We are so impressed with the resilience you’re showing to change and adapt and get your work done. As you will see, people are working in lots of different ways we just want you to do your best and keep in touch with your teachers. Remember, if you have any problems with the work you’re set, email your teacher and they’ll get back to you within a couple of days. We hope you enjoy this celebration in our first edition of the #Stringer Learning@Home Gallery. Each week, we will focus on different subjects:here’s some of the amazing assignments you’ve submitted in English, art and geography. Take care of each other and stay safe.

Below are Poems and Speeches written by students during lockdown.

If I ruled the world All wars must stop to fight coronavirus as pandemic speeds up across the globe The UN Secretary-General appealed for an ‘immediate global ceasefire’ to protect vulnerable people in war zones from the coronavirus pandemic. Antonio Guterres made the appeal earlier this week in a brief speech at UN headquarters in New York. He said: ‘The fury of the virus illustrates the folly of war. That is why today, I am calling for an immediate global ceasefire in all corners of the world.’ He also stated: ‘Our world faces a common enemy: COVID-19. The virus does not care about ethnicity, nationality, faction, or faith. It attacks all, relentlessly. Meanwhile, armed conflict rages on around the world.’ Experts expect the virus will have the largest impact in countries in conflict, which are often very poor and with large numbers of the population displaced, may be unable to withstand the onslaught of the pandemic if the situation continues to accelerate. Hospitals are not properly equipped for this and are unable to provide medical assistance to those who need it most. In many war-ravaged countries, such as Syria, health systems are collapsing, as first cases of coronavirus are recorded. Opposing countries are taking advantage of this unfortunate situation and targeting health professionals. This means that the most vulnerable – elderly people, children, refugees, and people with underlying health problems – are paying the highest price. This is an absolutely disgraceful act of inhumanity and if we let it continue, the effects could be disastrous. Countries like Syria that have been devastated by war for nearly a decade have a population at much higher risk of infection. In some of these countries they have poor sanitation that make hand-washing and other basic hygiene measures difficult. Social distancing in refugee camps is simply not viable. They expect that if the disease starts in these areas, it will spread massively, possibly causing the number of coronavirus deaths to exceed any expectations. The World Health Organisation (WHO) warned the coronavirus pandemic is clearly ‘accelerating’, but said it was still possible to ‘change the trajectory’ of the outbreak. The number of deaths has now passed 55,000, with more than 1,041,126 people infected worldwide. The number of cases is believed to only represent a fraction of the real number of infections, with many countries only testing the most severe cases in need of hospitalisation. If I ruled the world I would call for an ‘immediate global ceasefire in all corners of the world.’ I would also make sure that all countries that were struggling were provided with the necessary equipment to treat patients and provide assistance to the most vulnerable people. I believe this would be highly beneficial because it would save lives, help health systems improve, concentrate attention on containing the coronavirus, and limiting the spread of the disease.

Tonight at noon - coronavirus edition (after AH’s Car Crash Blues) Tonight at noon children all over England are playing outside in the sun, enjoying the company of their friends. Tonight at noon my Gran will be setting our places at the table, and waiting at the window to see us bounding up her garden path, ready for a hug. The supermarkets are stock-piled with products, the workers festooning the shelves with toilet roll and swimming in hand sanitizer. Tonight at noon my Dad will be whistling his way to work, and Mum will not be wearing the same worried look on her face, that she always did when he was made redundant. Families will sit down together, and talk about their days, over a big meal of pasta. Tonight at noon I’ll be sat in a classroom learning about Shakespeare, or photosynthesis, or algebra, not sat at home, trying to become my own teacher. I’ll be running for a bus, because I’m on my way to choir. I’ll be chatting with my friends - in person, not on a screen. People we love will not be dying at the hands of an invisible, indiscriminate monster. Tonight at noon the whole of England will be crowing around our TVs, listening to Boris tell us that we can live our lives again. Tonight at noon.

School in lockdown The corridors are silent now, Without the screams and shouts, Abandoned pencils rot away, Just left lying about, The blanket of dust thickens, As the world turns inside out. When will things go back, To the way they were before? Cleaning chemicals on every surface, The handle of every locked door, With everyone stuck at home, There is no laughter anymore.

Seagulls hover at lunchtime, Confused, lost and hungry, Where have all the children gone? There is not a single thing to see, The field is as dead as no mans land, Oh what a horrible catastrophe.
