Dear Bournemouth Residents, Yes it really is Panto time! Can you believe how this year has flown by? Stephen, Hayden and myself are off to Hull for Christmas this year to catch up with my family. It is quite a while since we have travelled up there for the festive season and I am really looking forward to seeing the extended family as well as my parents. For me that is what Christmas is all about. Mum and Dad have come down South for the past few years, but now Hayden is 9 we feel that Father Christmas wouldn’t mind dropping the presents off in Hull… If you are entertaining this year, then maybe you need some help in the home, to create the space you want. Why not give one of our loyal advertisers a call? From fitted furniture to rubbish clearance, to sorting the plumbing or the electrics out, to fitting a new carpet or even have the whole house cleaned by someone else! A great variety of talented and skilled people can help you and give you time to do that all important shopping. The new independent music store in the Royal Arcade is worth a visit! Dorset Soils and Aggregates have some lovely Christmas trees for you at a great price. We bought ours there last year. We had a wonderful Christmas display on it and the tree looked fabulous. Do take some time out too—Sleeping Beauty is on at the Pavilion. Don’t’ miss that one! A group of 20 of us are all going there next week...oh yes we are… Father Christmas is coming to Compton Acres as well as Bournemouth Town Centre! This can all be seen inside. The laughter Yoga Group sounds good for a laugh too. Whatever you do this Christmas I hope you have a great time and that you share it with friends or family. The Bournemouth Directory Welcomes New Graduate Billie to the Team! The Bournemouth Directory, published by Dorset Publications, has a new team member! Billie-Louise Ryder-Carlton (Billie for short) was born in Kent and moved to Bournemouth in 2009 to begin studying at the University. She says, “Business studies was always one of my favourite subjects, and the beach has always been one of my favourite places, so I decided to combine the two. Bournemouth is worlds apart from where I grew up. I love the South Coast. Of course there is the stunning scenery, but there is also the people. The atmosphere in Dorset is much more relaxed and easygoing. I love it!” On the 8th of November Billie joined hundreds of other students at the Bournemouth International Centre to graduate in style. She says, “The ceremony was beautiful; one of my friends turned to me and said that she thought the ceremony was ‘very English’. I couldn’t see what she was getting at, as we all stood for the National Anthem looking not unlike Harry Potter. Anyway, it was a lot of fun, my family were very proud, and that was all that really mattered.” Billie smiled and continued, “The past three years have flown by, and in a way I am sad that it is over, but on the other hand I am now the proud ow ne r of a d e gr e e in Bu si ne s s a nd Management from Bournemouth University!” The Business and Management course covers many different aspects of business. Billie states, “I chose that course because it wasn’t too heavily focused on only one subject. I enjoy all areas of business and so this was perfe ct for me . It c overed everything from the finances, to international marketing and management.”

Bournemouth has several buildings with the University’s logo emblazoned along the front, and within these buildings are hundreds of students working away to earn their degrees. Billie says, “The amount of study space was brilliant. The library on the main campus is nothing short of impressive, but then there is also another at Lansdowne, which was very useful for me as I wanted to live as close to the town centre as possible. I also spent many, many hours at Studland House typing away. I have nothing but praise for the University. They look after their students incredibly well.” “Stephen and I welcome you to the Dorset Publications team!” exclaims Debbie

A Christmas show for kids with a difference
as BOING! comes to Bournemouth! This Christmas, Pavilion Dance South West offers the perfect alternative to the traditional panto on 3 and 4 January 2013. Lucy’s recipe corner Warming winter tomato soup There is a bit of chopping and heat involved in this recipe so make sure a grown up is there to help out. Put a little olive oil in a large pan Pop in the onions and carrots and cook gently until the onion is soft Ingredients for 6 servings
1 large red onion (chopped up) 2 large grated carrots 1 pint of vegetable stock 2 tins of chopped tomatoes 1 tsp of tomato puree A little bit of olive oil
Add the tinned tomatoes, vegetable stock and tomato puree and simmer for 15 minutes Blend to taste The soup is suitable for freezing and great for flasks in kids lunch boxes.

Next time you step outside and think “its cold out here”, please spare a thought for the many people that often, through no fault of their own, find themselves homeless and living on the streets in our community. There are many different circumstances that can lead to someone being homeless; job loss; relationship breakups; mental health issues; escaping abuse or domestic violence; the reasons can be as varied as the people who find themselves in need of help. During the winter, BCHA run schemes in Bournemouth and Poole to help more people shelter from the harsh weather conditions outside. In Bournemouth, St Paul’s night shelter runs Winter Watch, where an additional 10 bed spaces are provided each night, meaning St Pauls provides shelter to 50 people every night. While Poole does not have a night shelter, when the weather drops below zero for three consecutive nights BCHA and Routes to Routes run a severe weather emergency provision,

opening Gateway church hall to offer 10 people shelter, a mattress, warm bedding and a hot nutritious meal. These schemes not only provide vital shelter, food and medical help for some very vulnerable people, but also allow BCHA staff to engage with people who would otherwise not access help. With BCHA’s support, people can take positive steps in their life and create hope for a brighter future. However, BCHA need your support to help to continue to offer these essential services, they need volunteers, clothing, food and money to enable them to help as many people as they can this winter. Pantomime season returns to the Bournemouth Pavilion from Saturday 8 December as we welcome Sleeping Beauty. This year’s offering is once again brought to you by UK Productions following a record-breaking production of Jack and the Beanstalk last year. Returning to once again write, direct and star is venue favourite and Bournemouth resident Chris Jarvis as Happy Harry, whose local gags, rapport with the audience and range of impressions always go down a storm with adults and children alike. We’re also delighted to welcome back o n e o f t he be s t P a n to v i l l a i n s Bournemouth has seen in recent years, Su Pollard – last with us for the 2009 Panto season – as Carabosse. Also returning from the cast of Jack and the Beanstalk is Wave 105 presenter Kate Weston as Good Fairy. Local adventurer Martin Budden teamed up with other members of the Church of Scientology in Poole to cycle around the Isle of Wight in a day to raise money for local charity Julia’s House.
This was the latest in a series of challenges organized by Martin and other Scientologists that have included cycle rides, abseils, hiking and mountain scrambling. All together these have raised approximately ÂŁ17,000 for various charities.

For this one, the 71 miles around the island was done successfully in July despite warm conditions & more than a few seemingly endless hills. Many thanks goes to all those people and businesses who sponsored the team, many of them being from the Poole and Bournemouth areas.
