The View from the Chair Shaun Hammond

A warm welcome, (well warmer than last week!) to The Big Field for the much anticipated visit of Esher RFU. Both teams arrive at the half way point of the season occupying the top two positions and due to other cancelled games last week that will remain the fact after today, the only question is, in which order? I am sure Esher are similar to us in having collected key injuries by this stage of the season, we are disappointed to have lost Captain Fred Dalton for the foreseeable future and wish him a speedy and safe recovery. As ever, one man’s misfortune is another’s opportunity and we are please to welcome Brian and Tom into the squad for their likely first home appearance. Also, I’d like to thank the many sponsors in attendance today, especially Downs Law as one of our Lead Sponsors. Downs is one of the South East’s leading law firms and have been long-term and committed sponsors of the whole club and its collective community. I can highly recommend their work and professionalism and we are hugely grateful for theirs, and all our sponsors support. I am sure today’s game will be exciting and of high quality which we can all enjoy and please support the players and officials with enthusiasm and respect in their tasks today.

Best regards, Shaun Hammond Chairman, Dorking Rugby Club

DARTFORD - UK

A Word from the DoR... Armand Roux

Welcome back to The Big Field today. A special welcome to Esher players, coaches, management, and supporters who have made the short journey to what is, probably, one of the more local games they will have this year. Esher have been hitting some form of late and I’m sure they will be looking to continue that form into today. Our 1st team have also been playing well and have shown some fantastic resilience of late and the results so far this season show that, which is testament to the hard work and dedication that has gone into it. Our 2’s and 3’s will also be in action and I can also say that I don’t remember a time where our 2’s have been training so well and really pressuring the 1’s week in and out, so I am really grateful for the positive attitudes and club camaraderie we have at Dorking. I will also take this opportunity to say well done to our Women who are sitting Top of EC3 and our Colts who are in the Last 16 of the National Colts Cup. Amazing achievements by all. Back to today, I hope you all really enjoy a good day of proper club rugby with us and remember to respectfully support your players and the officials. What a few games we have got on today. Enjoy

All the best, Armand Roux Director of Rugby, Dorking Rugby Club #WACOMB

We are Downs * Terms and conditions apply. Places are limited and subject to availability. We reserve the right to withdraw this offer without prior notice.

Downs Solicitors LLP is a name which is very well known at the Club. The award-winning local firm, which has offices around Surrey, has been a principal sponsor of the Club for a number of years. Equally well known is Chris Millar, Downs’s Senior Partner, who regularly attends the Club to cheer on DRFC, and in his role as a Director of the Brockham Big Field Sports Association. Chris often gets asked: “What could a rugby club and a law firm possibly have in common?” “Perhaps a lot more than people realise. ■ The strong historical ties

with the local community. Downs was founded in 1836 and the Club began in 1921.

■ The ability to perform under

pressure is crucial in sport. The same is true in business. Teams, who can trust each other to deliver under pressure are the ones that win the pitch, negotiate the best deal or delight the customer.

■ Our success is built on a

foundation of hard work. The players spend hours building up their fitness levels and practising the same set pieces and whilst you don’t need to have great fitness levels to be successful in business, it requires the same hard work and commitment.

■ Don’t underestimate your

opponent, but don’t fear them either.

If the competition is more experienced, bigger or successful, respect that but stick to your own game knowing you have your own talents to offer. ■ Have sustainable drive.

Success in business or rugby doesn’t come overnight and is about your ability to adapt and improve. It is not a short term endeavour. You need to have the drive to keep going through the good and the bad times. ■ Triumph over adversity.

We know that 180 years to survive in business is a long time, particularly when it was established during the Victorian era, when war was rife and the economy was unstable. ■ Playing rugby is hard.

I know from my playing days how much it can hurt sometimes, especially when

you lose. Running a business may be different, but it still hurts when things go wrong. However, the feeling you get when you win is just as exhilarating as you the feeling you get on the pitch.” Like DRFC, we take pride in our community roots so continuing our involvement in the Club is a natural one. We welcome Esher to the Big Field today. Downs Solicitors LLP wish the club every success for this season, and we look forward to meeting many of you at the matches! Chris Millar Senior Partner

PLAYER PROFILES Toby is an enigma. His finishing ability and powerful carries over the last three seasons have been quite honestly, frightening. What is also frightening is how little Toby seems to know what is going on half the time! Who else shrugs off a 20 minute hat-trick as if nothing else has happened and thinks we’ve lost games we’ve won by 15 points?

Toby McRae

Earliest Rugby memory? The 2007 World Cup Final England vs South Africa. I’m still convinced Cueto scored that try. Rugby Inspiration? Benji Marshall from his Wests Tigers days in the NRL. If you had to drive from the Big Field to Lands End who from the club would you want in the car with you? Tom Nairn for his away day experience with the Seagulls,Tom Howe for the car journey supplements and Bristow to hear about his time at the AJ Bell with Sale Sharks, and how rich he is. Who would be the last person you’d take?! Charlie Connor would bring some pretty weird car snacks.

What is your game day routine? Every week is different but It usually starts with a full English, then I’ll drive down to the club and have a pasta box in the changing room before the warm up. Post match is an Asahi and game review with Bealo.

What was your best memory from last season? Has to be Rochford away.We were missing half the starting team to a stag do and pulled off a great result in tough conditions.

What do you like most about playing Rugby at DRFC? Being alongside lads who I’ve played with since we were minis and the incredible support we get home and away.

Lynn Tickner Lynn is an absolute staple in the women’s team and is our resident number 8. After many years at Old Cats she has made the transition to Dorking colours seamlessly and brings us plenty of experience, commitment, and power. Every team needs a Lynnie! Earliest Rugby memory? Going to watch the men’s England v Canada game, we were just below one of the corporate boxes. The guy who owned it was Canadian. He was so impressed with my banter, shouting & knowing the rules (women’s rugby was not really on the map then). He gave me free tickets for every other Twickenham game that season. Rugby Inspiration? I admired Jonny Wilkinson & Jason Robinson. I had always loved watching the game but never had the opportunity to play it until I was 30! I loathed meeting people/men (lol) in clubs & bars, so decided to join Old Caterhamians Women’s Rugby - kill two birds with one stone so to speak lol. If you had to drive from the Big Field to Lands End, who from the club would you want in the car with you? Drive that far….. oh gosh!! Can I pick a few people, as I know they’d all fall asleep at some point?! Lucie Warren, Hannah McAlpine & Leah Garel.

Who would be the last person you’d take?! Last person would be - ummm - Amber Pressler because she’d be drunk the whole way (lol). What was your best memory from last season? Can’t pick one, every game & social event was awesome. Who takes up most of the physios time? I think Tash Merrett takes up most of the Physio’s time but I’m probably not far behind. What do you like most about playing Rugby at DRFC? What I like most is the dedication & passion from every single one of my team mates on & off the pitch.
