Dear Westbourne, Welcome to the FIRST edition of The Westbourne Directory! This will be delivered every third month to you, the residents of Westbourne, as part of The Bournemouth Directory Series. We sincerely hope you find your local magazine useful. If there is anything that you would like to add to the Directory, please feel free to call or email me. Every month ‘Nellie’, our rather oversized Dorset Publications Campervan, with her long black skirts to cover up her large thighs, takes us for a day or weekend out. This month she took us on a ‘Geo Cache’ at Hengistbury Head and you can read all about it inside. Great day! Assessing patients’ needs All patients on our wards now have their condition monitored via an electronic system, known as VitalPAC nurse. Using a handheld device, similar to an iPhone, nurses record and monitor a patient’s

Patricia Ellis and her mum Virginia stopped by the Carers’ Café recently observations, for example blood pressure and heart rate. If a patient’s condition deteriorates the system automatically triggers a response from an appropriately skilled clinician, enabling a quicker clinical response, improving safety and enhancing patient care. It enables staff to prioritise treatment for the sickest patients. Listening and learning Listening to you and learning from your experiences is really important. This includes hearing from those who may find it difficult to have a voice. Every week we hold a Carers’ Café where carers and relatives can share their experiences with a qualified nurse over a coffee. We also have a range of support information and resources available for you. We are in the main atrium of the Royal Bournemouth Hospital from 1.30-2.30pm and look forward to seeing you. We have also invited local independent consumer watchdog Healthwatch Dorset to collect people’s views on our hospital and its services. Healthwatch will be at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital a couple of days a month for the next six months. The first two dates are Wednesday 5 March from 9am to 1pm and Friday 14 March from 12pm to 4pm when they’ll be talking to people in the main entrance area and main outpatients department. Barn Owls
Barns owls are amongst the most beautiful birds in Britain. Although some barn owls are brown in colour, the majority have golden and silver-grey feathers and white under-parts. They also have bright-white, heart-shaped faces, which resemble masks. Contrary to popular belief, these mystical birds do not hoot; instead, they hiss and emit long, unsettling shrieks. Barn owls consume small mammals (mice, voles and shrews), which they hunt from the air above. These striking birds are formidable hunters, but unfortunately the recent bad weather may have a negative impact on their ability to hunt: their wings are not waterproof, but designed with tiny serrations on their flight feathers so they are able to sweep through the air soundlessly. This unnerving ability has earned them the title ‘Ghost Owl.’ In addition, their sensitive hearing enables them to pinpoint the smallest sound whilst they are in flight. Ordinarily, barn owls hunt at dusk or dawn, although they will occasionally hunt during the day and at night (they do not require sight to hunt). Barn owls favour the open country. They will venture into the woodland if necessary, but prefer to hunt along the edges of woods. Barn owls breed when food is abundant. Ordinarily, they lay 4 to 7 eggs, 2-3 days apart.
Each egg will hatch after 31-32 days incubation. Females will sit on their young for an additional 3 weeks after they have hatched. During this time, their mate will bring food to the nest. Barn owls were once Britain’s most common owl species; however, the numbers have declined by up to 70% in recent years. This is due to the growing use of rodenticides, which are highly toxic. There are an estimated 4,000 pairs in the UK today, but there is concern that numbers are ever decreasing, and in recent years, the wet summers and cold winters have made conditions difficult for them. Dorset Wildlife Trust hosts a barn owl nest webcam, so you can see these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. Vdub At The Pub Festival 2014
Friday 16th May – Sunday 18th May 2014 – Wimborne, Dorset 2014’s Vdub At The Pub Festival promises to be bigger and better than ever before, with a great new line-up of live music, acoustic artists and live DJ’s. We will of course be bringing back our ever popular Show & Shine competition, with this year’s classes including: Best Beatle, Best Type 2 Bay, Best Split, Best Type 25 Air & Water, Best Type 4 Van, Best Newie, Best Golf/Polo, Best Other, Best Paint, Best Rat and Best Overall, for our Volkswagen lovers to show off their wheels. Our line-up of music this year will see the return of Vdub veteran Si Genaro, (recently becoming a national personality after his quirky performance on BBC’s The VoiceUK) Saturday Sun, (in January being listed as one of The Guardian’s new band of the day) and The Crematics, (having previously supported the likes of Bastille and The Rizzle Kicks) just to name a few. As well as live music all weekend, we are kicking off the show this year with Friday night’s DJ night, where 2014 Vdub festivals goers can start their weekend by dancing the night away. The first Vdub at the Pub took place back in 2008 at Drusilla’s Inn in Dorset and was the first time the festivals creator John had combined engines, beer and live music. Dubbers came from far and wide to Drusilla’s Inn for 2 years before the numbers grew so high that it was time to find a larger show ground. In 2010 Vdub moved to the grounds of Wimborne Town Football Club, where it still runs today. Last year’s festival was a 3 day event, catering for everybody’s needs, with live music all weekend, DJ’s playing into the night and local Brewery Dorset Piddle Beer holding a mini beer Festival in the live music tent. We also had the Dorset Stormtroopers in attendance all weekend entertaining the crowds. We sold out our camping spaces a week before the festival and with the help of local land owners we managed to increase our camping facilities and open and second camping field for the second year running! The 2014 show will be our best yet. We hope to see you there!

A smoke alarm without batteries is ‘a useless piece of plastic’ That is the message from Group Manager Karen Adams, Head of Prevention at Dorset Fire and Rescue Service. Karen leads a team of firefighters and officers, who are taking DFRS’s safety message out into the community, with a particular focus on educating vulnerable and hard to reach groups. When someone dies in a fi re, it is always upsetting. At Dorset Fire and Rescue Service, our aim is to reduce all preventable fire deaths to zero. We want to see every home in Dorset with a working smoke alarm and that means testing your smoke alarms every week! With the clock change fast approaching, when you go around your home changing the time on all your clocks, take the time to test your smoke alarms too! Karen said: “We provide a FREE home safety check service. This means fi refi ghters and DFRS staff visit residents in their homes and if appropriate, fit or replace smoke alarms, advise on the use of candles, unattended cooking, electric blankets, overloading sockets, chimneys, low energy light bulbs, escape plans and much more. This is all free of charge with the aim of encouraging people to think about fire safety in the home.” She added: “People need to consider their night-time routine – close doors,
keep an escape route clear, and check they know where the door key is so they can let themselves out. Smoke alarms should be tested once a week to make sure they are still working and in good condition. Tastes so good... TOMATO REVITALISING SMOOTHIE
Revitalise yourself with a delicious, fresh tasting, peppery tomato smoothie. This quick and easy smoothie packs a punch both in flavor and also nutritionally. Tomatoes are rich in lycopene, the nutrient that gives tomatoes their red colour, the benefits of which are well documented for protecting cardiovascular health and also for being anti-carcinogenic. Tomato based lycopene, combined with a small amount of fat in the yogurt increases these health benefits according to much research conducted in the last decade. Enjoy!
Ingredients: 1 tbsp fresh basil leaves 12 cherry tomatoes 2 tbsp natural yogurt or crème fraiche A few turns of freshly ground pepper 1 tsp lime juice 2 tbsp water or apple juice.

So if you're planning a trip abroad in 2014, I'm going to explain how in a few clicks you can give yourself perfect exchange rates in every country, every time you go. Permanently holster unbeatable exchange rates. Spending abroad on plastic is usually costly, as banks get perfect rates but then add a hidden 3% load onto what they charge (so spending £100 worth of dollars costs us £103). Yet a few cards are marketed as super-cheap abroad in the hope you’ll also use them here, where they’re not always so cheap. These specialist, no annual fee, credit cards are load-free worldwide, smashing bureaux de change, giving permanently unbeatable rates everywhere you use them. In other words, spend £100 worth of dollars and it costs £100. So I suggest you grab one, just for use abroad, and – if you’re a nerd like me – stow it in your overseas purse or wallet (alongside an EHIC card and any leftover cash from past travels). Yet the key rule is to ensure you always repay IN FULL, preferably by direct debit to minimise any interest. My top pick is www.halifax.co.uk’s Clarity card, which has the lowest ATM fees (even so, spending on the card beats cash withdrawals). The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Wow, what a mixture of weather we have had these last few months! Nellie took us all the way to Hull to see my family and we had 7 hours of solid rain getting there. Poor Nellie, she looked pretty drowned by the time we arrived. In fact a few days before we left, a shop owner pointed out that Nellie was “illegal!” Astonished, I asked “Why?”… He was right, Nellie was so dirty with all the spray, mud and debris off the roads, that you couldn’t see her number plate. Well I am pleased to say that she has had a wash and there should be NO policeman knocking on our door! Anyway, the journey back from Hull was far more pleasant and I just had to show you our panorama view of Nellie under the magnificent Humber Bridge. Back to ‘sunny’ Dorset and last weekend we went on a Geo Cache. If you have never done a Geo Cache before and like walking, exploring sights you may not have seen previously,
I highly recommend it. It is free! All you need to do is go online to www. geocaching.com. It is a “real world treasure hunt” and there are literally hundreds of walks with a purpose…to find the hidden “treasure”. The hidden treasure is actually a box of odds and ends that walkers have added, which you can take and replace with some thing else. There is often a list of all the ‘geo cachers’ who have done the same hunt which you can add your details to. The way you find the hidden treasure is by use of a GPS device which you can buy, or indeed find an app on your phone. Once you have printed out the Geo Cache that you want to do, there are lots of clues which you use to discover the coordinates and thus find the trail to the treasure. It is ideal for youngsters who would otherwise complain about a ‘boring old walk’ and basically make your life a misery whilst you try and enjoy the fresh country or
31 said it was the middle of February and I hadn’t thought of that. Following the coordinates from the clues given, the Geo Cache took us over the fields with three wonderful Shire horses (not to be messed with, I could see…) and great views across the River Stour and the Priory at Christchurch. We would never have taken this route, or discovered it at all without having looked on line for a Geo Cache. A couple of the clues were a little tricky but we found the treasure! The tree was lying in a pool of water and Hayden and Stephen had fun doing ‘a tight rope walk’ to get to the buried treasure box. Victory! The first clue... seaside air and the views. Everyone wins! It is exciting, it can be competitive, and it gets you outside. Saturday was a beautiful day and Nellie chose to take us to Hengistbury Head. The Geo Cache took us along the river behind the golf course. Protected here from the wind, it really was very warm. Hayden, knowing we were near the sea and being a keen swimmer himself, announced disappointedly, “Oh Mum, you didn’t bring the swimmers!” I laughed and

Finder’s reward We followed the trail back past the golf course, had a much appreciated and rather large ice cream reward, a cup of coffee in Nellie and a final brisk walk along the wonderful coastline. Once we were back on the cliff top with a very cold sea breeze, though a gorgeously bright day, I think Hayden forgot about the “swimmers”! Red Arrows confirmed for all four days of the 2014 Bournemouth Air Festival It’s officially a first for the Bournemouth Air Festival, but the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows have confi rmed today they will be displaying at on all 4-days of the much anticipated summer event. Jon Weaver, Air Festival Director said; “We’ve only found out today (12th February) and can’t believe we have been allocated the Red Arrows for all 4days of the Air Festival, its incredible news. For us as a Festival, the organisers, teams of people behind the event and the hundreds of thousands of people who attend, it really shows how far we have come to have such superb RAF support. We have great plans to develop this year’s festival and with news like this - it can only get better!” It’s a momentous year for the Reds as they celebrate their 50th display season and with this a recently unveiled new tailfin design. The makeover is the most significant change to the look of the Team’s
famous aircraft in its history. In the shape of a Union flag, the striking new tail design reflects the Best of British and emphasises the Red Arrows’ role as ambassadors for the United Kingdom and as the public face of the Royal Air Force. Faith Healer
It takes listening to precisely fi ve seconds of Paloma Faith’s comeback single to realise that you are already in the company of one of the best pop tracks that you are going to hear all year. By the time it gets to the chorus of Can’t Rely on You, with its defiant stomp and backing vocals from the songs’ creator, hit-maker-in-chief Pharrell Williams, it also becomes patently clear that Faith, reinvigorated and buoyant, is set to enjoy a bumper year. Can’t Rely on You is the lead track of her forthcoming third album A Perfect Contradiction, and her best yet: as equally upbeat and sassy as it is soulful, and with a positivity that’s impossible to resist. The inspiration, Faith says, came from not wanting to make a record as downbeat as its predecessor Fall to Grace, which documented failed relationships to mostly melancholy, ballad-like fare. “When I was touring the last album I got a bit bored of being upset,” Faith says. “I think sometimes when you write sad songs you write them in a moment when it’s like therapy, but then when you’re singing them 18 months later it’s like picking off a scab. This time I knew I needed to inject some hope. There’s some heartache, but it’s got a hopeful vibe to it. And I’ve returned to my soul roots, working with people I’ve admired for a long time.”
A Perfect Contradiction is an evocative title - where did that come from? “I mean perfect contradiction in terms of the last album, because that was melancholic, but also in everyday life. You can’t have real joy without real sadness. It extends to a conversation I had with Pharrell. He was asking me about myself and I said I feel an affinity with people who are a perfect mix of contradictions. And he said ‘do you think you are?’ and I said ‘yeah’ and then he told me I should call my album that. I went home and mulled it over; I decided it was a really good title, because it meant a lot of things. It’s to do with accepting difference within ourselves as well as other people and our experiences.” Faith worked with a host of names on A Perfect Contradiction (Raphael Saadiq, John Legend, Diane Warren) but it is inevitably the collaboration with Pharrell that is of most intrigue. “He approached me at a party to work
37 with me and we wrote a couple of songs together, and as we got to know each other through that time he said that he had this song that he’d written that he’d been sitting on for ages. He said he thought it would suit me, and did I want to hear it. I was like ‘of course’, and I loved it. It totally has my name on it. “Pharrell is very nice, humble, and so likeable. He works very hard and throws a lot away, because he only wants the best to come out.” He is certainly is a happy fellow, and the go-to man for a smash hit, isn’t he? “Yes, but you want to hear the ones that don’t make it, though!” Faith is arguably as well known for her sense of style than she is for her music, and her appearance is a vital component of the entire songstress/ fashion icon package. “For as long as I can remember I’ve had it drummed into me that presentation is important. My family is full of women who really make an effort. I’ve never been around people who just wear jeans and t-shirt. “In fact, the other day I was walking around Brick Lane with my mum, my aunt and my cousin. This girl came up and said ‘you four look like brilliantly dressed women; can I take a picture for
my art project?’ She later wrote to me on Twitter later to say ‘sorry, I had no idea it was you!’ It was so funny.” But getting stopped in the street was partly what made Faith head across the Atlantic to make A Perfect Contradiction. “I do get stopped a lot – it’s flattering but it’s difficult to detach yourself. Ultimately, I wanted to write an album that was down to earth and about real issues, and I didn’t feel that my life was conducive to that over here. It’s not a realistic lifestyle to have being stopped by people all the time; it doesn’t promote a realistic attitude of life. People can’t relate to it.” After A Perfect Contradiction hits the shops in March, Faith says she can’t wait to get on the road and reinterpret the new songs for a live audience. “We haven’t planned it yet but we’ll hopefully be touring towards the end of the year. I am looking forward to going out and touring it - it’s a musician’s album. My band love it; they can’t wait to show off, and nor can I!” Shaun Curran Paloma Faith’s new album A Perfect Contradiction is out March 10th, on RCA Records.
