The View from the Chair Shaun Hammond

Today at the Big Field we extend a warm welcome to Canterbury Rugby Club, if past history is anything to go by, we will encounter an exciting and skilful opposition who compete throughout the 80 minutes. Having experienced a couple of set backs recently I am sure Armand and the team will be looking to bounce back at home and fingers crossed that some of our walking wounded are back in the squad. I would like to also take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers who make the club what it is today, we have hundreds, in junior age group, referees, membership, pitch set up, parking, coaching, and club administration that it is impossible to name and thank everyone, but we have a small representation at today’s lunch and I thank them on behalf of all of us at the club. As well as today’s important match, tomorrow we have the National Quarter Finals of the Colts’ Cup away at Rosslyn Park K.O. 1pm. If at all possible, please try and get there and support.The next generation are a delightful team to watch and have a really supportive bond within the wider squad. I hope to see you on the touchline to lend your support (Wingnut have you got a lift ?!!!!). I hope you enjoy todays game and I am sure we all appreciate the time, effort, dedication and commitment that both sets of players, coaches and officials put in to enable the high quality game that will unfold, please support and respect them all.

Welcome back! It feels like an eternity since we have been back at the Big Field for some National 2 East League action. And we are back with a bang! A special welcome to all three senior teams visiting us today (Bromley, Ampthill and Canterbury). I’m sure you will all enjoy rugby on show today and please make sure you visit the bar and stay for the 6 Nations action after. I’m personally looking forward to today’s games as I know everyone has put in loads of work behind the scenes so should be a cracking game. I would also like to take some time to say a big thank you to the Dorking faithful supporters who are following the team everywhere and always up for a beer and a chat post game. Lastly, thank you to the officials today. There is a lot of focus on match officials recently and without you we wouldn’t have games today, so thank you. PLAYER PROFILES The heartbeat of Dorking Rugby, Daniel has made the club his home, bringing great passion and knowledge to all-corners of the club. He can be found secretly snacking to fuel his five daily gym sessions.

Earliest DRFC memory? It must be October 2019 when the 1st XV beat Sevenoaks at home 26-23. Such a mentally and physically tough game. Rugby Inspiration? You’re giving my age away, haha... Players like the enforcer, “Bakkies”, James Small, Gary Teichmann. All players that epitomised what it meant to play with flair and passion. If you had to drive from the Big Field to Lands End who from the club would you want in the car with you? Oh tough, so many to choose from, but DJ FINN on the music, Bealo for the history, Max for banter, Armand for the “gees”. Who would be the last person you’d take?! Charlie, because he will spend the whole journey doing his best to try and wind you up and Henry Page mainly because he talks kak.

What was your best memory from last season? The best had to be doing the double over Barnes as well of the added bonus of Fred being upset because Finn was the face of the National League Rugby post-match interview and not the captain! Who posts the weirdest things on the coaches groups? It is tight between Scholes and Birch.They do love posting stuff haha. What do you like most about coaching Rugby at DRFC? The culture throughout the club, from minis on a Sunday to the first team. If you were to look behind the scenes and see how every coach and medical team all try to help it is clear this is a very special club, not only on the field but off the field. It is clear, the vision and goal of where we all want DORKING to be is truly aligned.

Armand Roux Big things happen when big things come from South Africa. Armand’s impact on Dorking Rugby has been so influential for so many years now, it’s a testament to how much he’s given to the club that was only meant to be a short stay! His legendary legacy on and off the pitch is something very special. Earliest DRFC memory? Arriving at Heathrow and being greeted by Leo Kane and Michael Kornrumpf on a Sunday morning at 7am, fresh from Saturday night antics, ready to drive me to Dorking Rugby Inspiration? They do change depending on what the focus is but Rassie Erasmus is a long time favourite for me. Even back when he was a player he was pretty unique in his approach. Would also add my two kids.They do inspire me to ensure I show a good example of how to stay humble in victory and show good work ethic with disappointments. #nextjob.

If you had to drive from the Big Field to Lands End, who from the club would you want in the car with you? Front seat and master of pit stop schedules alongside hydration requirements is David Jaques. Next, I will take Daniel Mackenzie who is in the car just to keep us on time and to advise me how to dodge a few drinks. I would then make sure I have Daragh Chambers in the car, just in case we get into trouble, and lastly would be young Callum Powell just to ensure the music is more relevant and we can talk about Tik Tok and Bumble a bit more. Who would be the last person you’d take?! Andrew “Bushy” Bush. He has seen some dark places in his time as a physio at the club and he will just be telling everyone about the time he had to strap me up ;0) What was your best memory from last season? Seeing James Catton finishing his Dorking playing days and the double over Barnes are both up there, but it is 100% coaching the best team the club has ever seen in its 101 years. Very special group of players, medical and management. Who posts the weirdest things on the coaches groups? They will probably say it’s me with my brain dumps but it’s a competition between Jack Bairstow and Henry Birch. I think Jack edges it as he tends to find some amazingly funny clips. What do you like most about coaching Rugby at DRFC? Incremental improvements. Seeing a youth player transition into adult rugby. Seeing a uni player come back to play with club friends. Seeing the willingness to learn and then the satisfaction of achieving or understanding. Seeing family and friends supporting players.Those individual moments alongside the environment we are creating is very rewarding.
