The View from the Chair Shaun Hammond

Today, it is a delight to welcome old friends, and close rivals, Sevenoaks RFC to the hopefully sunny Big Field. Over the last few years, the games between the two clubs have been very close and always exciting. The Oaks arrive in very good form with three wins one draw, and a very narrow loss to Esher, in their last five games and are moving up the table steadily after a slow start. For Dorking, after our exceptional start to the season the combination of key injuries, heavy ground conditions and the opposition starting to counter our game plan has made progress difficult the last couple of games. What has impressed me most is the resolve of the players to commit to the cause until the very last minute, which has yielded opportunities to win the last two games with the final play. I am sure today’s game will be exciting but please boys, don’t leave it too late! Congratulations are due to our Colts team and their wonderful coaching team for last Sunday’s win against defending champions Tonbridge Juddians in the National U18 cup (having also accounted for a strong Sevenoaks side in an last round). We are the last Surrey side left in the competition and through to the last 16 in England. I believe that we should have a Home fixture in the next round vs Winchester on 14th January. When confirmed, can you please all put it in the diary and offer as much support as possible to the Colts. It is great to have another sell-out lunch today and to see so many of our coaches of the junior teams in attendance today, thank you for all your time and hard work in developing the next generation of Dorking Cocks. I hope you all enjoy a good game and support players and officials equally and respectfully.

Best regards, Shaun Hammond Chairman, Dorking Rugby Club

DORKING RUGBY CLUB

DARTFORD - UK

A Word from the DoR... Armand Roux

Welcome back to The Big Field this week where we are hosting both Sevenoaks and Bishop’s Stortford. A special welcome to all the visiting management, players, coaches and supporters. I hope you all have a great day here with us as we respectfully enjoy the sport we all love. I know that we also have our Youth Coaches day at lunch today and I’m interested to see them all later on around 5pm ;-). Last year we had a few rugby club sleepovers. Watch this space. Back to rugby, I’m looking forward to a great contest between Sevenaoks and Dorking today. The league table can be somewhat misleading as ‘Oaks have definitely been doing well lately so we will need to be on it today. Another special welcome to the under 8s’ and under 12s’ parents here today, as they get some curtain-raiser games and half-time games in. It’s amazing to have you all involved. I hope you all get behind the players today and, most of all, that you enjoy the day of rugby at Dorking.

All the best, Armand Roux Director of Rugby, Dorking Rugby Club #WACOMB

PLAYER PROFILES Henry ‘The Fines Master’ Smith, is a true Dorking legend. Getting his hands on the fines master job is a match made of pure love. A cracking all round scrum half, who bleeds DRFC. Earliest DRFC memory? Playing for the minis at about 6 years old, and hating the mud, could not stand it.And then when my short attention span had been exhausted, leaving mid-session to go and climb trees, which my coaches were all too happy to let me do, and be rid of me! Rugby Inspiration? From the professional side, it’s got to be Dan Cole or Danny Care. Coley for his longevity and proof that nouse and longevity has a place in the modern game, and Danny Care for his exciting up-tempo style of play. From the Dorking side, it would be Matt Noble, for taking me under his wing in the early days of my senior and 1s games (the cheery ying to my grumpy yang), and the great DRFC servant (and my personal taxi driver) Scotty Richardson. If you had to drive from the Big Field to John O’Groats who from the club would you want in the car with you? There are too many to name, so many we could fill a bus, and what a bus it would be, and the scenery to John O’Groats would be ideal for a skydive or two (for the adrenaline junkies). But if we had to limit it to a car, I’d have to go with Fraser “DJ FraMo” Mosley, up front on the aux. Driving us would be captain, leader, legend Fred Dalton with his moral compass keeping us on the right path

(until we reach our destination, and a couple beers later, when Fed Dowson joins the party to liven us all up). In the back providing stories and jokes would be Max Sheldrake, and rounding the car off with trivia and a certain dry sense of humour would be Will “Colonel” Sanders. Who would be the last person you’d take?! Would have to be, gone but not forgotten, Tom Budd. His constant chat about bonfires and how “everything’s better in Brockham” would be unbearable. Favourite Dorking/rugby memory?? Winning the U17s national comp would defo be up there. But, to be incredibly cheesey, it’s got to be turning up every Tuesday,Thursday and Saturday with a good bunch of brothers, playing code and chasing Mahe. Who in your time as finesmaster has come up with the best excuse as to not paying?? Big Steve takes a runners up spot with “it takes 5 business days to transfer from the Cayman Islands”. But the very best has got to be Finn Osborne’s recent flat refusal to pay, saying “I show up every week and put my body on the line for this club, I’m not falling into your trap and paying your bullsh*t miscellaneous fines”. What do you like most about playing Rugby at DRFC? The atmosphere, we have the best group of players, coaches, physios, staff, and supporters, it’s great to see the bar buzzing late into the night after a home game.Win, lose or draw the big field never disappoints!

Henry Smit

ers Will Saund

Will ‘The Colonel’ Sanders has settled into his first season both on and off the pitch. Finding his slightly weird personality fitting in nicely with some of the clubs other oddities! An elusive runner with the ball and technically gifted player, a really great find for DRFC. Best rugby memory? Would have to be my final year at Loughborough winning the BUCS super rugby league. We had a great group of boys who had been at the club for close to 3 years and to achieve that as I was leaving was something special. Rugby Inspiration? After many a discussion with Bristow and Smith it would have to be Dan Cole… the bloke’s quite frankly a machine and should go down as Englands greatest prop forward. For my general position as winger it would have to be Jonny May. Arguably the best kick chase since Ben Cohen. If you had to drive from the Big Field to John O’Groats who from the club would you want in the car with you?” Fantastic question: Craig Holland - ‘The Nause’ exceptional rugby knowledge could get nausey about champ rugby. Henry Smith - ‘The Chase’ great quiz knowledge, loves the brothers and susceptible to a good joke.Tom Howe - ‘The Chief’ would be great to get nausey about Worcester and Saracens. Steve Howorth - Would keep the car in check. Probably answer all Smithy’s quiz questions and is succeptible to a bit of code chat.

Who would be the last person you’d take?! Probably Cam Cowell, he literally doesn’t stop talking about Doncaster… the first thing he did was send me a link to a you tube video titled ‘Cam Cowell is enjoying his first pre season at Doncaster’ (11 July 2019).We would end up driving back to castle park. Any funny stories happened whilst playing for DRFC? Good Question - last Friday before the game I was sat watching HUDL pre-game and thought,“let’s trick Henry Smith”. So I called Smithy and said I’d met someone on the tube who knew him from Dorking (at this point I thought he’d clock on) however I proceeded to tell him that I’d met the guy from Dorking minis called Will (a good mate of his). He asked what’s his surname to which I replied Barrow. For the next 2 minutes I had Smithy down the phone saying Will Barrow, hmmm Will Barrow, after a couple of renditions he replied, with a word that’s probably not acceptable for this programme. Anyways 1-0 Smithy boy. What do you like most about playing Rugby at DRFC? It is a great club with a load of great players and a great coaching set up! I have really enjoyed my time so far at this club and hope we can achieve our goals for this season.
