Today, albeit a couple of days late, we are recognising International Women’s Day.
We are delighted to welcome Henley Rugby Club to the Big Field, with a special welcome to Dorking old boys, Will and Louis. I am sure Henley will be keen to avenge a narrow loss at home in the opening fixture. If today’s encounter matches the quality and excitement of the first we will all be in for a treat.
On the theme of former players we are delighted to have ex-Dorking and England winger Kay Wilson as our guest of honour. Kay, in common with George Kruis, is very present at the club and keeps an eye on all the players. Kay, we are all collectively proud of your achievements.
It is appropriate that Mole Valley Asset Management is our Lead Partner in the sponsor spotlight today. Craig and his team have always specifically supported and encouraged the growth of female rugby at Dorking. Craig, your support through good and less good times has been invaluable. We are very pleased with the progress made in girls’ and women’s rugby at Dorking - you can read more in Pip’s special feature a few pages in.
In addition, I would like to thank Downs, our Platinum Partner - with 3 tables of solicitors, the bar takings should be respectable! - and Chimney Fire Coffee, an official supplier as well as club sponsor, for your invaluable support. It is always a pleasure to see so many of our sponsors on match days.
I hope you enjoy the game and support the players from both sides and the officials with respect. I am sure both teams will entertain us with their skills.
Best regards,

Welcome back to the Big Field today.
With a sell out lunch and couple of great fixtures on the table today, it sure will be one great day of rugby. Welcome to all our Henley supporters, players, coaches and management. It’s been a while since you visited Dorking RFC and I hope you have a great day here with us.
Both Dorking and Henley tasted defeat last week and they will both be looking to put things right today. Ex-Dorking Minis, Youth and Senior player, who now lives with his beautiful family in Henley, is also visiting his grassroots club while still enjoying the game he loves - welcome back Will Crow. We also welcome back Louis Flynn, who played for Dorking last season and is in the Hawks’ squad today.
Special mention to the Dorking Women’s players who are here with us today too. You have been great this year and we are so proud of the fact that you are paving the pathway for our Dorking Youth players. It is only fitting you have a great day a nd that Kay Wilson is here to celebrate with us too. Welcome Kay, don’t forget to sign in to our Gym!
Lastly, welcome and thank you to the most supportive and faithful bunch of supporters and club sponsors this league has to offer. It makes every single week, month and season so much more purposeful knowing there is always a smile of support and a drive to develop when the boys step off the pitch. Amazing. Have a good day with us today and let’s get behind the boys.
All the best,
Roux Director of Rugby, Dorking Rugby Club #WACOMBinvested.
We offer free introductory meetings where you can discuss your finances and see if you need a full financial plan, just want to invest some savings, or you are good as you are.
For the last twenty years my pension was invested in one of the big providers, but as circumstances changed I felt it needed more of personal touch moving forward. Duncan and Craig took the time to listen and explain, thoroughly taking me through the options, the risk levels and potential outcomes, before helping me decide the right investments for me. We’re in constant dialogue and it really feels like they are watching out for me and my fund in the constantly evolving markets.”

Historically, participation in, and news coverage of, international, national and even local sports have been dominated by the male of the species - but, finally, times are changing.
At the Tokyo Olympics, 53.5% of Team GB were women. Both our Women’s Rugby and Women’s Cricket teams are ranked 2nd in the World (compared to the men’s teams in 6th and 3rd places respectively) and the Women’s Football team is ranked 4th (with the men in 5th). UK TV broadcasters have noted a huge increase in the number of people watching women’s domestic sports, including a greater proportion of women viewers. The heightened media coverage is not only promoting women’s sports, but is also making it more accessible, with participation at grassroots level increasing across the board.
Dorking RFC is proud to support Women’s and Girls’ Rugby and has done so for many years. Formed in 1988, the first Ladies team played regularly through the 1990s, culminating in them winning the North South Junior Cup in 1999. The first U15 and U18 Girls’ teams were formed during the 2000s with Kay Wilson, former England winger and our guest of honour today, being a Dorking Girl.
Girls’ Rugby was revived at the club in 2012, starting with about 10 girls aged 10 to 15. Having grown and developed over the years, the girls now account for around a fifth of the Minis & Youth
section, across 5 age groups (U11s, U12s, U14s, U16s & U18s) and playing regularly in friendlies, tournaments/ festivals and Waterfall Cup competitions. Training is twice weekly - Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings.
In 2018 we decided to restart the Women’s section, holding our first RFU sponsored Inner Warrior camp and initially playing Touch Rugby. With former players returning from University and new Youth players coming up through the ranks, we recognised the need to develop and grow the squad in to a full contact team. We formed a link with Old Caterhamians Women during the latter stages of the Covid-19 pandemic and formalised that relationship to play as a joint team in the Inner Warrior Development League this season and last.
Our playing numbers at Dorking have increased steadily in the last 12 months and we now have almost 30 players regularly attending training and available for matches. Many of our players were completely new to rugby when they first joined. We intend to enter the RFU’s NC3 League next season.
As a progressive and inclusive club, Dorking RFC is committed to putting Senior Women’s rugby on an equal footing with the Senior Men’s both on and off the pitch, with Strength & Conditioning sessions and a dedicated physio clinic. We train on Wednesday nights - 6.30 to 7.30pm in the gym, 7.30 to 9.00pm on the pitch, and 9.00pm to last orders in the bar!
For more information please contact either girlsrugby@dorkingrfc.com or womensrugby@dorkingrfc.com. You can also find us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and TikTok. We are a fully inclusive club welcoming players of all ages and abilities. No prior experience is necessary.
You don’t have to be young, you don’t have to be fit, to have played before, or to own the right kit.
You just need some trainers, and some fire in your heart. To find your Inner Warrior, come and take part.”

Here we are again, back at the Big Field – after what has been an extremely long succession of fixtures for the 1st XV Squad in 2023. Due to some re-arranged fixtures from last year, the boys have been playing back-to-back – the whole club tips their proverbial hat to the squad and staff for their dedication to the cause – thank you. Thanks must also go to our legendary supporters, following our team home and away. Your authors were delighted to see 100+ of you made the trip over to Guernsey at the weekend, drinking the local ale houses dry – and providing plenty of cheer and noise to the island. Locals reported on twitter that this was the best travelling support they had seen at this level – fantastic. It must also be mentioned that to our knowledge (!) all the tour party (playing and supporting) made it back to the mainland without having a brush with the local constabulary – surprising, I am sure you will agree – but an achievement given some of our fellow Nat 2 clubs’ recent visits! ‘Nuff said. A big welcome to our visitors Henley, a fine club we have had some fierce battles with over the years. Henley have a real ace up their sleeves these days, former DRFC star Will Crow!
Will plied his trade at Dorking from the age of 6 up until his late 20s, before he moved on to pastures new in Henley – in search of his now fiancée, Hannah. (Congrats to both Will and Hannah on the recent birth of their first child.)
Opening the archives, we found that Will’s last game in a Dorking shirt against his present club was way back in 2015. This was Dorking’s first ever season in National 2, finishing an impressive 4th. So, the boys travelled up to Henley for the last game of the season – Henley had already won the league, with the champagne and fanfare
looking to celebrate their final victory of the season, as well as the title. However, this was not to be! The mighty Dorks pulled it out the bag to win a thriller 34-41 with almost 1,000 spectators in attendance. It’s likely Will scored that day, as he did in most games – but let’s all hope he doesn’t at the Big Field today!
In the reverse fixture this season, we saw Dorking take an unlikely scalp on that occasion too, with DRFC players past and present having exclusivity on the try sheet. Alongside the likes of Emens with his “try of the week” contender, we saw the old familiar names of Crow and Flynn as the exRed and Whites tried to scupper their old pals, to no avail. That was also a debut for a Dorking new boy in Harry Mahoney who has taken to Dorking life as if he was born here. However, we sadly must report that Harry has decided to join a few other Dorking legends in recent times in hanging up his boots, at least for the foreseeable future, due to another head knock. Rarely do players fit so well in to such a family unit as is the Dorking Senior squad, but Harry did so with class and aplomb. We are sure there will be many of us who wish him all the best away from the pitch, but who will demand his presence back at The Big
Anyway, as you can probably tell, there is rarely an excitement like that when one of our own comes back to The Big Field. We may have sacrificed some of our usual rumours for a bit more nostalgia this week, but, rest assured, whatever the score on Saturday, there will be plenty on hand to shake the hands of those who donned our famous jersey. It is weekends like this that remind you of all the greats and hopefully you’ll all join us in sharing a beer with those who made it down to watch this Saturday and remind those who couldn’t that they are still very much in our thoughts.
All the best.
George
