without the consent of the king and his councillors’. This not only shows that Christchurch was worth having, but that the substantial defences were unlikely to be taken by force. It also shows that Christchurch had a working harbour capable of supporting ocean going ships. All in all we can deduce from the walls, and from the frag mented documen ta ry evidence, that whilst Christchurch was not as important as its neighbouring burhs of Wareham or Southampton, it can hold its own in importance of what it can tell us about Anglo-Saxon life .

Woodlands Woodlands have always held a fascination for humans, and a visit to the woods refreshes the mind and lifts the spirit at any time of the year. British woodlands are wonderfully rich with wildlife; ranging from large mammals to the tiniest insects, and from bluebells to gigantic ancient trees, there are thousands of species to observe at all seasons. Native woodlands and what remains of ancient woodlands are the best habitats for biodiversity, and particularly important for many threatened species. Generally, areas with the best availability of light support the largest of variety of plant life, on which the animal kingdom depends to a great degree. Both native and non-native animals make the woods their primary home, and some woodland fauna such as dormice have all they need there; the canopy for shelter and hazelnuts for food (although dormice can also be found living in hedgerows, a sort of mini-woodland). Other species such as deer and many birds frequently venture into different habitats including heaths, grasslands and even our back gardens, sometimes moving from one habitat to another depending on their changing needs in different seasons. Woodland habitats are generally rich with insect life as well as nuts and seeds, and support a variety of birds from resident species like our mysterious owls, to seasonal migrants. Some are shy and elu si v e , b u t m an y w oo d l an d b i rd s including the tit and the finch families like human habitats as well, as our gardens can be similar to woodland edges or rides. Even more species will swell the garden population during harsh winters when food in the woods is scarce.

Dorset’s woods are well worth a visit at any time, but especially in early spring as the woodland flowers put on their show, taking advantage of the light before the trees are in leaf. Safer school parking campaign in Christchurch Christchurch Borough Council and Dorset Police have joined forces with schools throughout the Borough to raise awareness of safe parking regulations outside schools. The campaign aims to remind drivers dropping or picking up their children that it is not safe to do so within the area marked by the yellow zig zags. It also reminds drivers about the dangers of parking on pavements or too close to junctions. Andy Jones, Senior Neighbourhood Management Officer at Christchurch Council, added: “Most parents know how important the parking restrictions outside schools are, but there are still some who flout the rules perhaps because they’re running late or they don’t see any problem with stopping for a couple of seconds. Unfortunately those couple of seconds could cost a child’s life.” Louise Buxton, headteacher at St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, said: “We are working alongside Christchurch Council and the local police during this school parking campaign to try to address the issue of illegal parking. It is not just the lack of courtesy to our neighbours but the basic safety of our children that can be compromised by thoughtless parking. A parent would never forgive themself if something were to happen to a child." The campaign involves talking to drivers and handing out leaflets to remind them about the safety message.

Bands dedicate new concert to local charity Award-winning duo, Tinderbox, are hosting a concert on April 26th to benefit local charity, Amelia's Rainbow. The children's charity - based in Bournemouth, like Tinderbox - raises funds to create memorable activities and days out for children (and their families) suffering from terminal or life-limiting conditions. The concert, at the Regent Centre, Ch ris tchur ch, will a lso fea tu r e th e nationally-revered singer-songwriter Mike Silver, plus well-known local musician, Bob Burke. All the bands are donating their time for the cause. When the eponymous Amelia died in 2010, aged 8, Tinderbox wrote a song to commemora te h er, called 'Amelia 's Dancing'. "They decided they wanted to help the charity in a tangible way, hence this

concert. Local people working together for the good of the community, is at the heart of the work of Christchurch Community Partnership," said Lesley Cooke who is coordinating the event on behalf of presenters CCP and Coda Music Trust.

Father and son go green Dave New has been running his own window company for the last 18 years, but has recently found himself replacing broken down double glazing units more and more.
