Dear Residents, What incredible weather we have had recently. I do hope it continues for the children and the summer holidays. I know it can sometimes be too warm, but at least we can get out and about, have barbecues, meet friend and neighbours and let the children run around, while we sit and have a well-earned glass of wine, or two. Long may this continue. Your local magazine continues to be a source of good local trades and services. We are here to provide you with the help you need, in the house and for yourself. The articles are hopefully interesting too and give you some reading in the garden, or with your feet up on the sofa after a long day at work. Money on my mind... the Martin Lewis column He’s the UK’s leading money saving expert - a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people’s pockets as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers. In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at how we can repair our credit score. Let’s be honest, the last couple of years haven’t been kind to our finances. The good news is the ability to rescue and repair that credit rating is within our own hands, and with a concerted plan we can get back to where we want to be. And that’s important – having a good credit rating means gaining access to preferential interest rates; it could be the difference between being able to buy a house, or rent a flat, or not; and it also gives us peace of mind that if an emergency crops up we can lean on financial support. When it comes to improving

our credit score, ﬁrst check your current rating – with the likes of Experian or Equifax – and know what you’re dealing with. When you’ve done that, see about disassociating yourself from others who may be pulling you down with their own chequered credit history - their activity may be negatively impacting yours. Next, get yourself signed up on the electoral roll. It’s a great way for credit agencies to be able to verify who you are and adds a layer of authenticity to any application.

Spring cleaning your ﬁnances is another really sensible option. Many of us have old credit cards or bank accounts that we don’t use. They may seem harmless on the face of it, but they all represent risk as far as your credit score is concerned. Next, start investing in your credit future. Using a credit card may seem a peculiar way of improving your credit, but done sensibly it will. And by sensibly, I mean use it for everyday purchases on the speciﬁc understanding you’ll clear the balance at the end of each month. Doing this will boost your credit rating and prove to any lender that you can be trusted. Finally, if you can’t afford to clear your full balance at the end of the month, at least pay off more than the minimum payment. Mending your credit score won’t be achieved overnight, but your future self will thank you for your efforts today!

From Downton to Pamela Anderson The evolution of actress Lily James. In terms of career transformations, Lily James has been through many. Councillor’s Column I’m pleased to confirm that Test Valley Borough Council has submitted a hugely ambitious £18.5m bid to the government’s Levelling Up Fund - which if successful will help rapidly accelerate the Andover Masterplan. Launched in March this year, the second round of the £4.8bn Levelling Up Fund aims to improve infrastructure across the country, with a particular focus on helping to regenerate town centres and high streets. If successful the money would be used to extend the riverside walk along Western Avenue, demolish the former magistrates’ court building preparing the way for the well-being quarter and creating a spectacular new cultural hub in the town centre which would include the relocation of The Lights theatre. All of these elements having been backed by the public during our extensive Masterplan consultation. There’s no question that it’s an incredibly competitive process - and although Andover is situated in a relatively affluent borough there are pockets of deprivation that are hidden in the averages. We are, therefore, confident that we can make a compelling argument for the town and we will do everything we possibly can to give us the very best chance of securing the funds. We should hear whether or not we are successful in September, so keep your fingers crossed. Whilst it’s only Andover that fits the criteria for potential Levelling-Up money we are also continuing to work hard on the Romsey Masterplan. More about that soon.

Wearing my County Council hat, I know the booking system for the tip divides opinion. Whilst many people appreciate the certainty of not having to queue, I know others find it frustrating, especially if you’re carrying out some spur of the moment DIY project. Earlier this year the 14

County Council decided they were keeping the booking system, which, on balance, I think was the right decision. Now that Covid restrictions are over, booking capacity has increased and at a County Council meeting last year I got a commitment from the Cabinet member to end the one visit per 7-day rule, which duly happened. In recent months, I have been asking for the introduction of same-day bookings for all Household Waste Recycling Centres in Hampshire. Lately it has been possible to book same day appointments for six sites in Hampshire but the computer said no to the others, including Andover and the Romsey facility in Bunny Lane. I’m pleased to report that this has now been sorted and same-day appointments are now enabled. Finally, it was great to jointly host with the leader of the opposition two ‘Be a Councillor’ events in both Andover and Romsey last month. As we head towards Test Valley elections next May, I think it’s important we give people a flavour of what it’s like to be a Councillor and explain how they go about standing for election. A Design for Life… The Kevin McCloud Column Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the affable architectural business owner talks about individuality and belief. I think sometimes people look at architecture as something that’s unattainable by us; it’s something by which we feel the need to call in help, to pursue the talents and experience of someone else in order to get us to where we want to be. Yet the reality is very different. Anyone can start with an idea or a concept; slowly, gradually, carefully acquiring skills so as to be able to turn some of those thoughts and ambitions into reality. And the reward from that is two-fold – naturally you can do something that is based on your own timeframe and your own budget; but more importantly, forevermore you can look at

something that you produced and know it came from within, it came from the heart, and it addressed that incredibly special element that exists in all our lives where we invest emotion and energy into what are, otherwise, inanimate objects. And this is a very human trait that is vital where architecture and, by extension, our homes, are concerned. It’s the fact that to anyone else, the space will ultimately mean something else versus how you interpret it; and to some people it may just mean nothing at all. There may be no tangible connection or emotion that comes from it. Yet when we produce, envisage, imagine and create a path for something that is our own creation and our own production, we add into it an element that is bespoke, that is individual and that, you would hope, will still hold a legacy for who we are and who we were in that very moment we created it, for decades to come.

That’s why I always want to encourage individuality in people who are passionate about putting their own ﬁngerprint on their homes. There are really no bad decisions… providing you obey the basics of construction, that is! So rather than just follow the guidelines and the trends and the fashions of the populous, get out there and ﬁnd your own… and more than that, make that reality yourself, if you can, rather than calling in someone else. That, to me, is the biggest thrill when I look in on the projects others have created. To see their own work is to understand the person, and only by understanding each other can we ever truly move forward.

Five Alive It can often feel like a perennial uphill struggle when it comes to getting your young ones to consume their ‘ﬁve a day’, so why not try these handy tips below, and see if they don’t help your little ones stave off hunger whilst keeping healthy at the same time. 1. Healthy junk food Try making your own healthy junk food using good quality lean meat for burgers. Kids can join in with the preparation, and if you must relent with a dollop of ketchup then do so. Also consider swapping desserts that are high in reﬁned sugars with easy-to-make fresh fruit ice lollies made from fruit juice and pureed fruits. 2. Proper provenance Some kids can spot a hidden mushroom a mile off, so sometimes it’s best to be upfront about fruit and vegetables. Education is key to any negotiation, so explain to your young ones where their food has come from and why each thing is so good for them. You

may well get them more interested in what they are eating. 3. Appearance Try to make sure your child’s food not only tastes good but looks good too. Mini portions, chicken skewers or bite-sized pieces of fruit will look enticing, even artistic, whilst keeping your kids healthy and boosting creativity at the same time! 4. The fridge shelf Sometimes the fact we reach for junk food or occasional snacks can be simply down to a lack of accessible or appealing alternatives. A low shelf in the fridge with cut-up fresh fruit and other healthy foods means hungry children have somewhere to go that’s easy to get to and packed with nutritious nibbles. 5. Get involved Lay ingredients out in bowls and let your youngsters ﬁll and fold their own wraps, or choose their favourite toppings for tasty homemade pizzas. Even the most uninspiring of meals takes

on another dimension when our young people are involved and can take pride in its creation. It’s amazing how being involved in the planning and preparation of a meal can stimulate a child’s appetite too! And a bonus suggestion… Clear the plate or clear up afterwards! Finally, if all else fails, tell your youngsters that those clearing their plates do not need to help with the clearing away afterwards. While it won’t necessarily endear them any more to some of the greens in front of them, it may sway them into polishing off the portion, so in that respect, everyone wins!

Club welcomes Newcomer! The WEOS concert at the Fairground Hall, Weyhill on Thursday 18 August will feature LEWIS SCOTT, a relative newcomer to the electronic keyboard circuit, making his debut appearance for the Club.

Lewis lives near Driffield in East Yorkshire and his concerts include a mix of sounds and music genres, including orchestral, film themes, show tunes, big band and popular selections from across the decades – all played in his own musical style and interpretation. He initially experienced the power of

the theatre organ during a visit to the Scarborough Fair Collection and was inspired to learn that particular type of instrument. In September 2016, he won the Young Theatre Organist of the Year Competition and has since performed numerous electronic keyboard concerts throughout the UK. In his spare time, Lewis is an avid photographer and plays cricket when he can. He also enjoys collecting and restoring organs and has an interest in wood turning. The concert commences at 7.30 p.m. (doors open at 7.00 p.m.) and tickets priced at £6.00 are available on the night. Refreshments can be obtained during the interval. The (New) Seven Wonders of the World The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World have all but succumbed to old age or natural disaster – with the Great Pyramid at Giza the only survivor. Thankfully, there’s a new breed of mighty manmade monuments around, and all well within the grasp of any traveller willing to seek them out. 1. CHICHÉN ITZA, MEXICO The ancient city of Chichén Itza is located on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. This well-known Mayan city served as a religious, political and economic centre for several hundred years. The Pyramid of Kulkulkán is probably the most recognised ruin of Chichén Itza, standing at 80ft high and incorporating a total of 365 huge stone steps. 2. CHRIST THE REDEEMER, BRAZIL This statue of Jesus is one of Rio de Janeiro’s most widely recognised monuments. It stands 98.5ft tall atop the summit of Mount Corcovado, which itself rises more than 2,300ft. With an outstretched armspan of 92ft, and a weight of approximately 700 tonnes, the concrete and soapstone leviathan is the destination of many a pilgrimage. 3. THE COLOSSEUM, ITALY Gladiator contests, group combat, battle re-

enactments and other productions were staged at the Colosseum to an audience of almost 50,000. Today, even after some renovations in the 1990s, the wear and tear from poor weather, natural disaster and vandalism show, but they can’t take away from this iconic Italian sight. And while you’re there, why not soak up Rome’s unique culture at the same time? 4. THE TAJ MAHAL, INDIA This 42-acre marble mausoleum complex located in Agra is a stunning Indian landmark. Construction started in 1631, spanning more than two decades, requiring more than 20,000 labourers, and costing several million rupees. 5. GREAT WALL OF CHINA, CHINA The Great Wall of China is without doubt a modern marvel and rightfully belongs amongst the other seven Wonders. Contrary to popular belief, the wall isn’t one continuous structure - it’s actually made up of several separate structures that cover approximately 4,500 miles. Pack your walking boots! 6. PETRA, JORDAN Located in south-west Jordan are the ruins of the ancient city of Petra. Massive temples,

tombs and monuments have been cut into the surrounding sandstone cliffs and were immortalised in 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Perhaps the most impressive Petra structure is the Sik alKhazneh, an elaborately carved and embellished tomb. 7. MACHU PICCHU, PERU Built in the 15th century, this ancient Incan city is nestled between two peaks – Machu Picchu (Old Peak) and Huayna Picchu (New Peak) at an amazing elevation of 7,710ft. It is often called the lost city of the Incas because it was hidden amidst the lush forest and clouds of Peru for more than three centuries. Now rediscovered, it is a sight to be admired, and one that retains every ounce of mystical promise.

Greenfingers… the Alan Titchmarsh column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about the most common mistakes we make in our gardens. I always say, as a golden rule, prevention is better than cure, so with that in mind here are my top seven gardening mistakes… and how to avoid them! Firstly, you can have too much of a good thing! Less is more when it comes to good gardening, and if you cram too much together it’ll look a mess, or worse still, will die!

but only if they’re left in the ground! Another big thing is failing to prepare your soil. Give your plants a chance by ensuring the soil they’re in is in good condition. A simple testing kit will let you know if you need to re-compost, add fertiliser, or simply switch to a different soil type. You should also steer clear of what I call ‘the bullies’! My ﬁnal piece of advice is to try to spread the love around your garden. Few of us have an endless budget with which to run riot in our green spaces, and it’s better to do a little at a time across the board, than blow it all in one part of the garden, leaving the rest of it looking forlorn and bereft.

Next, always ensure what you’re pulling up are weeds and not slow-developing flowers. We can sometimes find ourselves being particularly ruthless with what grows in our gardens, so remember, everything grows at a different rate and sometimes the most mundane of plants will flourish to become the most beautiful…

Remember, no two gardens are the same, in much the same way that no two gardeners are the same, and you’re never going to get it right all of the time. The most important thing is to be organised and put the effort in – if you do that, the rewards will very often follow close behind.

The Kitchen Spa Why spend a fortune on fancy beauty products when you can raid the kitchen cupboards to make salon-quality treatments at home? 1. Brown sugar buzz body scrub Mix brown sugar, leftover coffee grounds, olive oil and a drizzle of honey. Brilliant bath bombs Mix one cup of baking soda, half a cup of citric acid and half a cup of Epsom salts then separately mix three teaspoons of olive oil, two teaspoons of essential oil, one teaspoon of water and food colouring. Add wet mixture slowly to dry until you have a sandy texture you can pack into moulds, then leave to dry before using in the bath. *Beneﬁts: Epsom salts soften skin, oils

relax, and baths generally make your day better! 6. Peppermint chapstick Add 1oz of beeswax and three heaped teaspoons of coconut oil into a saucepan and heat on low until they are completely melted. Next pour the mixture into a container, adding 10-15 drops of peppermint essential oil and stir well. Now decant into a container and dab onto the lips whenever you feel you need a tingly revival. *Benefits: Peppermint has been scientifically proven to offer a range of health benefits, including killing germs, relieving pain, improving mental function, and reducing stress.

Platinum Jubilee Volunteering Awards Hosted at the Guildhall, Andover on 7th June, the Unity Platinum Jubilee Awards took place with a full house of charity groups and individuals being recognised for their volunteering efforts over the last year. Attended by a number of dignitaries, including the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire, Mr. Kent and the Test Valley Borough Council Mayoress, Cllr. Celia Dowden the evening was alight with chatting and networking not to mention a buffet and ‘Thank you from Unity’ cupcakes! The nominations had been carefully anonymised for the judges who were randomly chosen from the community and those who were shortlisted were invited to attend the evening. Shortlisted groups across a wide range of activities were promoted including Clatford Village Store, Andover Swimming & Water Polo Club and Vaccination centres all vying for the annual Team of the Year Award. The winners in this category were Koala Community Hub who provide safe, supportive, small groups in a pressure free environment for Neurodivergent children and adults.

Unsung Hero Award sponsored by the Test Valley Mayor Cllr. Alan Dowden. The winner, Sue Smith from the Andover MIND, Ugly Duckling project for her tireless volunteering in both the Ugly Duckling shop and workshop teaching new sills and crafts and making products with donated materials as well as designing the shop window. The Modern Magazines Camper Van Daichi, our wonderful “Modern Magazines Campervan” loves a success story. This month he was very excited to be taking us to Marshfield Farm near Bath. The journey there is really quite stunning. Winding roads between beautiful, luscious green hills with views as far as the eye could see. Very soothing and Daichi purred his way there. Having bought an ice-cream parlour just a few months ago, and now serving this delicious ice-cream in our newly acquired “Wafflicious” premises on Weymouth seafront, we were really looking forward to seeing the factory and the farm for the first time. Based around a 17th Century Manor House, nestled in rolling green fields, this really is an idyllic place. Tim, alias Dad, and his wife bought the then run-down farm in 1971 and have created a haven for organically fed cows and now yummy flavoured ice-cream. Tim has worked on farms all his life and clearly loves his cows. They are well looked after. Will, his

Daichi is all smiles arriving at Marshfield Farm! son, had a passion for ice-cream from an early age and Dawn his lovely wife laughed about the amount of icecream parlours they visited in Italy on their honeymoon some years ago. In 1988 after returning from agricultural college, Will wanted to diversify the family milk business and took up the challenge to create their first ice-cream – vanilla – which still today remains one of their best sellers. What an achievement. Originally there were around 35 cows, but now, some 30 years later there are 250 cows grazing on the 1100 acres of organically farmed land. The business is thriving. Cows are miked twice a day, once at 5am and then at 4pm, seven days a week. It is a never-ending task. In between these times the happy cows merrily eat the grass in the meadows surrounding the house, factory and newly built warehouses which have been adorned with hundreds of solar panels. These not only save thousands of pounds

in electricity costs (and who would say no to that these days?) but are very eco-friendly. Planting trees, keeping bees and really taking care of the environment is at the heart of Marshfield’s philosophy. It really is a family affair with the grandchildren now running the factory and the farm, with their parents and grandparents. So, we met the cows that eat the grass, that produce the milk that makes the ice-cream, that you eat! What a production line. The dog ice-cream is a real winner. One of the best on the market and full of nutrients for our four-legged friends, Marshfield literally make thousands of these tubbed delights every week. We even met Scoop who is the face of the ice-cream! Of course, it would have been rude not to devour some of the delicious ice-cream ourselves, before leaving. Emma, who works very hard in our parlour, had a little too much and could hardly eat her dinner! I think she can be forgiven as all of the flavours are just delicious. The ice-cream parlour there, with bales of straw to sit on and slowly enjoy the creamy treats, is open at weekends to visitors during the summer, so if you fancy a bit of indulgence and a wonderful drive,

Even the cows are licking their lips! then we highly recommend a trip to the farm. Of course, there is our very own parlour too, opposite the helter skelter on the Esplanade in Weymouth. “Wafflicious Weymouth” is its name and is not only home to mouthwatering Marshfield ice-cream, but also light and delectable waffles. We have some wonderful reviews on Facebook and are delighted with all the smiles and happy faces we see every day. With regular visitors now from near and far, we are extremely pleased with what we have achieved in just four months. We are not quite a Marshfield Farm success story yet, but who knows… time will tell. Summer consultation for council’s vision in full swing as 1,000 have their say More than 1,000 people have had their say on what the future of Test Valley could look like. Earlier this summer, Test Valley Borough Council asked for residents and visitors to have their say on what matters to them in their lives across the borough. The authority is getting ready to prepare its next Corporate Plan, which is the document that sets out the council’s vision and priorities for the next four years. The current plan runs until next year, with TVBC looking to build on its themes for the new plan which will lead through to 2027. Now, more than 1,000 have had their say through community events, visits to schools

and the online survey, which can be completed here: www.testvalley.gov.uk/ corporateplan2023 The consultation period runs until August 21, with as many residents as possible being encouraged to complete the survey. The survey itself covers countryside, waste and recycling and housing among many other aspects. The results will then be brought together throughout autumn and winter, before a new Corporate Plan is created next spring. Officers will be attending community events up and down the borough over the coming weeks to speak to residents, including at last month’s Romsey’s Beggars Fair and the Andover Carnival. Leader of TVBC, councillor Phil North, said: “It’s fantastic that so many of you have had an input into what the next four years could look like, letting us know what matters to you in Test Valley. Of course, here at TVBC we look to speak to our residents to find out what they think on many occasions, and this one truly is one of the most important times to raise your hand. “We’re around halfway through our consultation and want to make sure that nobody misses the opportunity to have their say. “We need your views to help us shape the future of our council and our borough, looking at where and how we spend our money, run our services, and make the lives of those living here better all around.”

International Space Station astronauts run computer code written by Harrow Way STEM students Computer code written by Harrow Way STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) students, as part of Mission Zero 2021-2022, has been run on the International Space Station (ISS). Using software provided by the Astro Pi Mission Zero team, students wrote a simple computer programme. This programme, when run on the space station, displayed a message and humidity reading which the astronauts could see as they went about their daily tasks on the ISS. Donna Robertson, Curriculum Leader ICT and Computer explains further: “The European Astro Pi Challenge offers young

people the amazing opportunity to conduct scientific investigations in space by writing computer programs that run on Raspberry Pi computers aboard the International Space Station. It was such an exciting project for students to be involved in as not many STEM professionals, let alone students, can claim they’ve written code used in space by astronauts.” The European Astro Pi Challenge is an ESA Education project run in collaboration with the Raspberry Pi Foundation. This international project attracted thousands of students from 25 different countries to take part. Donna Robertson concludes: “As with a lot of STEM activity, one of the challenges is to encourage and increase female participation. Vets Column: Why worm?

If you own cats and dogs you will be advised by your vet to regularly worm them. Many people ask us why this is needed as they never see worms or worm eggs in their animals’ poo, but this doesn’t mean the worms aren’t there! There are also many health issues for your animals if they carry a lot of worms, and some can even be deadly. Humans can also be affected by the worms that dogs and cats carry and this is another very good reason to regularly worm your animals. So what worms do we need to worry about? Roundworm These are found in both cats and dogs. Cats will commonly pick them up from hunting infected rodents and birds, dogs are usually infected by ingesting eggs from the soil. Roundworm eggs and larvae are too small to see without a microscope so you will not see them in your animals’ poo. Puppies and kittens can also be infected at birth or shortly after, as the larvae can transfer via the placenta and milk. They cause diarrhoea, poor coat, a pot belly appearance and poor growth. They can also infect people and cause serious problems such as blindness if the larvae travel to the eyes. Tapeworm Dogs and cats can be infected by eating infected animal carcasses or ingesting fleas when grooming. You may see tapeworm segments around your animals’ bottom or in the poo if they are infected, these look like small grains of rice. They can cause irritation around the bottom, and poor 42

weight gain, but often there are no clinical signs at all. People can be infected by ingesting these tapeworm segments. Lungworm Dogs are infected by ingesting slugs and snails carrying the lungworm larvae. This may be accidental such as eating grass with small slugs on it, or playing with toys in the garden to which slugs and snails may be attached. They can cause varied signs such as coughing, exercise intolerance, bleeding problems, weight loss and neurological signs. It can also be rapidly fatal. Cats are infected by hunting and eating birds and rodents. We rarely see symptomatic infections in cats but if the burden of worms is high, they can cause respiratory symptoms such as breathing problems or coughing. You can minimise the risk of worms by regularly picking up poo, not only from your garden, but also when out walking your dog. Don’t let dogs eat poo or soil. Treat regularly for fleas to reduce the risk of tapeworm and try not to let your dog eat wild animal carcasses. Cats which hunt will need more regular worming than those who stay at home sleeping. Your vet can advise you on the best form of parasite control and frequency of dosing depending on your pets’ habits and environment.

Raymond Blanc’s Lemon Cake Introduction Lemon cake with tea is a grand tradition at Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, and it has been served here for almost 40 years. What I love about the perfect lemon cake is it’s fresh, zesty and as light as a cloud.

Ingredients (serves 8) For the lemon cake • butter, to grease the tin • 5 eggs • 300g caster sugar • 140ml double cream • finely grated zest of 3 lemons • 25ml dark rum • 1 pinch sea salt • 80g unsalted butter, melted • 240g plain flour • ½ tsp baking powder For the glaze • 50g apricot jam, warmed • finely grated zest of 1 lemon, plus 3 tbsp juice • 150g icing sugar

Method

2. Sift the ﬂour and baking powder together, then whisk into the egg mixture until smooth, spooning the mixture into the loaf tin and gently level the surface. Bake for 50 minutes, turning the tin around halfway through cooking. To test the cake, insert a small knife into the middle – if it comes out clean, the cake is cooked. 3. Turn out onto a wire rack and leave to cool for 10 minutes. 4. Lightly brush the cake all over with the warm jam. The jam creates a barrier, so the lemon glaze is not absorbed. Leave for 5 minutes.

5. Now mix the lemon zest and juice with the icing sugar in a small pan and warm over a low heat to 35°C, until smooth. If the glaze is any hotter, it will recrystallise, losing its shine and crispness. Brush the lemon glaze evenly over the top and sides of the cake and leave for a few minutes to set. 6. Finally, place the cake on a baking tray in the oven, turn off the heat and leave for 3–5 minutes to dry the glaze – it will become translucent. Allow to cool before slicing.

1. Lightly grease the loaf tin and line with greaseproof paper. Then, in a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, cream, lemon zest, rum, salt and melted butter.
