Use your leisure time with Poole U3A The University of the Third Age (U3A) was established initially in Toulouse, France, in 1972, and adopted in the UK in 1982. It is a self-help organisation for people no longer in full time employment, providing educational, creative and leisure opportunities in a friendly environment. It consists of local U3As all over the UK, which are charities in their own right and run entirely by volunteers. Poole U3A, established in 1992, currently runs some 140 different daytime classes/activities throughout the borough at 29 venues. There is a moderate annual membership fee, but no further costs per class other than consumable items such as craft materials, etc. Those running classes and other activities are all unpaid, the principle being that they demonstrate and pass on skills and information that they themselves have learned or used during their working life. Subjects included in the Poole U3A prospectus include

Chip Shop Challenge 2017 Calling all chippies – Julia’s House needs you!
The Dorset and Wiltshire children’s hospice charity is appealing for Dorset chip shop owners to sign up for their 2017 Chip Shop Challenge and donate 5p from every portion of chips sold in August to support families with a life-limited child.

The annual campaign has proved very popular with both chip shops and customers, with many posting selfies in support of the challenge on the Julia’s House Facebook page.
Julia’s House cares for children who may not live into adulthood, providing practical and emotional support through frequent short breaks for mums and dads and social opportunities for the whole family.
Every chip shop that signs up will receive a fundraising pack including a poster and information about the charity to show their customers what they are doing and how they are supporting Julia’s House.

What lies beneath... The annual celebration of the sea with national ‘Marine Weeks’ from 29th July – 13th August is a chance for us to all reflect about what the sea means to us. Living in Dorset means most of us are a stone’s throw away from the beautiful beach, with many of us spending our summer swimming in it, walking along it and admiring it from near or afar. For something that’s such a big part of our lives in Dorset, many of us know very little about the underwater world which lies beneath the waves. Not unlike our neighbourhoods on land, the sea has communities, families and homes which are surviving and reproducing every day; the difference is that we can’t always see this world easily, which makes it hard to understand, and appreciate. In 2013, Dorset had three Marine Conservation Zones (MCZ’s) designated including Poole Rocks MCZ, the South Dorset MCZ and Chesil Beach & Stennis Ledges MCZ, providing protection for the species living there. The charm and charisma of the fascinating marine wildlife which will benefit from this protection should not be underestimated in favour of their land-based counterparts. Cuttlefish, for example, are intelligent animals and masters of deception, deploying secret ‘weapons’ with the cunning of James Bond; squirting enemies in a

cloud of black ink, before making their escape, and trapping prey with lightning-fast tentacles. The black bream which flock to the Poole Rocks MCZ each spring protect their nests to the death and spend weeks creating the perfect nests for thousands of their eggs to hatch. Wildlife of the sea has some amazing stories and characters, from the bizarre looking tompot blenny, the European lobsters’ eyes popping out from between the crevices, to the iconic dolphins who sometimes venture into our world as we marvel at their speed and agility, jumping in and out of the water. There are things we can all do to learn about marine wildlife, and also help it. A partnership project led by DWT, Southern IFCA, the NEFS, MCS, Seasearch and 7 Tenths Ecology Ltd has seen the creation of a fantastic website about Poole Rocks MCZ, complete with high quality video and images, to depict life beneath the sea. Stagewise student lands place at National Youth Theatre Talented local actor Thomas Spiers has won a place at the prestigious National Youth Theatre in London, following in the footsteps of alumni including Jude Law and Matt Smith. Approximately 5,000 young performers auditioned this year for the chance to be offered one of 500 places. Thomas, who is 18 and from Parkstone, has been a student with Stagewise Performing Arts for the last ten years. He begins a three week residential course with the National Youth Theatre this summer and will remain a member with them until he is 25, gaining access to a range of professional training and performance opportunities. “Without the support, friendship and experiences I have gained in my 10 years at Stagewise I would never have had the confidence to audition for the National Youth Theatre, “ explains Thomas. “They’ve built me up so much as a person, helped Thomas Spiers as the Butler in Joseph Photo: Richard Crease

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Directories Camper Van Don’t we just love listening to the young ones talking about their exploits? Well, Nellie is no exception and she loves to hear what Hayden has been up to. Hayden was lucky enough to be chosen to do the ‘Blue Skies’ Programme, through his school. Blue Skies is part of the Jon Egging Trust (JET) which was set up in memory of Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging, who tragically lost his life while flying in the Red Arrows display at the Bournemouth Air Festival in 2011. The Trust realises Jon’s dream of inspiring young people through his love of aviation, teamwork and leadership and it supports young people aged 13-16, to achieve their full potential. This is what Hayden, who is 13, told Nellie… “Joining the group I felt slightly nervous as I didn’t know what it was about, but very excited about going on some special trips that money wouldn’t buy. The first place we went to was MOD Boscombe Down. We saw some planes, went in an olden day hangar and used night vision torches and goggles. It was very exciting. We were also introduced to the concept of Blue Skies which is to

We were challenged with our communication skills here! My favourite trip was when we went to Winchester University. We got to touch a real life 800 year old skeleton. I put its spine together! On a lighter note we were taught how to calculate a skeleton’s age and gender. I learned all about the different bones in the body and that when you are born you have 300 plus bones, but by the time you are an adult they fuse together into 206. After lunch, we looked at some objects that had been excavated and guessed what they were and what year they came from. I really enjoyed that trip!” Hayden said, with a big smile.

27 “Another trip we went to see Nelson’s Ship ‘HMS Victory’ in Portsmouth. It cost £50,834 in those days to build, which is the equivalent of £60 million now! I think that is what she said, it certainly was a lot and more than most people have.” Hayden looked amazed. “The best part was being able to eat in the officer’s mess, as the vessel is still listed as a Navy Ship and still manned. They have nearly replaced every single timber log and plank on the ship, except the strut that Nelson supposedly died on. There is no record of where he actually died but this is where all the clues lead to.” Hayden shuddered. “Apparently the ship’s officers were casually walking up and down the Ship out in the open when a French Musketeer got a lucky good shot at Nelson and hit him in the head. Nelson was the Admiral of the Fleet, not of the Ship itself, so he wasn’t running the ship.” Hayden asserted. “The last trip we went on before the unwanted ending was the ‘Tank Museum’

Nellie’s tinted windows prevented a few scares at Bovington where we finalised our presentations while looking at some very big powerful tanks. We even got to go on the ‘Chieftain’. This tank was created for the Cold War and could fire every 6 seconds compared to the Russian every 8 seconds. The Chieftain was the most powerful tank of its time and quite possibly it still is. I got to sit in the Commander’s seat of the tank!” continued Hayden. “We also got to learn some tank movements with some remotecontrol tanks. This was lots of fun!” “The dreaded day came where we would have to present our speeches that we had created for the sponsors of the Blue Skies and our parents. We were very nervous. Luckily, I had a skeleton to look at instead of the crowd, as I was talking about our trip to Winchester University! Everyone did their speeches and we all got through in the end! Then me and some of the other Blue Skies graduates met up and had fun for the rest of the day. I feel that the Blue Skies programme has helped me to create presentations and help in speaking to crowds. Every one of us has created a team spirit with each other and I feel that we could push each other through anything. Tastes so good... Risotto
Risotto is a northern Italian rice dish, that’s quick to prepare and yet a satisfying meal. Great for using up leftovers, why not experiment to add new ingredients?
Ingredients for 2 servings 1 small onion, finely chopped 1 clove garlic 2 small sticks of celery Half a red pepper, chopped into small pieces 1 vegetable stock cube 200ml boiling water 4 small handfuls of risotto rice Bacon (optional to make a non-vegetarian version) Parmesan cheese to top (if required)

Heat some oil in a pan.

Lightly brown the onion and add the garlic
3.
Add the rest of the chopped ingredients and fry for a couple of minutes until slightly softened.
4.
Add the risotto rice and fry, stirring regularly for another couple of minutes.
5.
Add the stock cube to the boiling water and pour onto the rice dish.
6.
Cover with a lid and reduce the heat.
7.
Once all the liquid has been absorbed, your dish is ready to serve.

BCHA show commitment to housing for young people Local housing and support provider, BCHA, has reaffirmed its commitment to local people, with the recent announcement of two new building projects in the Bournemouth area. Work has already started on a three story extension, which will see the conversion of its former office space into six 2 bedroom flats. BCHA has been awarded funding from the Homes and Communities Agency/Department Health ‘Platform for Life’ scheme. This funding has been allocated to help specialist housing providers create low-rent accommodation for young people aged 18 to 24 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Funding is available to support tenants’ participation in work, further education and vocational training and assist residents into long term employment, independence and improved prospects for a successful and healthy life. Tenancies will be time limited and conditional to participation in work, further education or vocational training. BCHA is working closely with organisations including Bournemouth and Poole College and the Construction Training Board to provide apprenticeships and personal mentors for all the 18 to 24 year olds. Daryl Gibbins, BCHA Project Leader for Bournemouth Young Peoples Accommodation Service, said, “This accommodation is specifically aimed at helping young people have a better start in life by providing apprenticeships
that will hopefully lead them into full-time employment. Not only that, by offering them affordable rent, this gives them the opportunity to save for a deposit for when they move onto independent living.” In addition to this project the recent purchase of 12 bed former care home in Bournemouth, will see it refurbished into specialist housing for vulnerable adults with complex care needs. This 12-unit refurbishment, will comprise of 10 self-contained flats with en-suite and kitchen facilities and is due to be completed by August this year. BCHA, which will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2018, supports over 10,000 people every year across the South West to take control of their lives and equips them to find a way forward by helping homeless and vulnerable people access the right housing, health, learning and work opportunities.

On Your Plot Hoarding
It’s hard to remain excited when you’ve had courgette at every meal for a week, and marvellous though raspberries are there is a limit to just how many you can eat at once. Take a bit of time to store your harvest and you can be enjoying home grown right through the winter.
Jobs for August :-
• Water regularly - try to water either in the evening or early mornings. • If you are growing main crop potatoes, watch out for signs of blight. Brown patches on the tops and edges of leaves are usually a first sign. • Pinch out the tops of runner bean stems that are outgrowing their supports. • Keep harvesting those courgettes! • Sow turnips and oriental salad plants such as Pak Choi and Chinese Cabbage • Strawberry runners that were potted up in June to produce new plants can be planted out now. If all has gone to plan (that’s a big if!) then August should be a very satisfying month on your plot, with your hard work being repaid by ample harvests of a good range of fruit and veg. The reality tends to be that the excitement of seeing your crops grow and ripen is initially followed by much enjoyment of the first fruits of your labour which can soon be replaced by a panic stricken ‘What the heck do I do with all these’! Certain crops (courgettes and tomatoes spring to mind) can almost guarantee this sequence of events! Sharing with friends and neighbours is great but very often they will have a glut of exactly the same thing at just the same time. What is called for are some simple ideas for storing and preserving your produce. It may be a long time before you are harvesting fresh peas or raspberries again but that doesn’t mean that you can’t be enjoying your home grown produce throughout the winter - it just takes a little planning and now is the time to do it. Onions (and garlic) that have been lifted and
left to dry can be plaited and hung in a cool, dry place. Net bags, or tights, also work if you don’t fancy plaiting. Potatoes can be stored in boxes or paper sacks in a dark, dry building but you should check them regularly, removing any that show signs of rotting. A good size freezer is a real boon for making the most of your produce. Blanching and then freezing works for loads of vegetables. Key to success is to cool quickly after blanching so have a bowl of cold water at the ready and don’t forget to label what you are freezing! Another option, and one that can work well for all those tomatoes, is to find a good recipe that you can cook, freeze and use later (how about a wonderful pasta sauce with your own tomatoes and home grown basil?). Even ‘difficult to freeze’ veg such as courgettes can either be incorporated into a sauce, or blanched, frozen and then added to a stew at a later date. Cooking and freezing can work well for fruit too - apple or rhubarb are good stewed and frozen all ready for use in a crumble or pie. If you have a truly wonderful fruit crop then why not arm yourself with a good recipe book and get started on some jam making? It’ll be delicious on your toast in the morning, and what better gift than a pot of homemade raspberry jam? It’s amazing how many books there are that tell you how to grow your fruit and veg, but how little information there is on just how to store it all! One wonderful little book, that deals with just this question is ‘How to store your garden produce’ by Piers Warren. It’s packed with information about how to store just about anything and a great addition to any gardeners library. Happy harvesting!

All-New Peugeot 3008 SUV GT Line By Tim Barnes-Clay, www.carwriteups.co.uk
It is not unusual to see some big changes between an older and newer generation of the same model, but the all-new Peugeot 3008 SUV looks radically different to the outgoing one. That exiting generation, introduced in 2008, was a frumpy, chubby SUV that did little to inspire buyers. The all-new Peugeot 3008 SUV, though, is a different animal, burying the clumsy image of the last car six-feet under and achieving the European Car of the Year crown. Sometimes it can be difficult to separate SUVs out on the road because most of them drive alike. Many are set up for comfort, and that’s what the all-new 3008 is tuned for. The small steering wheel and light handling gives a feeling of sprightliness, even if that’s not the case, as it’s a tall, heavy car. However; that’s not a complaint, the designers and engineers have done a good job covering the traditional flaws of an SUV’s dynamics. There’s a wholesome medley of engines on offer, as with most Peugeot models: two petrol’s in the shape of a 131PS 1.2-litre unit and a 165PS 1.6-litre turbo. Then there are a couple of turbo diesel engines of 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre capacity. What suits you best is largely going to depend on what sort of driving you do. Short urban trips suit the 1.2-litre petrol more, whereas longer journeys will fit the potential 70mpg obtainable from the 1.6-litre diesel. I drove the 1.2 petrol in GT Line spec with 131PS, fitted with a manual gearbox. Behind the wheel, things feel dynamic, and the weighting of the steering is spot on. The car grips bitumen like a cat’s claws cling to flesh, and mid-range pulling power is good, so you can pick up the pace easily. The six-speed transmission is slick shifting, and the car delivers a hushed ride. Tyre roar and wind whistle is kept out of the cabin, too. All this just adds to the 3008’s sense of refinement. The Peugeot offers a composed ride with seats that provide the sort of comfort and support required for long distance motoring. Furthermore, the car’s suspension sops up potholes without complaining. Significantly, the all-new 3008 doesn’t tip into bends. Indeed, body roll is very well contained. This surprised me, as smaller SUVs aren’t always the type of vehicle to stay so unflustered on twisty tarmac.
The new 3008 comes in four levels of trim: Active, Allure, GT Line and GT. Factory fitted safety kit includes automatic emergency braking and rear parking sensors. The GT Line hasn’t got any extra safety equipment - just sportier looks. But it has all the safety kit you really need, and as with all 3008s, it has a top five-star Euro NCAP safety score. A car can look great and have all the equipment in the world crammed into it – but it’s no good if it isn’t economical and it doesn’t drive decently. There are no concerns to be had in this area with the 3008 SUV. The 1.2 GT Line’s average fuel consumption of 55.4mpg and 117g/km of CO2 means low running costs, combined with effective performance. 0-62mph is achieved in 10.8 seconds and the Pug’s maximum speed is 117mph. The all-new Peugeot 3008 SUV’s entry price is £21,795, but expect to fork out £25,655 for the petrol-powered GT Line I drove. A basic Nissan Qashqai costs £18,545, and the new SEAT Ateca is priced from £17,990. But I think the 3008’s extra cost is justified because it feels more upmarket inside than these two rivals. Cabin materials include brushed chrome, large areas of carbon decoration and textiles. They even cover some areas less commonly found in SUVs, such as the dashboard inlay. It’s all very contemporary and attractive. The Peugeot is just as stylish outside, and it drives well, while delivering a comfortable ride for all.
