Today I’d like to extend a very warm welcome to our visitors, Canterbury RFC, to the Big Field.
As Armand has mentioned, our games with Canterbury over the past couple of years have been fiercely contested, with Canterbury just edging the head-to-head.
I expect today will be no different. Both sides have started the season strongly, with the only blemish for each being narrow defeats to Barnes. From what we’ve seen so far, I believe both clubs will be pushing for places in the top third of the table come the end of what looks to be the most competitive league we’ve encountered at this level.
I wasn’t able to make the trip to Canterbury for the last game, but I thoroughly enjoyed (until the final 10 minutes!) their excellent live TV coverage - surely the best in National League Rugby. I was also amused by the commentators’ fascination with “red trousers” and the Dorking supporters who wear them. To confirm the stereotype, I’ll be wearing mine today – and I’ll buy a drink for any fellow Dorking supporter who does the same!
Good luck to both teams and the officials, and here’s hoping for another gripping encounter in the great tradition of this fixture.
Regards, Shaun

SHAUN HAMMOND Chairman, Dorking Rugby Club

Welcome back to the Big Field!
A very warm welcome to Canterbury, our visitors today - we hope you all enjoy your time with us.
I’d also like to extend a big thank you to Dorree Bonner for sponsoring today’s match. Your support is greatly appreciated.
This promises to be a fantastic game for the neutral, with both sides playing attractive rugby and plenty of points likely on offer. From a Dorking perspective, I’m looking for us to build on our performance against Henley. We showed real composure for 50–60 minutes and I’d love to see us kick on as a squad today.
Off the pitch, it’s also our Annual Oktoberfest - so if you haven’t yet made plans for this evening, stick around and join the fun!
Enjoy the day, get behind the boys, and let’s make it another great occasion at the Big Field.
Your DoR, Armand #WACOMB

ARMAND ROUX Director of Rugby, Dorking Rugby Club

This afternoon we welcome Canterbury RFC to The Big Field for Round 5 of National 2 East.
Canterbury are one of Kent’s leading community clubs, with strong roots across the county and a thriving pathway that supports rugby at all levels. Their First XV have been building a strong squad over the past few seasons under Head Coach Matt Corker and captain Jamie Stephens, retaining a core group of players such as Stephens himself, powerful No.8 Tyler Oliver, scrum-half Tom Williams and wing Garry Jones while also adding impressive signings - most notably former Harlequins, Saracens and Agen centre Harry Sloan.
Last season, Canterbury were the only side to beat Dorking home and away, with both games going right to the wire, a 35–34 defeat at The Big Field and a 42–35 reverse in Kent. Those results underlined the fine margins between the clubs and set the stage for another highly anticipated clash this afternoon.
After four rounds of the new campaign, Canterbury sit 5th in the table, just one place behind Dorking - underlining once again how evenly matched the two sides are. With both clubs chasing early-season momentum, the ingredients are there for another fiercely competitive contest.
We warmly welcome Canterbury’s players, staff and supporters, and look forward to another enthralling afternoon of rugby at The Big Field.

This week we hear from 1st XV Vice-Captain Jasper King on the season so far, the team’s form heading into Round 5, and last weekend’s trip to Henley. We also catch up with Lauren Parsons from our Women’s 1st XV as she looks ahead to their second league game of the season — after their first ever at NC1 level — away at Medway two weeks ago.

Sponsored by The Rizzla
Four games in, we’re sitting 4th in the table with three wins and just one loss. How would you assess the season so far?
It’s been a good start overall, though I missed the first game. We’ve had some strong first halves, but our second-half performances have been a bit questionable at times. Plenty of positives, but still room to improve.
It’s Oktoberfest this Saturday, and we know you’ll be leading the charge as ever. Are there any dark horses or strong performers you’re expecting big things from on the social side?
This one’s a DRFC classic — people travel from far and wide for it. Apparently Joe Hole was once a South Wales karaoke finalist, so I’m expecting big things from him on the mic.
Canterbury did the double over us last season – 34-35 at the Big Field and 42-35 at theirs. What lessons have we taken from those games, and what are you expecting this Saturday?

It’s always a bitter pill to swallow when someone does the double over you. They’ve got a pack they really back, so for us it’s about fronting up and taking it to them.
Looking further ahead, is there a particular fixture in the calendar you’re most excited about – and why?
Barnes away is always one I look forward to. There’s a proper rivalry there, especially after losing to them a couple of weeks ago. Only downside is trying to dodge the goose muck on the pitch!
Finally, is there a “one to watch” this season — a teammate supporters should keep an eye on?
We’ve got a new young lad, Tom Bristow, who’s come over from St Tropez and decided to give rugby a go. Good bloke… average chat and even worse hands.

It was the perfect start in Round 1 of NC1 with a win away at Medway. How did it feel to play in the team’s first ever game at this level?
The nerves were definitely there at the start, especially with a few of the girls having played Medway before and knowing it would be tough. But the day couldn’t have gone any better.

We arrived early on the coach, had time to relax and prep properly, and when kick-off came we were dominant from the first whistle. We really clicked as a team and it felt bloody brilliant. It confirmed we can compete at this level and gave us real confidence to push for that top spot in the table!
We host Portsmouth Valkyries tomorrow – what are you expecting from them, and what are the key things you and the team will be focusing on in your performance?
They’re coming off the back of a loss, so we’ll be looking to take advantage of that. We’re expecting a physical contest, but for us it’s about tightening our defence, linking up better in attack, and making sure we play our own game.
In the last programme, Nim picked you and Lucia as ones to watch. Is there a player you think supporters should be keeping an eye on this season –someone who could make a big impact? We’ve had some really talented new players join this season, which is exciting for the squad.
I can’t pick just one! Steph, Ash, Ella, Rachel K and Suzie are all ones to watch. They bring strength, experience and have already raised the standard in both training and matches.
Looking ahead, are there any fixtures you’re especially excited for this season – and why? It has to be Jersey away in January, our first overnight trip!
Saturday games are rare in the women’s leagues, so the extra social time will be really valuable for team bonding.
I’m also looking forward to the joint away day to Canterbury with the men’s 1st XV, it’ll be a great chance to learn from each other… and a perfect excuse for a big social!

As the season settles in, we’re continuing our introductions to the fresh faces in the Dorking squad. Over the next few programmes we’ll highlight the new arrivals who joined us during the summer. Today, we turn to three more exciting additions: Tommy Lindsay, Caleb Falloon and George Head

Position & background:
I play in the backline, mainly at inside centre, but I’ve played pretty much all over and consider myself a bit of a utility back.
I’m fresh from schoolboy rugby in South Africa, so Dorking Rugby Club is my first club here in England.
Where did you start playing rugby, at what age and how/why?
I started playing contact rugby at primary school in South Africa at the
age of 9. My dad introduced me to a lot of different sports growing up, but once I was on the rugby field, I was hooked. Watching professional rugby with him on the weekends definitely added to the addiction.
What do you do for work outside of rugby?
I’m treating this year as more of a gap year while focusing on my rugby, doing some part-time work at the moment and looking for something more permanent soon.
Any rituals, superstitions, or go-to pre-game meal?
I’m not really superstitious or one for rituals.
The night before a game, I usually go for a bacon pasta, but besides that, I like to change it up each matchday.
What’s a hobby or hidden talent most people wouldn’t expect?
Growing up on the coast in Durban, I’ve always been a bit of a beach boy, though the waves here in England are definitely smaller and wetsuits thicker, I also enjoy a good game of chess when I’m off the pitch.
Favourite rugby player, sporting hero, or post-match drink or food of choice?
One of my favourite players growing up was Sonny Bill Williams. I’ve always admired his physical dominance and humility, both on and off the field.

Where do you play, previous clubs?
I play halfback. Back in New Zealand, I played for Takapuna and Silverdale, represented North Harbour and Blues age-grade sides, and came through Westlake Boys High School.
Where did you start playing rugby, at what age and how/why?
I first picked up rugby at Silverdale Rugby Club when I was nine.
Before that, I played football, but when the Rugby World Cup came to New Zealand in 2011 I fell in love with the game and haven’t looked back since.
Any rituals, superstitions, or go-to pre-game meal?
I like to keep things pretty relaxed on game day, nothing too serious.
Back in New Zealand, sushi was always my go-to pre-game feed.
What’s a hobby or hidden talent most people wouldn’t expect?
Hidden talent: I’m actually the fastest in the team - I just let the boys win in sprints to boost their confidence!
Outside of rugby, I’m a massive NBA and Lakers fan, so I spend a lot of time watching basketball and listening to podcasts.
Favourite rugby player, sporting hero, or post-match drink or food of choice?
My favourite rugby player is Richard Kahui - he was the one I loved watching when I first got into the game.
Post-match, it has to be an ice-cold Sprite every time.
Back the squad and boost your brand by sponsoring your chosen player this season.

What do you do for work outside of rugby?
Back home, my family runs a rural supplies business called Falloon Stockfoods, which my Popa started in 1963.

Theobald
Where do you play, previous clubs? I play hooker and I came from the Harlequins setup.
Where did you start playing rugby, at what age and how/why?
I started at Old Reigatians when I was about seven. My dad played rugby, so he was keen to get me into the game early on.
What do you do for work outside of rugby?
I work as a business analyst in financial services.
Any rituals, superstitions, or go-to pre-game meal?
I’m not big on rituals - no special routines or pre-game meals, I just keep it simple.
What’s a hobby or hidden talent most people wouldn’t expect?
I’m a very keen golfer - my handicap is 3.
Favourite rugby player, sporting hero, or post-match drink or food of choice?
My favourite rugby player is Jason Robinson - he was electric to watch.
My sporting hero is Shane Lowry (mainly because he’s my lookalike!). And post-match it’s got to be a Guinness.
