It’s good to talk – support groups offer befriending service for residents Volunteer support groups across Test Valley are offering befriending services for people self-isolating during the coronavirus pandemic.

There are dozens of groups providing a range of support to hundreds of people across the borough, from picking up food and prescriptions, to running errands.

But with an increasing number of individuals struggling with the isolation lockdown brings, groups are increasing their focus on making sure that residents don’t feel alone. And with the growing demand for befriending services, all those who signed up to the national NHS volunteer scheme are being encouraged to make contact with their local support groups to see if they need any help.

Those who may benefit from a befriending phone call themselves can access any support they may need by getting in touch with their local group, too. They can also do this via the Test Valley Community Helpline, who will help them make contact with the right people.

Residents and NHS volunteers can find the support groups’ contact details using an interactive map or table at www.unityonline.org.uk/coronavirussupport-groups Leader of Test Valley Borough Council, Councillor Phil North, said: “Coronavirus poses a very serious health risk but the impact of isolation brings with it its own wellbeing challenges.

“The amazing volunteer support groups operating all across the borough continue to do a fantastic job dropping

off food and prescriptions and helping with a variety of other errands, and this will of course continue going forward.

But they are also looking at offering help in the form of someone to talk to. They often spend time chatting to people when taking them supplies but they want to get the message out there to others who don’t necessarily need help with practical tasks but who would benefit from hearing a friendly voice at the end of the phone.

“And with the work of the NHS volunteers starting to reduce, it would be brilliant if those volunteers could get in touch with their local support groups to see if they need any help with their befriending services. Similarly, I would encourage anyone who thinks they would benefit from a befriending phone call to get in contact either with our volunteers on the community helpline, or via their local group directly.”

The council is also working with its community services partner, Unity, to run the Test Valley Community Helpline, which puts people in contact with their local volunteer groups if they aren’t able to contact them direct.

Praise For Groups As Recovery Phase Begins The leader of Test Valley Borough Council has praised the efforts of community groups as the borough begins to enter the early phases of the recovery stage in response to the Covid19 pandemic.

A number of local groups set up across Test Valley have helped thousands of people get access to medication, food or just a friendly person to talk to if they felt isolated or vulnerable. Together with its community partner, Unity, the council has offered its help and financial backing to the groups to help them serve their local communities. The Test Valley Community Hotline has also been set up to offer a route for support and has been widely utilised. Now, as these groups begin to help the community look ahead and enter into the recovery phase, councillor Phil North has praised how the local organisations have risen to the challenge presented by the pandemic.

Leader, councillor North, said: “The imApact these groups have had in our borough has been amazing and I am extremely grateful to every single person who stood up to be counted. This was, and still is, a completely unknown situation and these groups have made an immense difference to our communities.

“To everyone who has taken part, I say thank you. We, as a council, have sought to support where possible, either with our financial help or by deploying our staff out and about with food parcels, and

the Test Valley Community Hotline.” With the number of calls having significantly dropped on Sundays over the last few weeks, the hotline will now be run Monday to Saturday and operate six days a week.

However, staff will remain available on Sundays for emergencies and can be accessed via Hampshire’s county-wide hotline on 0333 370 4000.

Unity chief executive, Terry Bishop, said: “The Test Valley Community Helpline was a reactive response to the needs of isolated people at the start of the pandemic. In partnership with TVBC, groups across the borough and hundreds of volunteers, a groundswell of support for people has been possible and we are justly proud. To know that thousands of people have been assisted in this way, is what 'voluntary action' is all about and Test Valley as a whole has been exceptional. “We would like to express our thanks to everyone and in particular, the volunteers. We hope that they will talk to our Unity Volunteer Hub to continue to offer their time in the future.”

From its naval history to its stories from the Doomsdays era, Hampshire has always been a county with a rich treasure trove of heritage. As Britain and indeed Hampshire emerges from yet another chapter in its historic past, here is another handful of quirky facts deep from Hampshire’s fascina ng vaults.

There was hardly a village, town or community that was not touched by the English Civil war and certainly many of the great estates were forced into ac on.

One such great manor house was Basing House which was a Cavalier stronghold.

The eventual victory for Thomas Cromwell came a�er a long series of sieges and among those under siege at the me and taking refuge at the Hampshire estate was the renowned Inigo Jones whose very clothes were taken from him upon capture. Basing House, which according to reports was similar in stature and importance to Hampton Court, was ransacked and set alight. Today, the house no longer exists as through the years all remaining stones were removed.

Following the Ba le of Trafalgar, many of the ships that had loyally served under Nelson were either repurposed or even destroyed. Thankfully HMS Victory, Nelson’s own ship did not have such a fate and remains to this day as the oldest warship s ll in commission. However both HMS Victory and the Leviathan, another grand ship that had played its part in the war, took rather humbler posi ons as prison ships moored at Portsmouth throughout the late 1810s.

Prison ships were typically used to house prisoners who were to be transported to Australia and America for their crimes. Although the Leviathan sadly no longer exists, HMS Victory is very much s ll a living part of history and remains to this day in its home at Portsmouth.

Britain has its very own Camembert! No doubt if you are local to Hampshire you did! The Tunworth is a county favourite but has also drawn widespread delight from some of the largest culinary names in Britain. Nigel Slater himself once commented that the “My favourite mel ng cheese is a ripe Tunworth” and Raymond Blanc also echoed similar sen ments when he commented that it is “The best Camembert in the world!”

Although Burley is known for its pre y chocolate box appeal, the village may also be able to boast having the only fire sta on in the country to have a ca le grid at the entrance of the sta on. This necessary if not slightly odd addi on is owing to the fact the village s ll upholds the commoning rights of ca le who exercise this right freely!

In 1689, New Alresford suffered near devasta on when a group of sixty-seven Irishmen and six Irishwomen came to the small se lement, claiming they were Protestants who had been cruelly treated and thrust out of their homes. In reality, they had come to a ack the small Hampshire se lement among other sites throughout England. The women carried fireballs which destroyed the market house, council house and church causing severe destruc on.

Good Bye Becky ……

Hello Georgina And £1600 from the Tesco Plastic Bag Fund

Yes, you did read correctly: Becky, who has been receptionist at Forces Re-Engineered since March 2019, left the company at the end of June. Becky had been offered the position as a driver for patient transport, something she has always wished to do. Although a little sad having left the team of Forces Re-Engineered, she was quite excited to start her new job.

So, it is good by and all the best wishes for Becky from the team.

And it is hello and welcome to Georgina, the “new voice” you will hear when you phone Forces Re-Engineered. Georgina has been truly keen to start her position as receptionist on 1st July, so much so that she shadowed Becky over the last two weeks in June. The team wholeheartedly welcomed her and they are sure the customers will too. Georgina has worked with Andover College, having been issued with the task of dealing with health and wellbeing, including mental health and the problems veterans are facing.

Well, with all this happening, there were amazing news: A £1600 donation from Tesco out of their plastic bag fund. Something the company was extremely grateful to receive. The money will help towards building improvements within the workshop. Concentrating on easing the problems faced by the physical disabilities of the veterans.

Start from the Hare and Hounds Pub, Charlton Down, Andover, SP11 0JA about 4 miles North of Andover Town Centre. This pub is not open on Mondays, although the car park is always available.

On leaving the car park we must turn right up the road for 200 metres, regre ably with no footpath, where we meet a marked path on the right just a�er ‘Dartracks’, and taking this we aim down the middle of a wide field. This weaves through a small copse and con nues into the right side of a new field, culmina ng in a downslope walk to the A343 main road on the edge of Enham Alamein.

The tarmac road climbs easily past houses, both old and modern before melding into a Permissive Byeway which sets off another kilometre of gentle climbing. This track was once a Drovers Road, from the distant past, which enabled farmers to move ca le and produce around the area, from village to village. Now returning to the climb, a Memorial Park (dedicated to the memory of the local World War II fatali es) is set out extensively on the le�, shortly followed by a recent housing development, un l emerging onto a local road, but where we con nue straight towards Andover.

Not to worry though. As the gate on the right is our next des na on and starts a new climb away from town.

Beneath us on the right is the church and Manor Farm buildings. We now work uphill on the right hand of a vast field for some 800 metres un l mee ng the first of a number of direc on footpath signs. This one aims us le� as we follow the edge of the field round and up to the next sign and turn le� again, sending us down into a valley, where there is yet another footpath choice - ours takes us right at a diagonal across this new expanse, with panoramic views all around.

The en re walk is fairly exposed being on top of the Downs, which can mean that windy days are bracing on this challenging and varied ou ng of around 5 miles.

Regular walkers will complete this in around 100 minutes, but distrac ons along the way can easily extend that.

At this point we turn right and commence a gentle traverse through the village, first passing the buildings and offices for the Enham Trust, which provides vital work opportuni es for disabled people, who would otherwise be le� unemployed. Shortly a�erwards going down the High Street we next pass the General Store (and Post Office) on the right, then we take the le� hand road up Anton Lane leading away from the A343.

Going down this new narrower trail, we meet a tarmac path where we turn right and follow the blue signs that target ‘Nature Reserve’, a le� turn then swivel down to the main road again. Taking great care in crossing the road we aim straight ahead and leave behind the sign for Andover and the Nature Reserve as we target a visit to St. Michaels and All Angels Church (which involves a right turn up a gravel road). Records of this church can be traced back to 1241 and, notably the tower is unusual in that the cladding is using mber shingles. Once this visit is complete we need to return to the road again and turn right, keeping firm right once again along the footpath that only takes us 100 metres then halts.

This halts abruptly at a line of trees with a Byeway Sign (a popular theme around Andover) where we turn right and con nue for just 300 metres up to a farm track that cuts across our passage. With a le� turn here we are finally commencing the ‘home run’, about 400 metres up to the road with some well worn tractor grooves to nego ate. Once up roadside, the Hare and Hounds is on the right directly beside the footpath.

Stars in the grass Exotic and striking in appearance, orchids can be found in a diverse range of habitats – between now and September is the perfect time to see them in full colour.

Early purple orchid As its name suggests, the early purple orchid is one of the first of our native orchids to bloom, strong enough to grow in the light shade of woodland or out in the open grassland of a road verge. Even when not in flower, it is identifiable by its glossy green leaves with dark purple blotches. It remains relatively common but has declined in recent decades due to urban development and modern farming methods. When the flowers first open they have a sweet scent like honey, but once pollinated the flowers smell like the urine of a tomcat! It is thought this may be to warn insects that the flower is no longer worth pollinating.

Green-winged orchid Similar in appearance to the early purple orchid, the green-winged orchid can be distinguished by its narrow, unspotted leaves and the distinctive veined hoods that sit above its flower, which give it its name. Until the advent of modern farming this orchid was one of the most widespread and common grassland species. Intolerant of artificial fertilisers and herbicides, it has disappeared from half of its historical range and is now mostly confined to nature reserves.

Pyramidal orchid The pyramidal orchid is the county flower of the Isle of Wight. This orchid is easy to identify from the bright pink, pyramid-shaped cluster of flowers on top of the stem. Botanists did not appreciate the close relationship between pyramidal and green-winged orchids until scientists unravelled the plants’ DNA. The

association is surprising as there is very little in common about the appearance of their flowers. The pyramidal orchid, which flowers between June and August, sports a long spur containing nectar to entice moths to drink.

Bee orchid The bee orchid is a master of mimicry and has evolved to look like its main pollinator – the longhorn bee. Bizarrely, this bee is rarely found in the UK so the bee orchids found here appear to be self-pollinated – the plant’s male pollen sacs drop onto the female stigma allowing self-pollination to take place. Its windborne seeds germinate freely allowing rapid colonisation of small patches of bare ground. This ability means that short-lived populations turn up in unlikely places such as on the edge of car parks. The bee orchid is, however, at its best in parched sunny habitats and can be abundant where the ground has been disturbed.

When admiring orchids, please remember the immature plants that may surround the flowering spike. Avoid trampling future flowers by keeping to the paths and thoroughly checking where you put your feet..

One of the problems we worry about at this me of year is that of dogs in hot cars.

We’re all aware of this and know that the inside of a car can get very hot in summer (at 22C air temperature outside, the inside of a car can reach 47C within an hour) so any animal le� inside may overheat developing hyperthermia and dehydra on. If this is untreated then the animal can die. I use the word “animal” as this applies to all pets, not just dogs! The obvious way to prevent this is to not leave pets in a car when it’s hot. However, some mes it is unavoidable so what can you do to prevent the problem?

Cover the windscreen with a blanket or sunscreen

Leave windows and sunroof open (though not wide open!)

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU SEE A DOG IN A CAR? Firstly, it is important to see if it is distressed or not but don’t be intrusive!

Disturbing the dog and causing it to bark will actually make things worse as it will lose fluid through its mouth and being ac ve will make it ho er.

In short, if the dog seems calm, leave it be. If it is in distress then get help at once – dial 999 but do not break into the vehicle yourself unless advised to by the police (otherwise it can be classed as criminal damage).

If your dog is hyperthermic then it is important to cool it down. The best way to do this is to cover it in a wet sheet. Please note that the water should be cool but not cold otherwise shock may result. NEVER use ice! Veterinary a en on should be sought quickly as fluids via a drip will be needed.

We’re very fortunate that everyone already seems well aware of this and we actually see less than one case of hyperthermia a year! It’s s ll too many but it is good to see that the publicity does help in this case.
