Glad to Care Week

Brockington House hosted a wonderful Portrait Artist of the Year competition, a collaboration which brought together residents and aspiring young artists from local colleges. The event is believed to be the first of its kind held by a care home in the UK.

A dozen students from two local colleges – Hereford College of Arts and Hereford Sixth Form College – spent the day at Brockington to create portraits, with some of the ladies and gentlemen acting as models. The final results were simply stunning and judging the winners – a task undertaken by local artist Mark Stewart of Sunrise Giants, Home Director Shann Thomas, the home’s Activities Co-ordinator and organiser of the competition, Tara Chatterley-Russell and Dormy Care Communities Chief Executive Helen Davies-Parsonswas incredibly difficult.

After much deliberation the title of Portrait Artist of the Year, and a Hobbycraft voucher worth £150, was awarded to 17-year-old Darcy Eccleston from Hereford College of Art for his charcoal portrait of Yvonne.

Many of our ladies and gentlemen are gifted and experienced artists or enjoy creative activities themselves. Offering a range of opportunities for people to express their creativity or artistic skills with our Dormy Care Communities is incredibly important, and our activities programmes aim to always offer a variety of outlets for people to do so. This event was very much enjoyed and we hope it will become a regular event at Brockingon House.
