The View from the Chair

As the season is drawing to a close, it gives me great pleasure to welcome Tonbridge Juddians to the penultimate home game of the 2023/2024 season. If the away game is anything to go by, we are in for a stern physical challenge and if jungle draws are accurate (rarely), they have strengthened further since with the appointment of Jordan Turner-Hall. Hopefully, we have a couple of players returning from injury but either way, I know all the boys will give their all as ever.

The recent rugby highlight was not the 1st team, but rather the Colts National Cup semi final last weekend.TJ’s have, probably, the most impressive pedigree nationally in this competition and were one of our tougher games on this year’s run to the final.

Last Sunday, the Colts put on an outstanding display which was a great credit to themselves, their coaches, and the club in general. However, I must specifically credit and thank Armand Roux, our DoR, for having the vision and drive to help us establish and grow our youth player pathway via the YDP and CDP and also the club, but in the main the John Douglas Youth Development Fund for providing the resources for them to flourish.

Good luck to both teams and officials today and let’s hope for a good game played in the traditional spirit.

It’s been a couple of weeks since we have been at home and with 3 to go, it’s all to play for.

A special welcome to all our visiting supporters, management and players. I hope you enjoy a wonderful day here with us.

I know both teams will be looking for the W today as TJ’s have picked up some good form of late and we suffered a last minute defeat last time out over at Sevenoaks.

We have had a great couple of weeks getting ready for the last push and it was one amazing day at the club last Sunday as our Colts made it to the National Colts Cup Final after beating Rams at home.

Some of the colts have indeed featured for the Senior teams over the last 6 months and I’m pleased that the transition piece is working and that both parts of the club are thriving from that.

Back to today’s game, I hope you all enjoy a cracking day of rugby here with us and let’s respect the officials and players as they are all putting so much work in to make sure we all enjoy the game we love.

Earliest DRFC memory?

My son joining the Under 7s in September 1995. Coaching them 2 weeks later and having to go on Training Courses! I took 2 girls and 5 boys to the inaugural Tunbridge Wells Festival and they won. 12 years of them cracking my ribs and touring. Challenging but wonderful!

Rugby Inspiration?

Tony Neary. The best ever Open Side: Broughton Park, Lancs, England, B Bs, Lions. Beat the All Blacks with Northwest Counties in 1972 (Workington) and with the Northern Division in 1979 (Otley) AND I WAS THERE.

If you had to drive from the Big Field to Lands End who from the club would you want in the car with you? Roger Perry. A never-ending fund of stories from his sporting times and still sailing.

Who would be the last person you’d take?!

I really do not want to listen to anyone’s political views.

What was your best memory from last season?

Beating Barnes Away by 1 and at us by 4. Lovely!

Which Dorking player is your favourite and why?

Definitely not me…

Who is the player that spends the most time in the gym?

Too much love for them all to pick one: but I commend Daragh for his development at 2nd Row in recent games!

What do you like most about being a part of DRFC?

The tight camaraderie amongst players and spectators. On a Derelicts Tour or late on a Sat after a lively lunch there is someone looking out for you and ensuring you get home!

Having a home advantage is huge, having a Wingnut advantage is even more significant. Opposition kickers and hookers go home with their ears ringing from his unmissable, cry for help, mating call, nobody really knows. A legendary clubman that all the players fully appreciate the dedicated support shown week in week out by not just Wingnut but all the supporters. Thank you.

Earliest DRFC memory?

My outstanding early memory is playing with Malcom Gates and John Arvold in a Surrey cup game. against high flying streatham and croydon.We won 9 - 3, I scored the only try from a set penalty move and then we tackled everything that moved for the remainder of the game. Such a memorable win.Thursday night training was a blood bath, 9 guys competing for 3 places in the first 1XV.

Rugby Inspiration?

For me it would Neil Back, small in stature but immense around the pitch for club and country.

If you had to drive from the Big Field to Lands End, who from the club would you want in the car with you?

Hmmm probably merve Overton as driver and Stuart Bailey and spearo (Simon spear) the fountains of all knowledge, music, politics and sports.

Who would be the last person you’d take?!

SORRY Dymo but you would get us lost, like the tour of the Cambridge universities en route to Bury St Edmunds

What was your best memory from last season?

For me it has to be back to back wins against Barnes, always such close games. Jonny Ellis running across the pitch and telling Me and Bob to “shut the f--- up I can’t hear the calls”, causing so much amusement to the balcony.

Which Dorking player is your favourite and why?

I have played with so many great players over the years, sorry to the glory boys in the back but its my mates in the back row. Malcom Gates is the best player I have played with. Immense around the pitch, physically strong and such a good rugby brain. Recently there is only one person, Fin is so immense from the base of the scrum, in the loose, the line out. Most of our opposition wish they could have Fin playing for them.

What do you like most about being a part of DRFC?

To see the growth of a club that I joined nearly 40 plus years ago playing for and supporting. I can honestly say this is part of my family and the life time friends I have made I will always cherish. I will support this club till my dying breath.
