A VIEW FROM THE CHAIR

Today, for the first time at the Big Field (I believe), we extend a warm welcome to our guests, Oxford Harlequins. Following a draw against their local rivals Henley a couple of weeks ago and a high-scoring match against Westcombe Park last week, we’re anticipating another close and exciting contest. Although new to the league, Oxford have showcased plenty of attacking flair, racking up an impressive try count—our scoreboard operator might have their hands full today!

With September behind us, the league is starting to take shape, and this season sees more teams closely competing than we’ve seen in quite some time. Unfortunately, injuries are taking their toll on all squads, and we’ve been hit harder than usual. This week, flankers Will Burrows and Harry Elbow were confirmed to be out for 3-6 months. We wish them both a speedy and successful recovery.

Good luck to our 2nd and 3rd teams, who are playing at home today (surprise it’s Oktoberfest!!) in their respective matches. Even more importantly, we wish success to our Women’s team, who are away at Guernsey. It’s always a tough fixture with the added challenge of travel and player availability, but let’s hope they continue their streak of success.

As always, please enjoy the game, give a warm welcome to our guests, and respect the players and officials.

TACKLING YOUR MOVE WITH EASE A WORD FROM THE DOR

With more than 100 years’ experience, we are one of the country’s leading companies in household removals and storage. Whether you are moving locally, nationally, internationally or even need to store your treasured possessions, our local team of experts will ensure that you can sit back while we take care of everything.

Welcome to The Big Field, where today we are hosting three teams, showcasing that club rugby is truly alive at Dorking.

A special welcome to all the Oxford Harlequins players, coaches, and supporters. We hope you have a great day here at Dorking and that you are enjoying your well-earned National 2 journey.

We’re looking forward to locking horns with Oxford Quins today and have great respect for what they’ve achieved so far.

The Dorking team returns to The Big Field after a commanding performance against Henley last week. However, we’re also under no illusions that Henley had a poor day at the office, and we still have a few things to work on ourselves.

We hope you all enjoy the day with us as we celebrate our annual Oktoberfest.

TODAY’S OPPONENTS - OXFORD QUINS

We are excited to welcome Oxford Quins RFC to The Big Field today. Based in the historic city of Oxford, the Quins are currently in their first season competing in National League 2 East after a successful 2023/24 season that saw them promoted from Regional 1 Midlands. This marks a significant achievement as they are the first club from Oxford to reach the National Leagues.

Oxford Quins have experienced steady progress since their formation in 1996, following the merger of two local clubs, Oxford Marathons RFC and Oxford Old Boys RFC. Under the leadership of Stu Wells and Pete Davies, they have developed into a strong side, known for their exciting rugby and strong community ethos.

The club has a reputation for playing an expansive, dynamic style of rugby, combining power and speed to dominate in both attack and defense. Their promotion last season is a testament to the hard work of the players and coaching staff, and they’ll be keen to continue their momentum this year.

Alongside their men’s section, the club boasts a growing women’s programme, with their Women’s 1st XV competing in National Challenge 1 Midlands.

COCK FACTS - STEVE HOWORTH

A fan favourite “Big Steve” has been a constant presence in the second row (despite a few recent appearances at flanker) since joining the club. Starting his rugby journey in the Youth section at St Austell, Steve broke into their 1st XV before moving on to Launceston. A little-known fact about Steve is that he has also represented and captained the Philippines national team. This week, he takes on our Cock Facts questions.

When did you join DRFC?

In the 2015 season, my good friend George Evans introduced me to the club when I first moved to London.

Earliest DRFC memory?

Being stuck in a group with Roux, Wolfie, Catton and Oli Edwards for the dreaded four corners drill. If you know, you know.

Two spots would be filled by my fellow London to Dorking commuters Jasper and Finn for the chat and the tunes, the ever insightful Max Sheldrake would take the last spot.

Who would be the last person you’d take?

Currently Henry Smith as I can’t risk getting any more fines and further funding the end of season tour.

What was your best memory from last season?

Beating Barnes at their place is always a highlight.

What do you like most about coaching/playing at DRFC?

The club is so welcoming to everyone from the coaches and players to all the supporters, the support we get both home and away is unmatched

Rugby Inspiration?

Ian Newcastle.

If you had to drive from the Big Field to Lands End who from the club would you want in the car with you?

Chipstead or Old Reigations.

Earliest DRFC memory?

Dad taking me down to my first session and meeting Jasper (King), Joss (Hammond) and Rory (Mitchell).
