Hello Christchurch, Highcliffe, Mudeford and Burton! What fantastic weather we have had. It is so good to be able to go out and about for walks easily. How many of you have had early barbecues also? That is a great excuse to get together with family and friends and chill out a bit. Love it! The only problem is the rain, we do need it, so do be a little bit more careful with the use of water. Get baking for a new event at Christchurch Food Festival! This year's Christchurch Food & Wine Festival is launching a new and exciting event with “The Great Christchurch Bake Day and Fête”. It promises to be a great family fun day on the Quomps at Christchurch Quay and takes place on Saturday 19 May from 10.00am. Taking its initiative from the very successful BBC television series “The Great British Bake Off” the day will be hosted by the 2011 series winner Jo Wheatley. Amateur and professional bakers are being invited to show off their culinary skills by entering the bake day competition. To learn how to participate pick up an entry form from the Captain’s Club Hotel, send an SAE to “Miss Ingredient”, 3 Creedy Drive, Christchurch, Dorset, BH23 1HU or d own load a form at h ttp :/ /m issingredient.co.uk/?page_id=2517. The finals in each category will be judged on the day (no live cooking involved!) and include chocolate cake (maximum 6” round for amateur bakers), meringues (six meringues for amateur bakers only), light fruitcake (maximum 8” diameter for amateur bakers), dark fruitcake (maximum 6” square for amateur bakers), fruit pie, cold savoury pie, fruit jam preserve and chutney. For children there will be two “6 decorated cup-cakes” competitions – one for under 12s and one for 12 to 16 yearolds. For professional bakers there will be a Dorset Apple Cake competition.

Finally there will be a “show stopper cake” which is a tiered iced celebration display cake which can be non-edible. Entries will be based on decoration. Jo Wheatley, along with “Miss Ingredient” and Mary Reader, Festival President, will be judging the competition and the winners will be announced in the exhibition marquee at 5.00pm. The event, co-sponsored by the Captain’s Club Hotel and Frettens Solicitors, will include a vintage tea room serving delicious snacks throughout the day, a “pop-up” Champagne Bar and Captain’s Club restaurant serving lunch and afternoon tea. There will be an opportunity to join a pre-ticketed private lunch or afternoon tea with Jo Wheatley. Other marquees on the Quomps will house a selection of artisan trade stalls with an array of offerings including breads, cheeses and cakes. There will also be “Frettens fete” arena with exciting and fun opportunities for the young – and young at heart. So get baking and come and join in the fun!

Talking about wildlife with
Heard the cuckoo yet? The sound of the cuckoo’s song is a traditional sign of spring, announcing the arrival of warmer weather and longer days. The cuckoo has a firm place in British folklore, and is a cherished summer visitor from sub-Saharan Africa, arriving in Britain in late April or early May. It can be seen throughout the country in open woodland areas, and is most abundant in the south. The cuckoo’s summer stay with us is rather brief, though, as the adults head back south in July and August, followed by the juveniles about a month later. The cuckoo sound of the male’s song is instantly recognisable, but in flight, this medium sized, blue and grey bird can be mistaken for kestrel and sparrowhawk. Male and female are rather similar in appearance and the juveniles are brown. Apart from its song, the cuckoo is probably best known for being a brood parasite, as the female lays a single egg to be incubated in the nest of its chosen host species; reed warbler, dunnock or meadow pipit. The youngster, not to be outdone by its mother in the art of deception, ejects its ‘siblings’ as soon as it has hatched, thus securing the foster parents’ full attention at feeding times. The

cuckoos feed mostly on insects; caterpillars, beetles and ants. Bright coloured, hairy caterpillars are on the top of their list, as their digestive system is well adapted to tolerate them. The cuckoo is currently a red list species of conservation concern, its numbers having been in steep decline for over two decades. The reasons for the decline are currently being investigated, but there are believed to be multiple factors, such as a reduction in prey species, especially caterpillars, changes in the cuckoos’ habitats here and in Africa, and even climate change.

A cut above the rest HAIRDRESSING talents a cut above the rest were showcased during an alternative show involving more than 80 students at The Arnewood in Hampshire. Hairdressing students aged 14 to 19 at the New Milton academy took part in The Alternative Hair Show using recycled materials su ch as mag azin es an d newspapers to create a unique hairstyle, make-up and complementing outfit. Each student had to bring their designs to life – including nails and makeup – within a £10 budget and show how to do this via a story board plan. Inspiration for their designs included characters such as Edward Scissorhands, Lady Gaga, Downton Abbey and Barbie, while the judging panel came from the competitors’ host schools, the local community and industry representatives as well as examination body VTCT.
NVQ manager, Jo Powell, said: “The show attracted more than 200 people and tickets sold out pretty quickly – so much so we could have probably doubled that. We wish we had a bigger venue!” The winning students were awarded trophies and hairdressing equipment. The competition that is staged annually as part of the students’ course but it also is raises funds for charity. More than £300 will this year be presented to the Changing Faces charity as a result.
The finished creations were then modelled by students in a glitzy catwalk show before an audience of p aren ts an d commu n ity guests. “We’ve known about the competition since October so have been able to plan for it and get everything ready we need to make,” said Megan Andrews, 15, “but on the day we only had a few hours to style he hair and pull all our designs together.”

Recipe: Rhubarb Crumble Puffs 5 Rhubarb sticks, cut into 3cm pieces 1 Tsp ground cinnamon 3 Tbsp plain flour, plus extra for dusting 5 Tbsp soft brown sugar 1/2 x 500g block puff pastry 3 Tbsp unsalted butter 50g Rolled oats 1. Pre-heat the oven to gas 6/200c/180c. 2. Line a baking sheet with baking paper. 3. Roll out the pastry on a floured surface to about 20x30cm, then cut into quarters and place on the sheet. 4. Rub together the remaining flour and butter until it resembles fine breadcrumbs then add the sugar and oats to make a rough crumble mixture. 5. Divide the rhubarb between the pastry quarters, leaving a 1cm rim. 6. Sprinkle the oat mixture over, then fold and pinch each corner to keep the filling in. Bake for 20-25 mins and serve warm.

Strange premonitions about The Titanic We’re already being reminded of the sinking of The Titanic, but April sees the actual anniversary day – 15th April, 1912 at 2.20 hrs – when this historic tragedy occurred. There are so many articles, films, documentaries, memorabilia, etc., but one weird fact may well be ignored: that there were an astonishing number of premonitions by many people - all convinced, as The Titanic set sail from Southampton, that the trip would end in disaster. One passenger, an American Colonel Archibald Gracie, must have prayed as he realised his danger: and his wife, in bed in New York, woke up suddenly hearing a voice say ‘On your knees and pray.’ She got out of bed, opened a prayer book and her eyes fell on the words, ‘For those in peril on the sea.’ She realised that her husband was in danger and lay awake, convinced that something terrible was happening. A happier premonition was of a New York woman who had a nightmare in which she saw her mother in a crowded boat in the middle of the ocean. Her husband comforted her by saying that this was ridiculous, as her mother was safe in London. The next day, she heard of this disaster, and read that one of the survivors was indeed her mother. Later, the mother confirmed that she was in a perilously swaying lifeboat just at the time her daughter had the nightmare. She was making a surprise visit to see her.

Many similar stories could be told – but two of the weirdest must be told here. The first concerns an American, Morgan Robertson, a sailor-turned-writer of sea stories. He liked to get into a writing mood by having his study laid out like a ship’s cabin. In 1898 – fourteen years before the Titanic disaster, he was in this study, drifting into a kind of writingtrance, and he ‘saw’ a huge ship looming into his vision. It was a gigantic liner, and as it came into view he saw its name, THE TITAN, and the word ‘unsinkable’ came into his mind. Seeing it more clearly, he realised that there were only twenty-four lifeboats… and just ahead, looming in the fog, he saw a deadly iceberg… Strange details came to him: spacious cabins… decks like promenades… unsinkable… indestructible.. seventyfive thousand tons… nearly 3000 humans in danger… – In fact, with uncanny precision, he wrote and published his book The Wreck of the Titan in 1898, virtually foretelling the real event by more than a decade. Even before this, an even stranger premonition occurred. This time, in the

Find us online at www.thechristchurchdirectory.co.uk 1880s, a well-known London writer, William Stead, wrote an imaginative story in the Pall Mall Gazette about a liner sinking in the Atlantic with far too few life-boats. Stead was passionately concerned with all sorts of campaigns to help and save others. He was an editor and a lecturer, and one of his concerns was with safety at sea. In 1910 he gave a lecture in London in which he imagined himself desperately floundering in the sea and calling for help. Chillingly, he visited a famous psychic, who told him he should beware of water and stay away from the sea. Later, that same psychic, Count Louis Hamon, wrote to him to specify that ‘travel would be dangerous in the

month of April, 1912.’ Stead even consulted another psychic, W. de Kerlor, who told him – to his great surprise – that he would go to America.. adding ‘I can only see half the ship… You can guess the rest… Yes, William Stead did buy a ticket for the maiden voyage of The Titanic.
