The View from the Chair Shaun Hammond

Welcome back to The Big Field. It seems a long time since our last home game, but what a game in prospect.Today, we have the pleasure of entertaining Bury St Edmunds RFC at The Big Field. Our guests have run into good form over the last month or so and represent a significant challenge to Armand and the team.The home team have made an encouraging start to the season and played some very attractive rugby, but the next five weeks will be very tough and we can only start to draw any tentative conclusions once everyone has played everyone else once.

It is great to have long term member and past player, Elliot Awin as our Guest Speaker today. Elliot is embarking upon a huge Charitable Challenge in endeavouring to row the Atlantic (must have taken a few shots to the head as a player!) I will leave it to Elliot to tell you why he is undertaking this!

Finally, it is wonderful to have so many of the Club Sponsors at today’s lunch.

It feels like it’s been a long time since we have been back at home with the RWC finals and our first game after the break being a fantastic win away from home against OA’s.

I’d like to extend a special welcome to BSE players, management and supporters.

I hope you enjoy your day here with us.

BSE has had a good start to their campaign and they are a team I have a lot of respect for. I’m sure we will be in for one amazing game today.

So far this season our 1’s have been doing well but we know we have a target on our back now, regardless of who we are playing. BSE will be no different.

They managed to do the double over us last year, albeit in some cruel circumstances, but very well deserved by them for showing their resilience.

I hope you all have a great day here with us today while we all make sure we get behind the players.

PLAYER PROFILES Jasper

Jasper has been a towering presence in the 1st XV since 2016.

Storming runs and a knack for flair rugby, this friendly giant is a great clubman. However, refusal to wear tape or a scrum hat, has left this poor bugger’s ears in horrific condition, he is also still fuming that he’ll never get to play 8 again!

If you had to drive from the Big Field to Land’s End who from the club would you want in the car with you?

Finn behind the wheel; master of his craft. Big Steve in the back, as it’s his preferred position and Fred and Henry (Anscombe) for general loose chit-chat.

Who would be the last person you’d take?!

Henry Smith - He’s taken far too much money off me!

What was your best memory from last season?

Beating OA’s away. My first game back after knee surgery, and a tough close win on the road. Lovely.

Who really is the reason your London crew are always late?

Steve Howorth. Every. Single.Time.l

What do you like most about playing Rugby at DRFC? Playing with your best mates every week.Also following in my dad’s footsteps means a lot.

Tom Chave “Tom ‘Sergeant Major’ Chave is a highly committed member of the DRFC playing and social community. Willing to give up his time to come back to the club on a Sunday to collect his lost possessions from the social, or to be around the club he has made many memories at; a workhorse on and, he’d like to think, off the pitch too!

Earliest DRFC memory?

Cold Sunday mornings at the Big Field with Dobbo and Catton, then joining our Dads in the bar, unable to find them through the cigarette haze.

Rugby Inspiration?

This is a two-fold answer: First one being Richard Hill, always my favourite player and back rower growing up. Second is my grandfather, Francis Bennett.A life-long member of DRFC, he still tells me regularly that the game’s gone soft. I could score three tries in a game, miss zero tackles but he’ll still find something to negatively comment on, but I wouldn’t change his feedback.

If you had to drive from the Big Field to Lands End who from the club would you want in the car with you?

Club Captain, Jonny Ellis would be the first travel companion, someone as passionate about Middle Earth as myself is all I need for company. Second is Ted Carey, so we can sample all the ales on the way up (muddy water to some of the more uncouth individuals like Scott Richardson).Third is George Spreckley, because we come as a pair in most social situations.

Who would be the last person you’d take?

Anyone under the age of 25, they don’t know they are bloody born.

What is your best Dorking memory as a senior player?

My first 1XV appearance against Wimbledon at home in 2018.

Who brings more to the club you or Ellie?

I’ll have to give this one to my fiancé, she keeps the boys in good health. No rub downs!!

What do you like most about playing Rugby at DRFC? Everything, a member since 5 years old, I never want to play for another club, no matter where I’ve been based in the country with work, I’ll always make the journey back to HQ Big Field.
