I would like to extend a warm welcome to our guests at the Big Field today, Westcombe Park RFC. It is nice to have a home game after three of our first four games have been away. However, as you will be aware that has not deterred Armand and the team from starting the season both successfully, and playing with some style. Newly promoted Westcombe Park have had close results against all teams played and it was good to see their first league win against our old “friends” Worthing last week.
As impressive as the 1st team were last week, to me it was not the best, or even second best performance from a Dorking team over the weekend. I enjoyed watching our women’s team perform very skilfully and with great commitment in a heavy league win on Sunday. However, the performance of the week had preceded that game with our Colts playing their first National League game finishing with an even heavier win than the aforementioned ladies. They performed with pace, endeavour, commitment and no little skill - a joy to watch. Getting to this point has taken some time: setting up the Youth Development programme, and latterly the Colt Development programme, and being financially supported by the John Douglas Fund. However, much credit is due to Armand for overall strategic direction and implementation by dedicated coaches (many of whom do not have boys in the Colts set up).
Thank you to Dom Brockes, Dom Smales, Gareth King, Jeremy Henshaw, Mike Maddick and David Power. I am sure the boys appreciate all your efforts and the Club does too.
I hope you all enjoy the game today and support both sets of players and officials with enthusiasm and respect.
Best regards,
Hello and a warm welcome to Dorking RFC.
I hope you all have a great day with us today where the community game is in a great place. I’d like to extend a special welcome to all traveling players, management, and supporters from Westcombe Park.
As a club we have had some great momentum of late with the Senior Men’s section doing well, the Women starting their campaign very well, and our Colts really showing what can be achieved when a club heightens its focus on Colts Development.
It comes as no surprise that all these achievements of late have taken some time and investment to materialise and thanks has to go to all those that are helping tirelessly behind the scenes to shape our club’s future.
Back to today:
Westcombe Park will be feeling very confident after beating Worthing last weekend and rightfully so as it was a good performance by them. I know that in 2021, when we got promoted to Nat 2, Westcombe Park was one of the few sides to beat us at home and that one is still with me. So today is a good opportunity to go and put that one to bed.
I hope you all have a good day with us here at The Big Field and lets respect the players, officials and each other as we cheer on our players.

Steve ‘Medium Steve’ Howorth is born and bred Cornish but made in Dorking! A great player that all the team are pleased is on our side when one of his bruising hits shatters an opponent. A 1st XV regular for over seven years, Dorking is now the proud home of this Goliath Cornish bruiser. Also an international player for those not in know!
What was your best memory from last season?
Earliest DRFC memory?
Having to do the dreaded ‘Four Corners’ drill in my first training session, if you know you know. Welcome to DRFC!
Rugby Inspiration?
I used to love watching Sebastián Chabal and Jerry Collins run at people, brutal ball carriers.
If you had to drive from the Big Field to Land’s End who from the club would you want in the car with you?
I’ll assume it’s a five seater here. I’d have Jasper and Finn on music duties, they make the Tuesday/Thursday trips from London less arduous. Big Max Sheldrake on the chat front and out of left field Will Sanders has proven early on to be a master of quiz questions.
Who would be the last person you’d take?!
Not a current club member but a DRFC legend all the same, Tom Hunt. As much as I love the bloke, he can’t last 5 minutes in a car without complaining/fidgeting or fiddling with the controls.
The away win at Barnes was a big one, as well as our Club Captain’s rendition of a certain Lord of the Rings extract which I think everyone will agree is a season highlight each year.
Who takes up most of the physios time?
This is a bit rich coming from me, but I’ll go with Cal Watson, 50% of the club’s tape budget is spent on his shoulders.
What do you like most about playing Rugby at DRFC?
You won’t find a better group of people than at Dorking, this isn’t just the players it’s the coaches, club staff and supporters. Best club I’ve played for by a long way.
Lauren, for many years, has been part of the club as a physio. However, her hidden talents as a player are a pretty recent discovery. Leading the women’s side in their first league campaign season, is testament to Lauren’s passion for the club and the team. The club is massively proud of her and all she’s achieved in the last few seasons.
Singing Avril Lavignes ‘Sk8er boi’ drunk as a skunk on my first physio bus in September 2014 with an audience of 1s players with their ties on their heads. I’ve never been prouder of getting a thumbs up and having a chorus of blokes passionately belting the lyrics back at me. It swiftly ended when the bus driver stopped at the services as I was desperate for a wee and a 5 litre bottle was not going to cut it.
Rugby Inspiration?
Marlie Packer, absolute machine and still playing for England at 33 years old. What actually got me inspired to start playing was years on the sideline as a physio for DRFC, loving team sport, wanting a new fitness challenge and hobby. When the women’s team restarted in 2021, I jumped at the opportunity, beginning my rugby career at a youthful 28 years old.
If you had to drive from the Big Field to Land’s End who from the club would you want in the car with you?
Ideally the whole team! But otherwise my pal, Leah. Guaranteed good vibes and previous car pooling experience so they’ve passed the vetting process. They’ll bring good snacks and we can waste a lot of time chatting about anything rugby, the latest club gossip and Lenny the dog. Sadly, there will not be enough space for anyone else as overpacking is guaranteed.
Who would be the last person you’d take?!
Tash Merrett, she’d try to make me fix all her ailments!
What was your best memory from last season?
Our first women’s tour to Wales! We went as CORKs as a final hoorah before we officially became Dorking for the 2023-24 season. We watched a womens Six Nations game (England thrashed Wales), played a local team (and won, i think? Alcohol was involved), explored Cardiff and the nightlife, did an epic pub crawl in Porthcawl in fancy dress and even managed to go to a spa.
Who takes up most of the physios time?
I’m pretty sure Leah wins this too (though I think I forced them to go on multiple occasions). At one point last season there were 3 issues at the same time but they got through it.
What do you like most about playing Rugby at DRFC?
Brilliant facilities, lots of support and such a fun, sociable, hardworking, passionate network of people. There’s always a friendly face to have a chat and a laugh with on arrival.
