We are both in new relationships and I live with my new partner. My wife and I haven’t properly dealt with our joint finances and I haven’t ever made a Will. Would my new partner inherit my estate?

If you were to die without having made a legally valid Will, your estate would pass via the intestacy rules. These are a specific set of rules which provide an order of priority of those entitled to your estate. While you remain married, your wife would automatically be entitled to everything in your estate up to a certain value depending on whether or not you have children. Thus, there would be no set provision for your new partner. Making a Will is also important as you are able to choose your Executor(s) and make your wishes known as regards future arrangements. My husband and I are in the process of getting a divorce and have dealt with most of it ourselves. So far, everything has been arranged informally. However, I want to make sure we sort our finances properly and that I get my fair share. I also think I am entitled to some of his pension. What should I do? You should certainly seek professional advice when it comes to sorting your finances to make sure that any agreement you reach is fair and that it takes both parties’ contributions into account. Professional advice may involve an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA) and possibly an Actuary as well as the lawyer. Even where one party does not work (i.e. to care for children at home) the Court will usually view their contribution to the marriage as equal to that of the main breadwinner. The only way to secure a pension sharing order is by a formal Order of the Court. Whilst you can attempt to reach an agreement between yourselves, when you come to present this to the Court, both parties have to provide a breakdown of their finances, including income and pensions. If a Judge thinks that the agreement you have reached is not fair, an Order will not be granted and you may both be asked to attend Court to provide an explanation. We would therefore suggest that you seek legal advice as soon as possible to guide you through this process. Floss, what’s all the fuss? By Chloe Chen, dental hygienist at New Street Dental Care, Andover Do we even need to clean in between our teeth? Floss is one tool you can use to get in the gaps between our teeth, which is essential for healthy gums and teeth. If we just brushed our teeth with a toothbrush and nothing else, we are leaving 40% of our teeth untouched. These surfaces that don’t get cleaned by the toothbrush are then at a higher risk of developing problems such as tooth decay and gum disease. But most people seem to hate doing it or don’t have time for it with many other variations on these excuses (even I have struggled with it in the past). So, do we actually need to use floss? For small gaps between our teeth floss will remove the harmful plaque bacteria. But, if the gaps are bigger, floss will just waft around and won’t remove everything we want it to. That’s where interdental brushes are useful as you can get the correct size to fill the gaps. The bristles can then remove all the plaque bacteria that our toothbrush and floss can’t reach. If we leave it there, our risk of tooth decay and gum disease increases and are more likely to loose teeth. But flossing makes my gums bleed! Now this is a tricky one to explain, because at first yes it will make your gums bleed but, if you do it regularly it will stop. When the harmful plaque bacteria have been on your gums for some time, your body will send blood vessels (for the white blood cells that deal with bacteria) very close to the surface of your gums. The blood vessels then become ‘leaky’ so that things can pass easier in and out of them. If you then touch your gums at this point, they will bleed, this is due to the bacteria, not the fact you have touched them. Once you regularly remove this bacteria, the blood is no longer needed and the vessels can go back further under the surface to where they should be. This can take a few days but at this point your gums should have stopped bleeding. If they continue to bleed there may be another underlying cause and speaking to you dentist or doctor is recommend. I’m such a lazy flosser, is there anything that can make it easier?

There is a gadget that can “floss” our teeth for us and it is called an Air Flosser. It’s also a great one for those that struggle to find the time, have really difficult teeth to get between, if you have braces or retainer wires and if you are just plain lazy. There are many types on the market but one in particular has some impressive studies to show how effective it is. The Air Floss Pro by Phillips Sonicare uses air and water (or mouthwash) at high pressure to blast between our teeth removing the plaque by force. It has been found to be just as effective as flossing. However, if the gaps between your teeth are bigger then you will still need to use interdental brushes. I started to use one just so I could see what all the hype was about and I found it so easy to use and quick. I could clean inbetween all my teeth in about 30 seconds! However, the gaps between my teeth are bigger so I need to use a range of interdental brushes. Getting Out and About Unity, a Test Valley charity based in Romsey and Andover, hosted the first of a series of rural Community Drop-In Events across southern Test Valley commencing in North Baddesley recently. Groups such as the UK Men’s Shed came along with mince pies. Other local groups were invited with Abbotswood Care Home also in attendance. Members of the public dropped in to find out a bit more about what is available in their locality. Christianne Ireland, Unity Voluntary Sector Support Manager said, “To have an opportunity to reach into the community and to help people find out about the wealth of services available is so important and we are pleased that this first Drop-In was such a success. Thanks must go to the local public who popped in, the groups who joined us and networked throughout the morning, councillors who dropped by and our own Unity volunteers without whom we would not have been able to run it at all.” The events are designed to enable local charities and groups to promote their activities and to engage with local people to promote and raise awareness of volunteering, the beating heart of many important intervention services in the community. Unity promote their own services too which include running the Test Valley Volunteer Centre, Community Transport such as their 13 Dial-A-Ride Routes and Group Hire vehicles as well as their Home Support and Decluttering service, Cardea Ltd, helping people to remain independent and improve their health and wellbeing. Borough council slashes parking charges to help town centre rejuvenation plans Test Valley Borough Council is set to slash its two-hour parking charge by more than 40 per cent to help increase visitors to Romsey. From April 2020, shoppers will be able to park for two hours for just £1, the same price currently charged for one hour, doubling the amount of time they can stay. The changes will also see the removal of the 30-minute, 45-minute and hour tariffs - with prices starting at £1 for two hours. Parking portfolio holder and deputy leader, Councillor Nick Adams-King, said: “We have such ambitious plans to rejuvenate our town centres and the one thing we are continually asked for is cheaper parking. So instead of following the old parking strategy of inflationary rises, we’re thrilled to offer two-hours parking for the current price of one. “The majority of people that park in Test Valley car parks stay for between one and two hours, so these changes will help the greatest number of users. Free parking after 4pm and all day on Sundays and bank holidays will still apply – and with contactless payment now available we’re making sure it is as easy as possible to park up and shop locally.
“While the very short-stay charges will be removed, people will now be able to secure two hours of parking for just £1, which we hope will encourage those parking in the borough not to rush and instead enjoy a little more time in the town centre.” As well as the four-hour free parking offer at Romsey Rapids continuing past April 2020, the price to stay all day will also remain at £2.10. Romsey town centre manager, Mark Edgerley said: “I welcome the reductions in short stay charges and retention of the free period after 4pm and on bank holidays, this sends a very strong message to shoppers and visitors that Romsey welcomes town centre users. The revised charges demonstrate TVBC’s award winning support for small retail businesses and the importance the council places on vibrant town centres.”

Tree planting through 2019 reaches leafy heights More than 170 trees have been planted by Test Valley Borough Council over the past 12 months as part of the authority’s annual replacement programme. Borough wards including Valley Park, Romsey Cupernham, Andover Millway and Winton have all seen many of the tree varieties planted since the start of 2019. Every year, the council undertakes a tree planting programme to help regenerate the borough’s green spaces, on top of the everyday work carried out throughout the year, which maintain residential and leisure locations, as well as help the wildlife to flourish. All 172 trees were purchased locally from Hilliers Nursery in Ampfield and include tulip trees, giant redwoods and pine trees. Picket Twenty, Rooksbury Cycle Path and Admirals Way all saw trees planted, while other areas including Tadburn in Romsey and Harroway in Andover also benefitted. For 2020, the council is already looking to plant between 170 and 200 further trees around the borough. Community and leisure portfolio holder, councillor Tony Ward, said: “A lot of the agricultural work that our countryside teams do can often be taken for granted, but every site visit and maintenance carried out is so important. “Our borough is filled with beautiful open spaces, but making sure our residential areas are also as green as possible is just as vital to us. It’s great to know that Romsey, Andover and everywhere in between has benefitted from our annual programme, and I know the plans for 2020 are no different.”

Just plug in and go! New electric vehicle charging points across Test Valley are to be completely free to use as an introductory offer for those with electric vehicles. The new charge points are being part funded by a Government grant from the Office of Low Emission Vehicles. They are being put in place at different Test Valley Borough Council car parks in Andover and Romsey, with 18 in total to be installed by Joju Solar, working in partnership with Vattenfall UK. Until 12th March, the charge points will be free to use, with signs being put in place to notify users. Drivers simply need to plug in and their vehicle will begin charging, with no need to use the app or provide payment. Four machines are currently available in the Chantry Centre car park, with two machines also at the Alma Road car park in Romsey. Two additional charging points can also be accessed in the town, at Lortemore Place. The further ten machines will also be free to use in the new year once their installation has been completed. Transport portfolio holder and deputy leader of Test Valley Borough Council, councillor Nick AdamsKing, said: "I’m really pleased that this offer is available to help encourage drivers to consider using a more environmentally-friendly form of transport. Being able to provide free electric charging points into the spring is a fantastic step and hopefully will also encourage drivers of these vehicles to visit our town centres in Andover and Romsey. Signs will be put up at the locations and as soon as the other charging points are completed, these new destinations will also benefit. Drivers simply need to just plug in and go!" The very first apprentice of Forces Re-Engineered successfully completed his apprenticeship Including a welding course, the cost of it was donated to Forces Re-Engineered. There are brilliant success stories all around at the beginning of 2020. The donation from the Savages MCC made it possible to purchase a big workshop heater. A true bliss for the team; without a heater the workshop gets really cold. So, a huge thank you goes to the Savages. There were other donations: Fluecraft donated a first aid course (which the receptionist of the team attended) and a customer donated his wonderfully red peddle car (from the 1940s/50s). Steph’s attendance at the Black-Tie Ball in aid of Bike Tours for the Wounded resulted in an order for a table from Forces Re-Engineered. They have become a bit of a trademark for the company. Heartburn and Acid Reflux Heartburn is a burning feeling in the chest caused by stomach acid travelling up towards the throat (acid reflux). If it keeps happening, it’s called gastrooesophageal reflux disease (GORD). The main symptoms of acid reflux are: • heartburn – a burning sensation in the middle of your chest • an unpleasant sour taste in your mouth, caused by stomach acid
• eat smaller, more frequent meals • raise 1 end of your bed 10 to 20cm by putting something under your bed or mattress – make it so your chest and head are above the level of your waist, so stomach acid does not travel up towards your throat • try to lose weight if you’re overweight

• try to find ways to relax
• a cough or hiccups that keep coming back

MONTHLY WALK by Malcolm Price
Walking round Shawford and Compton Northwards towards Winchester. The next 800 metres require underfoot care as we progress past sweeping gardens, swans swimming, fish wallowing in the shallows and the odd heron plying its meal trade. This path takes us up to Compton Lock, a local picnic spot and popular swimming pool during the warm summer weather. This is our cue to turn left across the narrow footbridge. This month’s walk heads out East of the area towards Winchester, with the selected start from The Bridge Inn, Shawford, Winchester, SO21 2BP (photo 1). This Inn charges for parking, redeemable when using the pub later, but local free parking can also be found nearby.

From here we are leaving the waterways behind and as we proceed onwards, trying to avoid the attraction of any cross paths, until we enter a bridge under the London Bound Railway (photo 2) and subsequently the M3 motorway bridge that leads us upward into the village of Compton and a busy road to cross. The walk covers approximately 4.5 miles, with the full range of underfoot conditions to negotiate, along with a testing hill climb and stunning views as a reward. In the context of this extremely wet winter, the first part of this walk will likely be very muddy as well as providing a number of exposed tree roots along the Itchen towpath; so great care needs to be taken ‘early doors’. A return trip in 90 minutes would be good going for the steady walker, although a longer outing is excusable – to allow for viewing time. Commencing this walk we go to the front of the Inn and cross the road (carefully) while turning left crossing the River Itchen bridge and now taking the left hand towpath on the opposite side of the road, aiming

Taking care to cross, what was once the A33 main road before the building of the M3, we walk on down as far as the church on the left (photo 3), whence we turn left beside the church along the gravel path. This track very soon starts to climb, swinging right and taking us ever upward through an avenue of @mlggazettesnews
trees (photo 4) for some 600 metres. Just as the incline starts to level off we meet a choice of arrow directions, which is where we turn left up a narrow slope, which now wriggles up again until stopping at a local road. We turn right along this road, that services a number of ‘high end’ properties, with extensive gardens and driveways. Once the tarmac disappears, then gravel and mud reappear and in a short while we meet a gate across the road; here we turn left and leave behind the fabulous views into Winchester from the top of Olivers Battery. Down car park in 200 metres. Within the car park a gate now takes us through a small wood and another gate opens out onto the Downs, with breathtaking views to the North and East across mid Hampshire. At this point we turn right, keeping on top of the hill, for 200 metres, as far as the tarmac path that crosses our trail. We turn left down the hill and begin a long and occasionally slippery stretch, as far as the lower car park. Just in front us now is Shawford Station (a popular commuter destination) and the road bridge that we proceed underneath to emerge once again opposite The Bridge Inn.
This left turn takes us uphill for a few strides then commences a long and very gradual down slope stroll, up to a kilometre’s worth towards Silkstead. Long before actually reaching that hamlet we turn left at the first footpath to appear, which also picks up a section of the Monarchs Way (purported to have been King Charles I escape route from the defeat at the Battle of Waterloo in 1651, some 615 miles that ended at Brighton). This fresh gravel/cinder path aims us towards some farm outbuildings, then a gate, then the early beginnings of Shepherds Lane; as houses begin to speckle the route. The road takes a sharp left, then a right, as we now join the actual tarmac drive, which continues for around 600 metres up to the corner, passing Shepherds Down School, then immediately after taking a sharp right (photo 5) under the M3 motorway tunnel (follow the Monarchs Way Arrow) and emerging beside Otterbourne Road, near the top of Shawford Down. Our route departs now from the Monarchs Way as we veer left, carefully crossing the road and turning into the top of Shawford
A warm welcome awaits all walkers, since many Itchen Way foot travellers pause here on the final leg of their trip into Winchester.
It’s always good to be prepared. Here’s some tips for your walk… • Remember high visibility clothing, vest or sash are ideal. Be seen at all times. • Robust footwear, walking boots, good sturdy trainers – normal house shoes not recommended. • A torch (for gloomy days), mobile phone and a whistle (personal protection and safety). • Make sure you take your rubbish home to keep our countryside clean and help the environment. • Dog walkers – take a supply of poop scoop bags and for hot days water & portable bowl. • Be ‘Tick Aware’ when enjoying the countryside. Obesity by Emma O’Connor MRCVS, Anton Vets, Andover Sadly this is the time of year when we all think about our size and shape… and it’s no different for pets I’m afraid. It is believed that as many as 50% of dogs and cats in the UK are currently overweight or obese. This has many implications for their health and leads to an increased risk of Diabetes, Heart disease, Osteoarthritis and even some forms of Cancer. So what causes obesity? 1. Overfeeding (including Christmas!) 2. Lack of exercise 3. Neutering is known to be a risk factor for gaining weight, with neutered animals requiring an estimated 25-30% reduction in calorie intake compared to an unneutered animal. 4. Some diseases can cause obesity. These include underactive thyroids which decrease metabolism and activity levels, overactive adrenal glands which cause an increased appetite, and osteoarthritis which reduces an animal’s ability to exercise. 5. Some medications can cause weight gain, especially drugs like steroids which will increase an animal’s appetite. In the majority of cases however it is overfeeding and lack of exercise which are the main factors causing obesity. So how can we change this? Overfeeding is usually the result

of too many extra treats as well as not properly measuring out the required amount of food every day. Many people rely on giving what seems to be a reasonable amount of food to their animals, or even just allowing them to eat whenever and whatever they want. It is a common misconception that animals will only eat what they need. Most commercial diets will give a feeding guideline on the packet. Weigh out daily what is recommended. If treats are to be given during the day, then reduce the amount of food accordingly. It is also important to remember that these are only guidelines, and many dogs and cats will need less than the recommended amounts to maintain a healthy weight. If you have a cat that goes outside and is overweight despite controlling its food, you may need to consider that it is maybe eating elsewhere. It has been known for cats to sneak into other houses via cat flaps or open windows and steal food. Neighbours with good intentions may also offer food and treats if a cat spends a lot of time around their house. As with humans exercise plays an important part in maintaining good health and weight. The average dog needs at least an hour walk a day, with many breeds needing more than this. Exercise is also important for cats, so look for ways to encourage your cat to move around more, such as providing climbing frames and toys to play with. If your vet suggests your pet may be overweight, don’t be offended. Instead see it as a positive step towards changing their diet and lifestyle for a happier, longer life. @mlggazettesnews

DRIVE • Alcohol and drugs – including alcohol and drug use among young people, and how this links with the issue of drink and drug driving There are a number of reasons that students may not initially be receptive to road safety teaching. For example, they may: • Think they ‘know it all’ and road safety is for ‘babies’ • Already be taking risks on roads (for example, mucking about on busy roads, driving without a licence or taking illegal drugs and driving) • Feel invincible - road crashes happen to someone else, not them. They think their youth and fast reaction times will keep them out of trouble • Have a misunderstanding of the true extent of deaths and injuries on roads and just how at risk they are as young people. However, young people are likely to have witnessed risky behaviour on roads and grasp road safety issues easily as they deal with roads every day. They also may well have experienced, or heard of, someone in their community being hurt or killed in a road crash, and therefore understand that death and serious injury is a reality on roads. Effective road safety teaching for this age range should:
• Require students to think for themselves and conduct original research • Be discussive and creative, and related to students’ real lives • Involve real-life projects (such as devising and running a campaign to get parents and students to ‘belt up’) not just class-room learning • Explore the dangers and consequences of risk-taking, and the benefits of making safe and sustainable choices • Explain clearly that road safety is about stopping deaths and serious injuries and therefore it is crucial to take it seriously – particularly as these students are in the highest risk group for dying or being seriously injured on roads. Sparsholt College Group makes commitment to support students and staff with their mental health and wellbeing Sparsholt and Andover College has reaffirmed their commitment to staff and students by signing up to a brand new national mental health and wellbeing charter, which reflects the existing work of the college but provides a framework of recognition. This charter has been created by the Association of Colleges in conjunction with mental health experts. The 11-point document includes commitments to: • Promoting equality of opportunity and challenging mental health stigma • Providing appropriate mental health training for staff • Providing targeted individual mental health support where appropriate Colleges across England teach and train 2.2 million people each year - including 685,000 young people. Every year, 1 in 10 young people experience a mental health problem and 1 in 5 young people aged 16-24 experience a common mental illness such as anxiety or depression at any one time. Add to these facts, 75% of adults with a diagnosable mental health problem experience their first symptoms before the age of 24 means Sparsholt and Andover College plays a vital role in supporting the mental health and wellbeing of its students and staff. Julie Milburn, Principal Designate and Safeguarding Lead for Sparsholt College Group, said: “We are delighted to sign this mental health and wellbeing charter on behalf of our students and staff. Harrow Way students complete HIOWAA LifeLines Challenge Students from Harrow Way Community School have successfully completed the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIOWAA) LifeLines Challenge. A trip to the Air Ambulance’s base at Thruxton to meet the team and visit the training suite concluded the four part challenge which the students have been working on since last July. Harrow Way has long given first aid training a high priority with a commitment to deliver certificated first aid courses to all Key Stage 4 students as part of its ‘Be Ready’ programme. The challenge started with the HIOWAA team visiting the school to deliver a session which demonstrated how to respond in an emergency and the importance of teamwork and communication in these situations. During the visit the team also demonstrated what happens during a HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service) mission. Trained and briefed it was then over to the students to complete the remaining parts of the challenge – ‘Spread the word’ and ‘Get fundraising’. To raise awareness students made a short video highlighting the charity's work, running costs and how they serve the community. This was shown to fellow students. To raise funds for the charity they worked with Harrow Way’s Business Studies department successfully completing the £10 challenge, which they turned into £100 by selling sweets and crisps. During their reward trip to the airbase the students had the opportunity to visit Air Ambulance’s training suite, see some of the equipment used and have a question and answer session with some of the team. Harrow Way’s Site and Facilities Manager Steve Badby who delivers all of the school’s first aid training commented: “I hope that this will be the first of many groups that we can get through this valuable project as, not only does it benefit the charity but also the students who take part. Hatherden School Receives Gold Award! Hatherden CE Primary School in Andover has recently received a Woodland Trust Gold Award enabling the setting to become a ‘green school’. In order to win this prestigious title, children got involved in various activities including tree planting, visiting a local woodland, reducing carbon emissions and recycling. Alongside this, staff were required to bring the great outdoors, wildlife and green issues into the classroom for all children to experience. Children from Reception all the way up to Year 6 have enjoyed learning about how woodlands can be protected, restored and developed with “Fabulous atmosphere” Zoe Lyons the school’s ‘Eco Team’ leading the way. Karen Letten, Woodland Trust’s engagement manager, added: “The Woodland Trust promotes a range of opportunities to stimulate a child’s imagination and sustain their interest in woods and trees. As the school reaches specific activity milestones, they will receive bronze and silver certificates and then an attractive wooden plaque which acknowledges they’ve achieved the environmental accolade of a gold award!” Hatherden’s certificate and plaque will be proudly displayed in the school office very shortly for children, parents, staff and visitors to see upon arrival. Portuguese Custard Tarts Method
Ingredients • 150g golden caster sugar • 2 pieces of lemon peel • 2 cinnamon sticks • 275ml whole milk • 20g plain flour, plus extra for dusting • 15g cornflour • 1 vanilla pod, seeds scraped • 3 medium egg yolks, plus 2 whole egg • 375g ready rolled all butter puff pastry • 3tbsp icing sugar • 1tsp ground cinnamon, for dusting • caramel sauce – to add
1. Place the lemon pieces, cinnamon and vanilla pod into a pan with 100ml water and 275ml milk and bring to a boil and then take off the heat and leave to infuse. Meanwhile, beat together the eggs, egg yolks and sugar with an electric whisk until the mixture is pale and thick. Gradually, pour the hot infused milk over the eggs and beat continuously until combined. In the small bowl, mix the flour, cornflour and with a splash of milk until you have a smooth paste and then pour into the egg mix and beat together. 2. Pour everything back into a clean pan and bring to a simmer, whisking until the mixture thickens. Remove the cinnamon and lemon, pass through a sieve into a jug, cover the surface of the custard with cling film and leave to cool. Heat the oven to 220°C/fan 200°C/gas 7 and put a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Roll out the puff pastry on a clean work surface lightly dusted with flour, icing sugar and ground cinnamon. Cut the pastry in half and lay one sheet on top of the other. Roll the pastry sheets up like a Swiss roll and cut the roll into twelve slices about 1cm thick. It is easier if the pastry is chilled, so chill for a few minutes before slicing if it is proving difficult. 3. Lay each of the pastry slices flat on the work surface and roll them out into 10cm discs with a rolling pin. Press a pastry disc into each of the wells of a buttered muffin tray and divide the custard evenly between the pastry cases. Bake the tarts for 18-20 minutes on the preheated baking sheet, or until the custard has puffed up and is pale golden-brown, and the pastry is crisp and goldenbrown. Allow to cool in the tin. Before serving dust with some cinnamon and icing sugar.
