What an amazing summer we have had! I had a call from a very caring resident asking me to remind us all to leave water out for the birds as they desperately need it. Good idea, let’s help them. The children are now off school for a few weeks so hopefully they are getting out and about and enjoying time with family and friends. Nellie would say that! Get out there and live life, she would exclaim. On that note the story this month is a tribute to her. We have had 5 fabulous years and unfortunate events have led to what you will read about. We do hope you have enjoyed her exploits each month. We look forward to welcoming Daichi, the Dashing Dude!

Bournemouth’s Hotel for Cancer Sufferers Celebrates 7th Anniversary Not-for-profit holiday retreat for cancer sufferers, The Grove Hotel, has celebrated its seventh-year anniversary with a special tea party attended by the Mayor of Bournemouth. Over the past seven years, The Grove Hotel has been providing a muchneeded holiday for people with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses, alongside their families and carers. Opened in 2011 and situated on the East Cliff, The Grove Hotel is run by the local charity Macmillan Caring Locally. Celebrating the anniversary, the party highlighted the hotel’s role in providing wonderful holidays for cancer sufferers from the local community and across the country. With first-class support, the hotel gives guests an opportunity to spend precious time together with their carers and loved ones. The day’s festivities started in the hotel’s restaurant with tea, sandwiches and freshly baked scones served to visitors. The Mayor of Bournemouth Cllr Derek Borthwick was also in attendance. He was given a tour around the award-winning establishment and was present to cut the birthday cake. The party continued in the garden, with a live ukulele band and a prize raffle to raise much-needed funds for the hotel. Cllr Derek Borthwick, the Mayor of Bournemouth, said: “It was a real pleasure to see first-hand The Grove Hotel’s award-winning facilities. The Grove is doing a splendid job for cancer sufferers, who can go there on holiday with the assurance that their often complex needs will be met. Happy birthday to The Grove and I hope they will be operating for many years to come.”
Brenden Howard, the General Manager of The Grove Hotel, said: “The Grove’s seventh birthday party was a great opportunity to reflect over what we have accomplished in the past seven years. It was also a great occasion to thank our amazing team, guests and friends. I would like to give a special thanks to the Mayor and everyone who joined the festivities.” The Grove Hotel is one of only a few hotels of its kind in the country and is specifically equipped to meet the needs of their special guests. A number of bedrooms have electric recliner beds and emergency cords; bathrooms and showers have stools and handrails, and there is full wheelchair access. There is also a nurse on emergency call 24 hours a day. The first class restaurant serves a superb range of dishes and their highlytrained Chefs can prepare special meals to meet any specific dietary requirements. Marine Wildlife needs a wave of support At Dorset Wildlife Trust we know summer is Marine Conservation Zones are established under the Marine and Coastal Access Act (2009) and are crucial to the protection of some of our most rare and threatened marine wildlife. Currently, there are 50 MCZs in the country, with more urgently needed to complete the network of Marine Protected Areas in England. As part of the current MCZ proposals, six out of the 41 proposed sites in the third and final tranche are in Dorset: Albert Field; Purbeck Coast; South of Portland; Southbourne Rough; Studland Bay and West of Wight-Barfleur. These cover a wide range of underwater landscapes and habitats, from deep, tideswept rocky cliffs to sheltered seagrass meadows. Wildlife found in or near these sites include: black bream, spiny seahorses and peacock’s tail seaweed. In 2013, three sites were designated as MCZ’s in Dorset: Chesil Beach & Stennis Ledges MCZ, South Dorset MCZ and Poole Rocks MCZ. Together, these areas represent an impressive and stunning range of submarine landscapes and habitats which are often less appreciated and more overlooked than their terrestrial counterparts.

However, the importance of not only the Dorset sites but all of those proposed to be included in the current tranche of MCZ, is huge. Due to the extent of the damage caused to our marine environments, time is now running out to reverse the significant losses already suffered, and increased protection is urgently needed. You can find out more about all 41 sites across England by visiting www. wildlifetrusts.org/mcz, and for more information about the proposal’s Dorset sites, please visit www.dorsetwildlifetrust. org.uk/mczs where you can also become a friend of the MCZ’s and get regular updates and information on the outcome of the public consultation for the third tranche. We’re also pleased to have recently re-opened the Fine Foundation Wild Seas Centre at Kimmeridge, next to one of the best rockpooling sites in Dorset. The centre has a new artificial rockpool, new information panels, and interactive virtual seabed, a new shop, and lots of events throughout the summer. What happens if you don’t have a Power of Attorney? Arranging a Power of Attorney before it’s too late is critical to avoiding heartache for friends and family later. None of us likes to think about a time in life when we’re no longer able to make our own decisions. Trudie’s Big Day Out As part of the NHS 70th anniversary celebrations, Trudie Spicer, a branch member of the East Dorset and Ringwood NHS Retirement Fellowship (NHSRF), won the Wessex Area NHSRF ballot to attend The Buckingham Palace Garden Party. On the big day Trudie travelled to London by train, accompanied by her grandson Andrew. Upon arrival in London Trudie was told that she would be taken by taxi to a surprise venue for lunch beforehand. Unbeknown to her, however, Trudie’s son in law, who worked for the owners of the Hotel, had arranged a wonderful reception at the Ritz for her! Trudie was met and treated just like a VIP, given a special goodie bag and after a lovely lunch she was taken by chauffeur driven Daimler to Buckingham Palace. Alas the Queen was not present but Trudie saw Prince Charles and Prince Edward. A fine finish to a wonderful day that Trudie will remember forever.

Why is a Lasting Power of Attorney so important? Surely my spouse and children can look after me if I lose capacity? When discussing Lasting Powers of Attorney with clients I am often asked why these are necessary. Many people believe that should they lose capacity later on in life their next of kin can automatically take over the management of their affairs without any documentation in place.
A simple way to avoid this is to put a Lasting Power of Attorney in place. This allows you to choose people that you trust to manage your affairs if you are no longer able to do so yourself. You can make sure that both your finances and your health are looked after by deciding to put both Lasting Powers of Attorney in place.
Unfortunately, this is not the case. Although your spouse has some legal rights over property you own jointly together they can be restricted with what they can do with that property. For example, if you have a home together which is held in joint names, it would require both signatures in order that the property could be sold. If one party has lost capacity and is unable to consent to this then considerable delays could be caused with the transaction. They will not have the ability to deal with any bank accounts etc in your sole name.

The Trust Deed would set out the amount each purchaser contributed to the purchase price; the respective share owned; the contributions to outgoings, costs, insurance, decoration etc.; contributions to mortgage payments and what would happen if one party refuses to pay; agreement on how to value the property on sale; rights of refusal on a resale i.e. one party does not wish to sell or moves out remaining on the title and finally how the property or sale proceeds are to be distributed between the parties.
For varied reasons, (often economic), many people are now purchasing or investing in property, with relatives or friends and not just partners. It is vitally important to discuss at the outset what you all want to get out of the purchase; how this is going to be funded between you; how long you plan to live together or invest and what happens if one of you wants to sell your share of the property in the future or if one party dies. In order to best protect each parties’ legal and beneficial interest in the property it is advisable to hold your interests as ‘Tenants in Common’ either in equal or unequal shares (depending upon the sums contributed by each party). It is also advisable to draw up a ‘Trust Deed’, which would specifically set out how your respective interests in the property are to be held; how said interests would subsequently be dealt with upon any relationship breakdown, re-sale or death of any party.

Other considerations are additional Stamp Duty Land Tax payable upon a purchase where one or more parties already owns a legal or equitable interest in another property either in the UK or abroad and potential Capital Gains Tax or Inheritance Tax implications where property is transferred between parents and children.

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Directories Camper Van Many of us have come to enjoy Nellie’s exploits over the years, 5 good years in fact. Playful in her mature fun-loving way, always ready to go somewhere new and have a go. She would laugh at herself with her long black skirts to cover up her rather large thighs and a silver grin that would bring a smile to everyone’s face. Family fun, excursions, exploring and seeing the bright side of life have been her passion. I did say the journey was interesting at the end of last month, so are you ready? Driving back from Wales… Well, we had literally just passed the “Welcome to England” sign, travelling at a mere 20 miles an hour when there was a sudden bang. We lurched forward. I yelled. We were hit again. The young girl in the car behind Nellie failed to stop, she just kept going. I yelled for a second time. Nellie was badly hit and I knew instantly she would not be repaired. The girl’s car was totally ruined, the engine would not start at all. After the police came to help, Nellie limped to the nearest service station and unfortunately on the back of a truck Nellie was taken to the “old van’s home”. It was very sad. If I say anymore we will all cry, and that is not ‘our Nellie’. No, Nellie is not one to give up easily and she has a Grandson in Japan who is coming over to replace her fun and frolics here on the South Coast. Nellie will be keeping a close eye on him of course because from what I hear ‘Daichi, The Dashing Dude’ as he is known (and for good reason), is a bit of a handful. Despite his Japanese upbringing, he has somewhat of an ‘Italian’ persona and likes the lady cars. Being the personality he is, he is having a ‘makeover’ (can you believe
Nellie with the Cerne Abbas Giant it?) before he arrives here in Dorset. Goodness knows how we will cope, but I am sure we will manage somehow. It was Nellie’s idea and you know what these stubborn older ladies can be like! When we tried to argue we just saw ‘the look’ from those headlights and we decided it was best to let her be right. We are all for an easy life. Daichi, which means ‘first grandson’ in Japanese, is taking his time (there is a lot of makeover going on) and will be with us in a couple of months. In the meantime we will take a look back at Nellie’s Golden Years… It all started in 2013. Stephen’s old car had finally given up and I had this idea to get a campervan to help Stephen not only carry all of out thousands of magazines each month, but also give us some family fun with a good excuse to get out and about. Having a young, very active boy of nine at the time, and being a somewhat ‘older Mum’, having the van meant we could all enjoy a day out. After all, Nellie’s whistling kettle satisfied my more relaxed way of life and the outdoor life let Hayden run around to his heart’s content. Stephen had the

29 best of both worlds. It got both of them off the computer too! As soon as we bought Nellie, she attracted attention. Five years ago there were less van’s like her on our English roads and the dark glass, with her roof up, her long black skirts and her silver smile seemed to draw people in. They were curious. That’s what gave me the idea to characterise her and write about where she took us. It was all a bit of fun and would hopefully make others smile. Her very first trip in June ’13 was to Cerne Abbas to see the naked Giant on the hill. Knowing Nellie now, some may see why that might be, she was always a bit cheeky! One of our favourite trips was to the Isle of Wight. Mum, Dad my sister, her husband and the three of us all went in convoy. Nellie was so excited she got on the earlier ferry and left my sister and brother-in law in ‘Lady J’ standing, waving, on the quay! We all met up again and had a fabulous week exploring the whole island. Fishing for the boys and Liz Earle’s Beauty Salon for us girls. We came out smelling better than the boys did, Nellie will tell you! Another great stay was had at Norden Farm near Corfe Castle. Fields, the wonderful sounds of our English birds, fishing again, fish and chips in Swanage, a picnic by the River at Wareham, what more can you want? Nellie took us to Cornwall last summer where Hayden competed in

Nellie ‘unpacked’ ready for the beach the Surf Life Saving Championships (I did say he was active didn’ t I?) where we got thoroughly rained on and had to buy a new awning. Camping at it’s best…? Following that was a wedding in Hull, so Nellie was packed with wellies, wetsuits and surf boards, next to wedding outfits, dainty shoes and a fascinator! All good fun and just shows how versatile Nellie really was. Ever ready, with a big silvery grin, for any occasion. If you had a favourite story please let us know. Phone, write or email. Ballard School Launches Diverse Range of 2018 Summer Camps Returning for 2018, Ballard School’s popular Summer Camps programme will cover a four-week period from Monday 23rd July to Friday 31st August. They will provide a unique experience, with an engaging array of sporting, crafts and performing arts activities. An excellent opportunity for children from all walks of life to spend their summer at Ballard School; they are open to all local and visiting children across different age groups. The Summer Camps will feature a variety of sports including Football, Netball, Hockey, Gymnastics, Volleyball, Fencing and Multi-Sports. As well as participating in team activities there is the chance for children to take part in Sailing and learn Cycling safety skills through Bikeability courses. A fun way to spend the holiday period, children can also take part in clubs, workshops and crafts from Junk Modelling to Jewellery Making, KNEX, Design & Make, Mindfulness, History, Nature Quest, Animation and Robotics. Furthermore, there will be opportunities for youngsters to show off their flare for performing arts with Dance, Music and Drama camps.

Peter Pan flies into Christchurch! At a time when it is being said that High Streets around the country are getting deserted, Christchurch certainly bucked the trend on Sunday 15 July. Christchurch High Street was teeming with teenagers and youngsters, patiently waiting with their parents outside the Regent to audition for Disney Peter Pan Jr.
The queue, numbering 244 youngsters with their parents, totalling 400 people in all, snaked down the High Street from the front of the Regent to beyond the Christchurch Library entrance. They were waiting for the chance to audition for plum roles in Disney Peter Pan Jr., which is being produced at the Regent by Jo Barrington and West End Star, Earl Carpenter and his Company, Ginger Boy Productions Limited from 11 – 15 December. Shunning rival attractions that afternoon that included the gorgeous weather, the Wimbledon Men’s Singles Final, the World Cup Final and the opening weekend of the critically acclaimed family film blockbuster, The Incredibles 2, the budding Peter Pans, Wendys and a few Captain Hooks, chose the chance of stardom in this major production. Auditions began at the Regent at 1.30pm on Sunday 15 July and did not finish until 8.40pm!
Director, Jacquelyn Ockwell, was overwhelmed with the response from such a multi-talented set of youngsters. “Being spoilt for choice does not even begin to describe the hard task that I and my fellow judges have been set in selecting our principals and chorus cast members. Each auditionee was asked to sing a song as part of their audition and 20% sang songs from Greatest Showman, 15% chose a song from Matilda and 10% sang a song from Peter Pan. For me it’s not what you sing but how you sing it but I was so impressed today, thank you all so very much.” Second round auditions for Disney Peter Pan Jr, for those lucky enough to have been selected, took place at the De La Salle Theatre at St Peter’s School on Sunday 22 July. Because of the overwhelming response, Disney Peter Pan Jr will now have three full casts for the show, instead of just two as was originally planned. For those who do not make it into one of the three casts, a special consolation performing arts workshop with Producer, Jo Barrington, will be arranged at the Regent at a future date and those concerned will be contacted shortly with full details.

You will nearly always get more flowers for longer if you can spend some time regularly ‘dead-heading’. That means removing faded flowers to stimulate the development of more flowers, and of new shoots on shrubs and roses.

Lymington Seafood Festival Returns Bigger & Better Saturday 11th August 11-8pm & Sunday 12th August 11-6pm This year’s Lymington Seafood Festival is gearing up for a weekend of gastronomic delights with over 90 local artisan producers, live music and some of the region’s top chefs in the demonstration kitchen. MINI PIZZAS
With these Mini Pizzas you really have the chance to make them your own. Cover them with tomato and cheese and then pick from any number of topping choices: Pineapple and ham, pepperoni or even chicken and sweetcorn. Alternatively create your own unique toppings.
Ingredients 450g strong white bread flour 2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 7g sachet fast-action yeast 350ml warm water 2 tsp. salt
Equipment: Large bowl Oven: 240C, Gas Mark 9, 220C Method: In a large bowl, mix together the yeast, flour and 2 teaspoons of salt. Once this is all mixed together, create a well in the middle. In a separate jug, mix together the oil and the water and then pour into the bowl. Then, work the liquid into the flour mix to create the dough. Leave the bowl to one side for 15 minutes. Create a well-floured surface and put flour on your hands then begin to knead the dough. Do this for about 2 minutes until it is soft and even. Put the dough back in the bowl and cover it with oiled cling film. Leave it once again to one side (preferably in a warm place). When the dough has risen to double its size, heat the oven and place a baking sheet on a high shelf. Then dust another sheet with flour before splitting the dough into 8. Roll 3 balls thinly into circles and put them on the floured sheet. Use a thin layer of sauce on top with some seasoning and cheese of your choice. Bake for 12 minutes until golden then add fresh toppings of your choice and use the rest of the dough to create more!
