STRINGER PRESS SPRING TERM 2020 A message from the Headteacher As the clocks went forward last weekend and ushered in British Summer time we are able to reflect on one of the most turbulent times in modern history. The Spring term of 2020 will undoubtedly be remembered for the Covid-19 virus and the first time SATs, GCSE exams and A level exams have been cancelled. I know these are challenging times for all Stringer parents/carers, staff and students and I thank you for your kind words and understanding during these unsettling times for the country. Before we had an abrupt end to the term the preceding weeks had been spent preparing for exams, rehearsing and taking part in a dance spectacular at the Dome and putting on an impressive performance of “The Wooden Frock” in the Middleton Theatre. We also had the musical recital down at St. Mathias’ Church in Fiveways when students performed pieces ranging from Nirvana to Mozart. The school continues to offer such a breadth of Art, drama, sport, dance and music and we are blessed with creative students and staff willing to go the extra mile. Each week I am proud to be able to share the work and sporting achievements which takes place within the school.

The Year 11s have worked tirelessly in their classes, mock exams and offered their support and encouragement around the school. They are an excellent year group and one for the lower school to look up to with their fantastic attitude to learning and dedication to their studies. Staff and students are disappointed that students are not able to take their exams as we know how hard they had worked and they were all peaking as they reached the final hurdle. However, results are not everything and I hope they will look back on friendships, good lessons and the extra- curricular opportunities afforded to them. We will make sure we celebrate with the Year 11s once the current cloud has been lifted.

I would like to thank all those who are working on front line services over the coming weeks and hope families are able to stay safe and away from gatherings as we adhere to the new restrictions and hopefully I will be able to share more positive news of getting back to Stringer life in the not too distant future.

We are definitely in uncharted waters here and doing all we can to navigate these new and daunting ways of teaching and learning remotely and finding ways to keep physically and mentally healthy too. This is as new to us as it is to you but, rest assured, we are all trying to rise to the challenge.

The Wooden Frock The Wooden Frock The Drama Department would like to thank the cast of this year’s production, The Wooden Frock, for all of their hard work and creativity during the many months of rehearsal leading up to, and including production week.

The performances were very well received over four nights. Here are some of the reviews we received: Many congratulations to all the cast and crew for the amazing production of The Wooden Frock, in particular to Ms Ettinger for creating and directing such a stunning show. Funny, sad, thought-provoking, beautiful, uplifting, it had it all!... and to such a flawless standard. I know how much time and commitment went in to creating this show and it really paid off. The drama at Stringer is so professional it doesn’t feel like you’re watching a school production at all! Really well done to all.

Thank you all so much for such a wonderful show this week. Fabulous as ever and such a treat, as good as many things we’ve seen on a professional stage.

The cast worked so well together and were obviously having such fun, and it was so great to see them give it their all and to be so proud of what they achieved as a team. Great skills for life and such a fantastic experience to be part of a successful run, which will stay with them forever.

We loved the story - quirky and surreal with a little touch of bawdy comedy but some good messages too.

What more could you ask! Music and Staging were fantastic too - some really fabulous musicians and singers and great set. 5 star reviews all round from all of us (and our many visitors)!

This was an extraordinary play: a gift on a dull January night. It was understatedly elegant (all internal patterns and colours), laugh out loud funny (amazing, sometimes risky, comedy) and genuinely moving (actual tears from the bad King?!) I keep thinking about the energy on the stage, how emotions and stories were moving in opposing directions at the same time, and the extraordinary effect that had. And such sharp and consistent acting! There was barely a finger or hair out of place in the whole show. Thanks so very much for all the work and talent and care that this play must have demanded from the amazing staff. A fabulous feminist fairytale.

Let’s Dance 2020 Earlier this term, ‘Let’s Dance’ once again took place at The Dome in Brighton. ‘Let’s Dance’ is the most prestigious and celebrated schools dance event in the whole of the UK. With over 2000 young people taking to the stage and dozens of young leaders helping backstage.

Dorothy Stringer School took over the organisation of the event in 2005 and since then, it has grown to be the largest celebration of school dance in the UK. It plays a major role not only in encouraging our young people to be active but also in ensuring that dance and physical activity remains a high priority in educational establishments across the city.

It is a fantastic event to be part of. It takes a lot of coordination, but everyone who takes part has an amazing time, and it is great to see such a broad age range getting involved. The smiling faces of all those on the stage and the exciting routines make it a memorable event for both the children and adults taking part.

The event ran over four nights and this year included 76 schools and groups from across the city of Brighton and Hove with both children and adults taking part.

Quotes from schools: “Just wanted to say, on behalf of the 31 children, 10 members of staff and 50 odd parents that attended, how much we love Lets Dance and a big thankyou to you and your team for another amazing year! It never ceases to amaze us how well run it is and I am delighted to continue to bring increasing numbers every year. X Country Success X Country Success Year 11 student Archie was selected for the prestigious English Schools X Country Championships.

Congratulations to Archie who was selected to represent Sussex Schools at the ESAA Cross Country Championships. This is a brilliant achievement, well done Archie. We can’t wait to hear more about your Cross Country Journey!

Charlton Athletic Signing Very well done to Noah in Year 8 who has been signed for the Charlton Athletic Academy Under 13 Team.

Noah was part of the Year 7 Dorothy Stinger team that went to the national finals last year. Thank you to Mr Ford for all the work he has done with this team.

Noah was scouted by Charlton while playing for the Russell Martin Academy. He was signed after impressing the coaches in a three-month trial. He will be very busy with Charlton Athletic attending three afterschool sessions plus Saturday training and playing a match on Sundays.

Noah plays as a striker or attacking midfielder and has already scored five goals and got two assists in his first four matches for Charlton, (including three goals in two matches against Tottenham).

This is a massive achievement for Noah and we wish him and his team every success for the future, and look forward to following his football career.

British Para Table Tennis Dan, in 10MTC, is a competitive table tennis player. He has recently been accepted onto the national Futures programme with the British Para Table Tennis Association.

This is a brilliant achievement and we wish him every success for the future.

BMC Youth Open League Anya took part in the BMC Youth Open Lead, a national lead climbing competition held in Sheffield on 22 & 23 February. She qualified for the final in first place and went on to win in her category.

We are very proud of Anya’s achievements and wish her every success for the future which looks very bright.

Great Britain Cycling Apprenticeship Dylan has been competing in road and track cycling since the age of 10 and is a member of Preston Park Youth Cycling Club in Brighton. In recognition of Dylan’s development, competition results, and his potential to become a professional racing cyclist he has been selected to join the Great Britain Cycling Team as an apprentice for the 2020 season. He is one of 15 male and female youth riders to be selected from across the UK for the road and track endurance programme. Dylan now attends regular training days and weekend training camps with British Cycling coaches in various locations, including the National Cycling Centre in Manchester. He also has his weekly training programme planned and overseen by a dedicated British Cycling coach. Dylan has set himself a goal to win a national title in 2020 and to continue to develop his cycling with the aim of maintaining his place within the GB Cycling Team environment in 2021.

He is due to compete in the National Youth Track Championships; the National Youth Track Omnium Final and the National Road Circuit series. He regularly competes in the London Youth Track League at Lee Valley velodrome and takes part in selected road races in Belgium. Being recognised at a national level is a huge achievement for Dylan and is the result of his absolute dedication to the sport and his training. We look forward to hearing about Dylan’s apprenticeship with Great Britain Cycling Team and wish him luck in all his upcoming races. This is such a brilliant achievement.

World Book Day On Thursday 6 March we celebrated World Book Day, we had some brilliant entries for our ‘decorate a potato (or root vegetable) as a book character OR create a shoe box scene’ competition! Well done and thank you to everyone who entered, below are the winners and some of the entries.

The winner of the Potato Book Character is Gruffalo and Mouse by Isabel and Maja 8GRV & the winner of the Create A Book Scene in a Shoebox is Rosa 7STO.

Student Investor Challenge YTME Trading have qualified for the semi-final of this year’s London Institute of Banking and Finance Student Investor Challenge. Huge congratulations to Yann, Tristan, Mehboob and Elijah (YTME Trading) for investing so soundly over the last three months. Their Active Investor Virtual Portfolio increased from £100,000 to £116,877.80 placing them in 55th position out of 9,215 teams, including Sixth Formers, who competed around the world.

In the semi-final starts students will be tested on how well they can predict the closing price of assets. The eight most successful teams will make it to the final in The City.

Ghana Trip It seems like another lifetime ago since the Ghana Trip. The trip leaders wrote to the families of the students who went to Ghana we thought it was worth publishing it in our Newsletter.

“Not only did they do you proud but they also did us and the school proud. From the moment we got onto the plane at Heathrow, they were calm and settled, even the nervous fliers! No one made a fuss about where they were sitting on the plane (and some of them did end up sitting next to teachers). They were so calm and quiet that the BA staff made a point of telling us (on several occasions) how amazing and polite they all were and how not all school parties were as good as our students.

Watching them teach their lessons in the primary school was a joy to behold. They were all incredibly well prepared and when some of the classes proved to be more ‘able’ at English than we were led to believe, our students immediately adapted their lessons to make them more challenging – true teachers in the making!

Whilst in Tortibo village they fully immersed themselves in village life, eating all the food that was given to them (without any fuss) with some even going up for seconds because they found the jollof rice and red red so delicious! They sensibly took on the purification of their own drinking water without any prompting and obviously very successfully because we did not experience any upset tummies. The villagers were very impressed with their dancing and drumming and we were told that no other group has quite thrown themselves into the final ‘Azonto’ Dance as enthusiastically as our group did. In fact, we kept going for a lot longer than we were scheduled for, which was great fun.

Again, at the secondary school their behaviour was impeccable and incredibly respectful. They engaged with their Ghanaian counterparts asking intelligent, insightful questions and responding sensitively to sometimes difficult questions being asked of them. They fully engaged in school life even trying school dinners, a very different experience to their own. Several of our students gave excellent performances in a joint theatre production with only a morning to rehearse and all of them sang their hearts out to rapturous applause from the packed assembly hall of Ghanaian students. We are sure many of them did not believe that they could do something like that before it happened but their energy was a joy to behold.

One of the highlights for us, as staff, was to listen to their feedback at the end of the day, during circle time. Some of the thoughts and feelings shared were very insightful and I think the students got a lot out of these sessions.

The fact that our second place to stay (Samaritan Villas) did not have any running water when we arrived did not faze them; they just got on with filling their buckets from an outside tap for a bucket wash. Some of them were even overheard commenting on the fact that they only have to temporarily deal with a water shortage whereas it’s just a fact of life for many Ghanaians.

We were so impressed with how they all got on as a group and when we got to the more ‘touristy’ part of the trip; they were constantly looking out for each other as well as looking after us! One of their favourite activities was to look out for ‘Mr Holtom’s Bird Watching Face’, which ended up with many of them getting into bird watching themselves.

Again, we were completely overwhelmed by how quiet and sensitive they all were at Kakum National Park and in Elmina Slave Fort. They listened thoughtfully to our guides in both the National Park and the Fort and for those of us who have been before, we felt as though it was our first visit as we were seeing it through their eyes.

Any task we asked them to take on whether to organise a card and collection for our amazing drivers or to discuss and consider how to spend the money that they have raised, was always tackled with maturity and enthusiasm – with people always volunteering to take on a role.

Finally, the return journey could potentially have been arduous, as we had no inflight entertainment but once again, they impressed the cabin crew by simply falling asleep without any kind of fuss at all from anyone. Again, a point that was raised by the crew as we left the plane.

We hope that they all enjoyed their experience in Ghana and that the memories will stay with them for many years to come – we as staff thoroughly enjoyed their company and will certainly reflect fondly on the trip.

Confident Communications Workshop On Wednesday 22 January a group of 20 Year 10 girls took part in a Confident Communications Workshop run by The Speakers Trust and The Girls Network.

The aim of the session was to build up students’ confidence in public speaking and communication.

Young people should feel confident and important when they speak. The ability to communicate well is a skill that will have a huge impact on their lives- and possibly the lives of others. Their voices have the potential to shape the future, to inspire, innovate, teach and make people laugh; whilst the aptitude to speak and be heard is crucial if they are to be successful and make a difference.

Students were shown a variety of different techniques including: Speaking with confidence and clarity Thinking on your feet through impromptu speaking Structuring a speech and topic Understanding and using body language to emphasise words Students listened to others and took part in small groups activities, ending with a student led presentation. During the session students received group and individual feedback from The Speakers Trust’s expert trainer.

We hope everyone involved enjoyed the session, and we would like to thank The Speakers Trust and The Girls Network for coming into school to deliver the workshop.

Nature 2020 Partnership [Editor’s Note: this article was written prior to the Covid-19 outbreak so the information may have changed in response to the self-isolation guidelines] Dorothy Stringer is delighted to be a partner organisation of the Biosphere wide, yearlong programme of nature based events called Nature2020.

Throughout 2020, our local landscape will be coming alive with events celebrating the unique habitats and species of our natural environment as part of Nature2020.

Nature2020 events connecting people and nature will be springing up throughout the year and across The Living Coast, Brighton & Lewes Downs UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.

Supported by Brighton & Hove City Council, a coalition of local environmental organisations has set up Nature2020 to celebrate the richness and significance of the local environment, and actively engage more people in the care and conservation of local nature.

This year marks the end of the UN Decade on Biodiversity, and is an opportunity to reflect on the state of wildlife and conservation both globally and locally. The Nature2020 programme aims to raise awareness of, and connect people to, the environment we live and work in.

Dr Danahar awarded honarary fellowship We would like to say congratulations to Dr Danahar, Science & Environmental Science teacher who has been awarded an honorary Fellowship by the National Association for Environmental Education yesterday http://naee.org.uk/ This is an organisation that supports and promotes those who deliver environmental education and has been doing so for over 50 years.

Extra-Time Project Dorothy Stringer and other Secondary Schools in Brighton and Hove have set up a short stay alternative provision project for students in Years 7-9.

During their time on the Extra-Time Project students continue on with their main core subjects as well as having bonus top-up lessons in Life Skills, Art and Leadership.

Students also engage in enterprise and sports leadership projects, leading to organising and delivering sports tournaments to primary school students across Brighton & Hove.

The Extra Time Project is run by the Russell Martin Foundation and has so far been a great success.

Donatello Restaurant have now sponsored the centre and have agreed to continue doing so until July 2021. Playwrite Simon Stephens’ Workshop On Monday 10 February, the Drama Department welcomed Simon Stephens, playwright (Port, Herons, Punk Rock, Birdland), teacher of the Young Writers’ Programme at the Royal Court Theatre and Artistic Associate at the Lyric Hammersmith, to deliver a Q & A session to GCSE Drama students and Year 9 students intending to take Drama as a GCSE. Possibly best known for adapting Mark Haddon’s ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time’, Simon is a prolific playwright having written 32 plays for stage as well as numerous works for T.V., film and radio.

As an ex-teacher, Simon aims to encourage state school students to aspire to careers in the Arts and wants young people to consider studying, training and working in careers other than the ones they know. He spoke about inspiring young people to be whatever they wanted to be through exposing them to opportunities in the Arts, visiting theatres and helping them understand the opportunities available to them.

Through a series of student questions, he spoke openly and honestly about his early life, how he became a playwright, what inspires him to write, his plays, his characters and, if he were a biscuit, what biscuit would he be?

We left inspired and motivated by Simon’s 4 tips for successful acting, particularly Kitty Child who was given coaching from the playwright of her monologue from ‘Punk Rock’ for her up-coming Brit School audition.

We learnt that the best actors are those able to balance confidence with humility but most of all, to take chances, to do what we love and not to be afraid of failure. The Drama Department and all of the students lucky enough to attend would like to thank Simon for taking the time to visit us.

Music Recital For the Music Departments second big event of the year, we all headed of to St Matthias Church for an evening of music from our Year 10 and 11 students. For our Year 11 Rock School students, this was their final assessed performance and they sure didn’t disappoint. The evening provided us with a variety of music from rock to acoustic covers and some piano classics. A huge well done to all of our students and a big thank you to St Matthias Church and the Music department for such a musical evening.

PE & Sports PE & Sports PE & Sports Award Winners Huge congratulations to our Half Term Two PE & Sport Award Winners. We couldn’t resist adding an extra award winner this half term!

Well done to all the award winners for their continued hard work and commitment to PE and Sports and thank you to SLT members who came to present the awards. Below are the winners: Scarlett, Sports Performance - Scarlett has had some game winning performances of late in the Girls Year 7 Football team. Scarlett led the Year 7 side into the 4th round of the National Cup and the Quarter Finals of the County Cup. Scarlett was also nominated for PE effort award; see continually impresses with her commitment and determination in PE!

Jasper - Award for effort and improvement Jasper has been an asset in PE so far this year.

Jasper has shown leadership skills and is a confident and committed PE student. Well done Jasper!

Florence - GCSE/ sports studies award Florence has made an outstanding start to GCSE PE. She is hardworking and diligent.

Outside of the classroom Florence has also been a credit and has also run girls’ extracurricular girls Rugby club.

Dan, Sports Performance - Dan has been nominated by Mr Kipling for stepping up and playing in goal for the Year 11 side at late notice. He saved a penalty and numerous shots. He continues to be a big part of PE representing the Year 10 B football side and the Year 10 Rugby Team.

George, Sports Performance - George has represented Dorothy Stringer in Football and Athletics this last half term. He is part of a very strong year 8 b team who remain unbeaten in the Brighton Cup and was part of the winning Indoor Athletics Team. George is a great athlete and won the 6-lap race in this competition.

Rio, Dance Award - Rio has shown immense improvement in his technical dance ability, as well as his performance skills within the Dance clubs. He is fully committed and always in attendance. He has impressed with his enthusiasm and effort towards the Dance Show. Keep up the good work Rio, a well deserving winner this term.

PE & SPORTS TWITTER HIGHLIGHTS Well done to the Year 7 Boys and Year 10 Boys who reached the National cup last 8. Year 7’s lost on penalties.

Year 10A team’s National Cup run was 16

emphatically ended by a very good Ivybridge team. Congratulations to them and good luck in the next round. Couldn’t be more proud of the Stringer boys who behaved impeccably during their stay in Plymouth.

The Under 14 Girls were knocked out in the Semi Finals of the County Cup by a strong Cardinal Newman Team.

A Great effort from the Stringer Year 8 boys who came 4th at the Sussex School Games Sportshall Athletics. Narrowly missing out on a medal.

Year 9B’s draw 2-2 v Newman Falcons but got out on pens! It was a cracking game of football, chances both ends and proper tackling from both teams, well played all.

Our Year 7 Netball team won their game against BACA.

A group of Year 8 Girls have been attending the Game of our Own training. They are hoping to be the next leaders of Girls Football in the School by inspiring Year 7 girls to keep up their football.

Well done to the Stringer cross country teams at the Sussex Schools champs today. Some competitive races in challenging conditions

The Year 7 Rugby team won in their county cup game, it was a close win with some brilliant rugby played by both sides.

The U12 Girls Football team progressed well in the School Football National Cup this term.

RSPCA Debate :Media Reps

On Friday 13 March, a group of Dorothy Stringer students attended the RSPCA Great Debate. We came third, but were pipped to the post by one point. The winning teams were excellent but we consoled ourselves with the fact that they had had longer to prepare for it – as we signed up to the competition at the last minute.

I was immensely proud of all of them. The speakers were passionate and confident – all knew their speeches off by heart and really raised their game on the day. The observers and media officers supported the team, live tweeted the event from the Dorothy Stringer twitter account and filmed the before, during and after! We had lots of compliments from the organisers and from other teachers - they should all feel a huge sense of achievement. (You can see below the live twitter feed!)

Dolawen Trips The first Year 7 Dolawen trips started this term but unfortunately we have had to can all upcoming trips for the foreseeable future.

Once the school reopens we will look at whether it is possible to run the Year 7 Dolawen trips in the summer/autumn terms.

Mastermind Final On Friday 14 March 2020 we held the annual Dorothy Stringer Mastermind Final.

Thank you to everyone who came along and supported out finalists. The contestants had two minutes to answer questions on a specialist subject of their choice and two minutes to answer general knowledge questions.

We would like to say a huge congratulations to all the participants, especially to the winner of the Varro Cup, Moses Brzeski-Reilly.

The full results were as follows: 1st: Moses Brzeski-Reilly 11SVZ - 31 points Joint 2nd: Amelie Morris Blake 9LMB - 20 Points Joint 2nd: Misha Guerrier-Gregory 9CTL - 20 Points 4th place: Isla Campbell 8GRV - 17 points We would also like to thank Mr Watson for organising the General Knowledge Quiz and the Mastermind Final and Ms Uren and Mr Ryan who helped to run this year’s Mastermind.

Eco-Code Poster Winner Mr Sandercock held a competition for a new Eco Code poster this term.

Thank you to everyone who entered we had some great entries.

This year we had two winners, Betsy (the top photo) was the Student Choice Winner.

Orissa (bottom photo) was the Staff Choice Winner.

Well done to both of you, the posters are currently displayed around the school.

Pen Recycling The Eco Committee are delighted to be able to add another form of recycling at Stringer. Mr Sandercock has a reputation for eating Pringles and the Eco Committee have been collecting the pots trying to think what they could do with them. When we learned that pens and board markers could be recycled it was clear these pots would be the perfect collection pot. Two students designed the information sheet which outlines what can be recycled and then stuck it on the outside of the pots. These were then placed in classrooms. The collected pens will go to The Green Room to raise money towards their project.

Poem By Kitty - Year 11 Student PE in the rain, Revision driving me insane, DEAR weeks, Language techniques Inspector Calls, No running in the halls.

Waiting for it to snow... so home we could go.

But how much I’d miss it I did not know.

The canteen queues, and lack of glues, The writing on the wall, Year 7s making us feel small.

Swinging on chairs, and jumping down stairs.

The school trips, and Friday fish and chips How quick 5 years went by.

But I’m Stringer ‘til the day I die!

I want the sports days and endless essays you can keep your exams and grades I’ll take the memories I made I’d do it all again (minus the one way system) But I want everything thing else and plenty more without it my life would’ve been such a bore.

The best teachers ever, I can’t Thank you enough.
