Ford Kuga
By Tim Barnes-Clay, www.carwriteups.co.uk The Kuga came on to the scene in 2008. Built in two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive it was Ford’s response to SUVs, such as the Nissan Qashqai. It was also built to challenge more established 4x4s, such as the Honda CR-V. While it is no rocket ship, the Kuga 1.5T Ecoboost, on test here, does pick up pace fairly well (0-62mph in 9.7s) and feels particularly nippy around town. Its manual six-speed gearbox has a positive, smooth, action and the Ford delivers a relaxing, yet well-ordered ride at low speeds. The steering is light and direct – and this makes city driving and parking a breeze. Alas, there is far too much din in the road and wind noise department for the Kuga to be a serious motorway vessel. Safety is first-rate, though, with side and curtain airbags helping it achieve a five-star Euro NCAP crash-test result. Inside, the Kuga is quite spacious in the front, but its plunging roofline intrudes on headroom for taller passengers in the rear. Legroom for anyone approaching six-feet tall is also limited, however it’s a fine area for kids to sit comfortably. The 406-litre boot is bigger than the Ford Focus’ 316-litre offering – making the loading of a bulky pushchair and the weekly supermarket shopping even less of a hassle.
As alluded to earlier, the Kuga’s key rival is the Nissan Qashqai, with other opponents including the Kia Sportage and Volkswagen Tiguan. All of their boots are even bigger than the Ford’s by some margin. In fairness, though, the Ford Kuga Zetec 1.5T EcoBoost makes a good buy. It offers a decent mix of performance and size for families looking for a school-run-mobile. It is also frontwheel-drive - and this variant is really what you should try and get, unless you are desperate for 4x4 traction and off-road ability. Front-wheel-drive Kugas are a little bit cheaper to run than the four-wheel-drive versions and, if buying used, may well have been better cared for. The current Kuga is smart enough and has a generally reliable history, although it is starting to come over as a tad dated – but at least it’s a safe car. Fortunately, we won’t have too long to wait for a fresh Kuga. The Blue Oval hopes to fight the BMW X3 with a chicer, more elegant version of the SUV at the end of this year

Talbot Village Trust sends RAF Air Cadet Squadron soaring In celebration of its 75th anniversary, The Royal Air Force (RAF) Air Cadets 1069 Flight Refuelling Wimborne Squadron has been awarded with a £3,000 donation from Talbot Village Trust. The Air Cadet unit based in Wimborne is dedicated to supporting young people by providing training in all required aspects of flight to an RAF standard. Cadets also have the opportunity to take part in various outdoor activities including the Duke of Edinburgh Award. The donation received from the grant giving charity has enabled its flight simulator to be taken to new heights with the installation of up to date software for squadron training. Talbot Village Trust trustee, Nicholas Ashley-Cooper, 12th Earl of Shaftesbury, said: ‘‘I am pleased that the squadron chose to come to the Trust for help to update their facilities. ‘‘The Wimborne Squadron teaches a
number of young people the importance of discipline and also a range of highly complex skills. It is important for the community to continue to have the squadron as a stepping stone to a potential career in the RAF.’’ Flight lieutenant Nigel Winton, commanding officer explained: ‘‘This funding has allowed us to invest in updating software that was very much needed to continue to offer RAF training of the highest standard to our cadets. ‘‘In our 75th year, we are grateful that the Trust has allowed us to maintain the training which those before us have historically provided.’’ Talbot Village Trust meets biannually, and will be accepting applications for funding from both previous and new applicants in the area before the Trust meet again in November. Local Celebrity of the Month
Local celebrity of the month... Tell me all about it! Liam Openshaw and his brother Ryan who live in Poole are fantastic athletes, swimmers, life savers, and all round sportsmen. Liam recently won the British Schools Modern Biathlon Championships at Crystal Palace in March! He was then chosen for Team GB to represent Britain and went on to win the European round of the Biathle (run-swim-run) World Tour! I am absolutely sure we will be seeing lots of Liam and his brother in the next few years, and I am delighted that he has written a piece about himself for you to read and enjoy. Here is Liam... “How would I describe myself at the moment? I am a busy, happy, sporty 13 year old, squeezing in as many training sessions and competitions as I can into the week, and leaving just enough room to do my homework! I am a member of Poole Swimming Club, Branksome Chine Surf Life Saving Club, Poole Athletics Club and Dorset Pentathletes. I train about ten times a week – more running up to key competitions – mostly in the swimming pool but also strength work in the gym, running on the track, and then my favourite – on the beach and in the sea. In my spare time, I play the drums (I recently passed my Grade 3 with Merit) and I go to Poole Grammar School. I started Life Saving with Branksome Chine Surf Life Saving Club when I was eight and loved it from the start. I enjoy being out in the fresh air, powering into the sea for a swim and paddling a Race Board through the waves. Six months after joining the Club I was asked if I was going to go to the National Championships in Portreath, Cornwall. It sounded daunting and way above my ability, but I was assured that I would be fine, so signed up and went along. I was faced with waves over ten feet high - so big that I couldn’t paddle out through them on the Race Board, and ended up conceding the race from the wash at the foreshore. But I was hooked. And I have been to every National Championships since, eventually achieving
Liam Openshaw with his brother Ryan my goal and medalling last year – three times. My Club has also started competing at the National Indoor Championships, this year held in April, where I was so pleased to gain a further six medals – two of each colour. But my biggest achievement to date in the sea was winning the South West Open Water Championships, entitling me to swim at the British Open Water Championships in Sheffield, where I came seventh. I’m aiming to qualify this year and finish in the top five! I had just turned nine when I entered the Poole and East Dorset Schools Swimming Gala, and to my surprise won the backstroke race. Although I had been learning to swim with Swalings School of Swimming since a toddler, I had not joined a competitive Swimming Club. After a trial, I started swimming with Poole SC a few times a week, where I developed my stroke technique. Four years later, I now swim up to eight sessions and cover 40 kilometres a week in the pool, plus a further session of Open Water training in the sea. I train with some of my best friends, and we always manage to find time to have a laugh after the hard work is done in the pool. We support each other, and any competitiveness in the pool during races, is gone when we are back on poolside. I love competing, because when I swim, I am not only trying to race well

15 for myself but also for my team mates and Club. But it’s not all easy! There are days that I race and I am slower than I could be – my brother, Ryan, is two years younger than me, but he is pretty good in the pool – he manages to squeeze out times just seconds behind mine. It’s then that I get determined to work harder and train better, to make sure I can stay ahead of him for as long as possible! I’m determined he won’t beat me in a head to head race – but then I think he is just as determined to try beat me (and it might not be too long before that happens)! I’ve definitely learned that you have to make the most of every opportunity that is offered to you as you never know what it might lead to. Privileged to be nominated for a Poole Sports Council Award for swimming at the British Open Water Championships, at the ceremony last autumn, my dad noticed that one of the other recipients was a Modern Pentathlete. We did a quick bit of research, thought it looked interesting, and decided to have a go - I entered my first Biathlon at the South West Schools Championships last September – and won it. It has been a rollercoaster since, where I have been offered lots of exciting opportunities to progress in the sports that I love. This took me to Crystal Palace and Birmingham to compete in two British Championship events (so I started running with Poole Athletics Club to improve my technique), where

I finished first and second. I had become a British Champion!!! But I am very aware, that although I was the one that ran around that track, and swam down the pool, I couldn’t have done it without my family who pay for everything and drive me everywhere, and my coaches who train me to be the best I can be. Following the Champs, I was invited to join the English Talent Programme for GB Modern Pentathlon, which involves monthly training days where I have started to learn to shoot a laser pistol and to fence. This means that I can now compete in Modern Triathlons and Tetrathlons respectively. I still have a bit of work to do before I can do a full Modern Pentathlon as I will need to learn to ride a horse!!! BREAKING NEWS!!! At the European Championships in Portugal last month, Liam came fifth in the Triathle and won the bronze medal in the Biathle. His GB Biathle team also won the gold team event. Ryan came 11th in the Triathle and then won the bronze medal in the mixed Triathle relay. So Liam and Ryan have both qualified for the Triathle World Championships in Sarasota, Florida, in October 2016. They are due to attend the National Biathle at the end of this month which is the qualifier for the World Biathle Championships, also in Florida at the same time.
I’m just a normal 13 year old boy. I like my PS4, Instagram and iPad! But I am so lucky to have the opportunities to compete in sports that I love, with really good friends. Who knows how far I can go... But one thing is for sure – I’m going to keep working hard, trying new things, and most importantly, taking every opportunity that comes my way. I am so happy to be fit and healthy. I would like to shout out to everyone that supports me, including my mum, dad and brother Ryan, Jan and Barry at Poole SC, Ian, Dave, Hamish and Gus at Branksome Chine SLSC, Paul and Mark at Poole AC, Mick at Dorset Pentathletes, and all my friends that make training and competing fun.” Liam is looking for support for his sports, as all competitions are self funded. A Doorman’s Diary If you recall last month I told you of being asked many times if the hotel was haunted and of my strange encounter in the old “Kings Hall” ballroom, in the early 1960s after the hotel was sold to the “De Vere” group, it was renamed the “De Vere Suite”. I remember another weird experience... At times when the hotel was quiet us night porters would take our early morning break in the comfort of the main lounge. Directly above the main lounge is the “Lord Beaconsfield Suite” where Benjamin Disraeli, whilst Prime Minister, stayed for a few months whilst recovering from gout. During his stay he held three cabinet meetings in his suite in 1874-5. Apparently it was Queen Victoria who recommended him to take the salubrious air of Bournemouth. One morning whilst we were sat in the lounge having a break we heard a loud thud which came from the “Lord Beaconsfield Suite” above where we were sitting, we knew there were no guests on that floor so we dashed to the suite and discovered an oak table had been moved a few feet and was on its side! We double checked every room and could find no explanation as to how this happened. During the week we would have one or two coach tours arrive at the hotel mostly from abroad, which kept both day and night porters busy, unloading all their luggage and escorting them to their rooms. Mind you it was a well planned exercise and all the guests were happy, also a charge of 10p for each piece of luggage so us porters were also happy with our little share out at the end of the week. The Bournemouth International Centre is where the main political parties at one time or another held their party conferences and is only a short walk from the hotel of course many of the deligates would stay with us. My first conference was the one that I shall never forget, it was1986 and the Conservative Party held their first conference two years after the “Grand Hotel” was bombed by the I R A! With many senior politicians staying at the hotel you can imagine security was at its highest level, everyone was on high alert. There was one most important duty we had to do, which was to sort out and deliver the morning newspapers, they would arrive at around 5-30am, you can imagine rather a big delivery. On the second morning of the conference one of the major newspapers were late, so I was told to stand outside and meet the delivery car and bring them in on arrival. I was having a chat to the policeman who was on duty, when a car pulled up and a large Tesco carrier bag was thrown and landed by the front door, I went to pick It up when the policeman shouted for me not to touch it as it was ticking rather loudly, I didn’t hang around it was a major bomb alert!
We had to evacuate every room at the front of the hotel very quickly! I ran along the corridors banging on every door and shouting for the guests to get out now as there was a bomb alert, most of them did all except one who shouted back to me “I shall leave as soon as I have finished cleaning my teeth” so I replied “If you don’t get out now sir you will not have any teeth left to clean as there is a bomb just outside your room” that did the trick! The man who threw the mock bomb was arrested just down the road, and I heard eventually he was sentenced to spend a few years behind bars. It was not long after the bomb scare that I was summond to see the hotel general manager, of course I Immediately thought that I may well have upset one of the senior politicians! When we met he told me that he had received some very glowing reports of my rapport with the guests, and would I consider changing from working nights to days, meeting and greeting guests as the hotels doorman, I was over the moon to accept my new position, which would be the final phase of my working life! Apart looking after the arrivals and departures I also spent some time in the foyer, talking to the guests and answering many questions, I found myself being a sort of a mini information centre. I made sure that I did some research on the history of the hotel also Bournemouth and places of interest . Another thing I soon discovered, was at times I had to be a little diplomatic dealing with the public. Outside the main entrance there was only enough spaces for around six cars, which at times meant I would move a one or two to keep the front door clear for any new arrivals, a chance for me to drive all the top of the range motorcars! After the bomb scare the hotel was one high alert, we were receiving at least one thankfully they were all false, only once I recall the whole hotel having to be evacuated through the era of the IRA bombing! “Uncle” Ron Hands

Bournemouth based Holt Recruitment has donated an Adaptive Tricycle to Victoria Education Centre, in Dorset The donation is part of Holt Recruitment’s ongoing campaign to support Victoria Education Centre (VEC), a day and residential Special School in Poole, Dorset, which is run by the national charity Livability. Holt Recruitment has donated a special tricycle, made by acclaimed USA company, Rifton. The tricycle has been specially designed for children who have significant mobility issues. With special features such as a supportive backrest, a low transfer step, choice of handlebars, and puncture-proof wheels, the Rifton Adaptive Trike can be adjusted to suit individual requirements. Children love cycling: to ride a bike is one of childhood’s first experiences of independence. Suddenly, whether on two wheels or three, you are cycling alone, hanging on to the handlebars, peddling away, maybe a bit wobbly at first, but determined to ride away. We all remember the exhilaration of that first moment when you are no longer being pushed or pulled along, you are finally, on your own, riding unaided!

Kitchens: The heart of the home, once again Look back to the cookery shows of the late 1990s and early 2000s and you can see exactly where our kitchen inspiration came from - the anodyne, sleek, chrome-clad kitchens of professional chefs such as Gordon Ramsay, Jamie Oliver and Heston Blumenthal.
All of a sudden the warm, cosy kitchens of our parents, the kind of kitchen which Grand Dame of home cookery Delia Smith would have prepared a roast chicken dinner in - wooden cabinets, tiled floors and floral curtains - were out. Instead, we were pouring concrete, installing stainless steel ranges and finding new and ingenious ways to open cupboards without using anything as unsightly as handles. The home kitchen became as close to the galley of a top London restaurant’s backroom as it was possible to get: a functional space in which to create cordon-bleu spagbol and show off our collection
of vintage Burgundies in the sleek built-in wine rack.
But unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past few years you can’t have failed to notice a change. Yes, many of us are still looking to Poggenpohl and Tecnocucina for sleek lines and white, white, white, but even more are putting the heart back in to the kitchen. It’s been happening for a while. Cath Kidston and Emma Bridgewater have been tempting us with spotty egg cups and cutesy 1950s inspired cutlery, Nigella Lawson has been extolling the virtues of her Kitchen Aid mixer as she licks yet another mixing bowl clean and Nigel Slater has made the move from print to television, picking ingredients from his allotment garden to make cosy suppers in his homely TV kitchen which might have the limited colour palette of the 1990s cookery show kitchen but which exudes welcoming warmth with bare wood and earth tones. might have been swayed to adding a little splash of colour back at his home where nobody can see it. Once again an Aga is the top of the kitchen wishlist. In every colour going, it’s almost a shame not to buy one in bright red or retro yellow - even Ms Bridgewater has designed one in her trademark country kitchen-esque primary colour spot. A cast iron range is undoubtedly the central feature in any family kitchen worth its salt, but if you can’t afford one (and they are ludicrously expensive) adding heartfelt character to your kitchen is simple. Patterns such
as spots, stripes, hearts and stars are cute and colourful whether on crockery, cutlery or just your tea towels. Attaching a devil-maycare attitude to tidiness is a must too, within reason…open shelving filled with colourful bits and bobs, pretty bottles, cookbooks and retro finds look great while hanging your utensils above the stove or even pans from a ceiling rack has an olde worlde vibe and makes everything easy to find. There are endless ways to bring your kitchen in to the 2010s but the most important thing is to make it a living space once again.

Haskins Garden Centre hosts Bulb Festival this autumn Haskins Garden Centre is hosting a Bulb Festival throughout autumn, to celebrate the fanfare of colours provided by bulb planting.
Starting now, the festival will highlight bulb flower varieties and demonstrate that there is a colour to suit everyone’s taste. In particular, the festival will showcase ‘Tulip Queensland,’ Haskins’ bulb of the year. The Tulip Queensland is a soft-pink fringed variety, with longlasting double flowers that make a perfect cut flower for a vase. More than 300 different varieties of bulbs are available to buy at Haskins, including some unusual varieties such as Daffodil ‘Green Eyes,’ Dwarf Iris ‘Blue Note’ and Anemone ‘Bordeaux.’

Debit cards can be debt cards too. The competition watchdog’s set out plans to cap fees for busting your overdraft limit. This should help, but don’t wait. Overdrafts are a debt like any other, and the key is to cut the rate, repay faster and avoid any penalties. Most people’s overdrafts aren’t huge. My snap Twitter poll found 46% are under £250. Yet even then fees can be horrid. With some accounts, a constant £200 overdraft would cost you £365/yr. So even if you only dip in, you need to sort them. Here are my top ten things you need to know. 1. Get PAID £100 to get a 0% overdraft. Best for overdrafts under c. £500 www.Firstdirect.com has won every customer service poll I’ve ever done, and 89% of its overdrawn customers rate it ‘great’. It offers accepted new switchers £100 (paid within around 28 days) – that’ll clear some of your overdraft to start with. Then for the remainder it gives a standard £250 interest-free overdraft (above £250, but within your limit, it’s 15.9% EAR, still relatively cheap). It’s a clear winner for those with overdrafts that never go over £350, and still likely best even if you owe a little more but intend to clear it. Do you qualify? You need to pay in at least £1,000/mth (equivalent to £13,100 salary) to get the bonus and ensure there’s no fee. Like all banks, First Direct does a credit check when you apply. 2. Free £150 bank switch bonus. Best for those who just dip into their overdraft If at the end of the month you occasionally slip into overdraft, www.co-operativebank.co.uk (70% rate it ‘great’) is a decent alternative. It
currently gives an £150 switching bonus. If that’s enough to clear your overdraft so you needn’t touch it again, it’s an easy win especially as you can also get up to £5.50/mth on its Everyday Rewards scheme (you need to fulfil some criteria). If not, its authorised overdraft is 18.9% EAR, not bad for small amounts, but the bigger it gets, the costlier. Do you qualify? You’ll need to pay in at least £800/mth (equivalent to £9,850 salary) and switch at least four direct debits to get the £150 bonus. 3. Switch to 12 month 0% bank. Good for those with Bigger overdrafts. New customers with www.nationwide.co.uk’s FlexDirect (77% rate it ‘great’) get a year’s fee-free overdraft. There’s no set limit – it depends on credit score – but anecdotally its limits are decent (if you pass the credit score), as mattboliver tweeted me: “@martinslewis Matched my old one - £1,200. Implied I could have asked for more, but the point was I wanted to pay off.” After a year, it’s 50p/day, less than other accounts charging daily fees, but even so, use that time to budget to clear the overdraft debt. Nationwide doesn’t require a min pay-in for its 0% overdraft, but you need pay in £1,000/mth if you want its 5% in-credit interest (equivalent to £13,100 salary). 4. You can SHIFT overdrafts to special 32mth 0% credit cards too A few specialist money-transfer cards let you pay cash into your bank to pay off your overdraft, then you owe them instead. This is useful for big overdrafts.@MoneySavingExpert

Shift your direct debits to minimise fees. Ask companies you pay to shift your direct debits to just before you’re paid. So if you’re paid on the 25th, aim for the 20th. This artificially boosts your balance, so you’re in the red for less time, meaning fewer charges – but budget carefully and don’t forget those bills are coming. 7. Manage your way back into credit. Do a money makeover, checking everything you spend money on to see if you’re overspending

such as energy, insurance, phone, broadband and more. Many can save £1,000s. Then do a detailed budget and stick to it. Full help to do this at www.moneysavingexpert.com/ moneymakeover 8. Compare overdraft debt rate to the other debt, repay highest interest first. If you’ve multiple debts, write a list of what you owe, then see which costs most, adding up interest and fees for true costs. If your overdraft ’s the most expensive, make minimum payments on all other debts, and focus on using incoming cash to clear that. If it’s not the costliest, stay in your overdraft (but never bust your limit) and use spare cash to pay as much off the costliest as you can. Once the most expensive debt is cleared, you’re ready to tackle the next, and so on. 9. Savings usually pay you less than an overdraft costs. A £1,000 overdraft costing £20/mth equals £240/yr, but the same in easy-access savings earns a paltry £15 at best. So repay debt with savings and you’re £225 per £1,000 up each year. You may think: “But I’ll have no savings if the boiler packs up or the roof falls in.” True, but if an emergency strikes, you can go back into overdraft and you’ll be no worse off. 10. Struggle to control spending? Shift to a nooverdraft account. Basic bank accounts provide a no-frills, nooverdraft current account service. So clear your current overdraft and you could move to one. They used to charge fees if you spent more than you had, eg, for unpaid direct debits, but since January those have stopped. If you spend when you’ve not got money, it’ll still be rejected, but now there’s no charge. And not just for men too ashamed to admit to other men that they flunked woodwork at school. Don’t worry, though, we’ve put our heads together and come up with a solution. If you’re confused about buying drills simply read this page- so you don’t have to ask anyone- whilst making sure nobody nearby can see what it is you’re reading. The result- immediate(ish) in-depth knowledge on cordless drills. You’re welcome. Hammer Drills If you need to drill through tough materials like masonry and concrete then a hammer drill is the only way to do it. Enough said then. Impact driver Thanks to their high torque (turning power) and high impact force, impact drivers give the best possible performance when using large screws on metal and wood, with no recoil adding extra safety to the equation. Drill driver Capable of performing two tasks, with a drill driver you can bore holes in materials as you would expect whilst in ‘drill’ mode, but you can also use these for ‘driving’ and loosening up the screws too. Adjustable power means you can set it to suit the material you’re using, avoiding getting screws too tight and damaging the material. Combi drill Understandably one of the most popular choices, as the name suggests combi drills can perform several different tasks. So, you might opt for a model that can act as a hammer drill, putting
holes in solid materials, but can also be a drill driver and drive screws. Things to remember Volts - The higher the voltage the more powerful the drill, but you also need to factor in useable output, or torque... Torque - This is how twisting power is measured, in Nm. The higher the Nm the more maximum torque the drill can produce. A drill with adjustable torque can be particularly useful if you are working with different surfaces and materials (wood, for example, needs less than brick). Hammer action / drill driver - Hammer is essential for drilling into masonry, and the performance in this context is measured in BPM. Drill drivers should only be used on softer materials. Speed - RPM provides the measurement for drill speed, and it’s always wise to look for a drill with variable RPM. Charge time - Obviously, opt for drills with low charge times... Batteries - ...but high battery life. Lithium-ion batteries are particularly useful, providing long life and short charge times, not to mention lower battery pack weight. Gears - Some drills offer two gears, so you can increase torque without having to increase speed. Drilling at low speeds is standard for delicate materials like tile and glass, the low speed decreasing the chance of breakage. Chucks - The chuck is responsible for holding the drill bit in place. Single sleeve keyless chucks give easy bit change access and improve overall retention.

Just Shutters 10 year anniversary celebrations go with a bang! 16th September saw Just Shutters of Southbourne celebrate 10 years at the top of their field! Celebrations took place at the Just Shutters Head Office and flagship showroom in Southbourne Grove, just a road away from where the company began, in a spare room of the founders family home 10 years ago. The past decade has seen Just Shutters grow from a small family business, to a market leading brand covering more than 125 towns and cities in the UK. Joined by all franchisees, staff, local businesses and members of the press, the team at Just Shutters enjoyed beautiful food, bubbly and a presentation from owner Chris Rocker before a superb celebration cake was cut and enjoyed by all. Magician Chris Hare, wowed and delighted everyone as the afternoon progressed.
Celebrations went on through the evening and into Saturday when the team threw open the doors and along with the help of Mr Alexander (entertainer extraordinaire), entertained happy customers, invited guests and those out and about in Southbourne. At 1pm the Mayor Councillor Edward Coope and Mayoress Janet Coope dropped by to congratulate the business on the milestone. The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Directories Camper Van Wow what weather we had for a good couple of months. Nellie has had to use lots of suncream this year, or was it polish? Still she looked good. The day she took Hayden and myself to Brownsea Island was a scorcher. Beautiful sunshine and hardly a cloud in sight. Stephen had gone off on a course to help him be more efficient, so I was all for that. Nellie was pleased too, as with her aging years she doesn’t take stress easily and is all for a relaxed, chilled out life these days. Anything Stephen can do to facilitate that, had to be good. This left Hayden and I (that’s correct English isn’t it?) with a day to ourselves. Where would Nellie take us? She did quite a bit of research on the internet to see how far places were and came up with the bright idea (as I said, it was a brilliantly sunny day) to take us to Brownsea Island. It was years since I had taken Hayden. He was a baby in a pram in fact, but don’t remind him of that, after all he is a grown up boy now and they don’t like it. You really feel you are going somewhere when you step on the boat at

Nellie on the quay with another old lady Poole Quay and sail off from the harbour wall. Nellie of course had to wave good bye at that point as she is too fat to get up the gangway. About that diet… Bobbing up and down, watching all the different boats sailing by, passing the busy dock on the opposite side, where really large cargo ships get filled with all their wares to go out to sea and sail to some foreign land, is so relaxing. There is definitely a whole ‘in the past feel’ about Poole Quay, as if time hasn’t fully moved on. Brownsea Island is very similar. Now owned by the National Trust and famous for its red squirrels, you have the sensation that you have stepped back in time and are miles away from anywhere. The island was owned by Mrs BonhamChristie from 1927. She was a recluse and gave everyone living there a year’s notice to leave. As a result the population went down from around 70 to 6! One advantage of that, though I am sure the residents would have had something else to say, is that the island preserved its authenticity, its simplicity, and nature

39 was allowed to flourish. The little Church built in 1853 is idyllic, a real chocolate box look. (Nellie does like her chocolate, as you can see from her thighs.) There is no lighting or water and services here held from May to September by candle light only. Apparently there maybe anywhere from two to three hundred at any given Church service. All of a sudden two minutes before the service starts 300 Brownies can arrive. That is a challenge for the Reverend! The scouting movement is very much embraced on the Island after the founder Robert Baden-Powell held his first camp there in 1907. The day we arrived there were many Guides and Scouts who were leaving after a great camp, by the look of it. I can imagine it is quite a place to stay in a tent, under the stars with very few people around and just the birds, peacocks and squirrels to keep you company. Nellie would love it, but sadly she would never be able to get there, let alone stay. Now boys will be boys, especially in this modern world we live in and Hayden had his phone with him trying to catch Pokemon. If you don’t know what that is, don’t worry. From what I understand, and believe me I am absolutely no expert, they are little animals that you find on your phone, wherever you may be. Very clever technology and in total juxtaposition (for those not so quite well educated, that

Nellie taught me it! ) with the ‘old’ island, set back a century or so ago. Apparently there is a ‘Pikachu’ on the island! These are rare and much sought after by Pokemon players, so that was very exciting. Hayden didn’t catch it, but it was good fun trying. I have to say that a day with Hayden on my own was totally fulfilling. We don’t get many chances in our busy lives to just take time out, time together and chill. Nellie’s sole purpose in life is to help us do just that, which is why we bought her. I am so glad we did. Hayden and I walked to the fantastic beaches on the North side of the Island and gazed at the beautiful scenery. It really is quite spectacular. After some time walking I asked Hayden what he would like to do. Knowing his Mum very well, and having an ‘old head on young shoulders’ he suggested we go back to the café for an hour to have something to eat… and a coffee, before boarding our boat to take us back to reality. What an incredible day. Nellie was delighted we had enjoyed it so much. She was patiently waiting in the car park and sprung into step as soon as I turned her engine on. Love her. World’s most famous gardeners It’s probably relatively safe to say that few people go into green-fingered pursuits for fame or fortune. And if they do they must already realise their work is very much cut out for them. Nevertheless, thanks to our love of watching things grow, and learning about the steps necessary to cultivate that growth, there have been a few faces lucky enough to cement a reputation in the horticultural public conscious. We decided to come up with a few of our all-time favourites, so take a look and see if you don’t agree.

After rising to fame in the Ground Forceera, alongside another of our picks, Mr. Titchmarsh, Dimmock hasn’t stopped improving the outdoor lives of others, with her most recent endeavour coming in the form of Garden Rescue. A true crusader for the cause.

DIY and Home Improvement: A brief history of bathrooms If you grew up in the immediate post-World War II years, then chances are you remember the outside lav. A cold and somewhat uninviting place, whether you had one at home, or simply knew someone that still hadn’t moved their toilet inside, considering how long it took for Britain to master the art of running water in the home it’s remarkable to think that only 70 years ago many of us were still dashing out the backdoor whenever we needed to relieve ourselves. The story of bathrooms is far more interesting than many would give credit for. Few would guess it was the privy council of Elizabeth I’s reign that invented the flush toilet, for example. On record, there’s no evidence the monarch used it herself, and it’s hard to blame her for being so neglectful, given that without the luxury of a running water supply these technological innovations defined the term ‘well
before their time’.
It was only in the mid-19th Century, with a cholera epidemic in London, that one Dr. John Snow began taking the first steps towards revolutionising how we washed, and where. Mapping the locations at which victims succumbed to the disease, he noticed that many were concentrated close to a public water pump at 37 Broad Street. Suggesting that the handle to power the sanitary kit should be removed, once this happened the epidemic stopped immediately. Somewhat inadvertently, he had managed to prove a correlation between human waste and disease, showing people that sanitation, in particular excrement waste disposal, needed to be located far from drinking water sources. Thus the Metropolitan Water Act was introduced, in the hope of

making ‘provision for securing the supply to the metropolis of pure and wholesome water’. The public pumps were replaced with pipes delivering water directly to the home. It didn’t take long for another revelation to materialise. Architects and homeowners of the day were somewhat confused as to how this new trend should be standardised. In the first days, weeks and months, pipes were being fitting into homes rather haphazardly, with fresh water sent into every bedroom to supply sinks that were now replacing old washstands. Flush toilets themselves were stuck anywhere large enough to house them, usually a closet, hence the ‘water closet’. Soon this practice proved to be far too expensive for most, and so rather than piping the supply to multiple parts of the house, experts realised it was far simpler, and cheaper, to concentrate on
one, specifically designed room. Thus the bathroom was born, a corner of the home that would be spacious enough to boast both toilet and washing facilities like baths and sinks. At first these were lavish and highly decorated, largely due to the fact that early adopters were usually rich, but soon, with the advent of germ theory, they took on a more hospital-like look, with the focus being making them easy to clean and sanitise via tiles or porcelain; not a million miles from what we still have in our homes today.

‘Me Too’ - Ian W Brown lines up local dates Ian W Brown has nothing to do with The Stone Roses and everything to do with being the Ivor Novello-nominated songwriter from the New Forest who’s playing a set of headline dates this autumn. Inspired by bemused Stone Roses fans he met at Purbeck Folk Festival a couple of years ago Ian’s debut single Me Too has struck a chord wherever it was heard at festivals and on Radio 2 during the course of a year that has seen him step out of his songwriting shed and take the stage at Glastonbury, Cornbury, Wimborne, Greenwich and Purbeck as well as support Rita Coolidge on tour and folk royalty Julie Felix in Ringwood. Along the way another of Ian’s songs, I’m Gone, provided drum&bass legends Drumsound & Bassline Smith featuring Bully with a d&b number one and the lyrics to his song It’s Hard To be Humble were published in a poetry book for children in August. Although he was nominated for an Ivor Novello for co-writing Sandi Thom’s number one, I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker and the album from which it was taken, and has written songs for the likes of Fisherman’s Friends, Show Of Hands, Jason Donovan, D Side, Pixie Lott, Graham Gouldman, Henry Priestman and Meryl Streep – not to mention co-writing the lead song in the West End musical Dreamboats and Petticoats – performing and writing songs is Ian’s hobby. Which explains why he didn’t release his first single until his fiftieth year. “I always feel a bit sorry for people who think I’m going to be the Stone Roses singer,’ he says. “I mean, frankly I would rather see him than me! The song is about sharing your name with someone famous and having to deal with all the day-to-day business of living that you presume they don’t, but when you think about it they do – we’re all the same, we all get lonely and we all get sad.”

In its 13th year, the awards received just under a 1,000 entries from businesses and individuals across England. The Bournemouth & Poole College is the largest apprenticeship provider in Dorset and manages the Superior apprenticeship scheme in conjunction with the manufacturer through their Academy programme. The College support Superior with intermediate, advanced and higher apprenticeships. All of which are accredited by The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). Once completing the higher national apprenticeship students are given the opportunity to study a degree in Engineering at The Bournemouth & Poole College, all which is funded by Superior. Katie Bodman, Superior’s head of training Academy, said: “We’re delighted to have reached the regional finals in the National Apprenticeship Awards 2016. We invest a lot of our time making sure Superior is a great place to work, and in particular making sure that the young apprentices are supported to be able to flourish into senior roles.

On Your Plot Benefits of Garlic
Time spent on clearing and preparing your beds now will pay dividends next year. Make the most of the autumn sunshine to get compost dug into bare beds and you’ll have saved yourself hours of work on those chilly Spring days.
Jobs for October :-
• Make sure that plenty of sun can get to your pumpkins in order to get them ripe in time for Halloween. • Plant garlic, shallots and Japanese onions. • Leaving dead seed heads etc. on your flower borders will provide valuable food and shelter for garden wildlife over winter, as will leaving an undisturbed log or two. Build a rough shelter in a quiet corner and you might get a hedgehog move in! • If you get lots of fallen leaves on your plot don’t waste them. Make a bin from chicken wire attached to 4 posts. Fill this with the leaves and they will rot down to give you sweet-smelling black leaf mould in one to two years tim.
As the days get shorter and the weather gets cooler the focus on your vegetable plot starts to turn from growing and harvesting, into clearing and tidying. October is a good month for taking stock of how things have gone this year and starting to make plans for what you will grow in the future. Removing spent crops exposes slugs and other such pests to birds and other garden friendly wildlife. It also gives you the chance to look after your soil and assess how the space will be used next. Crop rotation is important so if the space is to remain bare over winter it may be wise to make notes about what grew where this season. Add matter from your compost heap to newly cleared areas, either digging it in, or leaving a layer on the top where the worms will gradually incorporate it into the deeper soil over winter. If the soil is heavy leaving it bare will enable frosts to help break it up. Our soil is lighter and benefits from being covered over - we use flattened cardboard boxes which protect from the rain (and we’ve all had enough of that lately!), and
also help keep the weeds at bay. You may think that it’s all too late in the year to be planting, but there are some crops that definitely need to be thought of now, and others that, given an early start now, will benefit next Spring. If you’ve not grown garlic before, then do try it - it’s easy to grow, can help protect other crops from pests, and with just a small amount of space you can grow enough to see you through the whole year! Now is definitely the time to order your garlic bulbs and they can be planted anytime between now and Christmas, but preferably not when the soil is too wet. Rather than planting all the garlic together it may pay to spread it around the plot as the strong smell can be an aid in keeping pests such as the carrot root fly away from other crops. Each garlic bulb should be separated into individual cloves and the cloves are planted with the pointed end uppermost, just below the surface, leaving about 4 inches between each one. They like well drained soil and you’ll be pleasantly surprised in the long winter days to see their green tips creeping upwards. Each clove matures into a whole new bulb. The traditional time for harvesting garlic is in June, on the longest day of the year and if properly dried and stored it will keep right through the winter. Would you like some fresh, tender, young, peas early in the Spring next year? Look out for hardy varieties that can be planted now. They can be overwintered and are able to withstand the frosts, though protection with a cloche will be appreciated. We will be starting ours in pots to keep in the polytunnel over winter ready for early planting next season.

Full steam ahead for thirty year celebrations at Moors Valley Railway
Seventeen engines in full steam led the 30-year celebrations at Moors Valley Railway on 17 and 18 September as hundreds of people turned out to experience the enduring appeal of the south’s longest, fully signalled, narrow gauge 7¼ steam railway.
The last 30 years have seen the Moors Valley Railway carry over three million passengers around its mile-long track. The special anniversary gala weekend of steam featured 10 trains, carrying both passengers and freight. It also paid tribute to the railway’s unique history with a photographic timeline, and offered the opportunity to sneak a peek behind the scenes at the work currently underway building and maintaining all the engines and rolling stock.

Based at Moors Valley Country Park near Ringwood, the Moors Valley Railway is a family run business that has delighted over 3 million passengers since it opened in 1986. Moors Valley Country Park shortlisted for prestigious tourism award Moors Valley Country Park and Forest has been announced as a finalist in two categories of the prestigious Dorset Tourism Awards 2016.
Judged overall ‘Winner of Winners’ in the 2015 awards, for 2016 the Park wanted to showcase its work in two specific areas not normally associated with a successful large visitor attraction. Moors Valley entered two categories, ‘Access and Inclusivity’ and ‘Sustainable Tourism’. The Park’s Rangers are delighted to have been shortlisted as finalists for both awards. The Dorset Tourism Awards attracted 107 entries this year, 40% up on 2015. For the finalists, all elements of the business had to be excellent, with some of them outstanding.

PULLED PORK SANDWICHES
As the temperature drops, we find ourselves wanting more easy to make, comfort food. Not only is this dish simple to create is also tastes delicious. Perfect for quiet Autumn nights in.
Ingredients for 12 servings 1 medium onion (chopped) ½ cup of ketchup ¼ cup of packed brown sugar ¼ cup of tomato paste 2tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 1/3 cup of cider vinegar 2tbp. sweet paprika 1 ½ tsp. Salt 1 ¼ tsp. ground black pepper 4lb boneless pork shoulder 12 buns or ciabatta rolls
Equipment: Large slow-cooker, large bowl, forks Method: Mix together the onion, ketchup, brown sugar, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, paprika, mustard and then add the salt and the pepper. Once you have done this, pour the sauce mixture into the slow cooker pot and add the pork, making sure to also coat it in sauce. Pop the lid on top of the slow cooker and cook the pork. Do this on a low setting (one which the manufacturer recommends). Cook until the pork is tender for between 8-10 hours. When it is finally cooked, move the pork from the slow cooker into a large bowl. Change the temperature setting on the cooker to ‘high’, cover the pot and then cook the sauce. Do this until boiling point is reached to make the mixture thicker. Pull the pork apart into shreds (you can use 2 forks for this). Then put the shredded pork back into the slow cooker, mixing it into the sauce. Cover once again and cook on high. Finally, once warmed through, spoon mixture into buns and serve.

Harold G Walker helps Forest Holme hospice repair vandalised sunflower garden Harold G Walker Solicitors have paid to repair the vandalised memorial garden in Poole Park, preventing financial loss to a Dorset hospice charity. The Sunflower Garden unveiled earlier this month aimed to raise funds and awareness for the 1,000 patients cared for by Forest Holme Hospice each year. Only days after being opened to the public several of the garden’s handmade ceramic Sunflowers were vandalised resulting in £300 worth of damage. Nicola Lowe, Managing Partner said “Forest Holme Hospice has provided outstanding care for relatives of our staff and so this is a cause we are delighted to support. We were saddened to learn of the heartless act of vandalism to the Sunflower Garden and only too happy to help support
