Hello Bournemouth, Dare I say it but we are fast approaching that festive time of year… Indeed we are looking forward to taking our Hayden to see Father Christmas at Paultons Park for his Birthday this year. As he will be 9 I reckon this is my last chance! Imagine my surprise a few weeks ago when I got a phone call from Father Christmas - it turned out to be a lovely local man who has played the part every season for over 60 years! I am sure I had that same ‘trip of the heart’ when he said who he was. Do we ever really grow up? As you might be thinking of opening your doors to the family… or perhaps escaping to other parts… perhaps a few things need doing around the house or garden? If you are anything like us, ‘spare’ time seems to be getting less and less. Why not let someone else do the work for you? You will find The Bournemouth Directory full of local tradespeople who are more than willing to give you a hand to make this year’s special season a great success. From house/shed clearance to create more space in the house, fitted furniture to make the most of what space you do have, domestic cleaners to make things a little neater and tidier and painters to spruce things up a bit. There are also plumbers and electricians to ensure all your facilities are in shape, as well as health and slimming consultants to help keep your body in good order too! We also have a number of interesting articles this month. Morris the stag is getting frisky at the New Forest Wildlife Park! There are finance tips with regard to credit rates on page 14 and some pointers for growing fruit in your own garden on page 18. If you are one for enjoying your cooking, there is a recipe on page 12 that sounds scrumptious! The winner of the tickets to the Sensational 60’s Experience last month was Mrs Julie Pearce of Huntly Road. Well done to you! Here’s to a good month of November,

Debbie

Talking about Wildlife

Talking about wildlife...

Winter Wildlife The month is November. The air feels cooler and the nights are drawing in. The leaves react to this change as they transform into vivid shades of amber, red and brown. These coloured leaves are a sign for us and for wildlife that winter is approaching. Summer migrant birds who visit the UK for summer have migrated back ‘home’, heading to warmer, milder countries. However, winter migrants now appear from the north, east and even some from the south; look out for bramblings, redwings, fieldfares and jays. There are several things you can do this month to prepare your garden for winter. As natural water sources begin to freeze over, birdbaths become a vital source of drinking water. It is important that you clean the birdbath regularly to avoid the spread of disease. Make sure to top it up and remove any sheets of ice! Food will soon be scarce as berries are over and the ground hardens, preventing the b ir d s f r o m c a tc h in g worms. You may choose from a range of bird foods, but fruit is equally valuable. Birds can also eat household scraps such as grated cheese, pinhead oatmeal and black sunflower seeds. There are special models of bird feeder to keep out rats and

BD November 2012 page 8

squirrels, but birds such as robins, greenfinches and bramblings prefer their food on a bird table. If you do use a bird table, keep it away from cover or high vegetation; predators will launch themselves onto feeding birds if the table is within reach. Hedgehogs should be hibernating around now and if you have a hedgehog box you may already have a visitor. Hiding one under a pile of leaves has been reported as particularly successful. Do check any piles before making a bonfire as a hedgehog could already be tucked up in there! If you have a pond, it is important the pond does not become completely frozen. Make sure there are areas of habitat on the ponds edge, such as logs and rough vegetation, as these can be used as hibernation sites by small reptiles. Judy Godsall

A weight off my shoulders… and other places! Chris' blog on the CLEAN 9 part of Forever’s NUTRILEAN programme: Days 1 and 2 Breakfast - two pills, Aloe Vera drink and water Snack - two different pills from bees Lunch - two pills, Aloe Vera drink and water and a milk shake, two more bee pills Dinner - two pills, Aloe Vera drink, two bee pills Evening - more Aloe Vera drink Days 3 to 9 Breakfast - two pills, some Aloe Vera drink and water and a milk shake Snack - two different pills from bees Lunch - two pills, some Aloe Vera drink and water and a very small milk shake, two more bee pills Dinner - two pills, two bee pills and a 600 calorie meal Why do it in the first place? The obvious benefit to taking on something like this is the weight loss - I keep pretty fit by going regularly to a gym, but as 50 approaches (alarmingly quickly) I find it increasingly hard to maintain a weight I am happy with. So the promise of half a stone or more in nine days is appealing. Also, being a bit of a long term sceptic about all things ‘alternative’, I was keen to give it a fair try. And lastly, I wanted to let Tracy see firsthand the effect the process has on someone other than herself - so when she talks about it to her customers, it’s both from a subjective and an objective viewpoint. Day 1 dawned with mixed feelings of excitement and dread - and a soon to be regretted six mile run in the gym. The first two days of the detox involve cleansing, no food and wise advice to only gently exercise. The Aloe Vera drink tastes like some type of hospital surface cleaner from which the only relief you get is water and a couple of bee

BD November 2012 page 16

pollen pills. Lunch comes quickly - and you get a milk shake. Which tastes quite good, is pleasantly enjoyable and surprisingly filling add a couple of bee pollen pills and it feels like fine dining. My second regrettable act of the day is to follow lunch with a four and half hour round of golf in the warm sunshine, on the hilliest course in Surrey! The sense of being full might last quite well if you sit in a comfortable chair and browse through food magazines, but by the 18th hole supported by a single bottle of water, I was ready to eat the flag, clubs and fattier bits of the three guys who made up our four ball. Home to more hospital floor cleaner and whatever bees don’t seem to need anymore compressed into a disappointing and very small pill. It is about now you realise that your family spend their entire lives eating. Seemingly endless processions into to kitchen to fill up plates and bowls become the backdrop to your day. But don’t worry; you can have 8 ounces of water before bed. Bedtime at last. The odd thing is I do feel pretty good. Day 2. I will admit that the balance between excitement and dread is less evenly spread this morning - but it’s a Saturday and I plan to be active and not think about what I am doing, and it’s only 36 hours or so until I get to eat a proper meal. Knowledge is a fine thing, and I don’t go for a six mile run and I don’t arrange to play golf. I also don’t get to go for a curry and three pints of Kingfisher. And as I go to bed I notice that I actually feel really good. Day 3. I am not a religious man, but I will admit that I woke this morning feeling a sense of there being a greater force at work, guiding me. I now feel really, really well, and I get tea today! I have had a lot of teas in my life -

But my 345 calorie Chicken Tikka W ei g ht Wa tch er s m eal w il l b e remembered for a long, long time - yes it had enough salt in it to make the slugs in the garden wince - but it filled my very empty stomach up so completely that it is right here, right now that I saw the light. If I eat less, I will weigh less - And you do feel like you, and you alone, have discovered this amazing fact - and for the next 6 days of the detox you will bore everyone you meet with your discovery. The rest of the time is easy, because you now believe in what you are doing. Tutting at anyone with their hand in the biscuit jar, raising your eyebrows at that second helping of ice cream and smacking your lips as you digest another glass of water are just the outward demonstrations of your new position as a living, breathing and downright unapproachable angel!! Day 10. It’s over. Woke up, unfolded my ever growing wings and spurned a fry-up for another floor

cleaner/bee session. I shall not stray. Went out to my brother-in-law's birthday - I might have a pint, I might not, I have earned it. Not sure I had earned the right to eight pints of Fosters followed by an obscene and frenzied attack on an unsuspecting Cadbury Cream Egg Easter egg - which I devoured in its entirety in less than five minutes. I think I ate my halo and my wings too..... But the next day I was back in the land of the restrained and smug, and am intent on staying there, but for all those around me I think I’ll drop the evangelical bit. Weighed in at the end and had lost 10lbs. I feel and look thinner. I go to sleep quicker and for longer. My stomach feels great and I think I will look at food and beer slightly differently from now on. I am now drinking the floor cleaner by choice - and have discovered it comes in slightly less objectionable flavours. Well worth the money, and the experience.

We’re also delighted to welcome back o n e o f t he be s t P a n to v i l l a i n s Bournemouth has seen in recent years, Su Pollard – last with us for the 2009 Panto season – as Carabosse. Also returning from the cast of Jack and the Beanstalk is Wave 105 presenter Kate Weston as Good Fairy. However, our all-star cast doesn’t end there, as they’re joined by Asa Elliott from ITV’s Benidorm as the Prince and of course, no Panto would be complete without a dame, with Nurse Nelly to be played by Colin Baker of Doctor Who fame.

Raging hormones make stag Morris a threat to all males! Raging hormones and the call of Nature are making Morris the red deer stag at New Forest Wildlife Park extremely frisky. It’s the annual rutting season and Morris has been squaring up to all males, even his human male keepers and the massive European bison who share his enclosure. “He can’t think of anything else,” said New Forest Wildlife Park Animal Manager Jason Palmer. “He’ll do anything to protect his girls and even though he’s the only red deer stag in the park, he is still very aggressive to males of any other species. “His hormones are really raging and he’s stopped eating. He needs to prove himself, but he can’t fight other red deer stags, so he’ll have a go at anything else. He was eyeing me up and making threatening gestures the other day so we’ll have to keep away from him for the time being. We’ve also separated him from the bison to avoid any trouble.” The rutting season for red deer usually takes place for around three months, between October and January, depending on what part of the country the deer are located in. During the rut, or breeding season, red deer stags in the wild return to the hinds’ home ranges and compete for breeding access, squaring up to other male competitors in elaborate displays of dominance, including roaring and fighting. Whoever wins the fight becomes the

BD November 2012 page 28

dominant stag and has exclusive access to the female hinds. The red deer normally share an enclosure and field with the park’s three male European bison, who are part of a captive breeding programme for endangered species. European bison used to be native to Britain and would normally cohabit with red deer in the wild. “Morris has nine hinds in his enclosure and he has no real competition, but he can’t help himself,” said Jason. “He has to use up the aggression and energy someh ow, so h e keep s b ellowin g constantly and adding long grass and twigs and moss to his antlers to make

His antlers are about 14 points now and weigh about 5.5 kilos, so we’re not going to take him on.” Three-year-old Morris is lucky, since only stags over five years old tend to mate in the wild, despite being sexually active much earlier. In woodland populations, hinds over one year old usually give birth to a single calf* after an eight-month gestation period, between mid May to mid July each year. New Forest Wildlife Park has several species of otters, deer and owls, including the endangered giant otter, as well as lynx, foxes, wallabies, European bison, wolves, wild boar, ferrets, pine marten, polecats, harvest mice, badgers and more. The park is involved in international breeding programmes for endangered species and also works with the RSPCA to rescue injured or abandoned animals.

29

There are timed animal feeding sessions throughout the day, animal encounters on certain days and keeper talks about the amazing wildlife. The park is owned by Carol and Roger Heap, who are dedicated to wildlife conservation. Carol and Roger also run the Chestnut Centre Conservation and Wildlife Park in Derbyshire and Battersea Park Children’s Zoo in London. *Red deer young are called calves. The New Forest Wildlife Park is at Deerleap Lane, Longdown, Marchwood, Southampton, Hampshire, SO41 4UH.
