A VIEW FROM THE CHAIR

I would like to extend a very warm welcome to the players, supporters and officials of Barnes RFC on their visit to the Big Field today.

To say that we have had a close rivalry over the past 3/4 years would be an understatement! It would also be accurate to say that Dorking has had the rub of the green on more than one occasion over the last 3 years.

It is quite amazing that over the last 6 games between us all have been absolute cliffhangers with many being won with the last play of the game(fortunately 5 of them by Dorking!).

What both sets of players should be proud of is the quality of the Rugby and the level of entertainment that they have provided to us lucky spectators.

Let’s hope that today’s game continues with recent tradition and provides another enthralling game.

Regards, Shaun

A WORD FROM THE DOR

Welcome back to The Big Field!

Welcome to Jack and his Players from Barnes alongside supporters, management and coaches. I hope you have a great day here with us.

It’s been a tight affair over the past 3 seasons and a rivalry that has been a great one to be a part of. I’m sure today will live up to expectations.

Barnes had 4 seasons in 1 game last weekend against Henley as they narrowly escaped a last min try for Henley only to miss the conversion and both teams having to be happy with a draw.

We had a good day over at Guernsey and are desperate to replicate that form at home this weekend. Thanks to those supporters who could make the journey across the channel, massively appreciated.

I hope you all enjoy the game today and please get behind the lads and support them as they are all putting in the hard yards.

Your DoR, Armand

TODAY’S OPPONENTS

This afternoon we welcome Barnes RFC to The Big Field for our third match of the season.

Barnes are one of London’s oldest community clubs, running several senior sides and a thriving junior section. Their First XV have worked steadily through the leagues and are now firmly established at National 2 level, where they’ve built a reputation as organised, resilient and hard to beat side in the division.

It’s 2nd v 3rd from the past two seasons, and recent history suggests it doesn’t get much tighter between us. Dorking have taken five of the last six meetings, but with an average margin of just 3.8 points. Across those games the combined score reads Dorking 151-136 Barnes - underlining just how fine the margins have been.

Last season saw two more nail-biters, with Dorking edging both - 29–24 at The Big Field and 14-7 away. With that record in mind, another enthralling contest is expected this afternoon.

Barnes have started this season with a 26–14 win over Canterbury (scoring 4 tries to 2) and a 20-20 draw with Henley (2 tries apiece), showing once again how competitive they are at this level.

Dorking come into the game in good form after back-to-back wins over London Welsh (17-10) and Guernsey (39-22) Away last weekend, while Barnes will be eager to reverse last year’s results and build early-season momentum.

We warmly welcome Barnes’ players, staff and supporters, and look forward to another competitive afternoon at The Big Field.

LEAGUE POSITIONS

CAPTAINS’ PREVIEWS

This week we hear from 1st XV Vice-Captain Tom Hardwick on the season so far, the team’s form heading into Round 3, and last weekend’s trip to Guernsey. We also catch up with Women’s 1st XV Captain Naomi Brown as she looks ahead to their first league game of the season, and their first ever at NC1 level, away at Medway on Sunday.

TOM HARDWICK

Sponsored by Russell James Recruitment

Reflections on pre-season and the start of the season? It’s been a really good start. The coaches have put a huge amount of time into our preparation, and with Dan making sure the boys are in shape, we’ve hit the ground running.

Guernsey away is always a good trip. You picked up POTM - were there any stand-out performances?

Harry Barker and Sam Blade both impressed on debut, working hard for the full 80 minutes. And of course, our captain Scholesy led from the front and put in a real shift too.

Any stand-out performers off the pitch from the weekend?

Our new Welshie, Jo Hole, without doubt. Across the whole weekend he was a spectacle in his own right!

CAPTAINS’ PREVIEWS

Barnes up next - what are you expecting?

It’ll be a physical game as always, but the boys will be well up for it. It’s been very tight games between us recently so we’re expecting it to be another close one.

Is there a particular fixture you’re most looking forward to this year? Honestly, every game.

One to watch this season?

Rumour has it a young lad called Tom Bristow is making a comeback and has been making a really good impact recently. I’m looking forward to seeing what he can bring to the squad as the season develops.

NAOMI BROWN

Sponsored by Dan Brown Surrey Hills Carriage Rides

This Sunday is the team’s first-ever NC1 league game, away at Medway. How are you and the squad feeling heading into the game? We’re incredibly excited. It’s a huge milestone for us as a team and something we’ve all worked really hard for. The squad is ready to rise to the challenge, and we’re proud to represent the club at this level. We’ll be giving it everything out there.

CAPTAINS’ PREVIEWS

What do you see as the biggest differences or challenges moving up into NC1?

It’s a big step up from NC2, and we know the level of competition will be tougher but that’s exactly the kind of challenge we’ve been preparing for. Although NC2 had its challenges, this is a league where we can really shine.

How has pre-season gone, and what’s stood out most about the squad’s work over the summer?

Pre-season has been really positive - intense, but exactly what we needed. The numbers at training have been unreal, with everyone turning up, putting in the work, and pushing each other every week. A massive part of that has been thanks to Johnny’s fitness sessions, which have really raised the bar.

Which players have particularly impressed you during pre-season, either with their performances on the pitch or the work they’ve put in off it?

There’ve been a lot of standout efforts, but I’ve got to give a special mention to Liv (Dentus) and Erin (Taylour), who’ve both gone above and beyond - putting in extra shifts in the gym.

It’s also been great to see the backs putting in time before sessions to work on their kicking. Things like this will hopefully give us an edge this season.

Is there a player you think supporters should keep an eye on this season?

It’s hard to pick just one, because the whole squad has stepped up and we’ve welcomed some great new faces.

That said, Steph (Shackel) is definitely one to watch she’s new this year but has already made a big impact with her work rate and attitude. I also have to mention Lauren (Parsons) and Lucia (Schifano), who’ve had excellent pre-seasons and are looking unstoppable in the front row.

And anyone to keep an eye on off the pitch for their antics?

Let’s just say… what happens at the socials, stays at the socials! We’ve definitely got a few big characters who keep things fun off the pitch.

Are there any fixtures you’re especially looking forward to this season, and why?

I’m really excited for our Saturday home games. There’s always something special about playing in front of a home crowd. It’s a great chance for people to come down, get behind the team, and be part of what we’re building.

NEW FACES AT THE BIG FIELD

As the season settles in, we’re continuing our introductions to the fresh faces in the Dorking squad. Over the next few programmes we’ll highlight the new arrivals who joined us during the summer. Today, we turn to three more exciting additions: Harry Barker, Callum Butler, and Nick Barry.

HARRY BARKER

Available to Sponsor

Where do you play, previous clubs?

I play on the wing/outside back, though I actually started out as a prop before moving out wide as I got quicker. In the UK I’ve played for Bury St Edmunds, Sevenoaks, and now Dorking.

Back home in Brisbane I was with Ashgrove GPS from the age of 10, and I played three years in the Brisbane Grammar School First XV.

Where did you start playing rugby, at what age and how/why?

I started playing around 10 years old. At the time I was playing soccer but wasn’t much good at it, and running through people just looked a lot more fun on the TV!

What do you do for work outside of rugby?

I’m currently a commercial assistant to a quantity surveyor.

Before that I worked across a few different trades and also completed a degree in architecture.

Any rituals, superstitions, or go-to pre-game meal?

I’ve got a set of “tradie” undies I always wear on match day. I also spend time in the sheds looking at the jersey and visualising the kick-off, receiving the ball, and my first involvementjust to get my head in the right place.

What’s a hobby or hidden talent most people wouldn’t expect?

I’m big into golf, camping, and fishing. I can also play a bit of guitar, piano, and trombone.

Favourite rugby player, sporting hero, or post-match drink or food of choice?

Jonah Lomu has always been my favourite - I loved his aggression on the field.

I’m several inches and about 30kg lighter, but I still try to channel that same mindset when I play.

After a match, nothing beats a good steak with mushroom sauce and some eggs, washed down with a pint of Guinness.

NEW FACES AT THE BIG FIELD

CALLUM BUTLER

Available to Sponsor

Where do you play, previous clubs?

I play in the back row. My previous clubs include Caldy RFC, University of Liverpool RFC, and Horsham RFC where I came through the age grades.

Where do you play, previous clubs?

I first joined Horsham Rugby Club when I was about nine years old. A lot of my mates from school were playing and I wanted to get involved too.

Where did you start playing rugby, at what age and how/why?

Any rituals, superstitions, or go-to pre-game meal?

Always floss the night before a game! And my go-to pre-match meal is chicken pesto pasta the night before to fuel up properly.

What’s a hobby or hidden talent most people wouldn’t expect?

This summer I’ve picked up padel and golf. I can’t say I’ve improved a huge amount yet, but it’s been fun giving both a go.

Favourite rugby player, sporting hero, or post-match drink or food of choice?

My favourite player is Henry Pollock. And post-match it’s usually either a Guinness or a Jubel.

SPONSOR A PLAYER

Back the squad and boost your brand by sponsoring your chosen player this season.

With just one slot available per player, secure yours now before they’re gone!

I started playing as a kid at Camberley. My dad asked if I’d like to give it a go as my grandad played for Cornwall, and I loved it straight away.

What do you do for work outside of rugby?

I graduated from university this summer and I’m starting a graduate role in accounting at the end of September.

NEW FACES AT THE BIG FIELD

NICK BARRY

Available to Sponsor

Where do you play, previous clubs?

I play no.3 at tighthead prop.

Before Dorking I’ve had spells with Rams, Camberley, Chobham, and Farnborough.

Where did you start playing rugby, at what age and how/why?

I started at Farnborough when I was about five.

I’d been playing football but I was pretty rubbish at it, so rugby became the better option and I’ve loved it ever since.

What do you do for work outside of rugby?

I’m a plasterer outside of rugby, so most of my week is spent on site.

Any rituals, superstitions, or go-to pre-game meal?

Matchday is all about music for me - headphones in, tunes on, getting hyped up and in the right mindset.

What’s a hobby or hidden talent most people wouldn’t expect?

Away from rugby I enjoy close combat training. It’s something different and a good way to challenge myself.

Favourite rugby player, sporting hero, or post-match drink or food of choice?

My player of choice would be Joe Marler.

He’s funny, a real character, and being a prop as well I can relate to the way he plays.
