Athletics at Dordt College reflect the fact that Dordt is a Christian college. Whether on the field or in the classroom, we acknowledge Jesus Christ as Lord and the Word of God as the basis for all we do. A distinctively Christian philosophy of play and competition permeates athletics at Dordt College. We encourage athletes to work hard and develop their talents to glorify God. We are excited about athletics and the role they can play in a Dordt College student’s life. BaseBall The Defenders play about 40 games in the spring.
cross coUntry
The Defenders run in eight to 10 cross country meets.
Five players earned all-conference recognition at the conclusion of the 2012 season.
The men’s team qualified for the 2011 NAIA National Championship Meet.
Each season opens with a week-long trip to a warm weather location (in 2012 it was Arizona). The team has played early season games at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.
The Defenders had the individual GPAC women’s champion in 2009.
Jeff Schouten coaches the Defenders and is entering his 10th season.
Thirty-eight athletes have earned NAIA ScholarAthlete honors in the past seven seasons.
Coach Greg Van Dyke, who is entering his seventh season as coach, was named the 2011 Hauff Mid-America Sports/GPAC Coach of the Year.
Men’s Basketball The 2011-12 team finished in the quarterfinal round of the NAIA Division II National Tournament and recorded the most wins in program history with a 30-5 mark. Trevor Wolterstorff was named to the NAIA All-American Second Team. Cliff Warner claimed honorable mention honors and was named to the National All-Tournament team. Shawn Keizer earned the A.O. Duer Award which recognizes a junior male student-athlete in the NAIA who has excelled in character, playing ability, and scholarship. The Defenders had six athletes earn all-GPAC recognition at the conclusion of the 2012 season. The program has had 15 NAIA Scholar-Athletes over the last eight years. Dordt College features a junior varsity team. Coach Ross Douma is entering his fourth season with a 69-27 record at Dordt. He was named the 2012 GPAC Coach of the Year.
WoMen’s BasketBall The Defenders play the best competition in the country—12 of the last 13 NAIA Division II women’s basketball champions are members of the GPAC. Dordt has had 23 NAIA Scholar-Athletes the last nine years. Three players earned All-GPAC honors in 2012. The team also had a player named to the NAIA All-American Third Team in 2011. The Defenders have qualified for the quarterfinal round of the conference post-season tournament in seven of the last eight seasons. Dordt College features a junior varsity program. Craig Stiemsma will coach the Defenders for a 6th season in 2012-13.
Athletic Facilities Dordt College athletic facilities are top of the line for a college or university of its size. The Recreation Center, completed in the fall of 1997, is a 120,000-square-foot building with recreational opportunities for athletic teams and students alike. The Recreation Center offers an array of training and practice facilities for individual athletes and teams, including a spacious and well-equipped weight room, rubberized indoor track, field event areas, two rubberized volleyball/basketball/tennis courts, and a wood-floor court for volleyball and basketball. Open Space Park, located directly across the street from the college, is the site of the baseball and softball diamonds as well as the outdoor track facility and football field. The soccer field is located on campus.
footBall Dordt College started a varsity football team in 2008. The Defenders will play an 11-game schedule in 2012. The Defenders play the best competition the NAIA has to offer. The GPAC has had three playoff qualifiers the past two seasons.
Golf Both the women and men participate in a split season with meets in the fall and spring. The teams practice and play home meets at The Ridge Golf Course in Sioux Center.
The program has had seven players named NAIA Scholar-Athletes and two have earned Co-SIDA Academic All-American honors.
Both teams had one allconference performer with their top-15 performances at the GPAC events.
Eleven players earned 2012 post-season recognition from the GPAC.
Mark Christians and Tim Van Soelen handle coaching duties for the men.
The Defenders will field a team of nearly 100 players this fall.
Matt Nice, club pro at The Ridge Golf Course, coaches the women.
Greg Youngblood will coach his first season for the Defenders this year.
Softball The Defenders play about 40 games in the spring. The team has qualified for the GPAC post-season tournament 10 of the league’s 12 seasons. The program had the 2010 GPAC Player of the Year, and three players earned post-season recognition from the GPAC. Twelve players earned NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors in the last three seasons. Jeff Zomer will guide the Defenders for a fourth season. He served as both a baseball and softball assistant at Dordt College before taking the head coaching position.
BlaDes Hockey The team has qualified for the ACHA National Tournament three times. The Blades are 86-78-5 in the last six seasons. The ice rink for practice and games is located in the All Seasons Center, within easy walking distance of the Dordt campus. Bill Elgersma will be behind the bench for his fourth season in 2012-13. He served as an assistant coach before being named head coach.
Broadcast Information Most volleyball, basketball, and football contests are broadcast on KDCR 88.5 FM and online at www.kdcr. dordt.edu. Men’s soccer The program has had 19 NAIA Scholar-Athletes the past seven seasons. Three athletes have earned GPAC postseason honors in 2011. The Defenders have qualified for the eightteam post season GPAC tournament the last three seasons. Dave Schenk has coached soccer at Dordt for four seasons and has an 89-56-8 record.
WoMen’s soccer The program earned an NAIA National Tournament berth in 2008. The Defenders had perfect GPAC records in 2002 and 2008. Thirty-three players were named NAIA ScholarAthletes over the past seven years. Five players earned GPAC All-Conference honors in 2011. Dordt College featured the GPAC Player of the Year in 2008 and 2009. Dave Schenk has coached soccer at Dordt for four seasons and has an 89-56-8 record.
track & fIelD The Defenders run both an indoor and outdoor schedule. Dordt College has had at least one athlete qualify for the NAIA National Outdoor meet every year since 1983. Eight events earned NAIA All-American status during the indoor season and seven events earned the status in the outdoor season. Twenty-seven athletes have earned NAIA Scholar-Athlete recognition in the past three years. ď ź Last season, Briana Vander Woude was the NAIA National Champion runner-up in the multi-events at both the NAIA Indoor and Outdoor Championships. Vander Woude was named the performer of the year for both the GPAC Indoor and Outdoor Championships. Coach Craig Heynen, entering his sixth year at the helm of the program, earned 2012 GPAC Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year.
Volleyball The Defenders reached the NAIA National Tournament for the ninth time in Dordt College history in 2010. The Defenders have won the conference post-season tournament six times in the 12 year history of the GPAC. Dordt College has won nine GPAC titles in the past 12 years. The Defenders qualified for the NAIA National Championship Tournament in 1995, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008, and 2010. Four players earned GPAC post-season honors in 2011 and nine earned NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors. Chad Hanson will coach his second season at Dordt College in 2012. He came to Dordt with experience as an assistant coach at the University of Iowa and the University of Georgia. He also served as the interim head coach at Georgia in 2010.
Dordt at a Glance Dordt College Athletic Scholarships Scholarships are available to incoming freshmen who can contribute significantly to one or more athletic teams at Dordt College. These scholarships are renewable for an additional three consecutive years provided the recipient maintains a 2.00 cumulative grade point average and continues to participate in the awarded activity area. Graduate in the top half of your class. 2. A minimum 2.0 grade point average. 3. An ACT score of at least 18 or SAT of at least 860.
