Hot Foot It To Bonfire Night Firewalk Wessex Cancer Trust needs daredevils to hot foot it to Sandbanks Beach in Poole this Bonfire Night and walk over hot coals to raise money for local families living with cancer. After a full safety briefing, walkers will be led over ten metres of coals heated to 1200°F (648°C) by certified instructors UK Firewalk. Bournemouth-based drumming band, Samba Panache, will heat up the atmosphere for the evening, and in a fitting finale participants will have the opportunity to watch fireworks light up the night sky across Poole Bay after their walk. Maria Tidy, Wessex Cancer Trust’s community engagement manager, said: “This is an adrenaline-fuelled event which requires an open mind and the determination to take up the challenge. All the money raised will go directly to providing free and local support to anyone living with cancer, so we wouldn’t want anyone to get cold feet!
If you think you’re a good match for this we’d love to hear from you.” Registration is £20 per person, or £35 for a pair, with a sponsorship goal of £80. Talking about Wildlife...
Return of the birds Migration is a form of adaptation, vital to survival, as the changing seasons vary climate. As autumn approaches, we will start to see migrant birds returning to the UK, completing a journey of thousands of miles. What may look like chaos to us as we witness flocks of birds pass above, is actually part of a planned and calculated flight, unique to a species. Some will take a direct route, whereas others may prefer to follow a costal course. In the South of the UK, we are lucky to be winter hosts to members of the thrush family such as fieldfares and redwings; two migrant birds that resemble eachother. Fieldfares are large and yellowbreasted, whereas Redwings can be identified by distinctive bursts of orangey-red under its wings. Returning to nest in Iceland and Scandinavia around the end of March, these birds take this time to indulge in our berry-laden hedgerows, parks and woodlands. Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Kingcombe Meadow Nature Reserve offers an excellent opportunity to see these migrating birds with its abundance of thick hedgerows. Fieldfares are sociable birds and can be seen in flocks of over 200. Increasing numbers of migrating birds, such as the fieldfares and redwings, are being spotted in our gardens. A combination of freezing conditions and the dramatic decrease of insect populations forces

these birds to take refuge, so don’t forget to top up your bird feeders or provide mealworms, cheese and suet to help keep feathered visitors energised this autumn and winter. Also look out for geese and wading birds will arrive in September and October in their hundreds and thousands. Dark-bellied brent geese flock to southern shores in early October. The Chesil Beach Centre, over looking the Fleet Lagoon, is a great place to see these birds in action. Holes Bay, Poole Harbour is the estuary (tidal mouth) of serval rivers and is therefore another perfect place to look out for migrating birds and some fantastic flocks can be seen late in the afternoon there. Coastal areas make excellent vantage points for a keen bird watcher, or even if you’re just starting out. Tips for watching migrating birds: 1. Check tide times and take precautions with appropriate clothing. 2. Time your visits: geese are mostly likely to be seen at sunrise and sunset. 3. Keep a record of birds arriving and departing over the season. 4. Don’t forget to pack your binoculars! By Holly Toman

Talbot Village Trust helps thousands of Poole residents through The Spire’s renovation Talbot Village Trust has donated £100,000 to Poole Methodist Church to undertake a project which has seen the introduction of a new café and a multipurpose auditorium at its community initiative, ‘The Spire’, on Poole High Street.
The grant has enabled the team to finish the building phase of this project that will continue to support and benefit many people within the local community. Work began by converting the main church into a two-story building with the community café on the ground floor and a new multi-purpose auditorium on the first floor. This new space will be used for exhibitions, concerts and meetings, as well as church services. In addition, by demolishing the old church halls, another two-storey building was built to accommodate smaller meeting rooms and halls for local charities and not-forprofit organisations to use when required. Eifron Hopper, Project Leader at The Spire, said: “The support of Talbot Village Trust has been an immense encouragement throughout the building phase of the project at ‘The Spire’.
We hope that the Trustees will feel as excited as we do about the ongoing work that their generosity has enabled.”
Russell Lucas-Rowe, Trustee of Talbot Village Trust, added: “We are so pleased to have helped with the completion of such an interesting and important project within Poole town centre. We are always happy to help further projects that have a positive impact on our community.” Talbot Village Trust meets biannually and is accepting applications for funding from both previous and new applicants in the area before the Trustees meet in spring 2020. Going Green... Looking after our planet is essential. It has become more and more apparent that we need to care for our environment. With that in mind I took an honest look at how much plastic I use on a daily basis. What could I replace by an eco-friendly alternative? I have been amazed by what I saw. Toothpaste. Traditional toothpaste is not only stored in environmentally damaging plastic, but it contains chemicals which could be damaging to our own health too. The toothpaste opposite is natural and contained in glass, which can be reused. I chose to try the tea tree version. Known for its powerful healing properties, throughout history, Tea Tree leaves have been used to heal cuts, treat burns, and as a topical application for infections. This toothpaste is a paste-like clay, so it takes a little adjusting, but I have to say I have found it really good and much less harsh on my aging gums. The other alternative is the peppermint toothpaste tablets. With a more traditional flavour these would be ideal for when we are travelling. As they are not liquid, they will not take up any hand luggage space, in those little plastic bags either! Double bonus. Of course, I needed a plastic free
toothbrush to go with it, so the sustainable beechwood version opposite is perfect! There is a children’s one, soft bristles or medium. Suitable for all the family. Stephen, my husband has tried the shave bar recently and proudly showed me his silky-smooth skin after shaving the other day! He really likes this product, so we highly recommend it. Again, it is natural for the skin, no chemicals and it is in a plastic free container. A natural handmade shaving soap, for a traditional wet shave, so wave goodbye to harsh gels and foams, and say hello to a gently soothing and creamy lather. A winner to us. Stephen hasn’t tried the classic shave with the Bambaw’s stylish double edge safety razor yet. I may have to work on that one! We can all make small changes, one step at a time, that will make a huge difference to our planet, our wildlife and our oceans… and indeed better for our own health too. The Dorset Directories Camper Van Daichi The Dashing Dude, our much-loved campervan, was missed last month. Certainly, one lady was quite upset that he had not taken us anywhere as we were too busy sailing the ocean waves around Alaska. Daichi himself had felt quite jilted and although he seemed ‘happy’ we had enjoyed ourselves, there was that little ‘frost’ in the air when he acknowledged ‘how pleased he was for us’. These Japanese vans do have a way about them… Well this month he was determined to make it up and he took us somewhere we had never been before – The Dorset Show. Yes! The Dorset Show. Can you believe it, we have never been. How ridiculous is that? I am sure that Daichi thought he could compete with all those immaculately dressed stallions. He rather fancied himself being groomed and brushed down. Or maybe it was all those jodhpurs and long leather boots, but that is going a little far as it is a family magazine after all. Daichi, really. The day was filled with blue
The skill of the scurry racing
Amazing final jump of the six-bar event skies and some of our wonderful fluffy white clouds. My Mum and Dad came with us as Mum was celebrating her 75th Birthday and my Dad of 84 drove all the way from Hull for the special weekend. What better way than for Daichi to take us all out? One thing to mention here is that when Daichi was kitted out with all his new (designer, of course) interior, we made sure there were three seats in the back, not two. We find this useful as the three of us can go out, with another couple. It also means the bed is wider when it rolls out, though the cupboards are a little narrower, so we had the fridge fitted under the back seat to give us more space for the cupboards. Clever! Off we all set. Daichi grinning from wheel to wheel. It was busy! The car park was full. On arriving in the showground there were thousands of people walking around the stalls, eating and drinking at the many food places and looking for bargains in the market area. We love the atmosphere

27 at these events. There is something quite special about our English country shows and this was no exception. We were lucky enough to have tickets for the member’s lawn, so we found perfect seats right next to the fence to watch the horses and their riders give us a show of their lives. They all looked so handsome and fine. The winning jump of the six-bar event was a spectacular 5 foot 10 high! We have a photo of the last leap. It was so exciting. “The Osborne Refrigerators Double Harness Scurry Class” was such fun. Nearly as nifty as Daichi on those country roads, the horses speeded between cones, in and out, left and right, to be the fastest to the finish line with no faults. That must be really exhilarating to take part in. Daichi is looking into it… uh oh… The elegance of the “Coaching Marathon Class” in comparison showed Daichi the sedate life of the rich in the past. It evoked images of young ladies whiling away their hours in their long lacy gowns, waiting for their Prince to sweep them off their feet. Daichi is getting all romantic now. Beautiful, graceful, stylish and wonderful to watch. The judges really

Now Daichi... don’t go getting ideas! have to know what they are looking for to pick a winner from such a polished class. Quite different and very much in contrast was the “Adrenaline Tour Motorbike Stunt Show”. How skilled are these riders in flying their bikes high in the air, screaming off on two wheels, flipping their machines at right angles. Wow. I really am hoping that Daichi does not get any ideas on this, or we may feel like we are all at sea again! What a fantastic day. Of course, a ‘little’ shopping had to be done and Dad bought me my Birthday present (shush don’t remind him it is not till December…). A lovely handcrafted bird bath. I also bought a leather door stop which I am rather fond of. Mum and Dad loved the whole day too. Daichi was as proud as punch that we enjoyed ourselves so much. On the way home I did see him looking at himself admiringly, at the reflection in a shop window. I am sure he saw the muscles of a Mustang or was it the strength of a Steed? Daichi was in his element. So were we. Where will he take us next month I wonder! By Debbie Corney

Tastes so good...
PULLED PORK SANDWICHES
As the temperature drops, we find ourselves wanting more easy to make, comfort food. Not only is this dish simple to create is also tastes delicious. Perfect for quiet Autumn nights in.
Ingredients for 12 servings 1 medium onion (chopped) ½ cup of ketchup ¼ cup of packed brown sugar ¼ cup of tomato paste 2tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 1/3 cup of cider vinegar 2tbp. sweet paprika 1 ½ tsp. Salt 1 ¼ tsp. ground black pepper 4lb boneless pork shoulder 12 buns or ciabatta rolls
Equipment: Large slow-cooker, large bowl, forks Method: Mix together the onion, ketchup, brown sugar, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, paprika, mustard and then add the salt and the pepper. Once you have done this, pour the sauce mixture into the slow cooker pot and add the pork, making sure to also coat it in sauce. Pop the lid on top of the slow cooker and cook the pork. Do this on a low setting (one which the manufacturer recommends). Cook until the pork is tender for between 8-10 hours. When it is finally cooked, move the pork from the slow cooker into a large bowl. Change the temperature setting on the cooker to ‘high’, cover the pot and then cook the sauce. Do this until boiling point is reached to make the mixture thicker. Pull the pork apart into shreds (you can use 2 forks for this). Then put the shredded pork back into the slow cooker, mixing it into the sauce. Cover once again and cook on high. Finally, once warmed through, spoon mixture into buns and serve.

Short Story: THE RESCUE...
Golden sand whipped the walls of my watch tower as I stood like a sentry watching over the dark, blue, menacing sea. Binoculars to my eyes, I searched for anything that shouldn’t be there - at least not in this storm. Waves at least ten feet tall stood proud before toppling over and emitting an enormous sound as the water slammed into either more water or sand. White foam covered the first 10 metres out from the water’s edge where all the waves deposited their immense amount of energy. All of a sudden, a peachy white hand shot out from under the water then sank again (I almost missed it, it happened so fast). Tiny pricks stabbed at my exposed face as I ran to the water’s edge; the wind howled at me not go out, waves presenting their terrible force as they crashed in front of me. Dark clouds rumbled in the distance waiting to unleash their own fury. I was watching like a hawk, my eyes scanning the sea for any signs of that person. Suddenly, the same hand, however this time two, appeared for another split second and disappeared as a wave, the size of my watch tower, engulfed them. I had to rescue them. They needed me. But what if I couldn’t do it? What if I made the situation worse? Could I take that risk? Yes. I grabbed the almost 11-foot, luminous yellow board and sprinted into the ferocious beast… The icy water stole my breath as my chest seized up and my legs started to freeze. The board slammed the surface of my enemy and I leaped out of the heat sapping liquid onto it; my hands went numb as I paddled, ploughing them into the water trying to power through and get to my target as quick as I could. My body ached, my arms burned, I couldn’t take it much longer. But they needed me. CRASH! A wave smacked my board, it almost entirely threw me off, as white foam surrounded me: I saw another coming, but it hadn’t broken yet. The rounded tip pierced and glided through the up rise of water like nothing. Immediately, I saw what was behind that puny wave… the king wave of the set I had just driven through swelled up and began racing towards me like a miniature tsunami. Moments later and I could see the dangerous white foam starting to spread across the crest. Either it had to break before it reached me, or I had to reach it before it started to plunge down on top of me. The race was on. My arms screamed in pain, my chest struggled to keep the supply of oxygen I needed, and I could no longer feel my hands. Numbness was slowly creeping over my body, its tendrils reaching out to every part dispersing any feeling I had there. I hope I can make it, I thought, as the king wave and I flew towards each other. It had not broken. Yet. However, I could see the crest creating a lip (it was starting to pitch over itself). It was about to break. Every part of my body wanted to give up and let the monstrous wall of water take me down with it, but I couldn’t let that happen. As I approached the wave my board started to rise, and I could see the water rushing towards me. I grasped my board and elevated my body as my board and I almost started to go vertical. I closed my eyes; I could do no more but hope… A thunderous discharge of energy pounded my ears. Did I survive? I opened my eyes to see my fluorescent board and I still together: my body still in the rigid position I had assumed. I peered behind me and saw huge amounts of white foam where the gigantic wave had plummeted into the water. Better luck next time, Poseidon , I thought, as I chuckled to myself and started to paddle again. My board gently rose and fell as swells of anticipated waves flowed past me. My perceptions snapped into action as I searched for the person I had come all this way for. A quick glance and I saw them: floating and unmoving. They needed me. I rapidly paddled over and in a flash was in the water flipping over my board; I grabbed their arms and placed them over my now upside-down
rescue craft. Balancing my adrenaline filled muscles and trying to be as careful as I could, I heaved the board back over as I held the person’s arms so that they followed its motion. Eventually, they lay perpendicular on my own lifeline. I twisted their body so that they were parallel and I could get on – it’s imperative for me to be on the board too. I swam round and faced my own saviour (the board) towards the golden sands where waves, still deathly aggressive, slammed into the beach. With a mighty pull on the handles, I slid onto the rear of the craft before engaging in the foreboding journey back. As I madly paddled towards safety with an unconscious body in front of me, I could feel the swells getting larger. This was it. I had done the first segment, but could I do the same again? Numbness had already conquered any feeling I had left, except the ones I didn’t want. All I could feel was the torture I was putting myself through: burning arms, burning chest, burning blood vessels as they fought to supply any energy they could scrape for me. My wetsuit tugged at my weakening arms and my hands began to splash the saltwater onto my face. I couldn’t do it. I could see that ten metre stretch of deadly white spray as the board cut through my enemy. While paddling, I felt the back of my board start to rise – a wave. I shifted my body backwards so that we didn’t nosedive into the glacial like water. It was enough, at least for now. The person I had rescued and I rode the wave towards the shore like a soaring seagull, as we raced with the wave. The wave grew bigger, stronger and more powerful the further we rode it towards safety. It was getting too large though, I couldn’t put enough of my weight rearwards. The nose of my board began to sink, water and salt flew into my eyes. It stung. It was as if wasps were sending their stingers straight into my eyes. It happened too quickly. The board dug its nose into the water and the corpse-like body and I tumbled off. My arms were too weak, they felt like lead, I couldn’t grasp anything - the board nor the person. The salt blinded me and my body sank beneath the waves. Was this it? Was this the end? I couldn’t do it. But I had come all this way… no. They needed me. Whoever I had tried to save hadn’t been saved just yet. I can’t give up, not after all of this. Strength surged into my muscles, adrenaline fuelled my heart and my own lifeless body began to twitch as I fought the reapers wrath and began to swim to the surface. My head burst out the water, instantly looking around wildly for my board or the person. Something was floating (it was too dark to be my board). I swam as if I had suddenly become an Olympic swimmer. Although my muscles were on fire and my eyes felt like they were melting, I carried on. I wrapped my arm around that other body and frantically kicked my legs and swung my arm under the water. I was so close; another eight metres and I was there – the final length. All alarms were ringing in my body, reverberating around my skull, telling me to stop what I was doing and give up. That wasn’t an option. Waves piled on top of us making my back sear in pain. I couldn’t let go. Not now. As if by a miracle, my foot kicked something underneath me, it was sand! I charged out of the water like a bull, still carrying the person I had rescued. I had done it. Dripping wet and icy cold I dragged the person toward my watch tower. I could now truly look at them without the danger of a wave engulfing us. I placed her on a chair and, with a shaking hand, dialled 999. Without hesitation, the lady at the other end had sent us an ambulance and told me we were going to be alright. The emergency services were on their way. I had done my duty. I sat down next to the lady I had rescued, my entire body shivering as I did, and I gently took hold of her hand and closed my eyes.
