The Dordt Difference Open any magazine or newspaper today and you’ll likely find a column on fitness and health. Celebrities and fitness experts all claim to have the magic formula for reaching the personal fitness levels we seek. Dordt College’s health and human performance (HHP) programs will help you become an expert in the human body. You’ll learn the key to longterm fitness within a perspective of living in God’s world. “The emphasis in Dordt’s program is on the life and development of the whole person,” says Craig Stiemsma, chair of the HHP department. “Our program emphasizes physical health as a way to provide balance to a life that is focused on serving our Lord.”

THE FACILITIES THE RECREATION CENTER Dordt’s recreation complex is an impressive facility that provides fitness and recreation opportunities to the entire campus community. It is home to the HHP department and benefits HHP majors directly. Recreation majors can put their learning into practice as they use fitness assessment and exercise equipment similar to what they may work with on the job. a 120,000-square-foot complex • volleyball and basketball court • weight room and fitness room • an aerobics room • NCAA regulation-size rubberized indoor track surrounding three courts for indoor track and field events • tennis and racquetball courts • a gymnastics room with an Olympicstyle spring floor • a 2,200-seat gymnasium • batting cages

THE ALL SEASONS CENTER The All Seasons Center is located across the street from campus. Run by the city of Sioux Center, it gives Dordt College students access to both the swimming and ice facilities. indoor swimming • water aerobics • ice skating • ice hockey

PROGRAM You may specialize in one of several emphases: exercise science • health • recreation • elementary or secondary physical education • a general HHP major Six HHP courses plus five core courses required of all Dordt students give HHP majors a broad background shaped by a strong Christian worldview. You’ll choose from a variety of electives to fit your emphasis. You’ll find many opportunities on campus to be involved in your field. Some students work as student trainers for the department and the athletic teams; others help teach HHP activity classes. Some coordinate the intramural program on campus or work in the Recreation Center. Many play on intramural teams, some assist in elementary school classrooms. Majors serve as assistant coaches for athletic teams and find opportunities to coach in local schools. Our students also help Special Olympic athletes in soccer, basketball, and track.

INTRAMURALS Dordt’s HHP department is committed to intramurals as a way for all interested students to participate in a variety of sport activities. The program has been immensely successful, with nearly half of our students playing on at least one team. In recent years, competition has been organized in sand volleyball (co-ed) • slow pitch softball (men’s, women’s, co-ed) • soccer (co-ed) • volleyball (men’s, women’s, co-ed) • basketball (men’s, women’s, co-ed) • bowling (co-ed) • floor hockey (co-ed) • badminton (co-ed)

INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS Although the HHP department and the college athletic teams are separate, most faculty coach the sport in which they have particular expertise. Faculty coaches bring the same emphasis to their sport as they do to the courses they teach. They stress a balanced life, fair play, good sportsmanship, and care for others. Dordt supports a broad range of intercollegiate athletic teams: For men: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, track and field, volleyball For women: basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, track and field, volleyball
