Wild Gardening — Some Hints and Tips Dorset has some of the country's best nature reserves and is the base for national conservation organisations such as the Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Trust and the Butterfly Conservation Trust. Dorset's botanical records boast more species than any other county. However, nature reserves are under ever increasing pressure from people and habitat loss is threatening many of our native species. Our gardens represent a huge potential habitat and if a few small changes are made then wildlife could benefit greatly. Dig a Pond – This will bring instant wildlife to your garden. Pond skaters and birds will find it within hours of you filling it with water. Frogs, newts and dragonflies will probably follow within a year. Grow Wildflowers – Many common garden plants are heavily cultivated and non native. This means that, while they can look pretty, they are poor for wildlife. Try growing some native wildflowers and reduce the amount of non native species

Rose Chafer Beetle such as rhododendron. You could also set aside an area of your lawn and let it grow wild. Compost – As well as reducing landfill, a compost site can be a habitat in its own right. Invertebrates will thrive as the green waste is broken down and this will bring in larger predators like birds and toads. The heat generated by the decomposition will attract slug eating slow worms and harmless grass snakes. Bird boxes – Loss of trees and hedgerows has meant that suitable sites for nesting birds are in short supply. The size of the entrance hole will dictate what species of bird will live there. You can also put up bat boxes or bug hotels. Log Pile – Our obsession for tidiness has means that dead wood has become a rare habitat. Next time you get the chance, make a small, neat pile of logs in a hidden corner of your garden. You will soon get all sorts of wildlife and some interesting fungus. Robin Redbreast and Jenny Wren In my article last month I made a whopping howler. Oh dear me! Several people have wagged their fingers at me because I spoke of the old farthing coin as having a robin on it! – and of course, it was a wren! So sorry!!! I really did know better. But thinking about Robin Redbreast and Jenny Wren made me ponder on the way we used to give lovely affectionate names to our birds and animals. It’s a pity we don’t use them still. The redbreast was given the name Robin, and this has become the standard name for him – but rather s a d l y, ‘ J e n n y’ h a s b e e n a l m o s t forgotten. The wren’s preposterous scientific name, Troglodytes troglodytes was foisted on it because of its habit of getting into little holes: and this name is derived from the two Greek words trogle, a hole, and dyein, to get into. Jack Daw has had his two names linked together to produce the standard dictionary word for him: ‘jackdaw’. And the same has happened to the magpie, for the ‘mag’ part of this was formerly a girl’s name – a shortened form of ‘Margaret’. Yet another first name which survives is Tom tit – and the word ‘tit’ is of Norse origin, meaning ‘small’, as in ‘titmouse’ and also our word ‘titbit’ Rather amusingly, the Americans prefer to spell this as ‘tidbit’ as a result of their absurdly misplaced prudery (no, don’t ask me to explain!).

The martin really is Martin – a first name being used as a common noun. No one quite knows why this is, but some have guessed that it’s because these birds fly south around the time of Martinmas (11th November) and reappear in March (the month of Mars). Of course some birds have names which are picturesquely self-evident: the wagtail, the flycatcher, the sparrowhawk, the warbler, the tree-creeper, the waxwing (which has small appendages on its wings, resembling red sealingwax), the chaffinch (which searches for food among chaff), the woodpecker, and the nightjar (which makes a curious ‘jarring’ or whirring noise at night). In fact, the nigh tjar has sei zed countryfolks’ imaginations to such an extent that it has been given a host of other names: ‘night-churr’, ‘eve-churr’, ‘eve-jar’, ‘churnjar’, and ‘jar-owl’. Even its odd scientific name, Caprimulgus europaeus, reminds us of the weird old medieval belief that it actually sucks the udders of goats! (from the Latin words capra, goat, and mulgere, to milk.

Find us online at www.thebournemouthdirectory.co.uk Nightjars, being nocturnal and noisy, have attracted strange folklore tales too – not only that they suck goats, but also that they are witches in disguise and can be shot only by a silver sixpence; and there was a Yorkshire superstition that they are the souls of unbaptised children, doomed to fly perpetually in the air. Nightjars are now so rare that in 2006 twenty thousand new homes which had been planned to be built across 300 square miles of south east of England, were put on hold because the area was the home of the nightjar, the woodlark, and the Dartford warbler. As a result of this ban, developers claimed to have lost millions of pounds and at least forty jobs had to be cut! Birds are important!

But to return to the robin, a charming old legend tells how he gained his red breast when he tried to pull a prickle out of the Crown of Thorns as Jesus hung on the cross. And as for little Jenny Wren, she was always believed to be Robin Redbreast’s wife! An extremely widespread old rhyme put it thus: The robin and the wren Are God Almighty’s cock and hen.
