Hello Bournemouth, Autumn is now truly here, the nights are drawing in and the air is somewhat cooler. Stephen, Hayden and I did in fact get our last dip in the sea just a couple of weeks ago. We have a rubber dinghy, not quite like the yachts we see bobbing in the water, but fun nevertheless. Wet suits are a good idea too! I looked very glamorous in mine… Can I hear you laughing? This month in The Bournemouth Directory we have our very important trades and business people to call. I generally think things are looking up—I deliberately don’t listen to the news—so make sure the house and garden are ready for the colder season. Is the boiler working fine? Are the electrics all good? Does the garden need a tidy, does the chimney need sweeping or do you need new fitted wardrobes to cope with all those winter clothes? All the help you will find inside. Please do keep our local businesses busy! If you have a local club you would like us all to know about or have an interesting story to tell, then please let me know. I would love to hear from you. Have you lived in Bournemouth a long time and want to share your memories — then do give me a call. We can share them with the rest of the community. I am also looking for a local historian. Do you know of someone? The lucky winner of the pair of tickets to see the Jonny Cash Roadshow was Mrs A Brazier. Well done! We hope you enjoy the show. Here’s to a good month of October. Best Wishes,

Debbie

Green House Hotel gets national recognition Bournemouth hotel The Green House received national recognition the other night when it was named AA Eco Hotel of the Year 2012-13, sponsored by British Gas, at the AA Hospitality Awards held at the London Hilton, Park Lane. The AA Eco Hotel of the Year award recognises a clear commitment to sustainability, demonstrated through good practice and policy to make a positive contribution to reducing impact on the environment. In addition to the standard eco steps such as energy saving light bulbs and recycling, The Green House in Bournemouth has spent the past four years instigating over 100 eco initiatives to make sure that guest are spoilt without spoiling anything else. From locally sourced produced including carpets and furniture, which is made from storm or tree surgeon felled timber, to on-site generation of electricity, eco paint and wallpaper and even a company car that runs on used cooking oil from the kitchen, the team at The Green House really do go that extra mile for their guests and the environment. Speaking of their win, General Manager Olivia O’Sullivan said, ‘We are absolutely thrilled to be recognized by the AA as Eco Hotel of the Year!! At The Green House, we live and breathe sustainability; spoiling our guests without spoiling anything else!’ The AA Hospitality Awards, hosted this year by Kate Silverton, saw the great and good of the country’s hospitality industry come together to celebrate not only the amazing achievements of the individuals and establishments receiving recognition

for outstanding excellence in their field but also 20 years of the iconic AA Restaurant Guide. The evening opened with a tribute to the AA Restaurant Guide by Heston Blumenthal and Raymond Blanc before the superb gourmet meal created by chef Jason Atherton and the team at the London Hilton Park Lane and entertainment from glamorous string quartet Siren. The award event also sees the launch of the 2013 AA guides to UK hotels, restaurants, pubs and B&Bs which contain details of all the winning establishments.

Deaf Awareness Training Session (Free of charge) Date Venue -

Saturday, 27th October, 2012 Time - 10am to 12.30pm The Durley Dean Hotel, 28 West Cliff Road, Bournemouth, BH2 5HE

To book your place please register before Friday, 19th October, 2012 Contact - Tel: 01425 270773 or email babsjere@aol.com The Deaf Aware Training Session is in two parts - the theory and practical activities. The Training Session starts with a questionnaire - asking questions about what participants know about deafness - before the course. During the training all questions are examined and at the end of the session we look at the questions again. No scores are taken and everybody passes. During the theory session, which lasts about 45 minutes, information is exchanged between the Presenter and course participants covering the extent of the problem, causes of deafness and clues for recognising deafness. The practical activities last for around one and a half hours and it is definitely audience participation time. Practical ways for the hearing person to communicate with the hearing impaired person are explored, we can have a meaningful conversation - but it is not always using speech. We explore lip reading, signing, finger spelling, signed supported English, cued speech, mime and gesture- i.e. charades, pictures/symbols, written communication. There is no one right way to communicate. The means of communication is dependant on the two parties concerned. The Training Session gives all participants an introduction to different ways to communicate. It is a theoretical and practical course which provides skills for everyone to improve communication skills with the people who have a slight hearing loss to those who cannot hear anything. Whether those attending directly work with hearing impaired people or they have a relative, friend, etc, who has a hearing problem, they will benefit greatly from this Training Session. All those attending will have a certificate which can be used in the professional environment as evidence of training

Mayor of Bournemouth Presents Golden Key to Bee a Bug Westbourne Franchise The Worshipful The Mayor of Bournemouth, Councillor Phil Stanley-Watts has presented the ‘Golden Key to Bee a Bug Westbourne’. The children’s soft play café was formally handed over to franchisee Carole EverndenBerguerand, who is now the new face of Bee a Bug’s flagship venue in Westbourne, Bournemouth. The Mayor’s presentation signified two important milestones for the local business: the launch of ‘Bee a Bug Franchising Ltd’ and Bee a Bug’s first Franchise Awarding Event. Carly Peters, Director of Bee a Bug Franchising Ltd, created the soft play cafe two years ago after drawing on her own experience as a new mum. The venue offers children and their parents, or guardians, a wide range of activities, parties, exciting oneoff events and a weekly timetable of educational and fun classes to enjoy together, in a clean, safe and comfortable environment. Carole Evernden-Berguerand graduated from business school in Switzerland and is committed to upholding the high levels of service established by Carly Peters. Having worked as a supervisor in the venue for the past two years, she has a very good understanding of her customers needs. Carole, a Swiss French National, has also been responsible for running the French classes at Bee a Bug, which have become one of the most popular classes with approximately 14 children regularly attending. Carole is working hard to keep Bee a Bug’s services fresh and exciting and has a number of new events, classes and charitable plans in the pipeline. Carole comments “I am currently working with local charities to create a strategy for fundraising and events. With a background in teaching I am also very passionate about bringing further educational services to our customers.”

Bee a Bug Westbourne is designed for children 0-5 years and is open Monday to Friday, 10am – 5pm and Saturday 9am – 3pm (closed on Sundays for private parties). Information on prices, class timetables and children’s birthday parties can be found on the website: www.beeabug.co.uk Customer, Sarah Schiel, held her son’s third birthday party at Bee a Bug “He enjoyed it so much he asked for his fourth birthday to be held there. It is a great venue as parents can relax with full sight of their children, but the children can have the freedom to enjoy themselves in an unpressurised play environment. The staff were exceptionally helpful, the food was beyond my expectations and the party bags were really well thought out. As a parent I felt it was great value for money and completely stress free. The only think I had to do was invite the guests!”

Ratty returns Water voles are now being spotted regularly at Moors Valley Country Park, near Ringwood thanks to the success of a long-term reintroduction programme initiated and overseen by Rangers from East Dorset Countryside Management Service. The first water vole release in the Park took place last summer following an extensive period of riverbank clearance and monitoring for predatory mink. Their successful survival led to a second release this summer, with 120 water voles joining those already established in the river systems, introducing new bloodlines and a boost to the existing population. Th e p ro je ct h as in vo lv ed a h u g e commitment in terms of time and effort. This has come not just from the Rangers, b u t al so fro m th e n i n e ad j ac en t landowners, who have worked together to provide suitable habitats and crucially, monitor the rivers for mink activity. The idea to reintroduce the water vole to Moors Valley Country Park was first conceived back in 2009. Local people fondly remembered sightings of Kenneth Graham’s iconic Wind in the Willows character in the Crane and Moors river system, and the Rangers were keen to bring ‘Ratty’ back to the Park. But with water vole populations struggling to survive across the country the conditions had to be exactly right. “The water vole is Britain’s fastest declining mammal,” said Senior Countryside Ranger, Matt Reeks. “And that decline has been caused principally by loss of habitat and predation by North American mink.

The team were helped by the UK’s leading water vole conservation specialist and breeder, Derek Gow, and also benefited from the advice and experience of the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust, the inventors of a simple but highly effective ‘mink raft’. “Six thousand mink were released by animal activists from a local fur firm back in 1998 which had a huge impact on the local water vole population. We wanted to make sure our returning water voles would be safe,” said Matt. “The mink rafts have been designed to attract curious mammals, and once ‘on board’ they walk over a clay pad which very neatly records their tracks.” Eleven rafts were built and positioned throughout the local river system

After a year of regular monitoring they knew the area was mink free, and the reintroduction could go ahead. The mink rafts have also played an important role in confirming the survival of the first released population of water voles, regularly revealing the water voles’ distinctive star-shaped four-toed front foot. Otter tracks were also spotted regularly and there is good evidence that they will catch and kill mink. Otters will also eat the voles, but as they cannot enter the water vole burrows the two species can coexist and their presence is confirmation of the quality of both the water in the river system and riverbank habitat. Whilst the mink rafts will continue to be mon itored, Park visitors are now reporting their own water vole sightings to the Visitor Centre at Moors Valley, and the Rangers have also managed to take

some photographs on both the river banks and in the water. Recent surveys have found some well-established colonies in some of the quieter areas of the Park. “We really couldn’t be happier,” said Clare Gronow, Countryside Manager at Moors Valley. “As the third most visited country park in England we try to strike a careful balance between managing our visitors and ensuring our wildlife thrives. Of course it’s early days, but it’s wonderful to know that the water vole is now establishing itself again here at Moors Valley and that the work of so many people has been successful. As guardians of the Park we couldn’t be more pleased that we have been able to play a part in maintaining that rich biodiversity”.
