City | Ciudad Doral residents expressed their concerns about the dangers of texting while driving.

T

he recent council meeting, which took place on March 14th, brought some important subjects to the community as it is to educate residents about the dangers of using cell phones while driving.

Every year more and more drivers behind the wheels are victims of accidents caused by the use of electronic devices such as GPS and cell phones. The text messaging or “texting” is one of the most commonly used tendencies by some drivers in recent years.

Recent studies done by the Department of Transportation show that texting and driving increases 23 times the potential of causing crashes or road accidents.

Doral Councilman Luigi Boria expressed the opinions of some of the residents of Doral.

“Constituents have approached me with concerns about drivers who are using their phones while they are behind the wheels,” Boria said.

Boria added that those who approached him claimed to have had mishaps with drivers who were texting and driving.

Meanwhile, 35 states have adopted laws, which prohibit or sanction the sending of text messages and the use of electronic devices such as cell phones while driving.

Some states have restricted only certain population groups such as teenagers and bus drivers. Washington, for instance, is one of the cities in which “texting and driving” it’s considered illegal and those who offend the law will be fined.

Ironically, Florida is among the 15 states that haven’t yet adopted laws restricting such tendency. Despite the widespread public support that this issue has generated, Florida lawmakers refuse to take action on this matter.

The lack of support to adopt this law usually comes at the hand of Republicans who believe that such actions limit the rights and personal freedom of citizens.

While Florida lawmakers do not approve a ban on sending text messages while driving, cities such as Doral, cannot take further measures on this matter since these decisions are taken by the state and not by the cities or municipalities.

As a measure of awareness, City of Doral council members signed an agreement on May, 2011 against texting and driving. The agreement was proposed by City Manager Yvonne Soler-McKinley, and had the approval of every single member of the council.

While the law remains inactive in Florida, studies done by the Texas Department of Transportation show that “Writing or reading a text message behind the wheel can more than double the response time of a driver.” To this can be added, that approximately 50 percent of U.S. drivers between the ages of 21 and 24 admit having sent emails and text messages while driving, according to a survey conducted by the National Federal Government.

Residentes de Doral expresan sus inquietudes sobre los peligros de manejar y textear

a junta de consejo de la Cuidad del Doral, la cuál tuvo lugar el pasado 14 de Marzo, discutió varios puntos de carácter importante para la comunidad como lo es el educar a los residentes sobre los peligros de utilizar aparatos celulares mientras se conduce.

Y es cada año más y más conductores al volante son víctimas de accidentes ocasionados por el uso de aparatos electrónicos como GPS y celulares. El envío de mensajes de texto o “textear”, es una de las modalidades más usada por algunos conductores en los últimos años.

Estudios recientemente realizados por el Departamento de Transporte demuestran que el textear y manejar aumenta 23 veces las posibilidades de ocasionar choques o accidentes viales.

En la pasada junta, el concejal Luigi Boria expresó las preocupaciones de algunos de los residentes del Doral quienes afirman haber tenido percances con conductores que texteaban mientras manejaban.

Por su parte, 35 estados ya han adoptado leyes que prohíben o sancionan el envío de mensajes de textos, así como el uso de aparatos electrónicos tales como celulares mientras se conduce.

Algunos estados han solo restringido ciertos grupos de la población como adolescentes y conductores de buses. Washington, por ejemplo, es una de las ciudades en que “textear y manejar” es considerado un delito y aquellos que infrinjan la ley serán multados.

Irónicamente, Florida se encuentra entre los 15 estados los cuales aún no han aplicado leyes que restringen esta modalidad. Y es que a pesar de la gran aceptación pública que este tema ha generado, Florida se niega a tomar cartas en el asunto. El fallo de esta ley se debe a que los republicanos crean que dicha medida es un atropello a los derechos de libertad de los ciudadanos.

Es por esta razón que algunas sectores, tales como el Doral, no pueden adoptar medidas que sancionen el textear y manejar, ya que dichas decisiones son de carácter estatal y por ende le competen al estado y no a las municipalidades.

Cabe destacar que como medida de concientización, miembros del consejo de la cuidad del Doral, firmaron el Mayo de 2011 una acuerdo en contra del textear y manejar. Dicho acuerdo fue propuesto por la Yvonne Soler-McKinley, Manager de la ciudad del Doral, y contó con la aprobación de todos y cada uno de los miembros del consejo.

Mientras la ley permanece inactiva en la Florida, estudios realizados por el Departamento de Transporte de Texas demuestran que el “Escribir o leer un mensaje de texto tras el volante puede más que duplicar el tiempo de reacción de un conductor.” A esto puede sumársele, que aproximadamente el 50 por ciento de los conductores Americanos entre las edades de 21 y 24 años admiten haber texteado o enviado mails mientras conducían, de acuerdo con una encuesta Nacional realizada por el Gobierno Federal.

City | Ciudad “Large Scale Land Use Amendment- Lakeside at Doral” Neighbors organized to demand City of Doral to meet a series of recommendations to avoid being affected by new construction.

he City Council approved Ordinance #2011-28 of the Mayor and City Council of the City of Doral. The Ordinance requested to change the land use designation from CMU (Community Mixed Use) for 16.1 acres to HDR (High Density Residential) for 14.6 acres and to Business for 1.8 acres, for the property located at north of 41 Street, between NW 114 Avenue and NW 117 Avenue. It also approved Ordinance # 2011-31, which requested the rezoning of 16.41 acres generally located at north of N.W 41st between N.W 144 Avenue and N.W 117th avenues, from CMU (Community Mixed Use) to “Lakeside at Doral” PUD (Planned Unit Development).

It was very important to have the presence of many residents of Sand Castle at the session. Under the leadership of the Home Owners Association’s president, they raised their voices and shared the following concerns: 1- Traffic: 114th street is quite narrow and does not seem wide enough to hold the increased residential and commercial traffic this project will drive.

2- The empty lot behind Sand Castle is damaging the rear yards of residents.

This was caused by the previous construction, which was initiated and then abandoned. The construction of an 8-floor building would be catastrophic.

3- Previous experience indicated that during Sundays and holidays, or very early in the morning, some workers made a lot of noise, because they needed to work overtime. There is also concern about the trash generated for the construction.

4- Added population density will require more places in schools.

There is a genuine concern about whether it has been planned to add capacity at local schools to accommodate new students.

5- The entrance of this community will be only on 41st street, very close to entrance and exit of the Turnpike: the congestion is imminent. Parents of EBT students will need to make a detour by 41st in order to get the school.

At the meeting, the Mayor and the City Council supported these observations and recommended actions. The project developers commented as follows: 1- They will revise the project design to minimize traffic congestion.

2- They will not build an 8 floor building 3- It will not be allowed to work on holidays, Sundays and outside of the allowed times.

4- There is a commitment to remove debris daily and keep the site clean.

5- The project was presented to MDCPS to contemplate the need for new places in schools 6- They will review the possibility of changing the construction plans to build an alternate exit to reduce the unnecessary use of 41st street.

As noted by the participants, no one is against progress, provided it is ordered and does not harm anyone. The neighbors ‘s observations were highly valued, and above all accepted. There is a real commitment.

a ordenanza # 2011 -28, del Alcalde y Consejo de Ciudad del Doral, por la cual se solicitaba un cambio en la designación del uso del terreno ubicado en el norte de la calle 41, entre las avenidas 114 y 117, fue aprobada por unanimidad el 14 de marzo en la reunión del Consejo de la ciudad.

El cambio implicaba pasar 16.41 acres de CMU (Comunidad de uso mixto) a 14.6 acres de HDR (Residencial, alta densidad) y 1.81 acres para uso comercial. En la misma reunión, también fue aprobada la ordenanza #2011-31, la cual solicitaba la rezonificación de los 16.41 acres (CMU) del terreno mencionado a “Lakeside at Doral” PUD (Desarrollo de unidades planificadas).

Con la presencia de muchos vecinos, residentes de la urbanización continua “Sand Castle”, quienes liderados por el presidente de la asociación de propietarios elevaron sus voces y compartieron sus inquietudes: 1- Trafico: La calle 114 es bastante angosta y no parece ser suficientemente amplia para aguantar la congestión que provocará la salida de automóviles provenientes de este proyecto, que no sólo es residencial si no también comercial.

2- El terreno vacío que existe detrás de la propiedad de Sand Castle está dañando los patios posteriores de los residentes, los está desnivelando. Esto fue originado por la construcción anterior, que fue iniciada y luego abandonada. El planteamiento de la construcción de un edificio de 8 pisos sería catastrófico para los vecinos.

3- Experiencias anteriores indicaron que durante domingos y festivos, o muy temprano en las mañanas, se han realizado muchas veces trabajos de construcción con los molestos ruidos que implican, aún sabiendo que la ley lo prohíbe. También hay inquietud por la basura que generará la construcción.

4- La densidad poblacional exige mas cupos en escuelas. Existe una genuina inquietud acerca si se ha planificado bien la capacidad de las escuelas locales para albergar a nuevos estudiantes.

5- La entrada única será por la calle 41, muy cerca de entrada y salida de la autopista Turnpike (que tiene semáforo). La congestión será inminente Los padres de familia que lleven a sus hijos a la escuela publica correspondiente (EBT K-8) deberán desviarse hacia el trafico de la calle 41 indefectiblemente.

En la sesión, el Alcalde y Concejales apoyaron todas estas observaciones y recomendaron medidas. Los agentes responsables de la construcción se comprometieron en lo siguiente: 1. Se buscara diseñar el proyecto de una forma que no implique excesiva congestión vehicular 2. El edificio no será de 8 pisos, se planteará la mitad 3. No será permitido trabajar en festivos, domingos ni horarios fuera de la ley. Hay compromiso de retirar escombros diariamente y mantener la limpieza del lugar.

4. El proyecto fue presentado a MDCPS para contemplar la necesidad de nuevos cupos en las escuelas 5. Se vera la posibilidad de cambiar los planes de construcción a fin de construir una salida alterna que evite el uso de la calle 41 innecesariamente.

Como lo indicaron los asistentes, nadie esta en contra del progreso, siempre y cuando sea ordenado y no perjudique a nadie. Estas observaciones de los vecinos fueron bien valoradas, comprendidas y sobre todo aceptadas.

Hay un compromiso real.

AARP launched a national conversation about health and financial security You’ve Earn a Say gives Florida residents a platform to make their voices heard in the debate on Medicare and Social Security

I

n front an audience of over 100 community leaders and media members, AARP launched You’ve Earn a Say, a new chapter in the debate of public policy in the United States.

The facilities of Intercontinental Hotel at Doral were the scenery in which this National conversation took place.

You’ve Earn a Say, name of this campaign, is an open dialogue on strengthening the health and retirement security.

AARP is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people over 50 years old to improve their quality of life.

Through this campaign, AARP is opening the debate on Medicare and Social Security, which is usually done behind closed doors in Washington, and is ensuring that all citizens can be participants in this discussion about its future.

“Instead of talking about Medicare and Social Security as lime items in the federal budget, Washington should be talking about how to strengthen health and retirement, and ensuring Americans have a say in the debate,” said AARP CEO A. Barry Rand at the event in Virginia. “Our members and older Americans have contributed to Medicare and Social Security throughout their working lives and have earned the right to speak about the future of these programs.”

Citing research shows that 95 percent of Americans believe that Washington should spend more time listening to the views of ordinary citizens when it comes to decisions regarding Social Security and Medicare.

Tu voz es Tu Derecho, nombre de esta campaña, es una diálogo abierto sobre el fortalecimiento de la salud y la seguridad durante la jubilación.

A través de esta campaña, AARP, una organización sin fines de lucro dedicada a ayudar a personas mayores de 50 años a mejorar su calidad de vida, está por primera vez abriendo el debate sobre Medicare y el Seguro Social, el

Martha Díaz, una de las invitadas a la charla en Miami, expresó sus inquietudes y preocupaciones respectos a estos temas. Díaz explicó que durante 20 años trabajo con una empresa de servicios de comida hasta que en el 2005 fue despedida. Al ser removida de su cargo, Díaz no solo perdió su principal fuente de ingreso monetario sino que también todos sus beneficios como seguro médicos entre otros. Díaz quién tan solo tiene 55 años, aún no califica para recibir su retiro, y teme estar a la espera de un beneficio que quizás nunca llegue.

Otras de las invitadas manifestó su preocupación por el constante aumento de los costos de atención medica en la nación. Cuqui Firvida, quién fue una paciente de cáncer relató que el Medicare solo cubrió los primeros 6 meses de gastos medicinales.

A partir de ese momento, su farmaceuta le comunicó que el tipo de medicina que ella estaba recibiendo ya no sería cubierta por el seguro médico. De allí en adelante, Firvida se vio forzada a pagar 360 dólares mensua-

La vicepresidenta ejecutiva de AARP, Nancy LeaMond, describió una serie de actividades mediante las cuales Tu Voz es Tu Derecho ayudará a los estadounidenses a que se haga oír su voz.

“Queremos darles a los estadounidenses una manera de hacerse oír,” expresó LeaMond.

“Y estamos comprometidos a hacer de Tu Voz es Tu Derecho una conversación inclusiva con nuestros socios y personas adultas de todas las edades,” agregó.

En la Florida, alrededor del 97 por ciento de las personas que fueron encuestadas dijeron que Medicare es importante para la salud durante la jubilación, mientras que un 96 por ciento dijeron que el Seguro Social es importante para la seguridad financiera durante la jubilación. Y mas del 50 por ciento de Floridanos mayores de 18 años, esperan que el tanto el Medicare como el seguro social estén vigentes para cuando se jubilen.

In Florida, about 97 percent of people who were surveyed said that Medicare is important for health in retirement, while 96 percent said Social Security is important for financial security in retirement. Over 50 percent of Floridians over 18 years, expect both Medicare and Social Security are in place for when they retire.

Regarding the Hispanic community, 21 percent are not sure they can count on Medicare, while 22 percent maintained the same view about Social Security.

Martha Diaz, one of the guests at the Miami’s conversation, spoke about her concerns regarding these two issues. Diaz explained that she spent 20 years working with a food catering company until she was fired in 2005. Aside of being removed from her position, Diaz not only lost her main supply of income but she also lost her benefits such as health insurance among others. Diaz, who is just 55, and not yet eligible for retirement, fears to be waiting for a benefit that may never come.

Cuqui Firvida, is also another guests that has let her voice to be heard. She was concern about the steady cost increase of Medicare and medical supplies. The Lady who was a cancer patient explained how Medicare only covered the first 6 months of medical expenses.

From that moment on, her pharmacist told her that Medicare would not cover the kind of medicine she was taking. Thereafter, she was forced to pay out of pockets $360 a month to cover the expenses in medicines.

“Tu Voz es Tu Derecho se trata también de asegurar que todos los estadounidenses reciban información clara y equilibrada acerca de los programas y las propuestas que se debaten en Washington,” dijo Rand.

“El Seguro Social y Medicare son la base de la seguridad en la jubilación para millones de estadounidenses. Al trabajar juntos, participar y hacer oír nuestra voz, podremos lograr que el Seguro Social y Medicare se mantengan sólidos para las generaciones actuales y futuras,” Rand agregó.

I’m still not retired because I consider myself an active person, however, many jobs do not hire me for being considered old, “she said. “Yet, every month I have to pay the hospital bills as well as the checkups I need to do every three months.”

As these two ladies, there are many others similar cases not only in Florida but also across the nation, of people who expect the government give them the benefits when they retire.

“You’ve Earn a Say is also about making sure that all Americans receive clear and balanced information about the programs and the proposals being debated in Washington,” said Rand. “Social Security and Medicare are the foundation of retirement security for millions of Americans.

By working together, participate and make our voices heard, we can make Social Security and Medicare will remain strong for current and future generations.”

Maria Celeste Arraras, recognized Hispanic female journalist and host of Al Rojo Vivo was invited as a spokesperson for this initiative in Florida.

“The Medicare and Social Security are important issues for to the community. When you give the problem a face as, for instance, the lady who cannot get a job because of her age and consequently what she has saved it is almost gone in medicines, is when [we] realize that it is a problem that affects

“Estamos muy contentas de contar hoy con la participación hispana. AARP es la organización sin fines de lucro, mas grande del país, y a pesar de esto solo tres millones de hispanos son miembros de esta asociación,” dijo Ruiz.

“Hoy es por el seguro social y el Medicare, mañana será por las Universidades, pero debemos ser participes en todos los eventos que le conciernen a la comunidad,” añadió.

Community | Comunidad Dade County is most vulnerable to hurricanes, tornadoes and floods

Miami-Dade authorities get community ready with post disaster reconstruction plans

B

etter safe than sorry, the saying goes. And this is why, on to the possibility of emergencies that could result in hurricanes, tornadoes and heavy rains, Miami-Dade County officials discussed prevention plans with the community (business owners, neighbors, organizations, etc.) at the Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue Headquarters in Doral.

Between 2004 and 2005 hurricane season resulted of 12 storms that made landfall in Florida, 7 of them requiring presidential emergency declarations in order to receive help. This meant billions of dollars in damage, so as to begin a long process of reconstruction.

This experience brought forward the value of a pre-planning phase for long-term rebuilding in case of disasters. If you are not prepared for the complexity of the reconstruction in a short time after a disaster, local authorities may have problems with recovery decisions and may miss opportunities for public participation in the future rebuild efforts of that community.

To be more efficient in responding to disasters, local governments should plan what should happen after rescue and recovery efforts have been carried out, through a Post Disaster Redevelopment Plan (PDRP) that local governments can create to achieve a long-term recovery and reconstruction strategy in pursuit of a sustainable community”, said Paul Vitro, Emergency Management Planner for Miami-Dade.

“The purpose of this initiative is to create a process for preparing vulnerable communities to get ready for the contingency that occurs at the time of and after overcoming the emergency phase.”

This initiative reduces County vulnerability to disasters. Allows the community to recover much faster and takes the opportunity to strengthen and build the community, “the reaction speed is always important in the reconstruction because it helps keep the businesses running, to rebuild infrastructure and build houses for those who are left homeless. When failing to act timely you cannot control the process.”

What is a PDRP? The PDRP is the Post-Disaster Redevelopment Plan gives the community an action plan after a disaster and avoids a late reaction. PDRP identifies policies, operational strategies, roles and responsibilities that will guide decisions to achieve long-term recovery and community reconstruction after the emergency.

Paul Vitro indicated that opportunities for risk reduction and community improvement consistent with the objectives of local comprehensive plan and with the full participation of citizens should be emphasized.

“Recovery Topics include: sustainable land use, repair and reconstruction of housing, business resumption and economic reconstruction, restoration of infrastructure, health and social support services, environmental restoration, financing considerations, and short-term actions that affect the recovery of long-term reconstruction and other recovery issues identified by the community.”

The intention of the PDRP is to apply in any disaster, regardless of the danger as long as the damage requires reconstruction efforts. “The flexibility of the implementation of the PDRP structure and range of issues addressed can be used for various risks.

The scope of PDRP is maximized when used for

major disasters affecting the whole community, but its components can be used in small and localized disasters.”

The Miami-Dade County authority said that without a long term recovery plan, efforts to combat the consequences that occurred after a disaster can mean a delay in achieving a stable community again.

“By creating a process for making smart choices and prepare a longer term post-disaster recovery plan allows the community to react more efficiently with concrete actions rather than quarreling. By identifying appropriate mechanisms for planning, financial assistance, and the role of each agency, the community takes the road to recover as quickly as possible. Demonstrate an efficient and effective use of taxes after a disaster is very important too for the public’s perception of recovery efforts.”

Can Disaster become an opportunity?

A disaster can turn into tragedy, but a community can also create opportunities to overcome mistakes and to move forward with plans to improve their future. In case of disasters, local authorities are under pressure to return to normal.

“Without a vision to guide them - ended Vitro short-term decisions may inadvertently restrict the long term solutions and affect sustainable recovery, ignoring the opportunities presented.

The PDRP strengthens the process of recovery and communities benefit when assessing their risk levels and develop a plan for long-term reconstruction.”

Autoridades de Miami Dade preparan a la comunidad para planes de reconstrucción post desastre

ás vale prevenir que lamentar, dice el refrán. Y este es el motivo que tuvieron autoridades de Miami-Dade para discutir con la comunidad en general (dueños de negocios, vecinos, grupos de interés, etc) en la sede del Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue en Doral sobre planes de prevención ante la posibilidad de emergencias que podrían ocasionar huracanes, tornados y fuertes lluvias.

Entre los años 2004 y 2005, la temporada de huracanes arrojó como resultado 12 tormentas que tocaron tierra en el estado de Florida, 7 de ellas merecieron importantes declaratorias presidenciales de ayuda. Esto significó billones de dólares en daños, para comenzar así, un largo proceso de reconstrucción.

Esta experiencia puso en primer plano, el valor de la planificación previa para la fase de reconstrucción a largo plazo de los desastres. Si no se está preparado para la complejidad de la reconstrucción en un corto tiempo después de una catástrofe, las autoridades locales pueden tener problemas con las decisiones de recuperación y pueden dejar pasar oportunidades para la participación pública en la reforma futura de esa comunidad.

Para ser más eficientes en la respuesta a los desastres, los gobiernos locales deben planificar lo que debe suceder después de llevadas a cabo las operaciones de rescate y recuperación, a través de un Plan de Reconstrucción Post Desastre (Post-Disaster Redevelopment Plan, PDRP) que los gobiernos locales pueden crear para lograr una recuperación a largo plazo y la estrategia de reconstrucción en la búsqueda de una comunidad sostenible”, explicó Paul Vitro, Emergency Management Planner para el Condado Miami-Dade.

“El propósito de esta iniciativa es crear un proceso de preparación para que las comunidades más vulnerables puedan prepararse ante la contingencia en el momento de ocurrir y después de superada esa fase de emergencia”.

Esta iniciativa reduce la vulnerabilidad del Condado a los desastres. Permitirá que la comunidad pueda recuperarse mucho mas rápido y aprovecha la oportunidad de fortalecer y construir a la comunidad, “la velocidad de reacción siempre es importante en la reconstrucción porque ayuda a mantener los negocios en funcionamiento, a reconstruir la infraestructura y edificar casas a quie-

nes se quedan sin vivienda. Si no se actúa con velocidad no se podrá controlar el proceso”. ¿Qué es un PDRP? El PDRP es el Plan de Reconstrucción Post Desastre (Post-Disaster Redevelopment Plan, en ingles) Esta iniciativa le da a la comunidad un plan de acción para después de ocurrido un desastre y evita una reacción tardía.

PDRP identifica las políticas, las estrategias operacionales, los roles y responsabilidades que guiarán las decisiones para lograr una recuperación a largo plazo y la reconstrucción de la comunidad después de la emergencia.

Paul Vitro, indicó que se hace hincapié en aprovechar las oportunidades para la reducción de riesgos y mejoramiento de la comunidad en concordancia con los objetivos del plan integral local y con la plena participación de los ciudadanos”.

Temas de recuperación incluyen: el uso sostenible de la tierra; reparación y reconstrucción de viviendas; reanudación de negocios y la reconstrucción económica; la restauración de la infraestructura, la salud y servicios de apoyo social; restauración ambiental; las consideraciones de financiamiento, y las acciones a corto plazo que afectan la recuperación de reconstrucción a largo plazo, así como otras cuestiones de recuperación identificadas por la comunidad”.

La intención del PDRP es estar en cualquier desastre, independientemente del peligro siempre y cuando el daño requiera esfuerzos de reconstrucción.” La flexibilidad de la implementación de la estructura de PDRP y la variedad de temas dirigidos permite que sea usado para varios riesgos.

Demostrar de una manera eficiente y efectiva como se usan los impuestos después de un desastre es demasiado importante para la percepción del público sobre la recuperación”. ¿Desastre convertido en oportunidad?

Un desastre convertido en tragedia, también puede crear oportunidades para superar errores y dar un paso adelante con planes para mejorar la comunidad. Ocurrido el desastre las autoridades locales están bajo presión para volver a la normalidad. “Sin una visión que los guie – finalizó Vitro - decisiones a corto plazo pueden restringir inadvertidamente el largo plazo, y afectar la recuperación sostenible, pasando por alto las oportunidades que se presentan. El PDRP fortalece el proceso de recuperación y las comunidades se benefician al evaluar de sus niveles de riesgos y elaborar un plan de reconstrucción a largo plazo”.

“Girl Scouts” troop gets recognition for their 100 Anniversary

T

he City of Doral council meeting gave recognition to the “Girl Scouts” troop for its 100 years of existence and social work.

Girl Scouts is a solid organization that was founded in 1912 and which today has more than two million three hundred thousand girls in the United States.

One of the major contributions that this organization provides not only lies in promoting the social work and welfare that these little ladies give to their communities but also in educating and the values that are taught to them.

Age is nothing but a number!

For being a Girl Scout maturity isn’t precisely a requirement. Girls as young as 5 years old can be as part of a troop as 11 and 12 years old girls.

Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez presented the award along with the other four members of the city council. Many of Doral’s troop members attended with their proud mothers to receive this award.

It should be noted that despite its short period of time, Doral’s troop has today the largest squad of Girl Scouts in the Miami-Dade County.

Six years ago, Troop 552 of Doral started with only 13 girls but today it has over 71 members, which demonstrates the excellent work that this organization has been doing during these 100 years of existence.

The Girl Scouts organization has become a large family, which has expanded to more than 145 countries.

Congratulations to these girls for being part of such a wonderful and productive association!

a pasado junta de consejo de la cuidad del Doral otorgó un reconocimiento a la tropa de “Girls Scout” por sus 100 años de existencia y labor social.

Girls Scout es una organización sólida que se fundo en el año 1912 y la cuál hoy en día cuenta con más de dos millones trescientos mil niñas en los Estados Unidos.

Una de las mayores contribuciones que esta organización brinda no solo radica en fomentar la ayuda social que estas pequeñas dan a sus comunidades sino también está en la formación y los valores que se les inculca a las niñas.

Y es para ser Scout no se necesita de una gran madurez, ya que niñas de tan sólo 5 años de edad así como señoritas de 11 y 12 años, puedan formar parte de esta organización.

El reconocimiento fue otorgado por el Alcalde del Doral Juan Carlos Bermúdez y por los cuatro miembros que conforman el consejo de la cuidad.

Gran parte de las integrantes de la tropa del Doral asistieron junto a sus orgullosas madres a recibir este premio.

Es importante resaltar que con a pesar de sus pocos años en vigencia, las tropa del Doral poseen hoy en día la cuadrilla más grande de Girls Scout en el condado de Miami-Dade.

Seis años atrás, la tropa 552 del Doral estaba formada por tan solo 13 niñas pero hoy día su número alcanza las 71 integrantes lo cual demuestra la excelente labor que esta organización ha venido realizando durante estos 100 años de trayectoria. La organización de Girls Scout se ha convertido en una gran familia la cuál se ha expandido hacia más de 145 países. ¡Felicidades a estas jovencitas por ser formar parte de tan maravillosa y fructífera asociación!

he City initiated Doral Design District master plan has taken a significant step forward with the incorporation of the Doral Design District Merchants Association, Inc., effective February 14, 2012. The newly formed Merchants Association will be made up exclusively of licensed business and property owners who have a physical presence within the Doral Design District. The Merchants Association will be led by a seven member Board of volunteers headed by Tony DeRosa and Steve Musolino as President and VP, respectively, along with Armando Alvarez as Treasurer and Ernesto Avino as Secretary to represent the Executive Board. Former Vice Mayor Robert Van Name, will serve as a Special Advisor.

The purpose of the Merchants Association is to promote and enhance the profitability and public image of merchants and businesses within the “Doral Design District”, providing Marketing, Branding, Advocacy, training and support to the Doral Design District Merchants Association membership.

The Merchants Association will encourage our merchant and associate members to conduct business through teamwork, professionalism and ethical principles and most importantly it will create

a unified Business Community Voice within the Doral Design District, “One Voice … One District”!

The Doral Design District concept was first introduced to the Doral City Council by Former Vice Mayor Robert Van Name in 2004 to formalize and promote the Design, Tile & Marble, and Building Trades industry sprouting along the NW 79th Avenue and surrounding areas.

Since inception, the City has done a magnificent job facilitating this project with the creation of a Doral Design District Master Plan, a Feasibility Study on the development of a major “Trade-Conference Center within the District, formalized a “Signage Program” with street signs, banners and an entrance features to designate the design district. The City also created a Doral Design District Steering Committee to advise and promote the design district development and is planning a major “Street Fair” in the fall of 2012 to Kick-off and promote the Doral Design District. Details on the Doral Design District can be found on the City website www.CityofDoral.com

Association President, Tony DeRosa states, “he is excited for the opportunity and potential to bring the merchant, business and owner community of the Doral Design District together in a united voice and to move the project forward. I look forward to working effectively with the City of Doral and the Merchant Members to promote and facilitate the Doral Design District.”

Vice President, Steve Musolino who will spearhead the Merchants Associations initial membership drive states, “he is amazed at the significant progress that has been made in the establishment of the Merchants Association and looks forward with enthusiasm in working with the Merchant Members and the City to finally make this great project happen!”

The Cambridge Program, A source of success in Doral Doral Reagan Senior High students obtain results that placed them among the best students in the country and the world

I

t is often said that the key to success is found in making the most out of the opportunities you are given. This goes hand in hand with making the right, properly informed, decisions.

Most Doral residents have heard something about the Cambridge program before yet only a few are actually aware of its true value and what it can mean for your children. This statement comes after the continuous queries on whether this program is actually worth it, whether it makes a difference, and if it really produces results. Anyone that has gone through the program will speak of the great sacrifices one must go through, of giving up some of your best days in high school and sometimes even putting your social life behind. Yet very little has been written on the subject, even as the results continuously prove to be very positive.

Over 55 students received these recognitions, highlighting: Ricardo Gomez who was awarded the Top Student in The World Award for Spanish and the Top Students in the USA: Hiroshi F. Aida (Chemistry), Maria G. Boria (Biology) and Diego A Rojas (French). Let us introduce you to them: Ricardo Gomez is a 17-year-old venezuelan native and a junior student; he has been living in the U.S the last 8 years. As his teachers continue to emphasize, he is a very focused and determined student. He plans on studying mechanical or aerospace engineering. He considers Spanish as another resource that will make him a competitive

We spoke with Mrs. Teresa Sarduy, the RRDSH Cambridge Program principal, who put aside her busy agenda to take the time and inform us about the program, its benefits, it’s importance, and above all, the many accomplishments our students have obtained over the life of the program. Mrs. Sarduy gave us a list of facts in reference to the student’s performance as of June 2011: - Top in the World: Highest standard mark in the world for a single subject.

professional; he enjoys literature and appreciates being able to read to great Spanish works in their original language. He agrees that the Cambridge program is the most difficult program available but feels that with the right adjustments and proper time management, one can find success. He also insists that the benefits from the program are numerous, the program takes a lot but gives back a lot and leaves you in the best possible position for applying to top universities and scholarships. Ricardo is convinced that what he learns in RRDSH will serve him throughout his life in all aspects. Having already started to see results, he continuous his high school career in a confident and determined fashion.

Hiroshi Aida, a senior student, feels that the Cambridge program is more oriented towards the university and professional life and thus he feels he has been properly prepared. He admits that he had to work very hard and under a lot of pressure but he found success in correctly organizing his priorities.

Hiroshi was accepted into Emory University where he plans to study medicine with a pre med in Biomedical Sciences.

Maria Boria, a senior student too, sums it all up to proper time management and establishing priorities. She has been accepted into Boston

College and UM and is trending towards studying Pre Med. She warns that the transition from 8th to 9th grade can be very difficult and one has to ignore any shortcuts along the way. Such is life and one must accept these things to succeed. Hiroshi closes with the following message, “There are three important things in a Cambridge student’s life: social life, sleep, and good grades. You can only choose two.” Turns out it is as simple as that.

The schools administration, through principal Dr. Jacques Bentolila tells us the following: “We are very proud of the accomplishments of our Cambridge AICE Academy students.

Their performance illustrates their hard work and dedication as well as the phenomenal program that is offered here and Ronald Reagan/Doral Senior High School. This is just the beginning of the awards and accomplishments they will be receiving in their educational journey.”

We also want to congratulate their teachers Maria Cabra, Sanchez-Ramon, Ms. Maria Pardo, and Ms. Patrycja Prokopowicz, for preparing them for these rigorous exams.

Mas de 55 estudiantes recibieron estos reconocimientos, resaltado Ricardo Gómez, que obtuvo el premio como “El Mejor del Mundo” (Top in the World) para Español, y también los mejores del país (Top in

USA): Hiroshi F Aida (Química), Diego A. Rojas (Idioma extranjero: Francés) y María G. Boria (Biología).

Hablamos con ellos y nos compartieron sus experiencias, aquí se las presentamos: Ricardo Gómez /Top of the World: Estudiante de 11vo grado, 17 años, nació en Venezuela y vive en éste país hace 8 años. Como dicen sus maestros, es supremamente aplicado y piensa estudiar ingeniería mecánica o aeronáutica. Considera el español como un recurso adicional que lo hará un profesional mas competitivo; gusta de la lectura y aprecia el hecho de poder los grandes autores hispanos en el idioma original. No niega que el programa Cambridge es el más difícil que los programas, sobre todo cuando recién se ingresa a 9no grado, pero con los ajustes adecuados y el buen manejo del tiempo, se consiguen los objetivos. Los beneficios de estudiar un programa tan avanzado son enormes nos insiste… “Cambridge te exige pero te enseña, te preparar mejor para la universidad y te coloca en una posición de ventaja pues las universidades cada vez son mas exigentes en el tipo de preparación de los postulantes y con las becas que pudieran proporcionar”.

Ricardo esta seguro que lo aprendido en RRDSH le servirá de base para toda su vida, ya sea profesional, laboral o social. Esta tranquilo pues se siente bien preparado, sabe que todo lo bueno cuesta esfuerzo, pero ya comenzó a conocer los resultados de su sacrificio.

Por su parte Hiroshi F. Aida, (Top in USA), estudian-

te senior nos dice que el programa Cambridge esta mas orientado a la universidad y a la vida misma, por eso se siente bien formado. Admite que es mucho trabajo y está bajo mucha presión, pero si uno sabe elegir bien sus prioridades, es posible sobresalir, como en su caso. Hiroshi fue aceptado en Emory University y piensa estudiar Pre medicina y su especialización será en Ciencias Biomédicas.

María Boria, (Top in USA), nos dice a su vez, que “sobresalir en el programa Cambridge es cuestión de un buena administración del tiempo personal”. Como sus compañeros, habla de tomar decisiones y establecer prioridades. Ha siso aceptada en Boston Collegue y UM; Se orienta también a estudiar Pre medicina.

Advierte que el paso de 8vo a 9no grado es siempre difícil, pero que hay ignorar las voces que te orientan a buscar lo mas fácil. La vida no es así, solo triunfan los que se esfuerzan y no tienen miedo de sacrificarse.

Hiroshi concluye con un mensaje: Hay tres cosas importantes en la vida de un estudiante de Cambridge: “ Vida Social, Dormir Bien y Buenas Calificaciones”… de esas tres hay que elegir dos … Así de fácil, nada mal para un futuro medico…

Diego Rojas no pudo atendernos pues lo tenían requerido en una presentación de la escuela. En futuras ediciones incluiremos sus comentarios, pero agregamos lo que nos dijo la Sra. Sarduy: “Un alumno brillante y muy dedicado, gracias a él, RRDSH alcanza renombre no solo en un idioma extranjero, ya dominamos dos: español y francés, eso dice que vamos por un muy buen camino”.

La administración de la escuela, a traves de sus director Dr. Jackes Bentolila nos dijo estar muy orgulloso de los logros de los estudiantes del programa Cambridge AICE. “Su actuación muestra su arduo trabajo y dedicación. El programa que se ofrece aquí en Ronald Reagan /Doral Senior High School es de primer nivel y los resultados lo demuestran así. Este es sólo el comienzo de grandes éxitos que nuestros alumnos irán recibiendo a lo largo de su educación en este plantel”, dijo Bentolila.

Desde estas líneas felicitamos a los maestros, María Cabra, Sanchez-Ramon, María Pardo, y Patrycja Prokopowicz, por haber preparado también a estos estudiantes. Sin duda, el programa Cambridge es un programa de éxitos.

S

e dice siempre que la clave del éxito es poder aprovechar siempre las oportunidades que la vida da. Esto en base a tomar buenas decisiones que a la vez son posibles, si se cuenta con la información correcta. Quizás la mayoría de los residentes Doral saben lo que es el programa Cambridge, pero la valoración real y la significación de éste en la vida de un estudiantes, no es comprendida si no por muy poca gente. Esta aseveración surge de la cantidad interrogantes que existen con respecto al programa, desde si realmente es importante, si vale la pena, si es completo, si marca una diferencia, si sirve, si existe algo mejor, etc.

Los grandes detractores hablan de los grandes sacrificios que tienen que sufrir los estudiantes para poder certificarse, insisten en que es un programa muy difícil, que desvirtúa el sentimiento genuino de que la mejor época de la vida que se da en la escuela secundaria, donde se sientan las bases del desarrollo social. Y la verdad es que poco se ha escrito, quizás porque es un programa relativamente nuevo, pero los frutos ya se están haciendo notar y de que manera.

Hablamos la con Sra. Teresa Sarduy, directora del Programa Cambridge en RRDSH, quien pese a su ocupada agenda, se dio un tiempo para informarnos acerca del programa, sus beneficios, su importancia y sobre todo de los increíbles logros que en pocos años han ido obteniendo sus estudiantes. La Sra. Legal Spot | Leyes Florida Legislature passes law for stricter penalties against human and sex trafficking

he Florida Legislature passed companion bills HB 7049 and SB 80, providing for harsher penalties for those convicted of human and sex trafficking. Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz sponsored an item last September that urged state lawmakers to follow suit with a law passed by the Georgia General Assembly, which imposes a 25-year minimum prison sentence for using coercion to traffic someone under the age of 18.

The new Florida law increases the penalty for the crime of human smuggling from a first degree misdemeanor to a third degree felony. A judge presiding over a human and/or sex trafficking case can authorize the interception of wire, oral, or electronic communications when such interception may provide evidence of human trafficking in progress. In addition, operators of massage establishments and their employees must present valid government identification to an investigator of the Department of Health or law enforcement upon request.

Commissioner Diaz has remained a staunch advocate of tougher laws to prevent and break up sex trafficking rings in South Florida. According to recent legislation sponsored by the commissioner to identify trafficking victims at Miami-Dade’s airport and seaport, about 293,000 youths in the United States are currently at risk of being victims of commercial sexual exploitation. Many of these children are runaways who leave abusive and neglectful homes and become involved in prostitution for financial support or by force. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has identified the state of Florida as the third largest trafficking hub in the country.

“We can’t crack down on the people who organize these human trafficking rings without substantial penalties put in place for the crime,” said Commissioner Diaz. “One thing is clear: the trafficking of innocent people, particularly minors, is becoming far too prevalent in South Florida. These updates to our Florida statues will help law enforcement bring these criminals to justice.”

On a local level, Commissioner Diaz spearheaded a training program at both Miami International Airport and PortMiami for employees to identify and respond to suspected victims of trafficking. He also supported the recently passed Safe Harbor Act, which provides safe houses and treatment for young trafficking victims.

El Comisionado José “Pepe” Díaz patrocinó un artículo en septiembre que exhortó a los legisladores del estado a sumarse a una ley aprobada por la Asamblea General de Georgia, que impone una sentencia mínima en la penitenciaría de 25 años por usar coacción para traficar a alguien menor de 18 años.

La nueva ley de la Florida aumenta la sanción por el crimen de contrabando humano de un delito menor en el primer grado a un delito mayor del tercer grado. Un juez que preside sobre un caso de tráfico humano y/o sexual puede autorizar la intercepción de comunicaciones por telegrama, orales o electrónicas cuando tal intercepción podría brindar evidencia del tráfico humano en curso.

Además, los operadores de establecimientos de masajes y sus empleados tienen que presentar una identificación gubernamental válida a un investigador del Departamento de Salud o de las fuerzas que imponen las leyes cuando se la pidan.

El Comisionado Díaz ha sido un apoyador acérrimo de leyes más severas para prevenir y destruir las redes del tráfico sexual en el sur de la Florida. Según legislación reciente patrocinada por el comisionado para identificar

a víctimas del tráfico en el puerto y aeropuerto de MiamiDade, alrededor de 293,000 jóvenes en los Estados Unidos corren el riesgo actualmente de ser víctimas de la explotación sexual comercial. Muchos de estos niños huyen de hogares abusivos y negligentes y se involucran en la prostitución para ganarse la vida o porque los obligan. El FBI ha identificado al estado de la Florida como el tercer centro neurálgico más importante del país con respecto al tráfico.

“Nosotros no podemos tomar medidas enérgicas contra estas personas que organizan estas redes de tráfico humano sin que existan castigos considerables por el crimen”, dijo el Comisionado Díaz. “Una cosa está clara: el tráfico de personas inocentes, especialmente menores de edad, se está convirtiendo en algo demasiado frecuente en el sur de la Florida. Estas actualizaciones de nuestros estatutos de la Florida ayudarán a las fuerzas que imponen las leyes a llevar a estos criminales ante la justicia”.

A un nivel local, el Comisionado Díaz encabezó un programa de capacitación en el Aeropuerto Internacional de Miami y el Puerto de Miami para que los empleados puedan identificar y acudir a víctimas cuando se sospecha el tráfico. El también respaldó Safe Harbor Act (Ley de Refugio Seguro) recientemente aprobada cual provee refugios seguros y tratamiento para víctimas del tráfico jóvenes.

Our City of Doral does not escape this reality; investors are still coming and there is where having the support of media that has skills, training and infrastructure to support city businesses in their marketing strategies becomes a necessity. Media that allow investors to establish new relationships and alliances and help them enter the market in Doral with a strong approach are the ones that make the difference and become more successful as well.

The main marketing strategies include advertising in print and audiovisual, virtual presence and integration with social networks.

Shelton Academy: At the Forefront…

pring is upon us and soon Shelton Academy’s summer camp will be, too! Construction has already begun for a large swimming pool and a multipurpose court for basketball, soccer, volleyball, and tennis.

“Camp Shelton” is open to children entering preschool through 8th grades (ages 2-15), and is organized to give each child opportunities for individual growth, learning new skills, making friends, and developing teamwork.

Gabriella Ferr, co-owner of Shelton Academy, said, “We have chosen ‘Childhood is a short season... Let this summer be a memorable one at Camp Shelton!’ as our slogan. We encourage parents to enroll their children today in

one of our unique camp programs to give them a great start on their educational journey!”

Camp Shelton is dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of children, families, and communities. Its mission is to increase personal awareness, instill confidence in self and others, and build strong ties and healthier communities.

At the same time, it will provide a memorable summer experience. To do so, the program encourages experimentation and fosters self-direction. According the school’s website, its strengths lie in the quality of the staff and the depth of the program.

The staff prepares for the summer with an orientation program aimed at creating a safe and dynamic environment in which each camper will get the most out of the experience. s una tentación comenzar con “En un lugar de…” un articulo sobre alguien para quien el personaje cervantino se ha convertido en imagen y espejo de su personalidad. Hasta físicamente se parece a la definición del sustantivo: “Hombre alto, flaco y grave cuyo aspecto y carácter hacen recordar al personaje de Cervantes”.

Y aunque el verbo “Quijotear” no existe, William Echeverría vuelve acción la definición de Quijote como “Hombre que antepone sus ideales a su conveniencia y obra desinteresada y comprometidamente en defensa de causas que considera justas” (DRAE) William Echeverría es periodista, locutor y reportero. Premio Municipal y Nacional de Periodismo y Ex-Presidente del Colegio Nacional de Periodistas de Venezuela. Hasta junio del 2011 condujo en Caracas el programa “En la Mañana” en el canal Globovisión y tiene mas de 20 años de experiencia en el periodismo de calle, el periodismo en serio, ese que se mezcla con los hechos y la noticia y reporta sin miedo lo que oye y lo que ve. El periodismo que asume las consecuencias de sus actos, enfrenta las injusticias, denuncia, critica, aporta a la comunidad y ayuda a construir un mundo mejor.

Periodismo sin máscaras. Aunque actualmente reside en Houston, TX está en proceso de trasladarse con su familia a Doral a iniciar nuevos proyectos, entre ellos un Taller de entrevistas y reportaje para TV el próximo 31 de Marzo.

Compartió con Doral Family Journal un café y su filosofía de vida, la experiencia de su cruzada para proteger la Libertad de Expresión en Venezuela y sus primeras impresiones de la ciudad que pronto llamará su hogar.

“Sábete Sancho, que no es un hombre mas que otro, si no hace más que otro”. Cervantes, ‘Don Quijote’, Parte1, Cap.XVIII DFJ: Tu Twitter se llama @Quijoteando ¿Te consideras un Quijote? En la definición dice que “defiende causas sin lograrlas” ¿Qué piensas de ello?

Para mi el Quijote es el símbolo del idealismo en su máxima esencia. Por eso es el @Quijoteando. Es una filosofía de vida. Sé que a veces el que mucho fantasea, el que mucho ‘lee libros de caballería’ puede volverse loco, pero yo creo que ese ingrediente de locura tiene que estar presente en tu desarrollo como ser humano. El que tiene esas dosis de locura se arriesga, y el que arriesga gana, el que fantasea sueña, y el que sueña puede proyectarse por encima de lo que los demás piensan. Quien no

sueña, no logra sus objetivos. El ser humano que no sueña no se motiva, no se motoriza y se queda estancado para toda su vida. Por eso es que para mí los objetivos si se cumplen. Tratar justamente sobre todo de ayudar a los demás se consigue a través del sueño, a través de esas dosis de locura, a través de ‘Quijotear’.

DFJ: ¿y quién es tu Sancho?

Mi esposa. Ella es quien le da la dosis de realidad a todo este equipo que es el matrimonio. Yo soy el que fantasea, el poeta, el loco, el que crea y ella es la que me aterriza. Pero aparte de ser Sancho Panza es mi Dulcinea.

DFJ: Te dijeron una vez malcriado por no recibir un premio ¿lo eres?

No, eso es rebeldía. Es renunciar a un premio que venia de un gobierno que ha atacado tanto a los medios de comunicación, a los periodistas, a los reporteros, a los que están en la calle. Recibirlo era inconsistente con mis valores y mis principios. Tenía que hacerlo y se hizo. Es un llamado de convicción, de decir

‘las cosas no son así y deben tomar otro rumbo’.

DFJ: ¿Siempre quisiste ser periodista?

Mi padre es músico y me cuenta que me daba un micrófono de una vieja grabadora que era de cinta y él me ponía el micrófono y yo empezaba a hablar, a cantar, a decir y pasaba horas hablando. Ahí había una Actitud y una Aptitud. Cuando llegó el momento de decidir mi padre quería que estudiara abogacía “es que periodista puede ser cualquiera” y yo le decía: “es que yo quiero ser periodista, quiero estar con la noticia, quiero abordarla, quiero estar ahí en el momento que se produzca”. Creo que los hechos de alguna manera han ido confirmando que yo hubiera sido un pésimo abogado.

DFJ: La Comunicación Social es una profesión exportable.

Si. La Comunicación Social es mucho más abierto, pero también mucho más competido. No podemos hablar de comunicación sin tomar en cuenta que hay otros profesionales que ejercen un derecho que da la Declaración Universal de Derechos Humanos, poder hablar, poder comunicarte, la libertad de expresión. Tú no puedes decir que el periodista es el único que tiene la exclusividad de informar. Eso es miedo a la competencia. Si tú tienes una buena lectura, tú lees y te informas, vas a hablar bien, vas a escribir bien. No tengas miedo.

Tú conoces las herramientas pero tienes que darle contenido.

rado con lo que he visto en Texas. Los contrastes son evidentes aun cuando la ciudad donde vivía en TX también tiene mucha población venezolana. Allá todo el mundo entra por un solo carril, no veo excesos que en una semana he visto aquí. Hace falta, supongo que debe existir ya, una instancia creada por las mismas autoridades para mediante charlas, seminarios, acercamientos, conformar liderazgos por sectores para explicar las reglas y endurecerlas. Lamentablemente aprendemos cuando nos duele. Te ponen una multa y si te la repiten estoy seguro que tu comportamiento tiene que cambiar.

El sueño de mantener Doral como una ciudad tranquila, armoniosa, ordenada, próspera y segura es el deseo de todos y con el compromiso de la población podemos hacerlo realidad. Vale la pena ‘Quijotear’ para lograrlo. ¡Bienvenido William a tu nueva casa! Nos hacía falta un Ingenioso Hidalgo en Doral.

vo proyecto de vida con mi familia. Obviamente he ejercido el periodismo más de 20 años de mi vida y los tiros van por ahí.

Pero no estoy cerrado a desarrollarme en otras áreas. Sé que el mundo de las organizaciones no gubernamentales en los EEUU es muy amplio y me llama mucho la atención ayudar a los inmigrantes ilegales desde acá.

Sobre Doral, me parece una ciudad que esta organizada.

El desarrollo de las áreas urbanísticas están muy bien preservadas y mantenidas, la vialidad, los servicios, las actividades, los centros cívicos, grupos de intereses deportivos, etc. que me parecen muy buenos. Me llama mucho la atención que la gente toca corneta en la calle, es un poco caótico y también el basurero que hay en el norte, el incinerador. No entiendo que hace ese basurero ahí. Fue lo primero que como periodista me pregunté. Estaba corriendo, sentí el olor, y empecé a preguntarme que intereses habrá detrás.

Me parece que es una ciudad que geográficamente está ubicada muy estratégica, cerca del aeropuerto, el downtown y otros sitios neurálgicos de Miami. Me llaman la atención los aviones que te pasan por arriba, uno no esta acostumbrado.

DFJ: ¿Qué piensas de la influencia de los venezolanos en esta comunidad?

Veo que en Doral la influencia de la comunidad venezolana es muy grande. Somos bulleros y por eso nos destacamos, pero mas allá de eso veo iniciativas editoriales como Doral Family Journal dirigidas por venezolanos. Hay una competencia por llegar a esos venezolanos que aquí residen. Es como un pequeño país que tenemos aquí. Hay una mixtura de distintos tipos de venezolanos y estratos económicos. Tenemos un aspirante a alcalde de origen venezolano; es un indicio de por donde va la influencia en la ciudad. Eso indica el poder de decisión de los venezolanos. Creo que esto va in crescendo.

Espero encontrar en Doral orden, respeto y normas mínimas de convivencia. Pienso que es una labor de cada quien, ciudadana. Todos tienen que tomar conciencia. Desconozco si existen ordenanzas, imagino que si. Hay que aplicarlas, si no sigues las reglas paga la multa. Que te duela en el bolsillo.

Las autoridades tienen que hacer un esfuerzo mayor, porque percibo desorden y anarquía compa-

mueve y que te inspira para echar para adelante y superar todo eso.

Mi fortaleza son Dios, la Virgen y mi familia.

Contra esos tres no hay fuerza oculta que me que pueda doblegar. Yo siempre digo que tus creencias espirituales, tu desarrollo espiritual y religioso y el amar a tu familia te blindan frente a cualquier intento de desacreditarte o de humillarte.

DFJ: Cuando un medio o un periodista es atacado o saboteado cual es a tu parecer la mejor reacción Cuando un periodista o un medio es atacado lo primero que debe hacerse es no quedarse callado, que la colectividad lo sepa. Hay una cifra negra de muchísimos periodistas que son agredidos y no lo dicen. Parece una incongruencia, el periodista quedándose callado. Si eres periodista y te están golpeando denuncia. La mejor defensa a un periodista o a un medio que lo ataquen es hacerlo publico en el momento. No a los dos días, a la semana, sino en el momento porque entonces los agresores se dan cuenta que existe un apoyo de medios que están haciendo pública la violación al trabajo de un reportero. Lo mismo aplica para un medio de comunicación.

DFJ: Y en caso de acusaciones de vilipendio por ejemplo ¿qué hacer?

Asesorarte legalmente. En Venezuela hay una serie de ONG’s como ‘Espacio Publico’ que ayudan.

Nosotros creamos la Comisión Nacional de Protección del periodista (CONAPRO) que incluye al Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores de la Prensa, el Colegio Nacional de Periodistas y Espacio Publico y otras organizaciones, el Círculo de Reporteros Gráficos. En el momento que se producía una agresión contra un fotógrafo o periodista se activaba la red. Espacio Público nos daba toda la asesoría Legal de manera gratuita y ellos hacían el conteo de las denuncias que iban acumulándose por violaciones o agresiones en contra de periodistas o de medios. Eso era recogido en un informe y en 3 oportunidades fuimos a la OEA en Washington a denunciar al Estado Venezolano por Violaciones a Libertad de Expresión. Esto es gracias al trabajo de llevar estadísticas, fotografías, videos y una serie de pruebas argumentadas. En el momento oportuno esos casos se activarán y se hará justicia.

En mi vida será hasta que me muera “arepita con mantequilla”. Esa es mi frase, porque siempre será así aunque por supuesto esté abierto a otros sabores, como la panqueca, el hot dog y la hamburguesa. Siempre “arepita con mantequilla” por mi Venezuela. Estoy entregado a iniciar un nue-

She always liked to “portray the simple things: a bench, a window, a roof but only if they had artistic lines. That always was my principle” Now, however, Yanina is devoted to more personal projects “that come from my heart”, photos that are capable of telling a story.

ALMA FINE ART GALLERY: A dream comes true.

“The idea was to start a studio where artists from different disciplines and styles might come and work with us,” says Yanina. Once established in the Wynwood space they decided to open the gallery on the second Saturday of the month with different participating artists to join the Gallery Night that takes place in the district. “The truth is that it makes us very happy, because we have advanced much more than anything on networking with other artists; we are in fact now surrounded by artists. It all comes to the point where we are able to make room for emerging artists, those who cannot afford a gallery to exhibit their photographs or paintings.

As we are also emerging artists, we want to give others the possibility to have exhibitions too. Our gallery is a project where we have put our heart and soul. Hence the name of the gallery.”

Additionally, the art displayed in “Alma Fine Art” has a transcendent purpose. Therefore the last Gallery Night on March 10th was aimed at supporting the “A21 foundation” that leads a crusade against human trafficking worldwide.

VERONICA GRASSI: Noting “Other’s Lives” One of the most recent works of Veronica Grassi is the series “Other’s Lives” which she describes as “a generally personal history, which has a whole plot. It has to do with that me watching people. I like to understand what is happening, why people act a certain way. It has much to do with psychological issues, with personality. People often lose their way, their own desires, trying to be aware of what the next door neighbor is doing, they waste their lives just watching, li-ving other people’s lives.

From that point of view is where I did the series; it is like a person who is looking through a door ajar trying to understand, see, feel, think what is the life of another. This is also why everyone has a different reaction to the photos, depending on their personal history. “ Veronica’s future projects include continue taking classes to learn techniques of artistic intervention and keeping capturing the images that most impress her to display them. She wants to continue

telling stories through the lens of her camera. For her “to be able to show my photos is my greatest accomplishment.”

Monti were exhibited this year at Art Basel. There she was able to show the series of photos taken in the workshop of her grandfather “just as he had left it, everything old, aged, if you see the photos they have very little light. It shows that darkness that lies there, because he is gone.”

With work and constant observation, Yanina has made progress since the time she asked for “a good camera for Mother’s Day” with which to take some photography courses, to being able to develop a concept before starting to shoot. Her artistic evolution has been so remarkable that her latest series of portraits called “Fantasia” was selected to be part of the display on the Argentine consulate pavilion in the past Arte Americas 2012 exhibition.

This honor makes her proud because “The truth is that you can have a studio but to be an artist you have to work hard and believe you are one. You have to express what comes from your soul. You have to be convinced that what you did is what you wanted to do.”

rgentine photographers Yanina Grassi and Veronica Monti made their dream come true of having a space to show their creative sides. With the guidance of Artistic Director Carlos Tirado and Vicky Kunzendorf ‘s hand on public relations, these talented Doral residents have established for almost a year in Wynwood a collaborative art gallery where they can share their work with the public and provide other artists from different disciplines with the same opportunity.

The Wynwood Art District is part of the same name neighborhood located in North Miami, between 36th and 20th streets, west of NE 1st Avenue. It is an area whose development over the past 10 years has been led by Goldman, the same entrepreneur who developed Miami Beach and Soho in New York. This area, which for years was made up solely of warehouses and factories is now home to over 70 galleries, museums and collections that, on the second Saturday of every month, open their doors for the general public to admire the work of those artists who have their headquarters there. One of these galleries is Alma Fine Art. Artistic photography styles of both are complementary and evolving. Each of them wants to highlight what most called the attention of their surroundings. Veronica photographs people expressions, people moving, and “a personal story.” Meanwhile, Yanina seeks to show “the simple things of life from an artistic standpoint.”

Formal in Sneakers A fun way to help the American Cancer Society

The ten pieces of art donated by each schools arts department competed for various honors and would be centerpieces of a silent art auction. While the proceed from the silent auction would go to the Relay for Life Event of Doral to fight cancer, the participants, many in

n March 9th, at the Carlos Albizu University‘s campus and hosted by the Rotary Club of Doral, a great event known as “Formal in Sneakers” took place. This event theme, which as the name implies, featured its entire guests dressed in formal attire while sporting sneakers. A truly fun and exciting evening full of food, fun, art, music and plenty of entertainment; as we kicked off the 2012 School Spring Break. All the while raising funds to benefit the American Cancer Society Relay for Life Doral / 2012 fight.

The event itself was designed to showcase the works of our young artist from our local schools

attendance completed to the honors of being the school whose art raised the most funds as part of the contribution to the American Cancer Society.

The honors include a special award from the Rotary Club of Doral to the school whose art raised the most money for charity in this event. To the young artist whose art piece sold for the highest donation.

Many of the “would be” young artist and their parents were present and buzzing around the artwork in curious hopes of the soon to be announced winners. While the auction silently progress through the night the crowd in attendance was entertain by a parade of incredible local talent including world renown trumpeter “Johnny Holliday”, jazz music ensemble “Indigo Trio” and the incredible sounds of DJ Extreme. Along our music we had singers and entertainers like Joseph Maurell, Paola Odoardi, Alicia Bruni, Clara Cowley.

Ms. Ydabelle Hurd the Director of Talent Zone a part of Doral Conservatory School of the Arts, was a great support for the event.

The crowd was mesmerized by the martial arts exhibition put on by Master Frank’s Tai Kwon Do Demonstration team. We spoke to one of the organizers, the Rotarian Gerardo Reyes and he said he was satisfied with the results of the event, but mostly from the response of the community in this important cause. In Gerardo Reyes words: “The Rotary Club of Doral would like to extend a special thank you to our sponsors, without you the

The night and the event came to an end. The Rotary Club of Doral was pleased to announce its 2012 Formal in Sneakers Event silent Art Auction winner was Ms. Rhiana Suarez, from Doral Middle School. The piece of art that was the winning piece was: “The Rose” Photograph. “That was the first picture I took accidentally. After I saw it I was inspired to continue taking pictures of ordinary things” tells us Rhiana and she added: “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see”. This young artist aspires to continue her pursuit of art and is also attending the Doral Conservatory. Rhiana’s Mother Mrs. N. Suarez tells us “my daughter has always had an affinity for the fine arts and it is my true pleasure that her work could go to such a fine cause as the fight for cancer. She is so happy, I can’t begin to tell you how happy and proud I am.”

Mr. Reyes who is part of the “Rotary Club of Doral Relay for Life team, told us that “The Objective of Rotary” is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular our club, to encourage education for our children, support of the arts and community involvement. They have a four-way test of the things that they say and do:

1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Ella está muy feliz, yo no tengo palabras para expresar lo orgullosa que me siento”, dijo Nelsy Suárez, madre de Rhiana.

Gerardo Reyes, quien es parte del equipo del Relay for Life Doral Rotary Club, nos dijo que el objetivo de Rotary “es estimular y fomentar el ideal de servicio como base de toda empresa digna ,fomentar la educación para nuestros hijos, el apoyo de las artes y la participación de la comunidad. Tienen una prueba llamada “ las 4 preguntas” por la cual todo lo que hacen o dicen, lo hacen una vez conseguidas las respuestas afirmativas : 1. ¿Es la VERDAD? 2. ¿Es EQUITATIVO para todos los interesados?

n las instalaciones de la Universidad Carlos Albizu, se llevó a cabo el 9 de marzo, un gran evento organizado por el Club Rotario del Doral. El nombre del evento “Formal en Zapatillas invitaba a los participantes a vestirse elegantemente, pero usando zapatillas deportivas. Todo lo recaudado iba a beneficio de American Cancer Society /Doral Relay for Life.

Fue una noche verdaderamente divertida y emocionante, llena de buena comida, diversión, arte, música y mucha alegría, ya que concedió con el inicio del receso escolar de primavera de 2012.

El evento en sí, fue diseñado para exponer las obras de nuestros jóvenes artistas de las escuelas locales del Doral: Rolando Espinosa K-8, John I. Smith K-8, Eugenia B. Thomas K-8, Doral Conservatory, Ronald Reagan, Doral Senior High, Divine Savior, Doral Middle School, y Charles Hadley K-8. Cada una de las diez escuelas participantes, a través de su departamento de arte, ofrecieron diez obras de arte que compitieron por varios honores y al final se destinaron como piezas centrales de una subasta silenciosa. El total de los ingresos de la subasta iban a ser donados a la causa de la lucha contra el cáncer, y la escuela que más fondos recaudara, seria acreedora de un premio especial del Club Rotario del Doral. Pero eso no era todo, el joven artista cuya pieza de arte fue vendida al valor mas alto.

Muchos de los “futuros” artistas y sus padres estuvieron presentes y pulularon alrededor de sus trabajos con la esperanza de ser los ganadores que pronto se anunciarían. Mientras que la subasta progresaba a través de la noche, un desfile de increíble talento local se fue presentando, como el mundialmente conocido trompetista “Holliday Johnny”, el conjunto de música de jazz “Trío Indigo” y los increíbles sonidos de DJ Extreme. Oil crisis in the United States Gasoline prices are going up and there is a lack of vision by our Federal Government to lower prices and achieve energy independence.

or the last three year NAFAPAC has published several articles addressing the need for a Comprehensive Federal Energy Policy that will liberate the United States from the Middle East oil dependency. Today, our dependency on foreign oil is even more critical than ever.

The civil unrest in countries in the Middle East since the beginning of 2011 have created uncertainties with the supplies of oil for Europe and United States, and there are greater concerns about the long term U.S. economic recovery. The intentions of Iran to develop a nuclear bombs and fears by Israel of a nuclear attack by Iran are creating more instability in that part of the world. There is no doubt that Iran is determined to exterminate Israel and a war between the two countries can result in the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz disrupting the flow of oil tankers to the Western Hemisphere and European countries. This potential conflict is already affecting the cost of oil in the world market and in the United States. When are we going to deal with our oil independence in the United States?

At the present time, the price of a barrel of oil varies between $100 to $110 and the average price of regular gasoline grade in the United States is near $3.90 per gallon and higher in many parts of the country, and going up each day. Many economists and oil analysts are predicting that the price of gasoline will reach $5.00 per gallon by summer. Many companies depending on transportation are being affected as well by the high cost of fuel and it may force them to layoff employees by summer to survive. The high cost of gasoline and food are also creating a hidden inflation for every family and our economic recovery is in great danger. Just ask a housewife if her grocery budget of 6 months ago will be enough to cover the cost of groceries today. The bottom line is that, drastic steps must be taken by our Federal government to prevent another economic recession caused by the high gasoline and food prices, and more unemployment.

We have seen administration after administration, and Congress after Congress since the 70’s talking about the oil independence whenever there is an oil crisis in the Middle East, without implementing comprehensive energy

policy for the future. Every time we elect a new president, he comes out with his own agenda on how to solve the energy problems and the “oil experts” in the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives schedule hearings and more hearings without reaching an agreement on how to solve the oil problems in the United States. There is no vision!

Americans are getting tired of the rhetoric and no action! President Obama now claims that the gasoline consumption in the United States is down under his administration. However, this is misleading information since there are over 12 Million unemployed Americans staying home and cutting down on driving and many companies are cutting down on driving as well to deal with the slowdown. President Obama also claims that oil production is up in the United States; however, increases in oil production are up only on private land and substantially down in public land as a result of more regulations.

Records indicate that oil exploration in public land is down by 40%.

This administration also wants to take credit for increases in oil production in private land but the fact is that these increases are the result of policies initiated by the previous administration and gone through several steps of permitting application, federal approvals, exploration, deliveries to oil refineries, oil refining process into gasoline and distribution to gas stations which may take 5 years or longer before reaching the consumer. It is obvious that our leaders in Washington fail to understand that any decision made today will not see good results for several years down the road. Recent polls indicate that 61% of Americans disapprove the way our President is handling the gasoline prices. Other polls indicate that about 70% of Americans feel that this administration is doing very little to deal with the high gasoline prices and it has no clear solution on how to handle the problem. Again, there is no vision!

The most recent energy related controversy is the Keystone pipe line.

The Keystone Pipeline System will be used to transport synthetic crude oil from the Athabasca Oil Sands in northeastern Alberta, Canada to multiple destinations in the United States, including refineries in Illinois, oil distribution hub in Oklahoma,

and oil refineries along the Gulf Coast of Texas. This pipeline will bring millions of gallons of synthetic crude oil in the U. S. Market and it is estimated that the construction of this pipeline will generated up to 20,000 jobs and $7 billion in investments to stimulate the US economy. However, the Keystone pipeline has become a political ‘hot issue” after the President postponed the construction of this pipeline until further environmental studies are done. Many feel that this is a delaying tactic by this administration to please their environmental supporters in an election year. Many construction labor unions and members of Congress are in favor of building this pipeline to reduce the dependency on foreign oil and create jobs.

Our leaders in Washington ignore the basic economic principle of Supply and Demand. That is, the more supply of a product, the lower the prices to the consumer. Increasing oil drilling and supplies within the United States can reduce the cost of gasoline. This approach will liberate the United States from the dependency on the Middle East suppliers and price manipulation by OPEC and speculators due to political unrest in the Middle East. Again, there is no vision!

Other factors impacting the high gasoline prices in the United States are the regulations imposed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and a moratorium on the exploration of oil in our territorial waters and public land. These regulations and the moratorium are hurting our economy. The Energy Department is also pushing for a “Green Policy” and it has approved loans to Solyndra and others which have proven to be failures and waste of taxpayers’ money.

We will be naive thinking that some other source of energy will totally replace the need for oil in the next 100 years.

There is another reality with the increasing oil demand by China, India, South Korea and other emerging economies which are also creating a shortage of oil in the world market. United States needs to expand the exploration of oil in its territorial waters and public land. Our energy independence must be based on a combinations of more oil explorations, more oil production, more ethanol production, more clean coal, more natural gas applications,

more nuclear energy, more supplemental sources of energy as solar and windmills, more research and development on the combustible engine efficiency for automobiles and less regulations.

The bottom line is that Americans are frustrated with our leaders in Washington for their lack of action to reduce the cost of gasoline which is already affecting the budget of every family in the country.

In March 2009, the price of a gallon of gasoline was $1.84 and now $3.90 per gallon and rising. Are you better off now than 4 years ago?

All things considered, there is little chance for any mayor energy policy development or compromise in Washington on this election year and the trend by the leaders in Washington is to blame the oil companies, the oil speculators and others for their failure to find solutions. In a recent speech, our President told the nation that the energy policies implemented by his administration are the right policies; but the high prices at the gasoline pumps are demonstrating the opposite. We are living in times of misleading information and plenty of demagoguery by our political leaders.

We are committed to speak out to educate the consumers with facts and encourage our leaders in Washington to find solutions to our energy crisis, protect the national security of this nation and bring prosperity to every American in “One Nation under God.” Proverbs 16:3 tells us, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.” God bless you all!

Yoga: Beyond Just a Good Looking Body

he practice of Yoga offers several benefits for our mind-body & soul.

However, ultimately the practitioner is the one who sets the intention or the goal for her/his own practice, and as a Yoga instructor, I try to share with my students that Yoga encompasses more than physical practice.

If you practice Yoga consistently you will receive many benefits such as: increased flexibility, increased strength, improved digestion, increased circulation, loss of weight, detox and more. I enjoy seeing a student that at the beginning would see a challenging pose as an impossible feat to do, and after just a few yoga classes that same student could achieve and master that pose, is very exciting! Perhaps, the constant practice gives the student not only the necessary strength and flexibility in order to achieve the pose, but also confidence in a more personal and spiritual level, empowering them to believe in themselves.

Besides the amazing health benefits that the practice has to offer, Yoga also allows a person to create within their mind a state of tranquility which leads to the achievement of better concentration; not only at the Yoga class but in their everyday life. I find this especially true with beginner students, whom I observe struggling to find focus during the first few sessions because their mind and body are not yet trained or practiced to have awareness of breathing, body alignment, and mind focus at the same time. The majority of the time most people are very absorbed in what I refer as “survival mode” in their fast paced daily lives, which rarely allows time for reflection and observation.

The beauty of Yoga is that while you are in class you discover how to connect these key elements; mind, breathing, and body, which allow you to quiet your mind, release stress, increase relaxation and connect with your true inner-self.

After the Yoga class I often ask students to reflect upon their observations of the effect of this practice within them. The most common responses are feeling more peaceful, clearer mind, feeling more grounded and detoxified.

There is Yoga for everyone, there are many different styles of Yoga for different personalities; if you are looking for an energizing class I would suggest a Vinyasa Flow class or a Rocket Yoga class, or if you are looking for a slower pace class you could try Hatha Yoga or Dharma Yoga, just to mention a few styles, but there are several different options for each person.

Since beginning my journey into Yoga I have had teachers that have inspired me, and that has kept me practicing with them. After trying different styles of Yoga and different teachers, you will find the Yoga style that suits you best and the Yoga teacher (s) that you can feel inspired and connected with.

I encourage everyone to begin an amazing journey into a Yoga path; there is Yoga style for everyone’s life including: kids, adults, seniors, pregnant woman, even for animals too!

Yoga: Más Allá De Un Cuerpo Bonito

a práctica de Yoga ofrece muchos beneficios para nuestro cuerpo – mente y alma; pero a la final el practicante es el que pone la intención o el objetivo para su propia práctica y como instructora de Yoga, trato de impartir a mis estudiantes que el Yoga abarca más allá que una simple práctica física.

Si se practica Yoga con frecuencia, entre los muchos beneficios que usted recibirá están el aumento de flexibilidad, más fuerza, mejor digestión, aumento de circulación, pérdida de peso y desintoxicación. Realmente es increíble ver cuando un estudiante que al principio veía una postura desafiante prácticamente imposible de lograr, después de unas pocas clases de yoga, el mismo estudiante logra dominar esa postura… ¡es muy emocionante! La práctica constante da al estudiante no sólo la fuerza y flexibilidad necesarias para lograr la postura, sino la confianza en un nivel más personal y espiritual; reconfirmando la seguridad en sí mismo como individuo.

Aparte de los beneficios asombrosos a nivel de salud que la práctica tiene que ofrecer, el Yoga también permite tranquilizar la mente y lograr una mejor concentración; no sólo en la clase de Yoga sino también en la vida cotidiana. Especialmente lo observo en alumnos principiantes, en su lucha por enfocarse durante las primeras sesiones de Yoga, ya que su mente y su cuerpo aun no están entrenados para mantenerse consciente de su respiración, de la alineación del cuerpo y de enfocar la mente al mismo tiempo. Generalmente, la mayoría de las personas son absorbidas por lo que me refiero como el “estado de supervivencia”, un estilo de vida acelerado que raramente nos da tiempo para la reflexión y la observación. La belleza del Yoga es que, mientras está en la clase, usted descubre como conectar mente, respiración y cuerpo, lo que a su vez le permitirá calmar su mente, aumentar su estado de relajación y conectarse con su interior o su “yo verdadero”.

Al terminar de dar la clase de Yoga, a menudo les pido a los estudiantes que observen el efecto de la práctica en ellos. Los resultados más comunes son sensación de paz, mente más clara y desintoxicación.

Hay Yoga para todos, hay diferentes estilos para todo tipo de personalidades; si busca una clase energética le sugiero tomar una clase de Vinyasa Yoga o una Clase de Rocket Yoga, o si busca un ritmo más lento le sugiero tomar una clase Hatha Yoga o Dharma Yoga, solo para mencionar un par de estilos; sin embargo, hay muchísimas otras opciones para cada persona.

Desde que comencé mi práctica de Yoga hace 9 años, he tenido diferentes maestros quienes me han inspirado en el camino, y eso es lo que me ha mantenido practicando actualmente con ellos. Después de probar distintos estilos de Yoga y diferentes maestros, usted encontrará el estilo de Yoga que más le conviene según sus necesidades y el maestro de Yoga con el que usted pueda sentirse inspirado y conectado.

Los invito a experimentar la práctica de Yoga y acuérdese que existe Yoga para todos incluyendo a los niños, los adultos, las personas mayores, prenatal y también para mascotas!

he National Scholastic Championship 2012 took place last march 10th and 11th in Irving, Texas. This is the first of the 3 main tournaments USA Judo has planned for this year.

Over 400 young athletes from around the country had the opportunity to compete in high level matches, which allowed them to advance on their preparation to achieve better positions in future championships both on the national and international arena.

Among the most outstanding athletes of the event are Steve Perez and Adonis Peña, who train at Budokan Judo Club of Miami. This club, founded in 1990 by Sensei Evelio Garcia, has been a breeding ground for great stars in the U.S. Judo history. On the outstanding performance of their athletes in the recent championship, Mr. Garcia tells us that “they started very young with us, especially Adonis who began practicing at age 6 and now at 15 competes in two categories.” With 7 athletes participating in the championship, having brought home 5 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals is an outstanding balance for this training center.

Sensei Evelio García, Black Belt 5th Dan, has over 30 years in the practice of Judo. He started in the sport at an early age and has devoted his life to teaching children and youth and “turning them into Olympians. Three of my students have participated in the Olympics: Rene Capó (87), Orlando Fuentes (96) and Lauren Meece (2000). Also several Pan American champions and World Judo Championship team members were from our club“.

His son and grandson also practice Judo, three generations united by the sport: “My son started at 4 years old and participated in the World Youth Championship ‘94 in Egypt. For me it is a great pride to see my son and my grandson now 6 years doing judo. I hope to have more years of life to bring more kids to the Olympics”. Even though Mr. Garcia was not Olympian athlete himself, he had the honor of being an Olympic Coach for TEAM USA in 2000.

Budokan Judo Club currently has among their students 12 U.S. Youth National Champions, two of them (Adonis Diaz and Steve Perez) ranked among the Seniors. In addition, other athletes who excelled in the recent National Scholastic Championship were Victor Castellanos and Sergio Aguilar. They are 10 and 11 years and began to practice at Budokan at 4 years old. Seeing them succeed is a matter of pride for all the coaching staff of the club.

However, Sensei Garcia stresses that parental

support is fundamental to the success of these children in competitions at such a young age, “if they do not have 100% parental support, in an amateur sport like judo, it would take a lot of work to get the child where they want to go. Counting on his parents is paramount for a child to reach Olympic, Pan American or World Championship teams’ level.”

At Budokan Judo Club, Eduardo Novoa and Daniel Jasper along with Sensei Garcia are in charge of training the athletes. Being for over 25 years in the same location in Hialeah, this Judo Training Center is a reference for many parents who want their kids to practice judo at a competitive level. Part of the hard training method there includes physical fitness and

many judo practice hours, from 5 to 6 times a week.

To go a long way an athlete has to work hard and be consistent. It includes “a lot of fitness and a lot of judo.”

Several of the athletes in the center are on a good

pace to get a spot on Team USA in Rio 2016. Besides Adonis and Steve, there are “Brian Abreu, Victor Castellanos, Sergio Aguilar, Zachiaro Puchinsky and Maikolo Puchinsky that “ are kids who have very good conditions and I hope in the future become part of an Olympic team. As a coach, you always do your best to teach them. It is on their side to keep working hard and also have a commitment from their family to support their endeavor”. This is especially critical when they reach adolescence and begin to take interest in exploring options. “Both parents and coaches have to talk much with the athletes and keep them enthusiastic on their Judo practice and goals.”

However, the athlete who is competitive material can be spotted since childhood, “they have the guts for judo, for competition. As a high contact physical sport, not all children are up to that. The athlete mainly has to be very positive.

They surprise you. There are little ones competing and not winning but when they reach 12 or 14 years old achieve a remarkable physical change and you see them succeed in the sport.” And this applies to girls as well whom Mr. Garcia believes “can be more settled in tournaments than boys; when a girl focus on a goal is determined to reach it and does it faster than a boy. Girls are more persistent”. The best example is Lauren Meece, who started at age 4 and at 16 was the youngest athlete in the Olympic team.

Breeding ground for champions, the Budokan Judo Club and Sensei Evelio Garcia are mandatory reference for highly competitive Judo in the USA. As Mr. Jose Humberto Rodriguez, USA Judo CEO states “the Budokan Judo Club has always been one of the pillars of the success for Olympic Judo in Miami. Sensei Garcia has served as a coach, father, brother and friend to countless athletes. There are many who think Judo community in South Florida is divided, and it is true, there is much rivalry, but I am a believer that on this rivalry is where the key to success resides for everybody. Therefore I congratulate and respect the work done by teachers like Evelio and his club team”.

Con 7 atletas participantes en el campeonato, haber traído a casa 5 medallas de oro, 2 de plata y 2 de bronce constituye un balance extraordinario para este centro.

El Sensei Evelio García, Cinturón Negro 5to. Dan, lleva más de 30 años en la práctica del Judo. Comenzó en el deporte a muy temprana edad y ha dedicado su vida a enseñar niños y jóvenes hasta “convertirlos en Olímpicos. Tres de mis alumnos han participado en las Olimpiadas: Rene Capó (87), Orlando Fuentes (96)y Lauren Meece (2000). También varios campeones panamericanos y miembros del equipo mundial de Judo han salido de aquí”. Su hijo y su nieto también practican Judo, Tres generaciones unidas por el deporte: “Mi hijo comenzó a los 4 años y participó en el mundial juvenil de Egipto ’94. Para mi es un orgullo muy grande ver a mi hijo y ahora a mi nieto de 6 años en el judo. Espero durar unos cuantos años mas para llevar mas muchachos a las Olimpíadas”.

Si bien el Sr. García no fue atleta Olímpico, tuvo el honor de ser entrenador del equipo Olímpico para los Juegos del 2000.

Actualmente el Budokan Judo Club tiene 12 Campeones Nacionales Juveniles de E.E.U.U., dos de ellos (Adonis Dias y Steve Perez) rankeados entre los Seniors. Además, otros atletas que se destacaron en el reciente Campeonato Nacional Juvenil fueron Víctor Castellanos y Sergio Aguilar. Ellos tienen 10 y 11 años y comenzaron a practicar con en Budokan desde los 4 años. Verlos triunfar es motivo de orgullo para todo el equipo de entrenadores del Club.

Destaca sin embargo Sensei Garcia que el apoyo de los padres es parte fundamental del éxito de estos jóvenes a tan temprana edad: “si ellos no tienen un 100% de apoyo de los padres, en un deporte como el judo que es un deporte amateur, les costaría mucho trabajo llegar a donde quieren y deben llegar. El apoyo familiar es lo principal para llegar a una Olimpíada, un equipo panamericano o mundial”.

En Budokan Judo Club también apoyan el entrenamiento los profesores Eduardo Novoa y Daniel Jaspe. Al estar ubicado por más de 25 años en el mismo local en Hialeah, este centro de Judo es referencia para muchos padres que desean que sus hijos practiquen seriamente el deporte. Parte del fuerte entrenamiento que allí se dicta incluye acondicionamiento físico y mucha practica 5 a 6 veces por semana. Para llegar lejos hay que trabajar duro y con constancia. “Mucha condición física y mucho judo”.

Varios de los atletas del centro van a buen paso para poder llegar a representar a E.E.U.U. en Rio 2016. Ademas de Adonis y Steve, están “Brian Abreu, Victor Castellanos, Sergio Aguilar, Zachiaro Puchinsky y Maikolo Puchinsky que “son muchachos que tienen muy buenas condiciones y espero en un futuro que formen parte de un equipo olímpico. Como entrenadores, ponemos nuestra parte para enseñarlos. Ellos tienen que seguir trabajando duro y contar también con el compromiso de la familia de apoyarlos”. Esto sobre todo es fundamental cuando llegan a la adolescencia y comienzan a tomar interés en explorar opciones. “Tanto los padres como uno como profesor tenemos que hablar mucho con los muchachos y mantenerlos entusiasmados con el Judo.”

Sin embargo el atleta que es material de competencia nace con la condición y eso se aprecia desde pequeño, “la entraña para el judo, para la competencia.

Como es un deporte físico todos los niños no están para eso; principalmente tiene que ser muy positivo. Hay muchos que lo sorprenden a uno. Que cuando son pequeñitos están compitiendo y no ganan pero cuando llegan entre los 12 o 14 años dan un cambio físico extraordinario y usted los ve triunfando en el deporte”. Y esto aplica para niños y niñas, a quienes el sr. Garcia considera “son mas asentadas en los torneos que los varones, cuando una niña quiere una cosa es mas determinada y lo logra mas rápido que un varón. Son mas persistentes”. Para ejemplo un botón: Lauren Meece, quien comenzó a los 4 años y a los 16 era la atleta mas joven del equipo olímpico.

Semillero de triunfadores, Budokan Judo Club y el Sensei Evelio Garcia son referencia obligada del Judo de alta competencia de los E.E.U.U. como corrobora el Sr. José Humberto Rodríguez, CEO de USA Judo, al afirmar que “el Club Budokan, ha sido siempre uno de los pilares del éxito del Judo Olímpico en Miami. Sensei Garcia ha servido como coach, padre, hermano y amigo para un sinnúmero de atletas. Hay muchos que piensan que la comunidad del Judo en el Sur de la Florida está dividida, y es verdad que existe mucha rivalidad, pero soy muy creyente que en esa rivalidad es donde se encuentra la clave del éxito de todos y para todos. Es por eso que felicito y siempre respeto el trabajo y labor que hacen maestros como Evelio y su club.”

l pasado 10 y 11 de Marzo tuvo lugar en Irving, Texas el Campeonato Nacional Juvenil 2012, el primero de los tres grandes campeonatos programados por USA Judo para este año, donde mas de 400 atletas jóvenes de todo el país tuvieron la oportunidad de competir en combates de alta calidad que les permiten avanzar en su preparación para lograr avanzadas posiciones en el futuro.

Entre los atletas mas destacados del evento se encuentran Steve Perez y Adonis Peña, quienes entrenan en Budokan Judo Club de Miami. Este club, fundado en 1990 por el Sensei Evelio García, ha sido semillero de grandes estrellas del Judo de E.E.U.U. Sobre la sobresaliente actuación de sus pupilos

Miami Herald breaks ground at site of new Doral home

I

n a symbolic gesture that signals the start of a move from Biscayne Bay to Doral, Miami Herald officials and local dignitaries on Thursday held a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of the media company’s new home.

The Miami Herald Media Co. — which also encompasses Miami.com, MiamiHerald.com, el Nuevo Herald and HCP/ Aboard custom publishing — will move into a 15-acre site at 3511 NW 91st Ave. by May 2013.

“Needless to say, we are very, very excited to be embarking on this new era for The Miami Herald Media Co.,” said David Landsberg, the company’s president and publisher.

He said the new site will offer a “modern, state-of-theart printing plant” and offices that “suits a modern media company.”

The company’s news and business division will move into an existing two-story, 158,000-squarefoot facility that used to house the U.S. Southern Command building.

Thursday’s groundbreaking was for the construction of a three-story, 119,000-squarefoot industrial plant that will house the printing presses.

“I’m very proud that one of the oldest institutions of South Florida has decided to make Doral their home,” said Doral Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez. He added that even as politicians often disagree with reports published in both newspapers, “I think that a free and independent press is critical to a democracy.”

On March 20, 2012 the DocMiami International Film Festival held its annual poster unveiling event at Las Vegas Cuban Cuisine in Doral located at 11500 NW 41st Street where special invited guests enjoyed a dinner and cocktail celebration. DocMiami Executive Director, Monica Rosales and new DocMiami Awards Gala host, Jenny Scordamaglia of Miami TV had the honor of unveiling the 2012 Official DocMiami poster created by British artist, David Caines who joined guests via live video feed from London.

Distinguished guests present at the unveiling included: Chairperson of the Doral Cultural Affairs Advisory Board, Carmen Johnson as well as former City of Doral Vice Mayor, Robert VanName, Representative of Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Harriet Carter and Carlos Zambrano of Zambrano Entertainment as well as other welcomed guests.

The 2012 edition of the film festival will take place December 7-9th. The DocMiami International Film Festival included over 80 documentary films from all over the world during the 2011 cultural festivities which took place at Millennia Atlantic University and at the world famous Doral Golf Resort and Spa. The Awards Gala will take place the evening of December 9th and will also include performances by Tito Puente, Jr, spoken word poet Rich Ferguson, Bo Blount and additional musicians to be announced in the coming months.
