Local business receives #SBS award from Theo Paphitis Approved Family (AFF), based in Poole, received a business boost from TV Dragons’ Den star, Theo Paphitis. Jane Hancox, founder of AFF who received her award in Birmingham this month, tweeted Theo about her business during ‘Small Business Sunday’, an initiative set up by Theo that runs weekly. Theo retweeted Jane’s message to his 260,000 followers and as a result, the business winners (www.approvedfamilyfriendly.com) has 200 more followers and extra orders for the Families’ Trustmark award. They are also profiled on a new website (www.theopaphitissbs.com) that is exclusive to Small Business Sunday. See Travelling Trends Fashion Show for Hadland Foundation The Hadland Foundation, a local charity that provides help to ‘families in need’ will be holding a Fashion Show on Friday 27th March at Corpus Christi Church Hall in Boscombe. The Travelling Trends Fashion Show will give ladies the opportunity to see this season’s high street fashion on the catwalk, try it on, buy it at bargain prices and raise money for the Hadland Foundation. Paul Reade, Hadland Foundation manager comments: “The Fashion Show will be a great evening out, with clothes available to try on and purchase on the night.”
The Fashion Show is a key fundraising event for the Hadland Foundation and William Thompson Solicitors LLP, Christchurch are sponsoring the event and covering the costs of hiring the hall and the drinks upon arrival. Ann – Let’s talk Bond themes?
Blake – “It’s down to the fans and us, they tell us what they like us to sing, and so it’s all based on that, but also what proves popular in concerts too.” Ann – Eight years together, still enjoying it? Blake – “More than ever really, I mean now there are just the three of us, it’s like a new beginning really, and so it’s meant looking at things afresh and new directions.“ Ann – Some famous names on the new album too... tough choice to make? Blake – We have Camilla Kerslake, Chris Robshaw, Olga Kurylenko, Rebecca Newman, so many great names, and wonderful singers... We all feel blessed that they agreed to join us, and we hope all the fans love it too.” Ann – Do you all have choices, and who else would you love to duet with? Blake – “Barbra Streisand would be good, as well as someone like Lady Ga Ga I think mixing it up is the key to keeping the style fresh and fun.” Ann – You recently appeared at the famous White House in Washington?
Blake – “We all want to record a Bond theme, I mean we all look reasonable, and think it’s about time a British group had a crack at it, so why not us. We need someone to champion us, so will you do it Ann?” Ann – At the launch, you had some big named guests too – Cameron Mackintosh, and stars of Call the Midwife... Do you get nervous when they are in the audience? Blake – “Yes and now of course if Sir Cameron wants to offer all us leads in one of his wonderful musicals, then of course that would be tricky for us, but we know he is a great fan of our work.” Ann – What are the typical Blake fans? Blake – “Well Stylish, lovers of good music, and above all, impeccable taste (laugh)” Ann – What is next then gentlemen? Porsche Centre Bournemouth chooses local John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation as their ‘Charity of the Year’ The John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF) is delighted to announce that it has been selected as ‘Charity of the Year’ by the prestigious Porsche Centre Bournemouth. Neil Lines, Centre Principal, has pledged a year of support for the charity which will strengthen their investment in local young people and help to raise the profile of the foundation across the region. The JTYAF which was set up in memory of Lt John ‘JT’ Thornton RM, from Ferndown, who was killed in southern Afghanistan on 30th March 2008, has allocated over £75,000 to support the ambitions of young people in 2015. Neil commented, “The team at Porsche Bournemouth are delighted to have the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation as our 2015 charity partner. The charity works tirelessly to support local young people, and enjoys an outstanding level of success in nurturing the many talents from the Bournemouth area. Talking about Wildlife...
Would you go down to the woods today? Now that springtime is upon us, take a walk through the Dorset woodlands. Enjoy the sight of butterflies and birds; soak up the smell of bluebells and tree bark; and listen to the sound of birdsong. The woods can be mysterious, even frightening when early morning mists obscure the path or the moonlight casts strange shadows. However, the woodlands are also friendly places, home to a kaleidoscope of wildlife. They are a refuge for town and city dwellers who enjoy peace and tranquility, and home to some of the most important species in our ecosystem - trees. Since the beginning of time, we have admired trees for the longevity and their majestic appearances. They have been used as symbols of fertility, growth and resurrection; they have appeared in myths and folklore; and they have played an important role in religious narratives. Trees are fundamental to our wellbeing. They provide us with food, oxygen and numerous resources such as wood and coal. Furthermore, they have a positive effect on our mental health. They have been shown to reduce the effects of anxiety, ADHD and mental fatigue. Trees also have a positive effect on the environment. They absorb water, which helps to reduce flooding, and cleanse the soil from dangerous chemicals and pollutants. Additionally, they filter the air (you can spot clean air in woodland by the growth of lichen, a green moss-like plant which colonises trees) and absorb carbon dioxide, thereby combating the greenhouse effect. Trees even help to reduce the temperatures in large cities as they deflect sunlight.

Giving practical help and hope to those who have nothing
Our aim is to give practical help and hope to those who have nothing through the distribution to new homeless people of rucksacks containing many essential items and all rough sleepers will receiving clothing, sleeping bags, etc as Agencies ask for them. Our emphasis along with those of our Agencies is in getting people off the streets and as an incentive if rough sleepers accept Agency help and move into accommodation we provide a basket of healthy food, a washing up bowl of toiletries and a bucket of household essentials. We also try to encourage a daily structure and empowerment through poetry, artwork, singing, sport, etc. We are in the process of getting Charity status Donations can be made of essential items or cash. Essential Items: Rucksacks • Clothing, pants, socks, shirts, jumpers, gloves and scarves • Toiletries, toilet paper, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, combs / hair brushes, wipes and tissues • Other useful items such as pens, notepads, washing powder tablets and torches. How can you help? • Organise Fund Raising Events, such as raffles, tombola, cake stalls, etc and donate the proceeds. • Clothing, second hand, clean / reasonable quality, or new can be donated and stored in our secure facility pending its inclusion in a rucksack. The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Nellie was ready for a break this month. After all it was half term and Hayden was off school, so what better excuse than to ‘get away’ for a few days. We live in such a gorgeous area it was difficult to choose where to go. Nellie eventually decided to take us just along the coast, through the New Forest, to the Shorefield Country Park near Milford on Sea. As the weather has been a bit unpredictable, and still a bit on the chilly side, we booked a small chalet with heating and Nellie parked herself proudly outside. I have to say that Nellie did well, the chalet was really good value for money and just what we needed for a few days off. There are some rather grand looking log cabins as well as impressive caravans on site with hot tubs outside, so maybe we will try one of those next time? Anyway what we had was perfect for what we wanted. We did arrive a bit early, all very keen to have our time off, so Nellie and her whistling kettle provided us with a lovely cuppa, while we waited for

Of course Hayden was very excited about the pool, so once we were settled in and bags were unpacked, (were we really only staying for a few days??) off we set for the leisure facilities. While Hayden practiced his hand stands at the deep end and generally glided around like I will never be able to do, I had a relaxed steam bath, sauna and jacuzzi. Much more fun… at least at 50! A caravan park from this viewpoint is ideal - it caters for all ages. What I liked about this park also is the setting. Located in a wonderful forest of trees, much wildlife, (I am sure we saw a woodpecker) and fields, yet the sea is literally ten minutes walk away. Saturday was glorious with blue skies and those well known English fleecy white clouds. Love it. We marched off for the coast, doing a short Geocache enroute. The ‘treasure’ this time was tiny and Stephen was the winner, finding it very well hidden in a bench.
27 Once we got to the sea there was a large banner warning us not to swim. Though it was sunny it was still a little chilly, so that made me smile. I then looked more closely at the banner and was fascinated by the iron sea defences that were very dangerously placed under the water at this time. That got me thinking about our coast line. This beach is full of pebbles and the waves were crashing vociferously onto them. If you close your eyes it is really quite dramatic. There is in fact a lot of work having to be done due to erosion, moving landscapes and these old sea defences. I discovered that the rock in this area is softer than that near Old Harry Rocks and there is a whole Shoreline Management Plan to help preserve our coastline all the way from Hurst Spit at Milford on Sea to Durlston Head near Swanage, including the bays in Poole and Bournemouth. That is all quite an undertaking! It is surprising really what we take for granted. The whole concept got me thinking about old times, the future and life in general, but that is a bit deep for the Adventures of Nellie! We had a whale of a time, not literally as we were not allowed to swim, throwing stones in

No Swimming?? I was so looking forward... the water, running enthusiastically away from the waves as they thundered towards us. Hayden got pretty wet and thought that was hysterical. He couldn’t stop laughing. There are many beach huts along this stretch and some are delightfully painted while others are quite dilapidated. From what I read there is a whole question over these English Seaside getaways and their safety in this area. I certainly would be sorry to see them go. One local artist was collecting smooth pebbles for her next project, coming down from her little wooden hideaway onto the beach with her bucket. How exiting. Finally we made it to…the café! It was perfect especially as it has a park for the children. “Needles Eye Café” it is called, obviously due to its stunning views of the coast and indeed The Needles on the Isle of Wight. After a good lunch, rest and relaxation, we set off back to the chalet and Nellie waiting patiently for us. We didn’t get to Hurst Castle and will have to save that for another trip. The fresh air, walk and wonderful views were just what we needed. What an amazing place we live in. So, where will Nellie go next? By Debbie Corney

Naturally good... Apricot and passion fruit ‘flan de Queso’ with spiced roasted pears
Ingredients for 4-6 servings: For the flan 120ml full fat milk 240ml double cream 100g full fat cream cheese 2 free range eggs 8 large moist dried apricots 1 tbsp honey One passion fruit 2 tbsp lemon juice For the roasted pears 2 pears Pinch ground cinnamon Pinch ground ginger 1 tbsp unsalted butter

1. Preheat the oven to 300F/150c. 2. Place the milk and dried apricots into a small saucepan and bring to the boil. Then remove from the heat and leave to rest for 20 minutes to let the apricots soak up some moisture and become plump. 3. Prepare the passion fruit by scraping out the seeds into a sieve above a bowl, use a metal spoon to scrape the seeds against the sieve to remove as much of the juice as possible, discard the seeds and add the juice to the mixture. 4. Place all of the ingredients for the flan into a blender and blitz on full speed for 2 minutes until all of the ingredients are well combined and smooth, pass this mixture through a sieve into a jug and then use this to fill 4 ramekins (or 6 ramekins if you want smaller portions). 5. Place the ramekins into a large roasting tray and pour in enough hot, but not boiling, water to come halfway up their outsides. (This is called a bain-marie or water bath). 6. Place the bain-marie onto the center shelf of the oven being careful not to spill any water into the ramekins which will ruin the flans (a tip to make life easier is to place the baking dish with the ramekins halfway into the oven before adding the water to the dish). 7. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until the custards are just set but still a bit wobbly in the middle. Remove the ramekins from the water and set aside to cool to room temperature. Chill until needed for at least 3 hours but preferably overnight. 8. When you are ready to serve the flans, prepare the roasted pears. Peel, core and slice the pears and place onto a baking sheet. Sprinkle the pears with the ground ginger and cinnamon and add the butter. Place into a preheated oven at 350F/180c for approximately 20 minutes until the pears are soft and the edges are turning golden brown and caramelized. 9. Spoon the roasted pears on top of the flans and serve.

PLOT
Gain the upper hand now!
Spring should really be on it’s way by the end of this month and there’ll be plenty of jobs to keep you busy on your plot. There’s nothing quite like sowing seeds and the thrill of watching those first tiny seedlings appearing just a week or two later. Weather permitting the soil should be warm enough to be sowing outdoors in March. Your new seedlings will need all the help that you can give them if they are to flourish so don’t forget the weeding and pest control too! Jobs for March:Prepare beds for sowing by raking level when the soil is dry enough. Get a supply of containers and fill with compost ready for sowing (supermarket plastic trays containers are handy to reuse for this!) Make sure you have all the seeds you need and sort them into the order that you’ll sow them in. Plant first early potatoes later in the month. Keep on top of the weeding and pest control. Sow carrots, peas, parsnips, lettuce and radishes.
There’s no doubt that the weather during the first part of the year lived up to our expectations of a month of extremes - with mild temperatures and homes and gardens hammered by incredible rainfall. Hopefully March should see the weather settling down and Spring truly starting to emerge. Most seed packets give you some guidelines as to which month/or months are best to sow in but personally I think that it’d be a lot more helpful if they gave a little information about the temperature required, not to mention just how long germination is likely to take. Soil temperatures of at least 6º are needed for most seeds - if you don’t want to guess at this you can get a soil thermometer to check. Don’t forget that by using products such as fleece, or cloches, over your beds you can raise the temperature. Some seeds, such as parsnips, are notoriously slow to germinate taking up to 3 weeks for seedlings to appear - a good idea with slow starters like these is to sow quick growing crops such as radishes on either side of the row. This will help mark the rows out until your parsnips appear and the radishes will quickly be grown and ready to harvest. Take note also of the depth that the different seeds should be sown at - too shallow and they’ll either blow away or be eaten by the birds, too deep and you may bury them alive! Try to space seeds evenly, though if you sow too many you can thin out the weaker seedlings after they appear. Do remember that with many crops it
is better to sow just a few and then sow again in a few weeks time to avoid having too many ready to harvest all at once. Salad crops such as lettuce will bolt if left too long, and other vegetables which may have a short harvesting period can be enjoyed for much longer if you save the seed and sow a few in succession every few weeks. As the soil warms up for your new crops so it also warms up nicely for the weeds about now! For many people part of the attraction of growing your own is eating chemical free produce and organic methods of pest control will therefore be preferred. Little and often is best - take a quick walk around the veg patch each morning and hand pick any emerging weeds. Hoeing also works well and if you are careful not to let weeds set seed you’ll avoid a long-term problem. Of course the situation isn’t helped by the fact that your patch is likely to have large amounts of bare soil on it between widely spaced rows at this time of year. Some crops, such as potatoes will obligingly grow to ultimately block out the light and deter weeks, but if you’re really having problems then think about putting down a thick, organic, mulch to cover the bare soil. Slugs will also emerge to attack your young seedlings - there’s no end of organic ways to do battle from hand picking at night and beer traps to watering in nematodes. Strike early and gain the upper hand!

LEWIS Car Insurance Car insurance prices have fallen 40% over the past two years, according to the AA. But with a rise in fraudulent claims, its latest index predicts an increase of up to 8% in 2015; others think 10% is possible. So to help you drive down costs, let me answer your most common questions… Q. Is this only something you can do if you’re at renewal? A. No, everyone should be checking their price right now, even if you only signed up to a new deal a few months ago. Unless you’ve claimed, you can usually cancel a policy for a fee of around £50 and get a refund for the rest of the year (though you won’t earn no claims for that year). It’s worth checking if it’s worth it. Q. My renewal’s only six weeks away, should I just wait? A. It’s likely if you did try and cancel and get a new policy now, the cancellation fee will diminish any savings – so that’s a bit futile. Yet there is another trick – www.aviva.co.uk, www.postoffice.co.uk and www.lv.com quotes last 60 days, so why not grab them now and you’re effectively locking in those prices in case they rise in the meantime. Q. Are the savings that great? Can’t you just auto-renew? A. Never just auto-renew without checking elsewhere, often it just lets insurers smack a price rise on you, as it knows apathy means many will keep paying more and more. I’m not saying auto-renewing will never be your cheapest option, just that it should never be done without checking and comparing elsewhere first. Q. So it’s just a question of getting on a comparison site? A. That’s the route many use, but there are steps to really kick it up. It’s important to understand that there’s no one cheapest provider, so it’s a case of following a system. Never just do one comparison, you need a benchmark of a few comparisons to find out where’s cheapest. There’s a system to follow fully explained at www.mse.me/ carinsurance. In a nutshell… Combine comparison sites. They don’t all cover the same insurers, so combining a number of sites is the best way to really make a meaningful saving. My current top picks for a typical driver are www.moneysupermarket.com, www.confused.com, and www.comparethemarket.com Check insurers that comparisons miss. Comparison sites let you compare 100s of insurers quickly but they don’t capture the entire market. The biggies, including Aviva, www.directline.com and www.zurich.co.uk only offer their products directly. More than one car at home? Comparison sites can only cope
with one car at once so don’t include multi-car discounts. Therefore you should always manually check those that offer it. The big one is www.admiral.com multi-car, but www.churchill.com, www.directline.com and www.privilege.com also offer it. I’m not saying they’ll win, but that you should check. Difficult to insure? Use a broker. If you’ve difficult circumstances (eg, past bans or big accidents) that make getting insurance difficult, a comparison site is less likely to help as these are mainly focused on ‘normal’ policies. You may be better off finding a local broker - see the British Insurance Brokers’ Association website (www.biba.org.uk), as these can sometimes find a cheaper deal for you. Q. So it’s all pretty straightforward? A. Ah if only. Common-sense doesn't always do the job… - Third party's not always cheapest. Merely selecting comprehensive makes some insurers see you as a lower risk. So always check both. - Adding a responsible second driver can cut your costs. This can bring down your risk average and price ― of course, it must be someone who may drive your car. As Mazzyb5 tweeted: "Took your advice and added mum ― saved £500." - Tweaking your job description can cut costs. I'm not saying lap dancers should call themselves cabinet ministers (or vice versa, heaven forbid). But these days many people have such specific job descriptions car insurers don't list them, as Fabsternation tweeted: "Thanks. Changing from creative director to marketing manager saved £300." See my fun car insurance job picker tool www.mse.me/jobpicker. - Beware paying monthly. A monthly payment plan for your insurance is essentially a high-interest loan. For example, if your premium is £1,000 but you’re paying an APR of 25%, your insurance will actually cost £1,140 once you factor in the interest. So either pay in full, or if you can't afford it, use a credit card with a lower APR or better still, a 0% credit card for spending, ensuring your repayments are big enough to clear it within a year. Q. And any special tips for young drivers? A. With the average premium for a 17-22-year-old at an eyewatering £1,194 per year, young car drivers can be priced out ― all the techniques above will help, but if you’re not getting there, check ‘pay how you drive’ (telematics) this involves a device being fitted inside your car that monitors your actions behind the wheel.
