Doral Trolley keeps on growing and improving In addition to a third route, new technologies are integrated into the system, seeking to efficiently serve the residents of Doral.

n Wednesday February 8th, at the Council Meeting, Mr. Eric Carpenter, City of Doral Public Works Director, presented the Doral Transit System Annual Performance Report.

Among the different subjects presented, the most important were the addition of a new route and new technologies for optimal service. We wanted to extend this information to our readers, so we asked several question to Mr. Carpenter; he kindly answered all of them and we are immensely grateful. Here is the interview:

1) The Trolley has become a necessity for many families with teenagers who have to go to school, after school activities and move freely to parks and shops. Early in the morning we can see many people heading to work using the Trolley. There are critical hours where you need more than a unit, are you planning to add units to these critical hours?

“The City currently has three Trolleys servicing Route 1 during peak hours this is up from only one Trolley three years ago. We will continue to monitor the ridership and if the need for additional service grows we will do what we can to meet that need.”

2) What was the criteria for adding a third route?

What does the new route cover?

“The new route is a Pilot Program to provide connection between the residential areas of Doral and the Metrorail system that provides regional transportation.”

3) The system has been having technological improvements, such as cameras, tracking systems, counters for passengers, and a system called “Interactive Voice Response”. Could you explain the benefits of these advances?

“These advances allow us to receive information faster, respond faster to issues and provide better service to the community. The Interactive Voice Response system also allows us to provide that service more efficiently as the more than 20,000 calls per month would overwhelm our standard phone system and we would either have to spend more funds to hire additional staff or provide a lower standard of service.”

4) Would share your statistics? Number of passengers, % of efficiency, etc.

“The most important statistics to me are the goals of riders per hour which we are seeing in excess of 15 per hour on Route 1 and we are nearing our goal of 10 riders per hour on Route 2. The total report for last year including all statistics is available on the City website under the agenda from the last City Council meeting.”

5) The Trolley does so much for the people of Doral, which seems to have no detractors, however people are talking about the cost of this service to the city.

Are there any plans to charge a fare?

“The idea of cost recovery through charging fares is somewhat misleading as typically fare revenues only cover 25-35% of the cost of service.

Historically significant fare increases have reduced ridership at the same time. The goal of the service is provide transportation options to the community while helping reduce traffic congestion and helping the environment by reducing vehicle emissions. As a result, reducing ridership would be counterproductive to these goals.”

6) Will there be more routes?

“At this time we have no plans for more routes but we are ready and willing to respond if a need arises.”

7) Many expect the “Trolley Express” again; it is possible to have it back?

“The Express was a special event held at different times throughout the year. I would expect that these events will come back from time to time in the future.”

8) Do you have any comments to add? Any message to the Doral community?

“I am very grateful for all the support that the community has shown for the Trolley and the patience that they have extended to us as we go through some growing pains. If you have tried riding the Trolley I thank you and if not I encourage you to give it a try”.

“Las estadísticas más importantes para mí son el numero de pasajeros por hora, estamos viendo en más de 15 pasajeros por hora en la Ruta 1 y nos estamos acercando a nuestro objetivo de 10 pasajeros por

“La idea de la recuperación de costos mediante las tarifas de carga es un tanto engañoso, ya que normalmente los ingresos sólo cubren el 25-35% del coste del servicio. Aumentos de tarifas históricamente significativas han reducido número de usuarios al mismo tiempo.

El objetivo del servicio es ofrecer opciones de transporte a la comunidad al tiempo que ayuda a reducir la congestión del tráfico y ayudar al medio ambiente mediante la reducción de emisiones de los vehículos. Como resultado, la reducción de pasajeros sería contraproducente para estos objetivos.”

6) ¿Habrá más rutas?

“En este momento no tenemos planes para más rutas, pero estamos listos y dispuestos a responder en caso de que surja la necesidad.”

7) Muchos esperan que el “Trolley Express” una vez más, es posible que volvamos a tener este servicio?

El “Trolley Express” esta orientado a un evento especial que tiene lugar en distintos momentos durante todo el año. Yo esperaría a que estos eventos se vuelvan a realizar de vez en cuando en el futuro.”

8) Algún comentario o mensaje a la comunidad de Doral que quiera añadir?

“Estoy muy agradecido por todo el apoyo que la comunidad ha demostrado para el tranvía (Trolley) y la paciencia que nos han brindado a medida que avanzamos a través de algunos inconvenientes de crecimiento. Si usted ha intentado viajar en el trolley, le doy las gracias y si no me animo a recomendarle que lo haga”.

n February 8th, the same day of the 102nd anniversary of the Boys Scouts of America, Boy Scout Francisco Gamez received a Certificate of Appreciation and Achievement from the City of Doral. Francisco was honored for his “DETERIORATED U.S FLAG DISPONSAL UNIT” project, an exemplary work of good citizenship and respect for our national symbols.

The project has been installed at the Veteran’s Park (10201 NW 33rd).

The 1.2-acres park includes a Veteran’s memorial, a playground and a field for recreational use. Francisco Gamez organized, led and managed the complete plan. The objective is to offer all neighbors a place to dispose their deteriorated US flags, maintaining a very high respect for this precious symbol.

The work includes informational signs at the park and a brief explanation of the importance of this display of patriotism.

Two years ago, Francisco Gamez was introduced by Councilman Van Name and presented his project to the Council as a requirement for the Eagle Scout rank, the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scout’s program of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA).

Francisco Gamez is a senior student of Ronald Reagan Doral Senior High and belongs to the troop 552 of Doral.

E

n febrero 8th, en el 102 Aniversario de los Boys Scouts of America, BS Francisco Gamez recibió un Certificado de Apreciación y logros por este proyecto.

Hace dos años, en aquel entonces el concejal Robert Van Name presentó al Consejo de la ciudad, el proyecto de Francisco Gamez, como requerimiento para optar por el grado de Eagle Scout, el máximo grado posible en el programa de los Boys Scouts de America. Hoy el proyecto ha sido instalado en el Parque de los Veteranos ubicado en 10211 NW 33 calle, y ha sido adecuado para poder informar efectivamente a la comunidad acerca de la importancia y el respeto a la bandera Americana.

Se busca dar la posibilidad de disponer las banderas desteñidas o en mal estado en una unidad situada en el parque. Un proyecto ciudadano y ejemplar que mereció el aplauso de todos los miembros del Consejo, así como administradores de la ciudad.

Francisco Gamez es estudiante de Ronald Reagan Doral Senior High School y pertenece a la tropa 552 del Doral.

Students leaving a Trail Ronald Reagan Doral Senior High has 3 finalists for The Miami Herald Silver Knight Awards, one of the nation’s most highly regarded student awards programs.

T

he Miami Herald Silver Knight Awards is one of the nation’s most highly regarded student awards programs. The purpose of this Awards program is to recognize outstanding students who have not only maintained good grades but have also unselfishly applied their special knowledge and talents to contribute significant service to their schools and communities. The Silver Knight Awards program was instituted at The Miami Herald in 1959 by John S. Knight, past publisher of The Miami Herald, founder and editor

emeritus of Knight-Ridder Newspapers and 1968 Pulitzer Prize winner.

The program is open to high school seniors with a minimum 3.2 GPA (unweighted) in public, private, and parochial schools in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Students may be nominated in 15 categories: Art, Athletics, Business, Drama, English & Literature, Foreign Language, General Scholarship, Journalism, Mathematics, Music, New Media, Science, Social Science, Speech, and Vocational-Technical. 1) What is Silver Night Award for you? What do you feel for being a candidate of this important award?

I am very grateful to Ms. Espinosa for considering me a deserving recipient of this nomination. The Silver Knight Award is a very prestigious recognition given to students who make a positive impact in their communities and who maintain high academic standards at the same time. I am honored and very proud to have this opportunity to represent my school.

2) What did you do to be selected?

I have been working to find a cure for cancer since I was seven years old. Raising awareness and fundraising for research is part of what I do.

I am a member of the Doral Relay for Life steering committee, also a Team Captain. During all these years, together with my team, “The White Doves”, I have been able to deliver around $100,000 to the American Cancer Society.

My work has always been behind the scenes, grass roots, door to door, one person at a time. My contribution has also been as an active participant of American Cancer Society - Cancer Action Network, the legislative affiliate to the society. We work to make sure finding the cure for cancer becomes a national priority. This effort is what makes legislators keep those funds coming to support our cause. I am satisfied with my role in this fight. It is a very personal fight; cancer has touched the last three generations of my family including losing my father to cancer when I was four. My most recent encounter with this illness was last year, when my mother had to fight breast cancer. Yes, it is personal.

3) Would you want to share your plans for the future? Did you have chosen a career yet? A college?

I have not yet selected a College to attend, but I do believe I will study medicine; research or any discipline that will help us rid the world of this devastating disease. Many of my family members are in the medical field and I want to position myself where I can actively make strides against cancer. Working to support and strengthen the American Cancer Society has given me the pleasure of knowing that we have effectively made an

4) There is somebody that you can say you admire him/her.

Yes, I admire my mom profoundly. She is a very strong and determined person who has been able to face adversity over and over again without ever giving up. She is passionate about everything she does, and she puts her heart and soul into every project, mission or crusade she takes on. I also admire her generosity and her selflessness. She is always concerned with what is best for everyone concerned, always thinking about others rather than herself. I am very lucky to have her in my life and so is everyone who gets to know her.

5) Do you have any message for the community?

My mom taught me that we are not individuals in a bubble, that we are part of something bigger than ourselves. If we want to live happy and secure, we must become active members of our community, improve it, and make it a better place to live.

Being nominated for the Silver Knight is a great honor for me. Having grown up with a sister who was a recipient of this award I have always had a self-imposed goal of living up to the name she made for herself, therefore it is a great feeling to be nominated for this award because I feel that it is the first step towards achieving this goal.

2) What did you do to be selected?

Aside from the basic award criteria, such as having a minimum 3.0 GPA and being in good standing within your school and community, as the nominee from my school in the category of Social Sciences I have to show community involvement and impact within the field of government, civil service, and student government.

Estoy muy agradecido a la Sra. Espinosa, por considerarme merecedora de este nombramiento. El Premio Silver Knight es un reconocimiento muy prestigioso otorgado a los estudiantes que tienen un impacto positivo en sus comunidades y que mantienen un alto nivel académico, al mismo tiempo.

Me siento honrada y muy orgullosa de tener esta oportunidad de representar a mi escuela.

2)Por qué fuiste seleccionada?

He estado trabajando para encontrar una cura para el cáncer desde que tenía siete años de edad. Busco crea conciencia y trabajo en recaudación de fondos. Durante todos estos años, junto con mi equipo “The White Doves”, que he sido capaz de entregar alrededor de $ 100.000 a la Sociedad Americana del Cáncer.

Mi trabajo siempre ha sido silencioso y personal de puerta a puerta, una persona a la vez. 5) Do you have any message for the community?

My message would be directed towards youth in Doral and that message would be to find a cause that you care about and that interests you and to delve yourself into it and become fully involved in it, because only then will you actually be able to make an impact within your community. Volunteering with the city at special events or community service events is great, but the way to have a serious and long-lasting impact in your community and help make people’s lives better is to fully involve yourself in one specific field. More than anything, you have to do something that you like in order to be happy doing it.

4) There is somebody that you can say you admire him/her.

There are several people that have served as role-models and have inspired me to get so involved within my community. Among them are both my parents, Julio and Alejandra Moreno, who have sacrificed so much not only for me and my sister but also to help Doral’s youth get civicly involved within the realm of Scouting, also included there is community member Carlos Ortiz, who as my Scoutmaster for many years taught me a great deal about the importance of being an involved member of your community along with many priceless life lessons about morality and ethics. Finally, I would have to say that both my sister, Cristina Moreno, and my grandfather, Mariano Marquez, have inspired me due to their tireless work to always continue to help the Doral community in anyway they can.

3) Would you want to share your plans for the future? Did you have chosen a career yet? A college?

For the future I know for a fact that I want to study political sciences, possibly also focusing within the real of journalism, before one day going on to study law. I would very much like to work as a lawyer while continuing my work within the community. Who knows, maybe one day I could even run for elected office within our city.

Education | Educación 3) ¿Te gustaría compartir sus planes para el futuro?

Todavía no he elegido una universidad para asistir, pero creo que voy a estudiar medicina, la investigación o de cualquier disciplina que nos ayude a librar al mundo de esta enfermedad devastadora.

Muchos de los miembros de mi familia están en el campo de la medicina y quisiera estar en la misma posición para lograr avances en la lucha contra el cáncer. American Cancer Society me ha enseñado que efectivamente hemos hecho un impacto en la investigación, prevención, educación y detección temprana. Quiero seguir en eso.

4) Quien ha sido tu inspiración?

Yo admiro a mi madre profundamente. Ella es una persona muy fuerte y decidida que ha sido capaz de enfrentarse a la adversidad una y otra vez sin nunca darse por vencida. Ella es una apasionada de todo lo que hace, y ella pone su corazón y alma en cada proyecto, la misión o cruzada que lleva adelante. También admiro su generosidad y su altruismo. Ella siempre está preocupada por lo que es mejor para todos, siempre pensando en los demás más que a sí misma. Me siento muy afortunada de tenerla en mi vida y así es todo aquel que llega a conocerla.

5) ¿Tienes algún mensaje para la comunidad?

Mi mamá me enseñó que no somos individuos en una burbuja, que somos parte de algo más grande que nosotros mismos. Si queremos vivir felices y seguros, que deben convertirse en miembros activos de nuestra comunidad, mejorarlo y hacerlo un lugar mejor para vivir.

Alejandro Moreno

Presidente de Clases 2012 de RRDSH 1) ¿Que significa ese premio para ti y en que consiste?

Ser nominado por el Silver Knight un gran honor para mí. Después de haber crecido con una hermana que fue ganadora ya de este premio siempre he tenido una meta auto-impuesta de vivir hasta el nombre que ella hizo por sí misma, por lo tanto es una gran sensación de ser nominado para este premio , porque me parece que es el primer paso hacia la consecución de este objetivo.

2) ¿Cuáles son los requerimientos de selección?

Aparte de los criterios de adjudicación básicos, tales como tener un promedio mínimo de 3.0 y estar en buena posición dentro de su escuela y la comunidad, como el candidato de mi escuela en la categoría de Ciencias Sociales que tengo para mostrar la participación comunitaria y el impacto en el ámbito del gobierno , el servicio civil y el gobierno estudiantil.

3) ¿Le gustaría compartir sus planes para el futuro?

Para el futuro, sé que es un hecho de que quiero estudiar ciencias políticas, posiblemente también del periodismo, antes de ir a estudiar derecho. Me gustaría mucho trabajar como abogado al mismo tiempo continuar con mi trabajo dentro de la comunidad. Quién sabe, quizás algún día podría incluso postularse para cargos de elección popular dentro de nuestra ciudad.

4) ¿Quién ha sido tu modelo a seguir?

Hay varias personas que han servido como modelos a imitar, y me han inspirado para estar tan involucrados dentro de mi comunidad. Entre ellos se encuentran tanto mis padres, Julio y Moreno Alejandra, que han sacrificado tanto, no sólo para mí y mi hermana, sino también para ayudar a los jóvenes de Doral involucrados en el ámbito del Movimiento Scout. También incluyo a Carlos Ortiz, quien como mi maestro Scout durante muchos años, me ha enseñado mucho acerca de la importancia de ser un miembro activo de su comunidad, junto con muchas lecciones de vida valiosas acerca de la moralidad y la ética. Por último, habría que decir que tanto mi hermana, Cristina Moreno, y mi abuelo, Mariano Márquez, me han inspirado por su trabajo incansable para seguir siempre para ayudar a la comunidad de Doral en cualquier forma que pueda.

5) ¿Tienes algún mensaje para la comunidad?

Mi mensaje se dirige hacia la juventud en Doral y sería que busquen una causa que les importe y que les interese a si mismos , para luego involucrarse totalmente en ella. Esa es la forma de hacer un impacto dentro de su comunidad. Es importante ser voluntario con la ciudad en eventos especiales o eventos de servicio a la comunidad, pero también es recomendable involucrar a otras personas para que hagan lo mismo . Esa es la manera de tener un impacto importante y duradero en su comunidad y ayudar a hacer vida de la gente mas llevadera. Más que nada, que tienes que hacer algo que te gusta para que seas feliz haciéndolo.

We talked to Ms.. Bibiana Salmon, Board Member (Treasurer) to the City of Doral “Parks and Police for Kids Foundation” and she said: “We are very grateful for this donation from the PGA Tour because we need funds to continue our programs.

Together with the Doral Police and the Doral Parks Department, we organize and sponsor events that benefit children. Among our most significant, we annually assist with the Police Explorer’s Program, the Thanksgiving Food Drive, the Christmas “Shop with a Cop” Event and with the Elementary and Middle School Field Days.

We also sponsored an afterschool program at Doral Middle School. This afterschool program is currently being implemented at Eugenia B. Thomas K-8.

The afterschool program involves mainly three aspects: Academics, Sports and Mentoring, which helps children, develop coping skills in and outside of school. Emphasis is made in neutralizing negative influences and peer pressure.”

The event is scheduled for Wed, Mar 7, 2012 - Sun, Mar 11, 2012 at Doral Golf Resort and Spa.

n Wednesday, February 22nd Mayor of Doral Juan Carlos Bermudez traveled to Tallahassee to take part of the “Mayors Means Businesses” Summit.

The Summit organized by the Florida League of Mayors highlighted the important role cities have in economic development and jobs creation.

Mayor Bermudez, along with other Mayors from across the State, partnered with key business leaders to deliver a collective message of how business growth and investment starts at the local level. In addition to Governor Rick Scott, Speaker of the House Dean Cannon and Senate President Mike Haridopolos attended.

Creating Citizenship Awareness Program “Parks and Police 4 Kids”

he “Parks and Police 4 Kids” Foundation was created in 2007 in order to provide children and youth in Doral with the opportunities to “have a direct dialogue with the police, where they could express concerns, ask questions and share sports together. It is a mentoring program. ” So it is explained by Officer Noel Feliciano, who puts all his enthusiasm, love and dedication to materialize this and several other programs that bring the City of Doral Police Department closer to the community.

This particular program involves children from the community between 13 and 15 years of age, who are in 6th, 7th and 8th grades in several schools in Doral. Those students are selected for their academic effort and recommended by their teachers, giving those participants a valuable opportunity to learn and engage with their community.

Some of the activities they enjoy within the program include trips to various attractions within the county, such as the Miami Zoo, Seaquarium, etc. and every Tuesday they get golf lessons at Doral Park. In addition to those enjoyable field trips, as part of the efforts to expose participants to different realities to which an individual may be faced when making wrong decisions, and to instill on them the awareness of social responsibility, “Parks and Police 4 Kids” students recently visited the Youth Correctional Center. In the words of Officer Feliciano, this field trip allowed the students to “see how the prison rehabilitation program helps adolescents who have had trouble with the law.”

The children who participated in the visit could see up close how hard it is for a youth to be detained in a prison. “Many were shocked because the guards were very strict. Discipline is paramount in the institution. At the end of the visit, students are able to appreciate the importance of freedom. In general, most said they were not going to get in trouble with the law to avoid being incarcerated in a detention center. “Parents, teachers and members of “Parks and Police 4 kids” who attended the tour also appreciated the opportunity to participate.

As a final message, Officer Feliciano said he would like high school students could visit the prison as well, “so they can appreciate what we do in the program and most importantly, become aware of the consequences of getting into trouble and failing to follow the rules.”

In these times, it is important to show young people the realities that surround them, so they can appreciate how privileged they are to have a loving and friendly environment, a clean and safe city, well-endowed schools, and teachers, parents and authorities dedicated to ensuring their welfare. By participating in programs like “Parks and Police 4 Kids”, Doral youth has an open door to this knowledge.

Creando Consciencia Ciudadana Programa “Parks and Police 4 Kids”

a Fundacion “Parks and Police 4 Kids” fue creada en el año 2007 con la finalidad de proporcionar a los niños y jóvenes de Doral las oportunidades para “tener un diálogo directo con la policía, donde ellos expresan inquietudes, hacen preguntas y comparten deportes juntos. Es un ‘mentoring program’.” Asi nos lo explica el Oficial Noel Feliciano, quien pone todo su entusiasmo y cariño en la realización de este y muchos otros programas que permiten acercar el Departamento de Policía de Doral a la comunidad.

En este programa participan niños de la comunidad entre los 13 y 15 años de edad que cursan 6to, 7mo y 8vo grado en las escuelas de Doral. Son seleccionados por su esfuerzo académico y recomendados por sus maestros. Los participantes tienen así una valiosa oportunidad de aprender e involucrarse con su comunidad.

Parte de las actividades que realizan incluyen paseos a varias atracciones dentro del condado, como son el Miami Zoo, el Seaquarium, etc. y todos los martes cuentan con una práctica de golf en el Doral Park. Adicionalmente, como parte de las actividades destinadas a exponer a los participantes y crearles consciencia de las diferentes realidades a las cuales un individuo puede llegar a enfrentarse cuando toma decisiones equivocadas, recientemente los estudiantes realizaron una visita al Centro Penitenciario Juvenil. En palabras del Oficial Feliciano, esta visita permitió a los estudiantes “ver como el programa del centro penitenciario rehabilita a adolescentes que han tenido problemas con la ley”.

Los muchachos que participaron en la visita pudieron ver de cerca la dura experiencia que implica para un joven estar detenido en un centro penitenciario. “Muchos quedaron en shock porque los guardias eran muy estrictos. La disciplina es lo primordial en la institución. Al final de la visita, los estudiantes aprecian lo que es la libertad. En general, la mayoría dijeron que no se van a meter en problema con la ley para no caer en un centro de detención”. Los padres, maestros y miembros de “Parks and Police 4 kids” que asistieron al paseo también agradecieron la oportunidad de participar Como mensaje final, el oficial Feliciano comentó que le gustaría que estudiantes de secundaria pudieran visitar el centro penitenciario también, “para que puedan apreciar lo que hacemos en el programa y lo más importante, tomen consciencia de las consecuencias de meterse en problemas y no respetar las leyes”.

En esta época es importante mostrar a los jóvenes las realidades que les rodean, de manera que puedan apreciar lo privilegiados que son al contar con un entorno amoroso y agradable, con una ciudad limpia y segura, con escuelas bien dotadas y con maestros, padres y autoridades dedicados a velar por su bienestar. Participando en programas como “Parks and Police 4 Kids” los jóvenes de Doral tienen una puerta abierta a ese conocimiento.

or almost a year now our publication has been contributing with USA Judo to educate the community on Judo and its practice in the United States. We have described the process of training Judo Olympic athletes; the physical and emotional strengths developed with the practice; how Olympic coaches and referees prepare to reach their goals and several other articles that have been published in our newspaper every two weeks both in English and Spanish. All these pieces have been enjoyed by our readers and also commented within the USA Olympic Judo community and today we are proud and also honored to share with our readers the recognition we have received for our hard work and support to USA Judo activities.

As of this month, USA Judo, the recognized National Governing Body for Judo by the United States Olympic Committee, has established a strategic alliance with Doral Family Journal to become an official outlet of information distribution related to that organization and its national Judo Team preparations for the Olympic Games in London this summer, and the Judo World Cup that will take place in Doral this upcoming May. urante casi un año nuestra publicación ha contribuido con USA Judo para permitir que el conocimiento sobre la práctica de Judo en los Estados Unidos esté a disposición de todos nuestros lectores y nuestra comunidad.

Hemos descrito el proceso de entrenamiento de los atletas olímpicos, las fortalezas físicas y emocionales

que se desarrollan con la práctica, el camino que siguen los entrenadores y los árbitros olímpicos para alcanzar sus metas y varios otros artículos que han sido publicados en nuestro periódico cada dos semanas, tanto en Inglés como Español. Todos los escritos han sido disfrutados por nuestros lectores y también han impactado positivamente a la comunidad del Judo Olímpico en el país; por ello hoy estamos orgullosos y honrados de compartir con nuestros lectores el reconocimiento que hemos recibido de nuestro arduo trabajo y apoyo a las actividades de USA Judo.

A partir de este mes USA Judo, el organismo nacional autorizado por el Comité Olímpico de Estados Unidos para coordinar la disciplina del Judo, estableció una alianza estratégica con Doral Family Journal para

a participacion masiva lograda el pasado 12 de febrero en las elecciones primarias realizadas en la ciudad de Miami, no cabe la menor duda que obedece al trabajo unitario desarrollado por los factores de la sociedad venezolana que hacen vida en el sur de la Florida, y donde el exilio jugo un papel determinante para la consolidacion de la misma. Atras quedaron las rencillas, rencores y posiciones recalcitrantes para dar paso a la tolerancia, armonia, puntos de equilibrio y acciones conjuntas. La impecable organizacion del dispositivo para las elecciones, no solo demostro la participacion armoniosa de voluntades que se suamaron para hacerlo posible, sino tambien de la donacion y ayudas financieras de personas que apuestan a un cambio dentro del pais.

El triunfo arrasador de Henrique Capriles Radonsky en la ciudad de Miami deja una clara lectura, que al igual que en Venezuela, la sociedad esta dispuesta a participar para lograr un cambio, pero bajo una vision moderada y para nada confrontativa. El discurso del ahora candidato presidencial de la unidad democratica, siempre ha sido de inclusion y evitando en todo

momento la confrontacion directa, estrategia que sin duda alguna le ha dado buenos resultados porque ha logrado captar la atencion y el apoyo de una buena parte de los electores venezolanos, que en su mayoria son jovenes.

Ahora todos somos Henrique Capriles Radonsky y tendremos que desarrollar e integrar todas las voluntades posibles para que logre el triunfo el proximo 7 de Octubre. El candidato es la unidad y el gran partido es Venezuela y nadie puede estar por encima, ni al margen de ella. Quienes tengan posiciones distintas deberan plantearlas para que sean escuchadas, porque en este punto donde nos encontramos, no cabe la menor duda de que todos somos importantes.

Por supuesto que no hay que llenarse de triunfalismos, que es una mala compania y seguir trabajando con el mismo fervor, y generando el mismo entusiasmo en la gente para haga suya la posibilidad real y cada dia mas cierta de derrotar a Hugo Chavez el proximo 7 de Octubre, claro esta preparandonos para todos los escenarios posibles, ya que estamos todos de acuerdo que Hugo Chavez no es un democrata, ni mucho menos un ciudadano honorable que pueda en un momento determinado reconocer su derrota.

Pero estamos seguros que el bravo pueblo de Venezuela y el liderazgo consolidado en la unidad democratica que representa Henrique Capriles estara a la altura del compromiso que la historia nos devenga, para el rescate del pais.

onald Reagan Doral Senior High hosted Lt. Jose Trigo and Officer Dosier, to speak on February 13th about the dangers that teens are facing and how to protect them. The presentation focused on three key aspects: Internet harassment (“cyber-bullying”), phone messages with sexual content (“sexting”) and dangerous Internet behavior. Three key issues that have something in common: the alarming ignorance of the parents.

We used to say that anything and everything can be said on paper; now we can say the same about the Internet; according to Lt. Jose Trigo, most of the problems begin there. The premise “No secret is safe in the Internet” is clear; now the problem is that younger people has access to this technology: we are talking about kids with access to the tools to communicate and publish anything to the world … without knowing the true scope of this…

A rather disturbing video showed the first subject: a true story in Ridgeview (Florida) where two senior students were threatening in each other on a chat; the next day at the school, one hits the other and accidentally killed him... Three years in prison (the victim’s mother asked for leniency for the offender), 18 year probation, two families destroyed and all of this, because no one made an effort to avert the tragedy (a lot of students knew about this fight). If parents have seen the conversation, if the witnesses had warned, if someone had done something... Officer Dosier insisted, “Please think before you act”.

Talking about Sexting, the danger is equally serious: personal information, compromising pictures, and even threats, are sent by text messages, unaware that the reputation, self-esteem and even someone’s life are being destroyed. Besides these messages, even when deleted can be recovered and constitute evidence to punish offenders, whom are labeled for life and worldwide as Sex Offenders. Again, “think before you send something”....

The third point complements the first two, the open exposure of all personal information leads to myriad of problems, easily avoidable if a strict control exists.

At the end of the presentation, the issue of drugs in the school was questioned. Addressing this concern, the PTSA has already scheduled a visit from Officer Gutierrez (MDCSP), who made a presentation last year on this subject that was published by DFJ. In anticipation to the new presentation and as a way of answering the question, we are including offi-

cer Gutierrez’s message: 1- RRDSH doesn’t have a serious drug problem; all verified cases represented less than 1%.

There are security cameras inside the school, police (even under covered), Youth Crime Watch, and highly trained security officers. School’s tolerance is 0%. On top of it, counselors and administrators are continually delivering informational programs and provide direct advice to anyone.

2- The drug problem exists in Doral, sadly the good financial situation of some of its residents makes it easy to purchase drugs. In addition, there are also many cases of “cabinet drugs” (parent’s prescriptions not properly safeguarded). The control must begin at home and

RECOMMENDATIONS: 1. Inform: know each and every one of the communication tools that your children have access to. Establish ground rules when you acquire these products.

2. Control: never allow aggressive, malicious or rude conversations online.

3. Authority: adolescent’s privacy is limited to the bathroom, parents should have access to all the products their children have access: computers, cell phones, social networks, etc.

Parents should be able to check backpacks, rooms and documents. Do not let your child hide anything.

4. Hierarchy: you are a father first, then a friend. Do not be an accomplice to your children’s mistakes. It’s not easy being a good parent, but it is an obligation to do your best.

Laziness should not exist, neither are excuses.

2- Control: no se puede permitir conversaciones agresivas, mal intencionadas o groseras por Internet.

3- Autoridad: la privacidad para los adolescentes se limita a la sala del baño, los padres deben tener acceso a todos los productos que manejan sus hijos: computadoras, celulares, redes sociales, etc. Los padres deben poder revisar mochilas, habitaciones y documentos. No se debe de esconder nada.

4- Jerarquía: uno es padre, después amigo. No seamos cómplices de los errores de nuestros hijos. No es fácil ser un buen padre, pero es una obligación tratar de serlo siempre. La desidia no debe de existir, las excusas tampoco.

Anticipándonos a la nueva presentación y como una forma de responder la pregunta, repetimos la palabras del Oficial Gutiérrez ese día: 1- RRDSH no tiene un problema grave de drogas, los casos no llegan al 1%/por año. Existen cámaras, policías (inclusive encubiertos), Youth Crime Watch, y encargados de seguridad fuertemente entrenados.

La tolerancia en la escuela es 0%. Además consejeros y administradores llevan continuamente a cabo programas informativos y dan asesoría directa.

2- El problema de drogas si existe pero dentro del Doral, tristemente el poder adquisitivo de sus residentes hace fácil comprarlas. Además hay muchos casos de drogas de botiquín (los padres las consumen por indicación medica y no las guardan correctamente). El control debe de comenzar por casa y sin excusas. Los padres deben ser parte activa de esta lucha y entender que reportar consumo y pedir ayuda, puede evitar daños mayores. La cero tolerancia con drogas y alcohol es obligatoria en casa también.

Jose Trigo y el Official Dosier, de City of Doral Police, visitaron el 13 de febrero a Ronald Reagan Doral Senior High para hablar sobre los peligros que enfrentan los adolescentes en la actualidad y como protegerlos .El punto se concentró en tres aspectos básicos: el acoso por Internet (“cyber-bullying”), mensajes de texto de connotación sexual (“sexting”) y los peligros que trae el mal uso de la Internet. Tres aspectos básicos que tienen una cosa en común: la alarmante ignorancia de los padres .

Decían que el papel aguanta todo, ahora podemos decir que Internet aguanta todo; según Lt José Trigo, la mayoría de los problemas nacen ahí. La premisa “No secret is safe in Internet” es clara; el problema es que el acceso a esta es permitido a personas cada vez mas jóvenes: hablamos de niños que tienen ya todas las herramientas posibles para comunicarse e informarle al mundo lo que sea … sin saber los verdaderos alcances de esto…

Un video bastante perturbador presenta el primer tema: una historia real en Ridgeview (Florida) en donde dos estudiantes de ultimo año se amenazan en un chat, al día siguiente y a la vista de todos, uno golpea al otro con tal mala suerte que la caída lo mata … Tres años de cárcel (la madre de la victima pidió clemencia para el agresor), 18 de libertad condicional, dos familias destruidas y todo por que nadie, sabiéndolo, hizo un esfuerzo para evitar la tragedia a pesar de que muchos de los estudiantes sabían de la pelea. Si los padres hubieran visto la conversación, si los testigos hubieran advertido, si alguien hubiera hecho algo… pero no lo hicieron.

Officer Dosier insistía “Por favor piense antes de actuar”.

he agriscience students at Doral Middle School competed in various leadership events and competitions.

Through these events the students have the opportunity to improve leadership strength and personal growth through public speaking.

The following students won 1st place at the District FFA Career Development Event and will now be competing at the FFA State level this June 2012 in Orlando Fl. The National FFA Organization (also known as Future Farmers of America) envisions a future in which all agricultural education students will discover their passion in life and build on that insight to chart the course for their educations, career and personal future.

Shelton Academy: At the Forefront…

ebruary may have been a short calendar month, but for the 5th grade students at Shelton, it wasn’t short on activities. For starters, the Student Government Association, along with the Parent-Teacher Organization, teamed up to organize an extremely successful Valentine’s fundraiser. The SGA’s Executive Council desired to sell sugar-free, healthy cookies as well as roses to its school family. After arranging the details and making the flyers themselves, the students set out to accomplish their goal. The SPTO obtained a supporter of the project who donated all the flowers, and a Shelton mom baked the chocolate chip and vanilla cookies!

After filling over 200 orders, the SGA prepared the flower arrangements and cookie bags and, to the delight of the students in the school, made Cupid’s deliveries on Valentine’s Day. In doing so, the SGA raised hundreds of dollars that will be used towards an endof-year party for all the kids at Shelton Academy. In the meantime, the council is already organizing its next big project, a “Spring Cleaning” clothing drive to benefit a local area shelter.

Furthermore, on Thursday, February 16th, Mr. David Lawrence, Jr., former publisher of The Miami Herald and a champion of early childhood education, visited the academy.

As the president of The Early Childhood Initiative Foundation and “UF University Scholar for Early Childhood Development and Readiness,” he leads The Children’s Movement of Florida. Thus, he is building an enduring, sustainable movement to make all children the state’s No. 1 priority in investment and decision-making. An accomplished trailblazer, his namesake school opened its doors in 2006.

Georgina Prats, owner of The Shelton Academy Schools, was elated to have someone as accomplished as Mr. Lawrence visit this institution. “He is so humble and so simple,” she remarked. “Even with such limited time, he takes the time to be readily available. Every minute of his life has a meaning and a purpose.”

As Mr. Lawrence visited the classrooms, interacted with the students, and experienced a day at the school, he marveled at the facilities and philosophy of learning at Shelton. “This is one of the best-looking schools I have ever seen,” he commented.

February was also Black History Month.

The students participated in several research projects about African-American achievement. The 5th grade class delved into the inspirational lives of Bill Cosby, Colin Powell, Michelle Obama, and Vivien Thomas, among others.

Sandra Bringas completed a project on Oprah Winfrey. She shared with her class why she was so excited to learn more about the talk show queen. Her insight was both profound and amusing.

Sandra remarked, “When I started watching her shows, I really felt proud of her even though I didn’t understand what was going on… I was 9 years old

and my mom would say, ‘Learn from her. She’s really smart.’ Then I started realizing how much she had helped people, families, and cities… Now we believe that all men are created equal and that if you have an Oreo cookie, you don’t only eat or like the white side or black, you eat and like both. It’s the same with humans. Now she’s rich and famous, but when she was young she didn’t even have a dress! I don’t think that

when she was young she ever imagined herself with the President.”

Sandra concluded, “I’m really proud because people never know their future. If you’re poor, don’t think that you don’t have a chance, because you can make a change in the world and even yourself.”

Lastly, the 5th grade class completed its 9-week drug resistance education course (DARE) with Officer Clyde Dozier of the Doral Police Department. A graduation ceremony to mark this stepping-stone is forthcoming.

E

arlier this year the local economy painted quite optimistic. It was expected that by mid-February 2012 the regular cycle of Doral markets had been stabilized, with a conservative positive trend. However, positive thinking and focus are not always enough to obtain financial success. Influential external factors will be very important in determining the economic situation of our city.

Tensions in the Middle East, particularly the escalating social and political crisis in Syria, one of the main paths for oil distribution on international markets, have caused a substantial increase in gasoline prices.

Many speculate that it may reach $ 5 a gallon, although we expect the federal government to take timely measures required to keep it within reasonable limits for consumers. In any case, the increase of fuel results in increased transportation costs and production, which gets to the consumer in progressive rise in the cost of food and services.

Another factor to consider is the number of layoffs in federal and private entities as a result of budget cuts.

These employees and their families, losing their income, immediately impact on the economic forecast. Focusing on the Doral area, the greatest impact is found in the business and commercial area east of the city, near the NW 79 Avenue, with the announcement of layoffs around 1000 employees on the Pepsi plant located in that area. There are administrative offices, customer service, bottling and distribution of product. This action is part of the downsizing and cost effective measures the company announced earlier this year and will affect 3% of its employees worldwide to strengthen the company and enhance shareholder dividends.

It is expected that this downsizing of one of the largest companies in the area would impact the surrounding businesses, especially restaurants, gas stations, etc.. Consequently, the chain reaction in the rest of the city may soon be felt, as many of these small and medium business owners in the area of Avenue 79 are residents of Doral.

The long awaited and celebrated arrival of the Miami Herald and Leon Medical Center to the City of Doral in the medium term will have a positive impact on the local economy by the number of employees and customers it would bring, but while we wait for these new neighbors, a short-term slowdown in economic progress of small and medium traders Doral will be seen for sure.

Belts would have to be kept tight, new investments should be well supported and a Plan B to generate revenues should be taken in consideration in order for businesses to generate enough revenues to survive the crisis. Minimization of wasteful spending to save money, to ‘save for a rainy day’, must be every business owner motto, in order to cover possible reductions on cash flow with those savings. It is very sad to see people losing their jobs and knowing that eventually it will affect an entire community.

The survivors of the crisis will be those capable of adapting to the situation and needs of customers, to run ahead, anticipate and be able to offer goods and services for which competition has neither the capacity nor the infrastructure.

Positive thinking is not enough, but it is the basis for innovation.

And that is what will help businesses to stay afloat during this difficult time.

Las muy esperadas y celebradas llegadas del Miami Herald y León Medical Center a la Ciudad de Doral a mediano plazo tendrán un impacto muy positivo en la economía local, por el volumen de empleados y clientes que traen consigo; pero mientras esperamos estos nuevos vecinos, a corto plazo se visualiza una desaceleración en el progreso económico de los pequeños y medianos negociantes de Doral.

Hay que seguir apretándose el cinturón. Considerar inversiones, tener un plan B para generar ingresos que permitan sobrevivir a la crisis; minimizar gastos superfluos para ahorrar dinero, de manera de ‘guardar para las vacas flacas’ y cubrir eventuales fallas de flujo de caja con esos ahorros. Es muy triste ver personas perder su empleo y saber que a la larga esto afecta a una comunidad entera.

Los supervivientes de la crisis serán aquellos que se adapten a la situación y necesidades de los clientes, los que corran adelante, se anticipen y sean capaces de ofrecer bienes y servicios para los cuales la competencia no tenga ni la capacidad ni la infraestructura.

El pensamiento positivo no basta, pero es la base de la innovación.

Y eso si ayudará a los negocios a salir a flote en el tiempo difícil.

principios de año la economía local pintaba bastante optimista. Se esperaba que para mediados de febrero 2012 el ciclo regular del mercado de Doral se hubiera estabilizado, con tendencia conservadoramente positiva. Sin embargo, el pensamiento positivo y la focalización no siempre son suficientes para materializar la prosperidad. Hay factores externos muy importantes cuya influencia será determinante en la situación económica de nuestra Ciudad.

Las tensiones en el Medio Oriente, en particular la escalada en la crisis social y política en Siria, una de las puertas de entrada para la distribución del petróleo en el mercado, han ocasionado el incremento sustancial en los precios de la gasolina.

Muchos especulan que puede llegar a $5 por galón, aunque esperamos que el gobierno federal tome oportunamente las medidas que sean pertinentes para mantenerlo dentro de límites razonables para los consumidores. En cualquier caso, el aumento del combustible redunda en aumento en los costos de transporte y producción, que se trasladan al consumidor en progresivos incrementos del costo de los alimentos y servicios.

Otro factor a considerar es la cantidad de despidos en entes federales y privados a consecuencia de recortes presupuestarios. Estos empleados y sus familias, al perder sus ingresos, inmediatamente repercuten en cualquier pronóstico económico de la sociedad. Focalizando en el área de Doral, el mayor impacto lo encontramos en el área empresarial y comercial del este de la ciudad, cercana a la NW 79 Avenida, con el anuncio de alrededor de 1000 despidos de la planta de Pepsi Co. ubicada en esa zona. En esta planta se encuentran oficinas administrativas, de atención al cliente, servicios, embotelladora y distribución de producto. Esta medida es parte de la reducción de personal y costos de la empresa anunciada a prin-

Todos sabemos de RMH, pero muy pocos sabemos que es un hogar fuera del hogar?

“La Casa Ronald McDonald abrió sus puertas hace 36 años en Philadelphia bajo el concepto de ayudar a familias de niños que padecen de cáncer. La primera casa en el Sur de la Florida fue en Miami hace 30 años en los terrenos del Jackson Memorial Medical Center.

La Casa Ronald McDonald es un hogar donde existe la unión familiar desde que entras por sus puertas.

Tener un niño gravemente enfermo conlleva sacrificios por parte de los padres y la familia entera. Y mas si hay que viajar largas millas buscando el mejor hospital o doctor para buscar la cura a una enfermedad o condición. Por eso existen Las Casas Ronald McDonald, para ayudar a esos padres a no tener la preocupación de donde van a vivir mientras su hijo recibe tratamiento médico. Somos un hogar temporero pero que provee una servicio esencial en el proceso de sanación de un niño. Somos un servicio único y necesario”.

Como llegan las familias de otros países a RMH? Las familias pueden utilizar los servicios de la Casa Ronald McDonald através de los trabajadores sociales de los hospitales que saben cuales son los requisitos para poder hospedarse en la misma.

Claro que si. Cualquier individuo, familia, compañía o grupo cívico puede adoptar a una familia através del programa “Comparte una Noche” (Share a Night) auspiciando la estadía de la misma en la casa. La Casa

Ronald McDonald pide una donación de $15 la noche por familia pero si la familia no tiene el medio económico para realizarla se pueden quedar gratis. Pero de esta manera la comunidad puede auspiciar a una familia comenzando solamente con $15 por dia o tres noches.

Cuales son las edades de los niños que están en la casa?

Los niños que están en la casa pueden ser desde recién nacidos hasta los 21 años. Siempre y cuando el paciente este recibiendo tratamiento médico.

Existen varios programas en RMH para ayudar a las familias, cuales serian?

Uno de los mas populares es “Adopta una Comida” (Adopt a Meal) el cual permite a la comunidad, visitar la casa, cocinar para las familias una comida rica y nutritiva y al mismo tiempo compartir con ellos. De esta manera la comunidad conoce las historias de todas estas familias que vienen de otras ciudades o paises del mundo buscando la mejor opción medica para sus hijos.

A veces la gente no entiende que ser artista es mas que es tener un don, porque la capacidad de transmitir alegría y de hacerse querer no es para todos. Pero lo que la vida te da, la vida te lo pide; si no le pones esfuerzo ni trabajas con tu corazón, no vas a llegar lejos”, así nos comentó Gonzalo Real, un joven artista, cantante y compositor nacido en Rosario (Argentina) que dice ser profeta en su tierra… pero de lejos.

Su pasión por la música data desde que era un niño… Desde el folklore, hasta la música romantica y el rock. Su repertorio es amplio.

Cuando decide alzar vuelo hacia Miami, Emilio Estefan le produce su primer disco y el resto es historia: en el 2010 integró la terna de finalistas para “Disco Revelación” en los premios Grammy Latino, y fue elegido artista revelación por Miami Life, también en 2010. El canal argentino “Telefe” toma una de sus temas como canción principal para la novela “Herencia de Amor”, una de las mas vistas en la Argentina. Sin embargo el éxito mas grande de Gonzalo es haberse ganado el respeto de la gente de la industria y de su público.

Gonzalo dice que el Doral es su ciudad, la quiere como su hogar pues representa lo mas hermoso de la sociedad, como lo es la gente que vive en familia; Dice no saber que tenía fans aquí (Después de esta entrevista mas de uno le va a tocar la puerta).

Gonzalo Real sigue promocionando su disco “Detrás de la verdad” producido por Emilio Estefan en la ciudad de Miami y ya esta componiendo su proximo trabajo discográfico.

Es un poeta amable pero sobre todo muy noble que lidera una gran causa: la protección y apoyo a los niños abusados. Gonzalo escribió el tema principal de “Voices for Children” en pocos días y como buen embajador, comparte su canto en cada evento benéfico que la fundación organiza. La

canción se puede bajar de la Internet y 100% de los ingresos por ventas van a la causa. Como dice Gonzalo, todo es por los niños!!

Doral Family Journal asistió el jueves 10 de febrero a una presentación en Brickell, en donde parte de los ingresos se destinaron a “Voices for Children”. Fue increíble ver la gran calidad artística y humana de este artista… Gonzalo Real, desplegó todo su talento ante una gran asistencia de invitados que escucharon atentos al cantante.

Fue maravilloso!! Mucha gente del Doral estuvo ahí, aplaudiendo al vecino que ahora es el amigo, felicitando al artista que ahora es el benefactor de miles de niños.

f you didn’t sign up for Medicare Part B medical insurance when you first became eligible for Medicare, you now have an opportunity to apply — but time is running out. The deadline for applying during the general enrollment period is March 31. If you miss the deadline, you may have to wait until 2013 to apply.

Medicare Part B covers some medical expenses not covered by Medicare Part A (hospital insurance), such as doctors’ fees, outpatient hospital visits, and other medical supplies and services.

When you first become eligible for hospital insurance (Part A), you have a seven-month period in which to sign up for medical insurance (Part B). After that, you may have to pay a higher premium - unless you were covered through an employer’s group health plan or a group health plan based on a spouse’s employment. You are given another opportunity to enroll in Part B during the general enrollment period, from January 1 to March 31 of each year. But each 12-month period that you are eligible for Medicare Part B and do not sign up, the amount of your monthly premium increases by 10 percent.

There are special situations in which you can apply for Medicare Part B outside the general enrollment period. For example, you should contact Social Security about applying for Medicare if: • you are a disabled widow or widower between age 50 and age 65, but have not applied for disability benefits because you are already getting another kind of Social Security benefit; • you worked long enough in a government job where Medicare taxes were paid and you meet the requirements of the Social Security disability program and became disabled before age 65; • you, your spouse, or your dependent child has permanent kidney failure; • you had Medicare medical insurance (Part B) in the past but dropped the coverage; or • you turned down Medicare medical insurance (Part B) when you became entitled to hospital insurance (Part A).

Mayor Carlos Gimenez helps build Habitat for Humanity Home

ayor Carlos A. Gimenez participated in Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami’s Blitz Build 2012, in Liberty City, on February 18, 2012. Mayor Gimenez worked alongside volunteers to help build a home at 2380 NW 51st Street, in Liberty City.

“There is no better feeling than helping people who want to help themselves. Thanks to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami, opportunities are being created for those who are less fortunate,” said Mayor Gimenez. “The Blitz Build is a perfect example of a successful public-private partnership as well as how people from all walks of life can come together and improve not only the lives of individual families, but an entire community.”

Habitat for Humanity seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.

Habitat invites people of all backgrounds, races and religions to build houses together in partnership with families in need.

In this year’s Blitz Build, hundreds of volunteers and corporate sponsors built 10 homes two weeks. All 10 lots were donated

by Miami-Dade County as part of the Infill Housing Initiative Program, whose goal is to revitalize distressed areas by recycling empty or abandoned lots.

As part of the festivities, children and adults with physical and visual disabilities will learn about and engage in adapted sports activities that include kayaking, wheelchair basketball and tennis, handcycling, Goal-ball, and more. till fresh in the memory of Mr. Johnny Prado, coordinator of the National Training Center USA Judo in Coral Springs, FL, are the emotions experienced recently in Europe upon seeing all the success on the mat achieved by several members of USA Judo Team. With great excitement and pride he speaks about the excellent performance of the athletes, especially Kayla Harrison, who won the gold medal, reaffirming why she is the World Champion.

Therefore, we invite the community to get ready to assist and support our Team USA at the Judo World Cup 20121 that will be held in the city of Doral for the third consecutive year. It is a unique opportunity to witness the art and energy of these great athletes who have 4 or more years training to make it to the top positions on the internationally ranking. “The two previous years, judokas who have attended the Cup have been very well prepared. This time we will have a display of high level skills and also the qualifying matches to decide who of our two athletes on the 73Kg category, Nick Delpopolo or Michael Eldred, will occupy the only spot available in that category on the Olympic delegation. Both competitors need support from the public in attendance. It will be an interesting tournament, because a lot of technique, knowledge, moves and tactics will be displayed by the participating athletes. It is definitely an event worth attending!”

Judo World Cup was held for the first time in USA in 2010 and then in 2011, always in Doral. The first two Cups for athletes, “served as qualifying tournaments. Those medalists accumulated score to qualify for London. The classification will close on April 27 with the last tournament to take place in Montreal, Canada with the Senior Pan American Championship.” On the other hand, this year’s Cup will be part of the training and preparation of athletes already qualified, to be measured against Olympic rivals before arriving in London, and thus to refine any details that may later lead them to contest an Olympic medal. There will be high level combats. “We have confirmed attendance of the teams from Cuba, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Canada, Argentina, Dominican Republic, Mexico and Brazil. Everyone will attend with their athletes because we will also do a training camp that will last for 2 days after the end of the World Cup. “We expect about 200 athletes attending the Doral World Cup. The presence of the Cuban team, one of the best in the world, will raise the level of training camp and will provide athletes a great opportunity to complete their preparation and warm-up for the Olympics.”

Additionally, the day after the conclusion of the Cup, the Judo U.S. Open will take place. All these tournaments leading up to the Olympics “will be an important preparation, both for those who have al-

ready qualified for the Olympics and for the athletes that are ready to begin the next cycle to get ready in 4 years for Brazil 2016.”

For an athlete to participate in an international tournament or the World Cup, USA Judo requires him to have competed and qualified for the medals in a national tournament or to have previously competed at international level with favorable results. Thus the Federation ensures that the athlete is ready to face the best in the global competitive Elite. For every international gold medal an athlete receives 100 points, 60 points for silver and 40 for bronze. They also receive a minimum score range (between 4 and 12) for winning one or more fights during the tournament. All this provides an incentive to the athlete to continue participating and improving their technique and preparation to achieve stepping up the medal’s podium. Mr. Prado explained that “to qualify for the Olympics, a male athlete is required to remain between the first 22 in the world rankings. For women is a little tighter and more difficult because it considers only the 14 best in each division. It is a tough competition for classification.”

Judo in USA is a young a sport, as young are the athletes on the TEAM USA delegation this year. However, the international results of those athletes have been so good that hope and enthusiasm all has filled the hearts of their coaches, sponsors and the growing mass of public that gradually have become interested in the team’s progress. Kayla Harrison, Travis Stevens, Marti Malloy, Kyle Vashkulat, Brad Bolen, Michael Eldred and Nick Delpopolo are already qualified for London, while Angelica Delgado and Katie Sell depend on the results they obtain in the Montreal Pan American championship to determine if they will be in the Olympics in London or will have to wait 4 more years.

All of them will attend the World Cup in Doral.

This will be a unique opportunity to witness these matches live and to support these promising young USA Judo Team athletes. Mr. Prado believes that Team USA “is a very young team on average age, but we are producing skilled athletes that are equal-level rivals for those from countries that have a much larger budget for Judo than ours. Judo in the USA competes with the massive interest in sports such as basketball, soccer, baseball, hockey, football, which influence many people, move a lot of money and receive the support from large companies because they will reach more people. “Public and fans participation and support on the activities of USA Judo, will help reach much more than the 5000 athletes who are currently practicing at a competitive level throughout the country.”

This upcoming May, the JUDO World Cup in Doral will be a great opportunity for our community to show their support for Team USA. It definitely is an event worth attending!

olimpiadas como para los muchachos que están preparándose para comenzar el próximo ciclo de 4 años rumbo a Brasil 2016. “ Para que un atleta pueda combatir en un torneo o Copa del Mundo, USA Judo le exige que haya competido y calificado en el cuadro de medallas en un torneo nacional o que haya competido anteriormente a nivel internacional con resultados favorables. De ese modo la Federación se asegura que el atleta está preparado para enfrentarse a los mejores de la Elite competitiva mundial. Por cada medalla de oro internacional el atleta recibe 100 puntos, por plata 60 puntos y por bronce 40. Igualmente reciben un mínimo rango de puntaje (entre 4 y 12) por ganar una o mas peleas durante el torneo. Todo esto le proporciona un incentivo al atleta para seguir participando y mejorando su técnica y preparación hasta lograr colarse en el cuadro de medallas.

Explica el Sr. Prado que “para clasificar para las olimpiadas a nivel masculino se requiere que el atleta se mantenga ubicado entre los 22 primeros en el ranking mundial. El de las mujeres es un poco más apretado y más difícil porque se considera solamente las 14 mejores de cada división.

Es una competencia muy dura para la clasificación.”

El Judo en USA es un deporte joven, como joven es su delegación de este año. Sin embargo, los resultados internacionales de los atletas han sido tan buenos que llenan de esperanza e ilusión a sus entrenadores, patrocinadores y a la creciente masa de público que poco a poco se ha interesado en el progreso del equipo. Kayla Harrison, Travis Stevens, Marti Malloy, Kyle Vashkulat, Brad Bolen, Michael Eldred y Nick Delpopolo ya cumplen con los requisitos para participar en Londres, mientras que Angélica Delgado y Katie Sell dependen aun de los resultados que obtengan en el Pan Americano de Montreal para definir si estarán en las Olimpiadas este año o tendrán que esperar 4 años más. Todos ellos estarán presentes en la Copa Mundial en Doral.

Esta será una oportunidad única de presenciar en vivo y apoyar a estas jóvenes promesas del Judo Nacional. Opina el Sr. Prado que TEAM USA “es un equipo muy joven por el promedio de edad que tiene, pero estamos produciendo atletas calificados y compitiendo con países que cuentan con un presupuesto para Judo mucho mayor que el nuestro. El Judo en USA compite con el interés por deportes masivos como el básquetbol, fútbol, beisbol, hockey, soccer, que mueven mucha gente y dinero y las empresas grandes apoyan mas esos deportes porque van a llegar a mas personas.”

En la medida que el público participe y apoye las actividades de USA Judo, así se podrá llegar a mucho más de los 5000 atletas que lo practican actualmente a nivel competitivo en todo el país.

Con gran emoción y orgullo comenta los excelentes resultados de los atletas, en especial Kayla Harrison, quien consiguió la medalla de oro, reafirmando que es la Campeona Mundial.

Es por ello que invita a la comunidad a prepararse para asistir y apoyar a nuestro TEAM USA durante la Copa Mundial de Judo que por tercer año consecutivo tendrá como sede la ciudad de Doral. Es una oportunidad única de presenciar la técnica y energía de estos excelentes atletas que llevan 4 o más años preparándose intensamente para dejar muy en alto el nombre del país en el ámbito internacional. “Los dos años anteriores los judokas que han venido han sido muy preparados. Tendremos competencias de alto nivel y además los combates clasificatorios para decidir quien de nuestros dos atletas de la categoría de 73Kg, Michael Eldred o Nick Delpopolo, ocupará el único lugar disponible en ese rubro en la delegación olímpica. Ambos competidores necesitan el apoyo del público. Va a ser un torneo interesante porque se verá mucha técnica, conocimiento, movimientos y tácticas por parte de los atletas participantes.

Vale la pena asistir”.

La Copa Mundial de Judo se realizó por primera vez en USA en el 2010 y luego en 2011, siempre en Doral. Las dos primeras Copas para los atletas “sirvieron como torneo clasificatorio. Implicó puntuación que acumulaban los medallistas para clasificar para Londres. La clasificación se va a cerrar el 27 de Abril con el último torneo que es el Panamericano Senior a realizarse en la ciudad de Montreal, Canadá.” Por lo tanto, la Copa de este año formará parte del entrenamiento y preparación de los atletas ya clasificados, para medirse ante sus rivales Olímpicos antes de llegar a Londres, y de esa manera poder pulir los detalles que posteriormente puedan llevarles a disputar una medalla olímpica. Serán combates de gran nivel. “Tenemos confirmación de los equipos de Cuba, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Canadá, Argentina, Republica Dominicana, México, Brasil. Todos van a asistir con sus atletas porque además vamos a hacer un campo de entrenamiento que durará 2 días después que finalice la Copa del Mundo.” Se espera que a la Copa de Miami vengan aproximadamente 200 atletas. La presencia del equipo cubano, uno de los mejores del mundo, elevará el nivel del campamento de entrenamiento y proporcionará a los atletas una estupenda oportunidad de completar su preparación y fogueo para las Olimpiadas.

Adicionalmente, al día siguiente de concluir la Copa se realizará el US Open de Judo. Todos estos torneos previos a las Olimpiadas “van a ser importantes como preparación, tanto para los que ya han clasificado para las

Mas de 8,300 venezolanos en Miami acudieron con entusiasmo a sufragar en las elecciones primarias, que tuvo lugar el pasado domingo 12 de febrero en el Centro electoral ubicado en la ciudad de Doral, para escoger al candidato presidencial de Venezuela y en las que resultó ganador Enrique Carriles Radonski.
