The View from the Chair Shaun Hammond

Happy New Year to everyone. It gives me enormous pleasure to be welcoming Staines Women’s team and our own Dorking Women’s team to today’s league match at the Big Field. Although this might be the first time the women’s team are the prime game, with such magnificent support from across the club, it certainly will not be the last. As a club, although we had a very good start over 25 years ago with women’s rugby, if we are honest with ourselves, we fell behind and did not focus enough on supporting it. However, over the last number of years, we have made significant progress and the performances of our senior women’s team this year has been outstanding in both results and the quality of rugby played. It is also very heartening to see the women’s team have such fun and positive, supportive team-spirit with each other. This has occurred through the hard work of so many people over such a long time and is supported by our sponsors, especially Craig and Mole Valley Asset Management. However, the senior management team, led by Pip, deserve huge plaudits for getting us to this point. Good luck to both teams today and as always, please enjoy the game and support the officials.

Best regards, Shaun Hammond Chairman, Dorking Rugby Club

DORKING RUGBY CLUB

DARTFORD - UK

A Word from the DoR... Armand Roux

A special welcome for a very special day, today. I’m personally delighted that we have the spotlight firmly on women’s rugby today. With the sell out lunch it proves that there is a real appetite to support women in sport and I, for one, am right behind that vision. Welcome to all the players, coaches, management and supporters today. We have worked hard as a club over the last couple of decades to target the values and culture implemented throughout the club, and today I feel is a real testament of that. I would like to really congratulate the Dorking Women’s coaching team and players for the amazing social network they have established and the fact that we are really playing some good rugby is another feather in the management team’s collective cap. I hope you all have a wonderful day here with Dorking RFC and to Craig from MVAM after the years of supporting Women’s rugby and helping us drive the vision, thank you.

All the best, Armand Roux Director of Rugby, Dorking Rugby Club #WACOMB

PLAYER PROFILES Jemma is one of our standout players in the backs with the fastest, and longest, legs in the league. It is hard to believe that Jem joined the team with no previous rugby experience and is currently the top try scorer in NC3 South East. Jem is a grafter and a legend on and off the pitch and we are so lucky to have her!

Jemma Wood

Earliest rugby memory? Watching wasps v quins when I was about 11 at Twickenham I had no idea what was happening the entire game as I’d never played rugby but knew the atmosphere gave me so much energy and loved every second of the day out with my dad. Rugby inspiration? As I only started playing just over a year ago, that’s when I really started following rugby. All my inspirations are people I’ve seen smash the World Cups over the last two years. Ellie Kildunne for the women as she has absolute pace and Ben Earl as he has worked hard to get into the squad and is insane to watch. If you had to drive from the Big Field to Lands End who from the club would you want in the car with you? Hannah McAlpine as she can talk for England and always has good chat and games for any occasion. Who would be the last person you’d take?! Also Hannah McAlpine as she talks for England and I’m not sure I could drive with her dogs on my lap.

What was your best memory from last season? Has to be scoring my first ever try!! But I love every second with this team and we make every game a win in some way Who takes up most of the physios time? Lynnie bless her cotton socks. What do you like most about playing rugby at DRFC? We are one big family here and every one of my teammates wants to do the best for each other in any way, and that’s what I love the most.

Dara is our pocket rocket back who is always in the action at 9 or 10. She brings so much infectious energy to training and games and is fearless when it comes to tackling the oppo, especially the ones double her size. Despite being a lightweight on the beers, Dara is dependable and a credit to the team and we love her very much.

Earliest rugby memory? Playing tag rugby in school. I remember the coach needing to tie my boot laces at the start as I always wore Velcro school shoes! I learnt my core rugby skills and just as important how to tie my laces (eventually). Rugby inspiration? So many to choose from but probably Joe Marler, for both his work on the pitch but also for mental health off the pitch. He just makes me crack up really.

Dara Wilson

If you had to drive from the Big Field to Lands End, who from the club would you want in the car with you? Someone who can navigate, as I would most likely drive to Calais otherwise. I’ll go with Laveeza. Who would be the last person you’d take?! This is tough. Someone else who would likely get lost… What was your best memory from last season? Our first rugby tour in Wales, in particular playing against Porthcawl. Such a welcoming group and really made a name for myself at tighthead prop. Who takes up most of the physios time? Hmm. I think collectively we all do. Probably Lauren Parsons as she is one of them. What do you like most about playing rugby at DRFC? The support from all the players. We are an inclusive club and all support each other to do the best that we can, for ourselves and each other.
