The current crisis of the world economy is due to two impacts in the U.S. economy (the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers unleashed in 2008, a mortgage crisis that also trigger economic catastrophe in the European Union and the loss of the AAA rating to AA + from Moody’s Risks Agency and subsequently, the low rating that would give Standard & Poor’s), maintain the economies of many countries in total uncertainty...

The Doral residents and business owners do not escape this uncertainty...

Some think it is a complicated scenario, but others think the best thing to do is act responsibly and keep finances in order. That’ll be speaking on the following pages on both sides of the economy in Doral.

And here in the city we all have different views.

We will also be talking about an issue that we must be vigilant with as the Redistricting, as we will have elections next year.

Every 10 years the federal government prepares a census count of residents by state and county; This is the basis for the redistricting process to establish districts to federal and state public positions fairly and with the participation of different sectors and political structures.

As always, we will get informed and let you know!

La actual situación de crisis en que se encuentra la economía mundial, debido a dos fenómenos económicos negativos en Estados Unidos (la quiebra de Lehman Brothers que desató, en el 2008, una crisis hipotecaria que desencadenaría igualmente la catástrofe económica en la Unión Europea y la pérdida de la calificación de AAA a AA+ de la Agencia de Riesgos Moodys y posteriormente, la baja de calificación que le diera Standard & Poor’s ), mantienen las economías de muchos países en total incertidumbre…

Los residentes y empresarios de Doral no escapan a esta incertidumbre…

Algunos piensan que se ve un escenario complicado, pero otros piensan que lo mejor que queda por hacer es actuar con responsabilidad y mantener las finanzas en orden. De eso estaré hablando en las próximas paginas sobre las dos caras de la economía en Doral.

Y es que aquí en la ciudad, todos tienen diferentes puntos de vista.

También estaremos hablando sobre un tema que debemos estar atentos como es la Redistribución de los Distritos, ya que tendremos elecciones el próximo año.

Y es que cada 10 años el Gobierno federal prepara un censo para el conteo de los residentes por estado y condados, y es la base para el proceso de redistribución electoral para establecer los distritos para puestos públicos federales y estatales de manera equitativa y con la participación de los diferentes sectores y estructuras políticas.

Como siempre, estaremos pendientes y se lo haremos saber!

El letrero de la discordia

l miércoles 17 de Agosto un grupo de residentes de Doral Park se acercó a las Alcaldía del Doral y a través del Concejal Boria para presentar una moción para impedir la instalación de un letrero eléctrico en la entrada del Doral Park Country Club. La exposición de los residentes utilizó términos bastante fuertes: “falta de estética, desproporción, ánimo de abrir la puertas de un club privado a personas no residentes, falta de organización, falta de gusto al optar por copiar el estilo “Las Vegas”, etc.

El grupo fue informado que no era potestad del Consejo tomar una decisión al respecto, ya que ese rubro le corresponde a la administración y los departamentos asignados.

La advertencia del abogado de la ciudad fue que ningún concejal podía solicitar una moción, reconsideración o hacer un comentario relacionando al tema. Sugerencia que fue aceptada inmediatamente sin oposición y por la cual se presentaron las autoridades correspondientes y fuera del recinto se iniciaron las conversaciones con los demandantes.

The resident’s presentation contained several serious accusations including: “lack of ethics”, “disproportion”, “intent to open the private club to outside non-residents”, “lack of organization”, “lack of taste for opting to copy the “Vegas” style”, etc.

The group was informed that the Council did not have the authority to make a decision, due to the fact that that responsibility corresponds to the administration and its assigned departments. The city attorney warned that none of the Council members was to make a motion, consideration or comment on the topic. This suggestion was accepted immediately without any opposition and thus, the corresponding authorities presented themselves and the conversations were moved to outside the premises.

Doral Family Journal visited the Country Club offices and was informed of the following: 1. The purchase and installation of the billboard was approved in January by the Home Owners Association.

2. The association obtained the city permits and started to make the changes following the suggestions of the city technicians.

3. The installation was not able to go in the effect due to scheduling problems with FPL. 4. Once the difficulties were corrected, it was informed during the association meeting that the installations were going to go forward. It was at this point that tempers flared and the request to go back on the decision was made, even with the investment already made.

According to Doral Park Country Club authorities, the problem is lack of information; the demanding party does not know the exact location of the billboard, who the property belongs to, and the dimensions of the billboard among other things. With the goal of reaching a consensus, conversations on the topic will continue in search for the most democratic and above all, efficient, solution to the problem so that everyone can be satisfied.

Doral Park Country Club is one of the oldest and most recognized associations in the city, home to multiple business meetings and the Doral Rotary Club. Being one of our city “jewels” we hope for a quick and fair resolution.

Doral Family Journal fue a las oficinas del Doral Park Country Club y ahí se le informó lo siguiente: 1. La compra e instalación del letrero fue aprobada en el mes de enero por el directorio de la asociación de propietarios (Home Owners Association Board) 2. La asociación a su vez conto con los permisos de la ciudad y llegó a hacer cambios siguiendo sugerencias de las mismos administradores 3. La instalación no se pudo hacer efectiva por problemas en la distribución de horarios de la FPL 4. Una vez subsanados los inconvenientes se informó que se precedía a instalar el letrero, esto fue en una reunión de la Asociación. En esa reunión se caldearon los ánimos y nació el pedido de nulidad de la decisión, no importando que la inversión ya estaba hecha.

Según las autoridades de Doral Park Country Club, existe un problema de falta de información, los demandantes no saben exactamente la ubicación del letrero, ni quién es el dueño de la propiedad, ni las dimensiones del letrero, así como otros puntos importantes.

Con el fin de lograr un consenso, se van a continuar las conversaciones buscando encontrar la salida mas democrática y sobre todo eficiente, que en su medida haga feliz a todos.

Doral Park Country Club es una de las asociaciones mas antiguas y ponderosas de la ciudad, cede de múltiple reuniones de negocios y hogar del Doral Rotary Club. Siendo una de las “joyas” de la ciudad desde estas líneas hacemos los votos para un pronto entendimiento.

The two faces of the Doral economy In macroeconomic perspective, Doral’s economy has not been hit as hard as other cities in the United States.

D

oral has both sides of the coin. The first side comes from the masses of immigrants who come every year with fresh money and were forced to leave their country for some reason and the other side comes from those individuals who have resided in the city for various years or have a permanent stake.

The first one gives us fresh airs of investment as we in general it allows for the construction of new shopping centers and residential communities as well as pushing through the cycle of businesses closing and/or changing strategies for various reasons.

The amount of immigrants that arrive at the city are far larger than predicted and as a result there is a high demand for services.

This demand has demonstrated positive signs of local growth, such as the construction of a new private K-8 educational center and two nurseries, signs that indicate a growth in population, as well as the construction of new homes and the low devaluation of property compared to neighboring cities.

We conducted interviews in different strategic locations to various businessmen and residents.

The responses obliged us to conduct an analytical study of the economic condition in Doral with special interest in its economic development.

We had to split the city in two to be able to determine the equilibrium point, discovering that two types of economic engines move totally different.

The first, from 97th avenue to the Palmetto expressway has an economic drive that is totally dependent on commercial and industrial activity and the second is from 97th avenue to the Turnpike and has a drive that is both commercial and residential.

Doral’s economy is generally well, but there are many sectors and industries going through tough times, especially small businesses. Doral is maintaining it self somewhat more than the rest of the cities and markets in South Florida. While things are not moving very fast, businesses are having lots of difficulties in receiving loans, things that happen due to the constant effort to protect those loans and investments, but at the same time the people are surviving and doing the impossible to move forward those businesses. I believe we should work as a city, for new ideas and to have the courage to implement programs and new ideas.

Doral is one of the cities that has reserves of approx. $14M and no budget deficit. The pride of successful management! But neither of these sides are exempt from the economic downtimes.

The most affected part is 79th ave. The reasons for this are determined by the following: The entire area depends on a high percentage on the more than 120,000 individuals who come from nearby cities to work. These local businesses have experiences reduced shifts and layoffs due to the economic adjustments. Resulting in fewer clienteles to visit these businesses, especially during lunchtime, directly affecting restaurants & cafeterias, those being the area’s most abundant enterprises. The contrary of the residential zone.

In the west side of 97th avenue, it was observed that the majority of commercial entities were occupied and thus are also those with the least cases of closures and bankruptcies. Its potential is in the large number of businesses and residents who live and work into a cycle of economic self-sustainability, that is, they live and consume in their own area.

During times of crisis, supermarkets are the highest sellers, demonstrating that during a bad economy, individual’s food is prepared well for home or for work, demonstrating the self-sustainability of services. There are also less restaurants and cafeterias, but their competition is more aggressive as prices, service, quality and ambient are factors that more greatly affect one’s decisions in residential and family areas.

Our elected officials, together with the economic development department of the city of Doral, are concerned about it’s welfare, and are looking for

solutions, some immediately and some long term for the area of 79 Avenue and its vicinity. One is to redesign strategies and commercial trade routes in the areas with the sole purpose of attracting more public and commerce for this area, which has been affected by the economic crisis. This is an area of businesses dependent in construction whose trade is mostly the selling of floors, kitchens, and bathrooms. Part of these solutions was to declare that avenue as a district. Its official name is the Doral Design District (DDD).

“We are trying for merchants and business owners in that area to form an alliance so that they themselves dictate the requirements, so that they can later develop a BID (Business Improvement District).

Much like that implemented in the Miracle Mile area for programs marketing, sewers, etc., “ said Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera, Coordinator of the Doral Economic Department.

She also told us that the mayor announced an advisory council (volunteer) for the DDD, comprised of business owners, lawyers and activists who are helping to carry out projects. “Also in consideration is having art festivals on the streets of 97th and banners to put in light posts as well as the proposal for four 20 to 30 feet pillars, two in the entrance on 79th avenue and 25th street and two in the entrance on 79th avenue and 36th street. We are only missing for the developers and investors to make not of this and the incentives that are available for them. It is the only area in Doral where they are available.” said Rodriguez Aguilera.

These are the adjustments to the various clouds for the goal of sunlight at the end of the day.

The majority’s view is that the economy is a little weak, from my point of view and personally things have not been going very well, every day I am having people, everyday I am meeting with investors, etc.… The only thing I see in a financial and real estate level is that banks are a little bit pressed. In Doral, one of the few problems I find is in the permitting, where the city should make efforts (although this is a problem of all municipalities) to streamline the permitting for the opening of entities and remodeling.

Las dos caras de la economía en Doral En la economía de Doral, desde el punto de vista macroeconómico no es golpeada como otras ciudades de los Estados Unidos.

La economía del Doral en general esta bien, aunque todavía hay muchos sectores e industrias que están pasando momentos difíciles, especialmente los negocios pequeños, Doral se esta manteniendo mas o menos bien comparada al resto de ciudades y mercados del sur de la Florida… Aunque las cosas no se están moviendo tan rápidamente, los negocios tienen muchas dificultades para conseguir prestamos del Banco, cosas que surgen ya que lo que se busca siempre es proteger esos prestamos e inversiones, pero a la misma vez esta gente esta sobreviviendo y haciendo cosas imposibles para sacar adelante esos negocios. Creo que necesitamos trabajar con la ciudad, el DBC y otros negocios, para ideas nuevas, y tener el coraje de implementar programas e ideas nuevas.

Roberto Millan:

El reflejo de la mayoría es que la economía esta un poco debilitada, desde mi punto de vista y personalmente las cosas me han ido muy bien, todos lo días estoy recibiendo personas, todos los días estoy viendo inversionistas, etc. Lo único que yo veo a nivel financiero y Real State es que los bancos andan un poquito apretados…

A nivel del Doral, uno de los pocos problemas que yo veo es la parte de la permisologia, la ciudad debe de hacer esfuerzos (aunque ese es el problema de todos los municipios ) para agilizar la permisologia para la apertura de locales y remodelaciones.

Bettina Rodríguez Aguilera, Coordinadora del Departamento Económico de Doral misma, y están buscado soluciones, algunas de manera inmediata y otras a largo plazo para el área de la 79 Avenida y sus adyacencias. Una de ellas es rediseñar estrategias y caminos comerciales en las áreas con la única finalidad de atraer mas público y comercio para esta zona, que ha sido afectada por la crisis económicas. Esta es un área de locales comerciales dependientes de la construcción donde su mayor comercio son la venta de pisos, cocinas, baños, Parte de estas soluciones fue declarar esa avenida como un distrito. Su nombre oficial es Doral Design District o ( D.D.D. ).

“Se esta tratando que los negocios comerciantes y propietarios de esa área formen una alianza para que de esa forma ellos mismos dicten sus requerimientos, para que después desarrollen un BID (Business Improvement District). Muy parecido a lo implementado en la zona de Miracle Mile para hacer programas de Mercadeo, de alcantarillado, etc.”, nos comentó Bettina Rodríguez Aguilera, Coordinadora del Departamento Económico de Doral.

También nos comentó que el alcalde a nombrado un advisory council (voluntarios) para el DDD, compuesto por dueños de negocio, abogados y activistas que están ayudando para el cumplimiento de los proyectos. “También se piensa hacer festivales de arte en las calle de la 79 ave. y ya se están diseñando lo banners para poner en los postes luces y se esta presentando para poner 4 pilares de aprox.

20 a 30 pies dos en cada entrada de la 79 avenida y 25 calle y dos en la 79 ave. y 36 st. … Solo queda que los desarrolladores e inversionistas tomen nota de todo esto y los incentivos que están disponibles ahora para ellos. Es la única zona en Doral que están disponibles”, dijo Rodríguez Aguilera.

Estos son los ajustes que se amoldan a las diferentes nubes de temporales que al final de el día se vera un resplandeciente sol.

la gran mayoría de los locales comerciales están ocupados, y por ende también es en donde menos se desocupan o se van a bancarrota. Su potencial se concentra en el gran numero de empresas y de residentes que viven y trabajan haciendo un ciclo económico de retroalimentación, es decir, vive y consume en su propia área. En tiempos de crisis, los supermercados son los que mas venden, demostrando que durante una economía mala, la persona sus alimentos, los prepara bien sea para su casa o para llevar al trabajo, en este caso se pronuncia la retroalimentación de servicios. También en esta área existen menos restaurantes y cafeterías, pero su competencia es mas agresiva por lo que también los precios, servicio, calidad, y ambiente son factores que influyen al momento de elegir un determinado servicio, mas cuando es residencial y familiar.

Nuestros oficiales electos, conjuntamente con el departamento de desarrollo económico de la ciudad de Doral, están preocupados por el bienestar de la

oral tiene las dos caras de la moneda. La primera es la alimentada por esa gran masa de inmigrantes que llega todos los años con dinero fresco, y que fueron obligados a salir de sus países por algún motivo, y la segunda por individuos que ya residen en la ciudad desde hace varios años, o tienen su matriz permanente.

La primera nos da aires frescos de inversión, que por lo general nos permite la construcción de nuevos centros comerciales y puntos residenciales, y el ciclaje de negocios cerrados y/o cambios de ramo por diversos motivos. La cantidad de inmigrantes que llega a la Ciudad superan lo previsto, dando como resultado una enorme demanda de servicios.

Esta demanda a dado señales positivas de crecimiento local, por ejemplo, la construcción de un nuevo centro educativo privado K-8 y dos nuevas guarderías, señales que nos indican una creciente masa de pobladores, además de la construcción de nuevas viviendas y la poca devaluación de las propiedades en comparación de sus vecinas ciudades.

Realizamos varias entrevistas en diferentes puntos estratégicos a varios empresarios y residentes.

Todas estas apreciaciones, nos obligo hacer un estudio analítico de la situación económica del Doral, dejando un interesante análisis en su desarrollo económico.

Tuvimos que dividir en dos a la ciudad para poder determinar su punto de equilibrio, encontrando que dos tipos de motores económicos se mueven totalmente diferentes.

La primera, desde la 97 Avenida, hasta el Palmetto, tiene un poder económico totalmente dependiente comercial e industrial y la segunda, desde la misma 97 Avenida hasta la Turnpike es totalmente comercial y residencial.

Doral es una de las ciudades que tiene unas reservas aproximado de casi $14 Millones, y sin déficit presupuestario. Orgullo de buena Administración!

Pero estas dos caras de la ciudad no se escapan del mal tiempo macroeconómico, La parte mas afectada es la zona de la 79 Avenida.

Sus razones la determinamos por los siguientes caracteres: Toda esa área, en un gran numero de porcentaje depende de mas de 120,000 personas que a diario vienen de otras ciudades vecinas del Doral a trabajar. Estas empresas locales han experimentado recortes de horas de trabajo y despidos adoptados por los ajustes económicos. Resultando con la poca clientela que visita estos comercios principalmente en las horas de almuerzo, afectando directamente a los restaurante, cafeterías, siendo estos los tipos de comercios mas abundantes del área. Que es lo contrario de la zona residencial.

T

he City of Doral welcomed their new Public Information Coordinator, replacing old-timer Helena Poleo. In her position, Ms.French will function as communications liaison between the city and media, private and public organizations and community groups, developing informative materials concerning city operations, programs and events.

Most recently, Natalie French served as Administrative Assistant Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

French was a former TV Producer at City of Miami...... after working for over thirteen years in media outlets including Univision and PBS. Also, she was a Outreach Coordinator Miami Book Fair International/Florida Center for the Literary Arts.

“I am thrilled to work for a vibrant City that has demonstrated what good governance is all about and has so much potential. Helena has done an outstanding job of keeping the community informed and I hope to follow in her footsteps.”

Natalie French es nombrada nueva Coordinadora Pública de Doral

L

a Ciudad de Doral le da la bienvenida a su nueva Coordinadora de Información Pública, en sustitución de la periodista Helena Poleo. En su posición, Natalie French funcionará como enlace de comunicaciones entre la ciudad y los medios de comunicación, organizaciones públicas y privadas y grupos comunitarios, el desarrollo de materiales informativos sobre la ciudad las operaciones, programas y eventos.

Más recientemente, se desempeñó como Asistente Administrativa de las Escuelas Públicas del Condado Miami-Dade.

French fue productora de televisión en la Ciudad de Miami ... tras trabajar por mas de trece anõs en los medios de comunicación como Univisión y PBS. También fue coordinadora de Difusión de la Feria Internacional del Libro de Miami / Florida.

“Estoy muy contenta de trabajar en una ciudad vibrante, que ha demostrado tener un buen gobierno y tiene mucho potencial. Helena ha hecho un excelente trabajo de mantener informada a la comunidad y espero poder continuar sus pasos.”

Education | Educación “Saving a single life justifies the use of cameras in streetlights”… Doral City Council”

Cabrera proposed the installation of timers to warn drivers of when the light will change.

Doral Family Journal surveyed adults and teens of ages 15 through 18 in which 9 out of 10 were in favor of the project. Those who opposed it indicated that they were worried about being unjustly ticketed or getting in an accident when the light changes rapidly.

We took our concerns to Mayor Bermudez who kindly gave us an interview:

I

n the recent meeting of the Doral City Council, councilman Luigi Boria requested a review of this project with the following motion: The implementation of the Red Traffic Light Camera programs in many cities across South Florida has been problematic, particularly with respect to prosecution in the courts and the level of actual revenues that being collected. Some cities have even suspended or terminated their programs. As Doral is now rolling out its program, I think it would be a good opportunity for the council to revisit any issues and collectively determine whether we want to continue to move forward.” Council member Boria stated that the traffic light camera tickets were a form of unnecessary taxation, and that he believes that warning will suffice given that such infractions have to do more with people’s conscience and should not be imposed. He spoke on instances in which the light changes can be dangerous, as people will brake hard or accelerate very rapidly to avoid the fine. He insisted that a good portion of drivers are not very familiar with traffic laws and that they should focus on educating drivers before punishing those who commit infractions. Council member Boria’s comments were based on a private survey in which 7 out of 10 persons did not want the program.

The response from the mayor, the chief of Police, and the members of the council was determinant: The Mayor indicated that the only purpose of the project was to guarantee the life and safety of the residents since the accident in intersections are far too often and far too serious and thus it is the duty of the city’s authorities to protect its residents and visitors. He assured the implementation of the program does not violate any constitutional right (following the decision of a Broward court) and it is not a form of taxation given that by definition a tax would affect even those who do not commit the infractions, and that is clearly not the case. The mayor accepted that the project should be monitored over the course of a year and only then can it be evaluated. He insisted that it

should be tested and will only be utilized if it demonstrates results. Since the city was formed, there have been 67 traffic casualties, and that number should be any higher.

The city Police Chief, Captain Rick Gomez, presented the following statistics. In 2006, there were 4,200 collisions, 4,300 in 2007, and the number dropped to 3,400 and has stayed that way since the police department was instituted in 2008. The police see the traffic light cameras in a very good way given that similar experiences in other cities have helped significantly reduce accidents. The chief of police also mentioned that there have been numerous efforts to educate the population, especially now that the school year is starting, though information sessions with PTAs, principals and administrators.

Vice Mayor Michael di Prieto indicated that the 90-day warning period was indeed respected and that they tried to educate residents as much as possible to follow the law. He added that making a right turn on a red light, without stopping, is a traffic violation. This is taught in driving schools and thus following the correct regulations will never lead to an infraction. He also agreed that it is too early to make a decision on the project given that it is still in its initial phase. He proposed to include informational videos in the city’s TV channel (77) as well as further push for community education.

Council member Ana Maria Rodriguez fully supports the project, assuring that it the only goal is to save lives and make the city safer, based on the idea that people are conscious that if the follow the law, there is nothing to worry about.

Council member Pete Cabrera also stated that traffic has dramatically increased in recent years and it takes extreme measures to solve the problems associated with the influx of cars. He added that in cities where the project has been implemented the motives behind it were not economic but rather for safety, as is the case in Doral. As part of the efforts to improve the system, council member

DFJ: The main concern that people have is which is the main reason for placing the cameras in some intersections?

JCB: “The main reason is safety, we are interested in saving lives and this is one way of doing it.

The economic aspect is not a motive but rather a measure. This is not a tax but rather a way of doing things right and following the law” DFJ: What is the process when a photo is taken, can it be appealed, what happens if you pass while it is changing, what about possible errors?

JCB: “Certainly you can appeal, it is a constitutional right. Also, the process is not so simple, first the company in charge reviews the infraction and then if a police officer sees that there are no infractions, or it is not clear, it is discarded.

We know that nothing is perfect, hence the additional controls and the right to appeal.”

DFJ: How much does this project cost to the city?

JCB: “ The investment is 100% by the company that installed the cameras, this project does cost anything, as is the law. The revenue from traffic tickets are split between the company, the county (for hospitals and trauma centers), and the city.

DFJ: Council member Cabrera spoke of the use of timers, is that possible?

JCB: “It is a very good idea and it can be financed with the revenue this project gives to the city. We will work on this and other additional things.

Las cámaras en los semáforos toma un nuevo matiz Sin embargo ésto está cediendo en los últimos días.

La policía ve con muy buenos ojos la instalación de los semáforos con cámaras ya que experiencias similares en muchas ciudades han concluido con una reducción significativa de accidentes. El jefe de Policía explicó que son muchos los esfuerzos que han realizado para educar a la población, sobre todo ahora que se inicia el año escolar, esto a través de charlas informativas con PTAs, directores y administradores.

El Vice Alcalde, Michael Di Pietro indico por su parte que el periodo de “advertencia” si se respetó y fue de 90 días, que se trató de educar lo mas posible a los residentes pero esta en ellos cumplir la ley. Agrego que doblar a la derecha con luz roja “únicamente” es una violación de la ley si antes no se detiene el automóvil (la luz roja es siempre un PARE). Esto se enseña en las escuelas de manejo, por tanto seguir correctamente las regulaciones no repercute en una infracción, nunca. También aseveró que es muy prematuro tomar algún decisión ya que el proyecto esta en su fase inicial.

Propuso incluir en el canal del la ciudad, el 77, videos informativos e impulsar aún mas la labor informativa y educativa en los residentes.

La concejal Ana María Rodríguez apoyó el proyecto en su totalidad asegurando que el único fin de este es salvar vidas y lograr que la ciudad sea mas segura, esto en base a la conciencia de la gente que si se cumple la ley, no hay nada de que preocuparse.

El concejal Pete Cabrera puntualizó que en los últimos años en tráfico en la ciudad se ha incrementado dramáticamente y que solo medidas extremas pueden solucionar los problemas suscitados. Que en la ciudades, en donde el programa se ha instalado los motivos no eran económicos si no de seguridad, y que este es el caso del Doral.

Como parte de los esfuerzos para mejorar el sistema, el Concejal Cabrera propone la instalación de medidores (timmers) para advertir cuando la luz amarilla se va a producir.

Doral Family Journal realizó su propia encuesta en la ciudad, 9 de cada 10 personas (adultos y adolecentes entre 15 y 18 años) se mostraron a favor del proyecto, los que se opusieron indicaron que lo que les preocupaba era ser multados injustamente o caer en un accidente cuando la luz amarilla aparece intempestivamente..

Llevamos estas inquietudes al Alcalde Juan Carlos Bermudez y gentilmente nos respondió, aquí en entrevista: DFJ: La gran preocupación de la gente es cual es la razón principal de colocar cámaras en ciertas intersecciones?

JCB: “La intensión es netamente de seguridad, nos interesa salvar vidas y esta es una forma de lograrlo. Lo económico no es una razón, solo una medida… Esto no es un impuesto, es una oportunidad de hacer bien las cosas y cumplir la ley.

DFJ: Como es el proceso cuando se toma una foto, se puede apelar, que pasa si se esta pasando la luz ámbar, que pasan con los errores de apreciación?

JCB: “Claro que se puede apelar la decisión, eso es constitucional, además el proceso no es tan simple, primero la compañía encargada revisa la infracción, luego un agente de policía, si se ve que no hay infracción, o no es clara, se descarta. Se sabe que nada es infalible, por eso hay controles adicionales y aun así, hay derecho de apelación.

DFJ: Cuánto le ha costado a la ciudad este proyecto?

JCB: La inversión es 100% de la compañía que instaló las cámaras, éste proyecto no nos cuesta nada, así es la ley. Los ingresos por concepto de multas se reparten entre la compañía, el Condado (para hospitales y centros de trauma) y la ciudad.

n la reciente reunión del Consejo Edil, el concejal Luigi Boria solicito revisar este proyecto con la siguiente moción: “La implementación del programa de Red Traffic Light Camera”, la cual ha sido controversial en muchas ciudades de todo el sur de Florida, particularmente por lo referente a la acusación en lo tribunales y el nível de ingresos reales que se están recogiendo. Algunas ciudades incluso han suspendido o cancelado sus programas. Ahora que Doral está extendiendo su programa, creo que sería una buena oportunidad para que el Consejo vuelva a examinar todas las cuestiones y determinar colectivamente si queremos seguir con él.

En su alocución, el concejal Boria precisó que las multas por concepto de pasar la luz roja son una forma de impuesto innecesario, que a su entender una amonestación seria suficiente ya que las infracciones son asuntos de “conciencia” y eso no debe ser imponible.

Hablo de los casos en que el cambio de luz a ámbar hace riesgoso el conducir, ya que para evitar pasar se frena intempestivamente o se acelera demasiado. Insistió en que el común de la gente no conoce bien las reglas de conducir y que se debería educar primero a través de programas especiales antes de castigar a los infractores. Los comentarios del Concejal Boria están basados en una encuesta privada por la cual 7 de cada 10 personas no quieren ese programa.

La respuesta del Alcalde, el jefe de Policía y de los demás miembros del Consejo fue determinante: El Alcalde indicó que “el único objetivo del proyecto es garantizar la vida y la seguridad de los ciudadanos, ya que son mucho y muy graves los accidentes en las intersecciones afectadas y el deber de las autoridades de la ciudad es por encima de todo proteger a sus residentes y visitantes”. Agregó que la implementación del programa no viola ningún derecho constitucional (esto según una reciente sentencia de un juez de Broward) ni tampoco se constituye en una forma de impuesto ya que por definición un impuesto afectaría también a los no infractores y no es el caso.. “Solo pagan los que violan la ley”. El alcalde aceptó que se deberá monitorear el proyecto y que recién en un año se podrá evaluarlo.

Insistió que el programa debe de ser probado y solo si funciona, será utilizado. Desde que la ciudad fue incorporada, 67 accidentes de trafico se han suscitado, y ese numero no debe de aumentar.

El Jefe de la Policía de Doral, Rick Gómez, nos dio los siguientes datos: En el 2006 sucedieron 4200 colisiones, 4300 en 2007, y al instalarse la policía (2008) los accidentes fueron 3,400 y esa es la tendencia de los años siguientes.

Florida Redistricting 2012, Democracy in Action

R

edistricting refers to the process by which census data is used to redraw the lines and boundaries of electoral districts within a state to ensure that districts are substantially equal in population. This process affects districts at all levels of government-from local school boards and city councils to state legislatures and the U.S. House of Representatives. Florida gained two seats from the reapportionment after the 2010 census. The state population increased by 2.8 million residents, (17.6 percent.) According to the Article III, Sections 20 and 21 of the Florida Constitution state: “ No apportionment plan or (individual) district shall be drawn with the intent to favor or disfavor a political party or an incumbent.”

For the project to begin, there are two constitutional amendments that need to be considered. Amendment # 5 (Term) and Amendment # 6 (Congress) voted for in past elections as and say that “districts cannot be drawn in a way that diminishes the ability of minorities to elect Representatives of their choice”. These two amendments were prompted by Fair Districts Now, and requite districts that, where possible, be continuous and compact, taking into account the existing municipal boundaries. These amendments are being challenged by Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R) and Corrine Brown (D), who believe that they violate the Voting Rights Act and “represents an impermissible ef-

fort by Florida to limit the discretion directly delegated by the United States Constitution to the Florida Legislature.” They filed suit on November 3, 2010.

Once the redistricting committees were formed in the House and the Senate, a series of public meetings to hear the views of minorities. There were 26 hearings, the last six occurred between Monday August 15 and Thursday 18.

The cities chosen were Stuart, Boca Raton, Davie, Miami,South Miami and Key West.

a redistribución de distritos electorales se refiere al proceso mediante el cual los datos del Censo se usan para distribuir equitativamente la población de un estado. Este proceso afecta a los distritos en todos los níveles de gobierno desde juntas escolares locales y ayuntamientos hasta las Legislaturas Estatales y la Cámara de Representantes.

Florida ganó dos escaños en el Congreso después del Censo de 2010. La población del estado aumentó en 2,8 millones de habitantes(17,6 %).

De acuerdo con el Artículo III, Secciones 20 y 21 de la Constitución del Estado de Florida: “Ningún plan de distribución del distrito (o individual) será elaborado con la

intención de favorecer o desfavorecer a un partido político o un titular”.

Para la puesta de marcha de este proyecto se tendrán que tener en cuenta dos enmiendas constitucionales, Enmienda #5 (Legislatura) y Enmienda #6 (Congreso), votadas en las pasadas elecciones y que manifiestan que “Los distritos no pueden establecerse en un manera que disminuya la capacidad de las minorías a elegir a los representantes de su elección.

The Florida House is using taxpayer money to attack and invalidate a provision of our state constitution that was supported by 63% of Florida voters. It is spending our money to join a lawsuit (filed by Representatives Brown and Diaz Balart) asking the court to strike Amendment 6 from the Florida Constitution. Secretary of State Kurt Browning is the defendant in that case. So Florida taxpayers are now paying to sue and defend the same lawsuit.

All of this money is being spent while teachers are being fired, social services are being cut, and not a single job is being created. Yet, the House and Senate have set aside upwards of $30 million to avoid the Fair Districts standards and promote their version of a redistricting plan.

Gastaron 30 horas de reuniones del comité en 2009 y 2010 tratando infructuosamente de encontrar errores en las enmiendas con los abogados de la firma de ex presidente de Cannon, al cual se le pagó $ 300 por hora. Ellos trataron de luchar contra él de nuevo en 2010 argumentando sin éxito en los tribunales que las enmiendas deben ser eliminados del voto. Se intentó (sin éxito) para confundir a los electores mediante la colocación de la enmienda 7 en la boleta electoral con un lenguaje deliberadamente engañoso. Se convenció al Gobernador de retirar de su predecesor la autorización previa solicitud del Departamento de Justicia. Se valieron una demanda para conseguir que se vuelva a aplicar. La Cámara de la Florida está utilizando el dinero de los contribuyentes para atacar y anular una provisión de la Constitución de nuestro estado que fue apoyada por el 63% de los votantes de la Florida. Se gasta todo ese dinero mientras que a los maestros los están despidiendo, los servicios sociales se están reduciendo, y no un solo puesto de trabajo se está creando. Sin embargo, la Cámara y el Senado han destinado más de $ 30 millones para evitar los estándares de “Fair Districts Now” y promover su versión de un plan de redistribución.

Whether they feel they will be affected by the daily change of class or not it is up to each student and their expectations. For example, Diana Dominguez, a rising freshman commented that even though it will be a hassle to have to change campuses every day, she’ll try to make the best out of her first year experience. She also affirms that she will be going there every other day which will allow her to take full advantage of High School activities, electives, classes and more.

“At first I was kind of disappointed that I still had to go to my old school for the first year but it’s not really a big deal. It only affects it a little, because id technically be at my middle school, but would still be part of all the high school activities” commented Diana when asked about what she thought. She also affirmed that despite her change she was planning on joining plans and perhaps joining the National Honor Society.

In addition, the staff at Ronal Reagan has done a great job in recreating the Bison Spirit in the third floor of the South Campus. The walls are now blue, gold and green in order to make all the incoming Bison at home.

“Al comienzo estaba un poco decepcionada de tener que ir a mi escuela intermedia durante mi primer año en la preparatoria pero ya me hice a la idea, porque técnicamente estaré en mi escuela intermedia pero seré parte de todas las actividades de la preparatoria” comentó Diana acerca de lo que pensaba de este nuevo sistema. También afirmó que planea pertenecer a varias organizaciones y tal vez enrolarse en la National Honor Society (Sociedad de Honores Nacional).

he Artist Portfolio Fine Arts School opened the doors to students of all ages and levels in Doral. From drawing to painting, mixed media and sculpture, owner, state certified art teacher and Doral based award winning artist, Sara Alfaro, has crafted a unique curriculum that ignites a passion for the process of art and expertise in the media.

a Escuela de Bellas Artes “The Artist Portfolio” abrió las puertas a los estudiantes de todas las edades y níveles en Doral. Desde el dibujo a la pintura, técnica mixta y escultura, su propietaria, la maestra de arte certificada por el estado y la artista galardonada en Doral, Sara Alfaro, ha elaborado un plan de estudios único que enciende la pasión por el proceso del arte y la experiencia en los medios de comunicación.

City of Doral Police Bicycle Patrol

T

he City of Doral Police Department’s Bicycle Patrol program has many benefits. The most often mentioned are visibility and mobility. The use of bicycles instead of cars can make police officers more easily approachable. It can help build a positive relationship and trust with the citizens of Doral.

“We have experienced that Doral citizens are more likely to approach a bike patrol officer, than compared to regular patrol officer, even when outside of their vehicle,” said Doral Police Officer Noel Feliciano.

An officer on a bike is much smaller, quieter, and can go places that are not easily accessible to patrol vehicles. Bike patrol officers are better able to use all of their senses, including smell and hearing, to detect and address crime, and can be much more aware of concerns before they turn into problems. This allows officers to be proactive in fighting crime rather than reactive, which in effect optimizes community oriented policing efforts.

“Seventy percent of our police officers are Police Bicycle certified,” said Officer Feliciano.

l programa de Patrulla en bicleta del Departamento de Policía de la ciudad de Doral tiene muchos beneficios. Los más mencionados son la visibilidad y la movilidad. El uso de la bicicleta en vez de los carros puede hacer que los agentes de policía sean fácilmente accesibles. Pueden ayudar a construir una relación positiva y de confianza con los ciudadanos de Doral.

“Hemos experimentado que los ciudadanos de Doral tienen más probabilidades de acercarse a un oficial de patrulla en bicicleta, que en comparación con el oficial de una patrulla regular, aún cuando esté fuera de su vehículo”, dijo el oficial de policía de Doral, Noel Feliciano.

Un funcionario en una bicicleta, que es mucho más pequeña, más silenciosa, puede ir a lugares que no son de fácil acceso para los vehículos de patrulla. Lei Maria da Penha (11.340/2006) completou 5 anos no dia 7 de agosto de 2.011.

A lei foi criada com o objetivo de tornar mais rigorosa a pena contra quem agride mulheres, triplicando a pena para este tipo de agressão, permitindo a prisão em flagrante dos agressores a acabando com as penas pecuniárias, quando a detenção é substituída por pagamento de multa ou cestas básicas, com base no altíssimo índice de violência à mulher, principalmente dentro de casa.

Relatora do projeto que gerou a Lei na Câmara, a deputada Jandira Feghali afirmou que ainda existe resistência à aplicação da norma por parte de alguns Juízes. Para ela é necessário maior empenho do Poder Público e da sociedade para fazer com que a Lei seja efetivamente cumprida.

Algumas discussões têm sido abordadas à respeito desta lei, uma vez que, alguns Juízes chegaram a afirmar que a norma fere a Constituição Federal e a igualdade entre homens e mulheres. Desde 2007, tramita no Supremo Tribunal Federal um pedido feito pelo então presidente Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva para que a corte declare a Lei constitucional. A ação foi proposta para evitar brechas e uniformizar o atendimento da Justiça sobre a Lei. Ainda está em andamento no âmbito do Supremo Tribunal Federal a ação Declaratória de Constitucionalidade nº 19 e tem como um dos fundamentos o pedido a declaração da constitucionalidade da Lei com base no principio da igualdade.

Caso haja a validação da Lei no Supremo Tribunal Federal (STF) ela se tornará ainda mais eficiente.

Alguns Juízes tomaram sua própria atitude para adequar a Lei à constituição federal , como o Juiz Osmar Pacheco de Aguiar da cidade de Prado, no Rio Grande do Sul que aplicou a Lei garantindo segurança para um dos parceiros de um casal Homosexual com base na equidade, extendendo a aplicação e o entendimento da Lei. Referida Lei foi considerada uma das três melhores Leis do Mundo pelo Fundo de Desenvolvimento das Nações Unidas para a Mulher, a norma foi batizada em homenagem a biofarmacêutica Maria da Penha Fernandes, que ficou tetraplégica após sofrer duas tentativas de assassinato por parte de seu ex marido.

The writer of the project that became law, Jandira Feghali said, ”…resistance still exist in law enforcement by some judges. For that to be achieved it is require that we have more commitment from the part of the government as well as from society to make “ Maria da Penha Law” effectively enforced.

Some discussions have been raised about this law, since some judges even claimed that the rule is would be unconstitutional and could break the principle of equality between men and women. Since 2007 the Supreme Court has been processing a request made by ex-President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for the court to declare this law constitutional, It was filed to avoid loopholes and to standardize the care of Justice on the Law. This process is still ongoing in the Supreme Court, “Ação Declaratória de Constitucionalidade nº 19” one of the applications in this lawsuit is to declare the constitutionality of Maria da Penha Law under the principle of equality.

If there is a validation of “Maria da Penha Law” in the Supreme Court (STF) it will become even more efficient.

Some Judges have transformed the law´s understandings themselves, like Judge Osmar Pacheco de Aguiar from the city of Prado, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, who applied “Maria da Penha Law” on his decision to guarantee security for one of the partners of a gay couple, based on the equity of the act, extending the application of the law.

This Law was considered one of the top three Laws of the world by the United Nations Development Fund for Women, the name of the law was chosen in honor of biopharmaceutical Maria da Penha Fernandes, who became a quadriplegic after suffering two assassination attempts by her ex-husband.

‘One Fall,’ a powerful story about a man (Marcus Dean Fuller) who is both blessed and cursed with an unusual power, is set in the rustic Midwestern town of One Fall. The film tells the story of a man who miraculously survived a terrible fall from a spectacular 200 foothigh precipice that is the area’s major attraction. After recovering, he abruptly abandoned friends and family and disappeared without explanation. The secret he couldn’t share with them was that, while recovering, he had suddenly developed the power to heal others. Tired of running away, he returns home after a long absence and decides to use his gift - but not altruistically. If people pay him, he will cure them. Though he appears to be doing the right thing, he is doing it for all the wrong reasons, and risks driving away anyone who ever loved or trusted him. As his moral crisis peaks, he must figure out why he survived his fall, and what he is really meant to do with his life.

‘The Whale’ describes what happens when Luna, a baby orca, gets separated from his family and unexpectedly starts making contact with people along a scenic fjord called Nootka Sound. Because orcas are highly social creatures who spend their lives traveling with their pods, Luna attempts to find a surrogate family among the area residents, much to their delight. But as word spreads about Luna, people become torn between their love for the lonely young whale and fears that human contact might harm him. Luna’s saga is seen through the eyes of the colorful characters who live and work along the Sound and who fall in love with the whale -- including a cook on an old freighter, a fisheries officer conflicted by what he thinks Luna needs and what he is told to do, a grandmother who is arrested for petting Luna, and a Native American elder whose tribe believes Luna is the reincarnation of a chief. The film also describes how Parfit and Chisholm, who first went to Nootka Sound on assignment for Smithsonian, grow so concerned about Luna’s fate that they get involved in trying to help him, crossing the traditional line between journalist and subject and becoming characters in the very story they are telling. Their efforts to find ways to safely give Luna the attention he seems so determined to get are a major part of the film’s climax.

I

t all began in 1996 when a small little boy had a big dream. Jazz Artist, Composer, Director, Actor, Writer and Film Composer Cristhian Andrews was born 20 years ago in Bogotá, Colombia.

At the age of six, Cristhian begged for a piano but instead received an electric keyboard. Taking private lessons at his own home for a couple of months, he learned that music was his form of expression.

At the age of nine, he arrived at The United States of America. Everyday, as he recited The Pledge of Allegiance at his elementary school, he noticed that at the end it included the word “Liberty”. The liberty to commence the pursuit of happiness. His happiness was music and not being able to buy a piano, he enrolled in the school’s music program which loaned him his first saxophone.

In 2005 and 2006 he was selected to perform with the Superintendent’s Honors Jazz Band. In 2007 he received multiple superior ratings at the Florida Bandmasters Association Solo & Ensemble Assessment.

One of his very influential teachers, Alfred de la Rosa, saw in him the potential, ambition and discipline that no other student had, and made him buy him a saxophone for which Cristhian could practice on throughout the summers. Not only was Alfred a giant push for Cristhian’s success, but “was the only person besides my mother that inspired me to be a better human being. To be humble, be empathetic and to be a diligent worker.

Besides being a charming guy, he taught me an abundant amount of musicality too” he claims.

The Jeanette Russell Jazz Gold Coast Competition described Cristhian as“...a player with fervid energy” and since then garnered numerous awards that showcase his abilities both as a composer and as a performer on tenor and alto saxophones. Andrews was selected by the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz in Los Angeles, California as one of the best high school jazz musicians of the country and selected him as a “Jazz Star of Tomorrow” at the reception of the 2009 Gold Coast Jazz Society Foundation for Jazz. In 2007 and 2008, Cristhian won the Jeanette Russell Gold Coast Jazz Scholarship Competition. After entering his high school days at New World School of the Arts in Downtown Miami, his second most influential teacher, Jim Gasior, was the one that gave him the chance to be a part of one of the most talented group of individuals in the state. “Not only did he push me like a slave working for Hitler, but this man, this Godly man, was the perfect strict father that any kid would want. And I learned so

much about life, and music and life and everything in between that I am extremely grateful to God for putting him on my path” Cristhian says.

He performed with NWSA Combo at IAJE (International Association for Jazz Education) Conferences in Toronto, Canada. Along the same year, he performed at the Savannah Music Festival in Savannah, Georgia with award-winning NWSA Jazz Ensemble. In addition, he was also a member of the prestigious and nation renowned 2009 Jazz Band of America in Indiana, Indianapolis in which he was selected as the two best tenor saxophonists of the country.

Andrews was also a finalist of the Gibson/Baldwin GRAMMYJazz Ensemble, 2008/2009 Florida Bandmasters Association All-State Jazz Festival, and was one of the few saxophonists to notably perform at the 2009 Music Series Opening at The White House in Washington, D.C. under the direction of the First Lady Mrs. Michelle Obama. Cristhian has appeared in CNN and NBC TV Channels alongside the Marsalis family, including the illustrious Wynton Marsalis and categorized Cristhian as one of the 30 best jazz musicians in America.

Andrews has also been awarded prestigious honorable soloist awards by the Jazz at Lincoln Center: Essentially Ellington Competition in 2009. Cristhian has had the privilege to tour Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with jazz great Antonio Hart and vocalist Lisa Henry. He has also had the honor to perform at some of the worlds’ greatest stages, including Savannah Music Festival, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Avery Fisher Hall, The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Clowes Memorial Hall, Monterey Jazz Festival, Carnival Center for the Performing Arts (now Arsht Center), Gusman Concert Hall, Miami Arena, The Jazz Gallery, Dizzy’s Coca Cola, Smalls, Fat Cat, 55th Bar, The Globe, Upstairs at the Van Dyke, University of Miami Clarke Recital Hall, Biltmore Hall, and Gables Stage to name a few.

Aside from his musical career, Cristhian always had

the passion to tell stories. Using his vivid imagination when he was a little boy, he would write, recite and act from memory all the Disney’s movies, including his kid favorite “The Lion King”. Not only does he tell stories through the voice of the saxophone, but he recently made his Theatrical Off-Broadway Directing, Acting and Writing debut in New York City’s famous Times Square with a play entitled “Destination: Perseverance” which tells the love story of struggling journalists in the midst of the 9/11 attacks in New York City. His Broadway Acting debut came with a play entitled “Christmas Around The World” at the Mark Hellinger playing a role of a short-tempered Christian teenager. Other small Film/TV roles include Paramount Pictures “Twylight Zones” with Director David Chase, Burn Notice along side with the glamorous Gabrielle Anwar, Bored to Death with Zach Galifianakis, Director’s Cut with Director Elana Mugdan and his own short and feature films.

Now Andrews is on the first phase of pre-production for his own 35 min short film as he will be directing, producing, writing and acting in it. It tells the inspired by true events story about a British foster care cerebral palsy boy with a love for piano.

In closing terms, these are the young artistic Hispanic talents that should be supported and recognized and are an example to our up-and-coming youth. Cristhian states “Never ever, ever take a no for an answer. It is unreal for a person to walk into a room, flip a switch, and light to come on, but unfortunately Thomas Edison didn’t think so. It is unreal to bend metal together into a ball and fly people to other parts of the world, but unfortunately, the Wright Brothers didn’t think so, it is unreal to think that anybody in any part of the world could easily communicate and have access to a ton of encyclopedic info in a beige plastic box, but unfortunately Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg didn’t think so.

People always want to tell you you can’t do something because they can’t do it themselves therefore if you want something go get it. Period. ”

u carrera musical profesional se inició en Nueva York con la famosa “Charanga 76” como vocalistas y co-fundadores de la banda por los años setenta, llevando su ritmo a todas las grandes ciudades latinas de Estados Unidos.

En 1980, deciden separarse de la banda y Hansel y Raúl deciden formar un dúo con una fusión de ritmos caribeños que hasta el día de hoy, contagia a todos.

Sus canciones “María Teresa y Danilo”, “Con la lengua afuera” y “Ella” se han convertido en himnos y estrellas internacionales, contagiando su ritmo en España, Francia, Tokio, todo el Continente Americano y mas… por mas de 33 años.

Estos ganadores de varios Grammys, discos de oro y de platino, decidieron ofrecerme unos minutos para una entrevista durante su visita a Doral, en la que quedo el sabor de seguir compartiendo muchas mas anécdotas con ellos…

“Nuestra música se oye en las radios de Cuba, desde aproximadamente los años setenta, desde la época que formamos parte de la Charánga y con una emisora famosa de aquella época llamada Super Q, en donde comienza nuestra carrera artística”.

Cuando se le pregunto que los diferenciaba a ellos de otros cantantes, enseguida nos expresaron que la nostalgia y los sentimientos de ellos son interpretados, con las raíces de sus pueblos, con alegría y fiesta. Tal como caracteriza a su pueblo…

“Nuestro orgullo es que nos destacamos en hacer música tradicional cubana, y con el orgullo de ser una de las pocas que hay en la actualidad: ya ni siquiera en Cuba, existe este ritmo”. Aunque si nos comentaron que aprecian mucho a Oscar De León por que mantiene el mismo género.

Su ultima producción “Hansel y Raul 33” salió hace un año pero sigue manteniendo su misma esencia, “Los resultados han sido positivos gracias al tema “El Muñequito”… Aunque, en este momento también se está escuchando “Hay cariño o no hay cariño” en las principales emisoras de radio latinas.

Durante la entrevista, nos comentaron de algunos recuerdos y anécdotas durante su carrera artística… “Mi impresión mas relevante fue cuando conocí a Celia Cruz… en aquel entonces nuestro manager era José Curvelo y recuerdo que entrando a un restaurante en New York, Curvelo nos presenta a Celia y ella grita “Son Cubanos”.

Al igual que gratos momentos cuando conocieron al maestro Pacheco, a Tito Puente y a Franck Sinatra y cuando cantaron por primera vez en el Madison Square Garden de New York.

Fiore wants a reason to smile

Marine who served in Afghanistan is on a new mission: helping kids in South Asia. In September, Winston Fiore will begin a 5,000 mile hike to raise funds to help children born with a cleft palate.

Winston said he’s raising money for the International Children’s Surgical Foundation (ICSF).

Sgt Fiore, from Indiana, has been riding his motorcycle across the country speaking to different groups about the hike he calls the “Smile Trek.” And one of his many stops included various cities across South Florida, including a visit to Doral. Fiore met with The Rotary Club of Doral, which raised a total of $2,000 for Smile Trek Friday, Augusto 12, in the afternoon.

“Cleft (deformity) is a common birth defect, but it can be corrected with a very short, simple surgery,” he said. “Each surgery only takes a couple hours time and for $240, a child’s life can be changed ” Fiore said at a luncheon for members of the Rotary Club of Doral.

His goal is to raise $25,000 to fund facial-reconstruction surgeries needed to repair cleft lips and palates in developing countries.

Fiore, 26, decided that he wanted to see the world and learn other cultures while his Marine unit was deployed to Senegal, in West Africa, in 2007, and there he got the idea for the Smile Treck.

Because he spoke French, he said, he became the “impromptu interpreter” between his unit and the Senegalese troops they were training. But something happened.

“I got to interact with the locals,” he said. “I began watching their customs.”

Seeing extreme poverty inspired him to help children in the developing world. So after hearing about ICSF, Fiore realized a simple surgery could give kids with little else: a reason to smile.

Fiore said most of his fundraising takes place through presentations he is making at local Rotary clubs along his route.

Before leaving to Southeast Asia, he first thought, he’ll finish the motorcycle trip, winding up in his hometown of Bloomington, Ind., before leaving to Singapore.

All the money Fiore raises goes directly to the ICSF, he said, Donors contribute through a link on his website, smiletrek.org; he receives a notification that a donation has been received and acknowledges that with a thank-you on his site.

n infante de marina que sirvió en Afganistán está ahora sobre una nueva misión: ayudar a los niños en el sur de Asia. En septiembre, Winston Fiore iniciará una caminata de 5.000 millas para recaudar fondos para ayudar a los niños nacidos con paladar hendido.

Winston Fiore dijo que está recaudando dinero para la Fundación Internacional de Cirugía para la Infancia (ICSF - International Children’s Surgical Foundation).

Breakfast is literally breaking the fast that your body is in from the night before. Consuming an early snack increases the metabolic rate and provides the starting fuel for the day. When people skip breakfast, their bodies tend to hold onto the following meal as long as possible instead of burning it right away, therefore depositing more fat in their bodies. In addition, those who skip breakfast tend to consume more food than usual in the following meal and tend to snack on high calorie foods to avoid hunger.

Now that our kids are going back to school, it is important to give them every day a healthy breakfast that can provide the quantity and quality of nutrients to have energy to start their day. But how many people know what does a healthy breakfast mean? A healthy breakfast should be balanced and it should provide: 1- Whole Grains: provide complex carbohydrates for energy and dietary fiber for improved digestion. In addition, fiber helps to control blood glucose. Examples of whole grain sources include whole grain bagels or tortillas, whole grain pancakes, and whole grain cereals.

2- Low-Fat Dairy: provide calcium, necessary bones and teeth growth and maintenance. They also provide protein for cellular repair. Examples of low-fat dairy products include low-fat cheese, skim milk, and fat-free yogurt. For those who are lactose intolerance, soy milk products can be consumed.

3- Lean Proteins: choose lean meat products that are low in saturated fat, such as turkey or white-chicken meat. Alternatives include meat replacements, such as tofu or seitan.

4- Fruits and Vegetables: add vitamins and minerals for optimal health.

They can be added to smoothies or mixed in yogurt or cereal.

5- Egg Whites: are a good source of protein, without adding saturated fat and cholesterol to your meals Below you can find some breakfast options for the first week of school… try them and provide the energy that your kids needs to perform good at school!

Algunos se enfrentan a un colegio nuevo o amistades nuevas, o tal vez a profesores nuevos, cualquiera que sea el caso, el acompañamiento que tú como padre le des, va a ser muy valioso para tu hijo a la hora de disminuir los síntomas negativos de estrés o angustia que este inicio escolar pueda traer.

Cada niño irá descubriendo en su propio y muy personal proceso de ensayo y error, cuál es el ambiente que mejor favorece su concentración.

• Mantén una actitud positiva: Tu mismo como padre ten una actitud positiva hacia este reinicio escolar, ten presente que ellos perciben esta actitud y probablemente esa misma actitud que tu muestra será tomada por ellos.

• Incentiva una comunicación abierta con tu hijo: Aunque esto debe ser una práctica continua, va a hacer especialmente importante que durante este proceso de reinicio escolar, tu hijo y tu tengan una comunicación fluida. Permítele que te exprese sus sentimientos hacia esta nueva etapa, en el caso de aquellos niños que no hablan mucho, puedes intentar haciéndole algunas preguntas que lo ayuden a hablar de sus sentimientos.

n arrhythmia is an abnormal heart rhythm usually caused by an electrical “short circuit” in the heart. The heart normally beats in a consistent pattern, but an arrhythmia can make it beat too slowly, too quickly, or irregularly. This can lead to a variety of symptoms, including fatigue, dizziness, and chest pain.

The heart has its own conduction system, or electrical system, that sends electrical signals around the heart, telling it when to contract and pump blood throughout the body. However, sometimes the electrical signals flowing through the heart don’t “communicate” properly with the heart muscle, and the heart can start beating in an abnormal pattern — an arrhythmia.

Arrhythmias can be temporary or permanent. They can be caused by several things, but can also occur for no apparent reason. Arrhythmias can be congenital.

Other causes of arrhythmias include chemical imbalances in the blood, infections, or other diseases that cause irritation or inflammation of the heart, medications (prescription or over-the-counter), and injuries to the heart from chest trauma or heart surgery. Other factors such as illegal drugs, alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, stress, and some herbal remedies also can cause arrhythmias.

Because arrhythmias can cause the heart to beat less effectively, blood flow to the brain and to the rest of the body can be interrupted. If the heart is beating too fast, its chambers can’t fill with the proper amount of blood.

If it’s beating too slowly or irregularly, the proper amount of blood can’t be pumped out to the body.

If the body doesn’t get the supply of blood it needs to run smoothly, these symptoms can occur: dizziness, fatigue, lightheadedness, weakness, palpitations, shortness of breath, chest pain, and fainting.

Many arrhythmias don’t require treatment; however, some can pose a health problem and need to be evaluated and treated by a doctor.

If an arrhythmia is suspected, the doctor will probably recommend an electrocardiogram (EKG) to measures the heart’s electrical activity. There is nothing painful about an EKG — a series of electrodes (small metal tabs) are fixed to the skin with sticky papers, and the information obtained about the electrical activity of your heart is transferred to a computer, where it’s then interpreted and drawn as a graph.

When it comes to eating, I have to admit that it is pleasure that drives my decision-making. As soon as I get hungry or know that mealtime is approaching, I start imagining what I would like to eat, putting aside the types of foods that would be suitable to preserve my fragile health.

I have tried all sorts of tricks to avoid eating what harms me, from neurolinguistic programming to self-rewards, but in the end, an amnesic-like state of mind takes control and I forget about all of my good intentions and resolutions, surrendering to the temptation of the forbidden fruit.

Because of this situation, I have decided to invert the polarity of my motivations, and from now on, my decisions will be conditioned by fear and not by pleasure.

I am willing to live under the regime of fear, frightened by the possible consequences of my bad eating habits. Each time I am about to eat unhealthy foods, I will remind myself of the horrible consequences that diabetes may unleash on my body: amputations, glaucoma, impotence, heart attacks and death itself.

I hope this reversed motivation, based on the fear of losing all that is valuable to me, will work better than the expectation of a pleasant reward. Fear will prevail over pleasure, so that in the long run, I can enjoy a healthy life.

This reminds me what recently happened with cigarette packages, now forced to display horrendous pictures of people and organs consumed by cancer.

This horrible reminder is necessary due to the lack of memory we have. We are busy focusing on the immediate, the transitory, and the trivial, putting aside what is really important in our lives.

The search for instant gratification is consuming us and is making us forget that we must value what we really have, such as our good health, our loved ones, and life itself.

I am willing to make an effort to eat what I should to extend my life on good terms. I will do it for everything I value and everything that is important to me because I want to live a good life with diabetes.

sencialmente, nuestras vidas están condicionadas por dos motivadores: el miedo y el placer. Todo lo que hacemos, pensamos o sentimos está determinado por alguna de estas dos causales. No importa si los reconocemos o no, ellos siempre están allí para conducir nuestras vidas.

A la hora de comer, reconozco que el placer es el que determina mis decisiones. Apenas me da hambre o se aproxima la hora de la comida, me pongo a imaginarme lo que me gustaría comer, dejando de lado lo que en realidad me conviene comer para poder preservar mi frágil salud.

He tratado toda suerte de trucos para evitar comer lo que me hace daño, desde la programación neurolingüística hasta las auto-premiaciones, pero a fin de cuentas, una especie de estado amnésico se apodera de mi pensamiento y me olvido de todos los buenos propósitos y resoluciones, sucumbiendo ante la tentación del fruto prohibido.

Debido a esta situación he decidido invertir la polaridad de mis motivaciones y, de ahora en adelante, mis decisiones estarán condicionadas por el miedo y no por el placer.

Estoy dispuesto a someterme a vivir bajo un régimen de miedo, atemorizado por las posibles consecuencias de mis malas elecciones alimentarias. Cada vez que vaya a comer lo indebido, me recordaré a mí mismo las horribles consecuencias de la diabetes sobre mi cuerpo: amputaciones, glaucoma, impotencia, infartos y hasta la misma muerte.

Confío en que esta motivación a la inversa, fundamentada en el miedo a perder todo lo que es valioso para mí, funcione mejor que la expectativa a una recompensa placentera.

El miedo se impondrá al placer para que a largo plazo pueda disfrutar de mi vida saludablemente.

Esto me recuerda lo sucedido recientemente con los empaques de cigarrillos que ahora muestran horripilantes imágenes de personas y órganos consumidos por el cáncer.

Este horrible recordatorio se hace necesario dada la escasa memoria que tenemos. Estamos ocupados de lo inmediato, de lo transitorio e intrascendente y hemos venido dejando de lado lo que en realidad es importante para nuestras vidas.

La búsqueda de la gratificación inmediata nos consume y nos lleva a olvidar que debemos valorar lo que en realidad poseemos, tal como nuestra salud, nuestros afectos y nuestra propia vida.

Yo estoy dispuesto a hacer el esfuerzo de comer lo que debo para prolongar mi vida en buenos términos. Lo haré por todo lo que valoro y que es importante para mí porque quiero vivir una buena vida con diabetes.

pplications such as Foursquare, Gowalla and Facebook Check in, are among the new releases of this year to check, and announce you’ve arrived somewhere, whether a restaurant, movies or some public place and describe what you’re doing.

These applications run on a closed network of friends, and some are completely free ... but, what’s so good about checking in, in some places?

As if the scope of the technology would follow your footsteps, a number of advantages and rewards when you use these applications .

Among the advantages to announce your arrival at a facility is that many of these places welcome you with a gift, for your first visit or the next. It also lets you view restaurant recommendations from other users who have checked in, and some stores offer discounts on your purchases, with just doing a “Check in”.

For the other side of the coin, the owners of the commercial places also receive certain benefits, as this is a viral free advertisement for them, the customer is announcing to it’s friends were he is and it spreads to more followers of the users using Facebook and Twitter, as well as appearing in a list of recommended sites for users who are in the area.

Who checks in?

One in five owners of smartphones use screening services, according to research firm ComScore.

ComScore found in a study that approximately 16.7 million cellular subscribers in the U.S. use their phones to check in March 2011, representing approximately 17.6% of users of smartphones.

Facebook is the most popular Places check service.

While Gowalla and Foursquare are applications presented as a game that gives you points for each place you check into, and you can compete with your friends who has more points.

So if you want, get a free dessert at your favorite restaurant or get a 20% on a purchase, simply register and download these applications to check in and start enjoying the benefits that technology offers.

What is the impact of the unemployment on our economy?

We need to add that, the Federal government expects between 200,000 and 700,000 job losses in 2011 as a result of budget cuts. These losses are in the areas of labor, health, education, transportation, farming and job training. The expected Federal job losses will wipe out part of the 2.0 million jobs, supposedly created by the policies implemented by this administration with the Economic Stimulus Package in 2009.

In the case of the states, many have deficits varying from $200 Billion to $700 Billion, and higher in some cases. From the 50 states, 31 are starting this fiscal year with large deficits. Many cities are confronting the same dilemma, and an example is the City of Miami Dade with a $400 M deficit.

Some economists are estimating that, if our Federal government fails to control spending and create new incentives for small businesses, our economy will see an unemployment rate of 9.5% or higher by the end of 2011, and into 2012. High unemployment has a tremendous impact on the revenues of the Federal government since

unemployed people do not pay federal taxes or social security. High unemployment is also affecting the social security funds with less workers contributing and more people reaching the age of retirement. Some Federal officials are saying that the Social Security Funds will run out of money in 2017. We need JOBS, JOBS and MORE JOBS to get our economy going.

In the private sector, Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO), the largest networking-equipment company, announced on Monday, July 18, that it will cut 6,500 workers, about 9% of its worldwide workforce, and 2,200 workers are taking voluntary early retirement. It is not known how many jobs will be eliminated in the United States. Another company eliminating near 10,000 jobs is Borders Book Stores. Borders announced that it is closings all the book stores after failing to find a buyer for the business. In Florida, NASA has eliminated thousands of jobs in the last three years by terminating the space program. In the next few weeks, NASA will eliminate many of the remaining 6,000 jobs at the Space Center creating more unemployment. On a bright note, some companies are planning to add jobs; but, the immediate job situation is uncertain for many Americans.

To further complicate matters for our economy, on Friday, August 5, Standard & Poor’s Credit Rating Agency downgraded the U.S. credit rating from AAA to AA+. This is the first time in the history of the U.S. economy that the credit rating has been lower. This will have an impact on the interest rate banks will be charging for home mortgages, car loans and credit cards.

Standard and Poor’s based their decision on the inability of the Federal government to reduce the deficit by $4.0 Trillion in the next 10 years.

Americans of Faith, we hope that our political leaders in Washington can get their act together to find ways to reduce the federal budget and create meaningful economic policies to help the private sector to expand and create job. As is it, we are wasting time for the unemployed Americans struggling to reach their AMERICAN DREAM! And as always, we are closing with a biblical message from the book of Matthew 7:7-8, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be open to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who he seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be open.”

We need to have faith, and not lose HOPE. We need to redouble our faith that the United States of American will overcome the present economic crisis and that every unemployed American can find a job shortly. But, we need to continue praying for our leaders in Washington to find common ground solving the economic problems facing our nation and become strong again. We are “One Nation under God and indivisible” and we will remain so because we are a nation with resilient people.

I

n an effort to bring issues of interest to our readers, we have prepared this PART II to cover the impact of the unemployment on our economy. This topic is a very important indicator on how our economy is performing in the present economic environment.

The latest July unemployment report posted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday, August 5, 2011 shows a drop on the unemployment from 9.2% to 9.1%. In July the economy created 147,000 new jobs. This is an improvement but there are still several indicators that show a weak economy, including a GDP drop to 1.3% for the second quarter of 2011. Assuming that the economy can create 250,000 jobs per month, the unemployment rate can be brought down to 8.0% by Election Day 2012. This will be an ambitious goal to achieve having so many variables affecting our economy.

Looking at the annual unemployment rates from previous years, we also learned that the unemployment rate in 2008 was 5.8%, in 2009, 9.3% and in 2010, 9.6%. By looking at the following table with the Average Monthly and Annual Unemployment Rates we can see two consecutive years with unemployment rates over 9.0% and 2011 is not far behind.

An unemployment rate of 9.0% and higher in 2011 would make it three consecutive years of high unemployment and unprecedented for our economy. These numbers demonstrate that, in spite of the $800 Billion Economic Stimulus Package approved by Congress and signed into law

by President Obama in early 2009, our economy has not been able to turn around the unemployment to levels prior 2008. After looking at this table, we can ask, WHAT ARE THE POLITICAL LEADERS DOING IN WASHINGTON TO IMPROVE THE EMPLOYMENT SITUATION?

hether you’ve recently adopted a pet or you’re considering it, one of the most important health decisions you’ll make is to spay or neuter your cat or dog. Spaying—removing the ovaries and uterus of a female pet—is a veterinary procedure that requires minimal hospitalization and offers lifelong health benefits. Neutering—removing the testicles of your male dog or cat—will vastly improve your pet’s behavior and keep him close to home.

Not convinced yet? Check a list of the top 10 reasons to spay or neuter your pet!

1. Your female pet will live a longer, healthier life. Spaying helps prevent uterine infections and breast cancer, which is fatal in about 50 percent of dogs and 90 percent of cats. Spaying your pet before her first heat offers the best protection from these diseases.

2. Neutering provides major health benefits for your male. Besides preventing unwanted litters, neutering your male companion prevents testicular cancer, if done before six months of age.

3. Your spayed female won’t go into heat. While cycles can vary, female felines usually go into heat four to five days every three weeks during breeding season. In an effort to advertise for mates, they’ll yowl and urinate more frequently—sometimes all over the house!

4. Your male dog won’t want to roam away from home. An intact male will do just about anything to find a mate. That includes digging his way under the fence and making like Houdini to escape from the house.

5. Your neutered male will be much better behaved. Neutered cats and dogs focus their attention on their human families. On the other hand, unneutered dogs and cats may mark their territory by spraying strong-smelling urine all over the house.

6. Spaying or neutering will NOT make your pet fat. Lack of exercise and overfeeding will cause your pet to pack on the extra pounds—not neutering. Your pet will remain fit and trim as long as you continue to provide exercise and monitor food intake.

7. It is highly cost-effective.

8. Spaying and neutering your pet is good for the community. Stray animals pose a real problem in many parts of the country. They can prey on wildlife, cause car accidents, damage the local fauna and frighten children. Spaying and neutering packs a powerful punch in reducing the number of animals on the streets.

9. Your pet doesn’t need to have a litter for your children to learn about the miracle of birth. Letting your pet produce offspring you have no intention of keeping is not a good lesson for your children—especially when so many unwanted animals end up in shelters.

10. Spaying and neutering helps fight pet overpopulation. Every year, millions of cats and dogs of all ages and breeds are euthanized or suffer as strays. These high numbers are the result of unplanned litters that could have been prevented by spaying or neutering.

5. Su macho castrado se comportará de mejor manera. Los perros y gatos castrados enfocan su atención en sus familias humanas. Por otro lado, los gatos y perros no castrados pueden marcar su territorio rociando orina de fuerte olor por toda la casa.

6. La esterilización o castración NO engordará a su mascota. La falta de ejercicio y la demasiada comida hará que su mascota aumente libras extras, más no la castración. Su mascota permanecerá en forma y reluciente mientras continúe proporcionándole ejercicio y controlando el consumo de comida.

7. Es muy económico.

8. Esterilizar y castrar a su mascota es bueno para la comunidad. Los animales callejeros presentan un problema real en varias partes del país. Pueden vivir de la vida salvaje, causar accidentes de carros, dañar la fauna local y espantar a los niños. La esterilización y castración es un arma poderosa para reducir el número de animales en las calles.

9. Su mascota no necesita tener una cría para que sus hijos aprendan sobre el milagro de la vida. Permitir que su mascota tenga crías cuando usted no tiene intensión de criarlas no es una buena lección para sus hijos, en especial cuando demasiados animales no deseados terminan en los refugios 10. Ayuda con el exceso de población de mascotas. Cada año millones de gatos y perros de todas las edades y razas son sometidos a la eutanasia o sufren como animales callejeros. Estos altos números son el resultado de las crías no planificadas que pudieron haber sido prevenidas por la esterilización o castración.

C

arolina Villaró nació en Carolina del Norte hace 27 años, de padres venezolanos y un corazón muy latino, vivió en Estados Unido hasta los 5 años, época en que su familia decidió volver a Venezuela. Su pasión fue siempre el baile y comenzó a estudiar Jazz y Flamenco a los 8 años.

Cuando tenia 17 se unió al boom de las innovaciones entre baile y ejercicio, lo que en Venezuela comenzaron a llamar “Bailoterapia” y tomo varios talleres hasta certificarse como profesora de esa especialidad. Luego de tres años de duro trabajo, en el cual logro asimilar a su arte bailes de salsa, merengue y otros ritmos latinos, decidió volver a su país de nacimiento y probar suerte, como inmigrante orgullosa de su origen latino. Inicialmente tuvo la oportunidad de trabajar como maestra de Zumba, que es muy similar a Bailoterapia , pero adaptando su propio estilo.

Siendo una persona cuya rutina esta asociada al estudio, al baile y al gimnasio, decidió tomar nuevos talleres y cursos de: “Kick Boxing”,” Steps”, “Aquarobics”, “Body Sculpting” y Silver Adults Fitness” y por lo cual es ya una entrenadora muy conocida y apreciada. Pero Carolina siempre aspira a hacer mas, acaba de inaugurar su propia academia de baile CV RITMOS, aquí en el Doral, en donde se ofrecen clases de Bailoterapia, Zumba, Kick Boxing, Baile Flamenco, Body Sculping, Hip Hop, Silver adults Fitness, clases para personas especiales y próximamente Strip Dance.

Como todos los lectores ya deben saber, este periódico esta abocado a trabajar por la comunidad, a informarla y a apoyar a todos aquellos individuos que comparten esta noble causa. Carolina es una persona que a parte de tener un gran talento y ser muy trabajadora, comparte sin dudar nunca su tiempo para colaborar con su gente.

Durante 3 años ha sido integrante del conjunto de baile que ha animado los eventos de la Independencia de Venezuela. También, y en los horarios mas complicados, ha llevado sus clases al evento Doral Relay of Life (por tres años seguidos). Ha participado en eventos “Teacher Appreciation”, “Career Day” en algunas escuelas del Doral y ha conducido clínicas para niños de esas escuelas. Para los 10 años del Doral Relay of Life y a pedido del director de ese evento, Sr. Gerardo Reyes, Carolina ya ha formado uno de los 80 equipos que van a participar y lo hará como líder, ya que esa causa es una de las que mas admira.

En cuanto a su labor como bailarina, fue parte del video de “Enio y José Ignacio” (Ex integrantes de Bacano y Tecupae), bailarina y animadora de “Cuero Trancado”, bailarina en “Premios Juventud” y ahora (y motivo de esta nota), parte del gran video de Jeancarlos , Pitbull y el Cata, que próximamente veremos en el mercado y del que mucho se va a hablar.

Carolina es también estudiante de educación en Miami Dade Community College, es un ser humano que ve la vida con mucho optimismo y también con mucho agradecimiento. Le preguntamos cual fue el motivo de hacer una academia como CV Ritmos y en el Doral y nos dijo que: “Era un sueño que tenia hace mucho tiempo, alternar baile con ejercicio, cuidar la salud, ofrecer un ambiente de relajamiento y sobre todo hacer el máximo esfuerzo posible para hacer feliz a la gente. Estuvimos en la inauguración y nuevamente fuimos testigos del gran trabajo de esta joven venezolana americana, que quiere darle todo a su comunidad y que lo hace con un corazón muy grande. Arranca la temporada de los Broncos

L

a enorme vitalidad y energía que tienen los jóvenes son bien canalizadas en un deporte que exige disciplina, constancia, vitalidad, obediencia y, sobre todo, trabajo en equipo: el fútbol americano.

Por ello, el sábado 21 de agosto, Doral Broncos realizó la ceremonia de inicio de la temporada 2011 en el Doral Meadow Park.

Dentro de un ambiente totalmente deportivo, jugadores, entrenadores y padres de todas las categorías se unieron con la presencia de distinguidas personalidades de la ciudad, como el Alcalde Bermúdez y todos los concejales, al igual que el Superintendente de Parques, Jesús Palacios, para disfrutar de esa gran apertura al estilo de los grandes campeones, marcada por una excelente organización y disciplina, y que augura una temporada nuevamente exitosa.

Son más de 300 niños los que integran el equipo de futbol americano “Doral Broncos” en diferentes categorías: Categoría Pee Wee ó de 65 lbs. con edades de 5 a 6 años Categoría de 90 lbs. con edades de 8 a 10 años Categoría de 105 lbs. con edades de 9 a 11 años Categoría de 120 lbs. con edades de 10 a 12 años

Categoría de 135 lbs. con edades de 11 a 13 años En el mismo día de la apertura, se realizaron varios juegos con donde todos los espectadores pudieron disfrutar.

En la categoría de 120 lbs. se obtuvo la primera victoria contra los “Key Biscayne Key Rats” obteniendo una gloriosa victoria de 8 a 6 tras ser un juego muy reñido… Además con la emoción de llegar a la primera mitad del juego con un empate y faltando solo 4 minutos para la culminación de la segunda mitad, un touchdown logró la diferencia!

El segundo juego fue de la categoría de 65 lbs. donde se perdió 28 a 13, al igual que en la categoría de 90 lbs. perdiendo 7 a 0. Por otro lado, en la categoría de 105 lbs., el equipo logró vencer 7 a 2, y en la categoría de 135 lbs. verdaderamente, los muchachos se esmeraron en ganar 28 a 0.

Doral Broncos está considerado uno de los entretenimientos deportivos mas antiguos de la Ciudad, inclusive destaquemos que ya se practicaba antes que de que Doral se convirtiera en ciudad.

Isabella Paez participó en III Campeonato Mundial Juvenil de Natación

os residentes de Doral están hoy muy orgullosos de la joven nadadora Isabella Páez y los grandes triunfos conseguidos el verano pasado en el 3er Campeonato Mundial Juvenil de Natación por la Federación Internacional de Natación (FINA) celebrado en Lima, Perú del 16 al 21 de agosto, en la que participaron mas de 650 nadadores provenientes de 70 países.

Isabella Páez, tiene 15 años y es una estudiante de 10mo grado en la escuela superior en el Ronald Reagan Doral Senior High School, tiene 15 años y es una atleta muy entusiasta y comprometida con su deporte preferido: la natación... Ella fue a Lima, Perú, representando a su país de origen, Venezuela, y obtuvo un muy importante 12vo lugar en la competencia 200 metros mariposa femenino, con las siguientes puntuaciones: Name Paez, Isabella R: +0.93 33.27

he residents of Doral are very proud of the young swimmer Isabella Paez and the great achievements she did last summer at the 3rd FINA World Junior Swimming Championship held at Lima Peru on August 16 to 21, in which participated over 650 swimmers from 70 countries.

Isabella Paez is a sophomore student at Ronald Reagan Doral Senior High; she is 15 years old and a very enthusiastic and committed athlete, while excellent student.

En esta competencia, el récord mundial estuvo en manos de Liu Zige, de China con un tiempo de 2:01, aunque la ganadora en Lima, Perú fue Sorribes Ignacio , de España, y con 2:07.087 Cabe destacar que junto a Isabella, tambien participaron otros dos jóvenes nadadores residentes de Doral, como lo son Juan Sequera y Arianna Noya.

Por otro lado, Isabella Pérez pudo apuntarse un tiempo de 1:03.64 en los 100 metros mariposa para terminar en el puesto 21 de la competición.

En el evento de los 400 metros libres, Juan Sequera logro 4:34.64 Isabella es la hija orgullosa de Carlos Páez y Alexandra Cobo, ambos corredores y excelentes atletas. Son el gran apoyo de su hija y padres orgullosos también, ellos siempre están detrás de sus horarios, entrenamientos, alimentación, etc. y son su principal bastón.

No tenemos duda de que Isabella llegará muy lejos y auguramos un gran éxito en este maravilloso deporte, a seguir trabajando duro!

In this competition the World Record is held by Liu Zige, from China and is: 2 minutes, 01 sec .081, even though the winner in Lima Peru was Sorribes Ignacio, from Spain, and scored 2:07.087 Along with Isabella, one other swimmer resident of Doral participated, Juan Sequera On the other hand, Isabella Paez was able to achieve a timing of 1:03.64 in the 100 butterflies meter to finish in place 21 at the competition.

In the event of the 400 free meters, Juan Sequera achieved 4:34.64 Isabella is the proud daughter of Carlos Paez and Alexandra Cobo, both excellent runners and oustanding athletes too. As great supporters and proud parents, they are always behind schedules, trainings, food, etc.

We do not have doubt that Isabella will have more achieves and a wonderful success in this marvelous sport, keep working hard!!!

Graciela Di Croce festejó su cumpleaños al mejor estilo del Doral

l tiempo pasa para todos, lo importante es que no se note, así lo comprobó una de las argentinas mas deportistas del Doral, Graciela di Croce quien de manera apoteósica festejó llegar la mitad del camino en su ruta al centenario…..Y de que manera!!!

Se iniciaron los festejos muy temprano (8 de la mañana) con la visita y cánticos de la “Barra Brava del Boca”. (Dicen por ahí que la barra del River estaba tan concentrada en su primer partido en segunda división, que por eso no asistieron…cuidado con caer a la tercera…) A continuación se llevó a lugar un almuerzo bastante “frugal”… Bien al estilo del Sur, bifes, chorizos, morcillas y costillas… y pollo para Pilar, la jefa del Gym y para culminar, tremenda fiesta un conocido restaurante del Doral. Había 50 invitados que no pararon de comer, beber y bailar … Y aquí van los números para no perder la “cuenta”: 50 veces nos sirvieron vino, 50 veces se habló de las bondades del Citrato de Sidenafil, un solo baile duro 50 minutos, son mas de 50 fotos las que guardaran para la posteridad este recuerdo y claro, 50 veces los 50 invitados preguntaron cuando aparecerán en las paginas del periódico mas joven pero también mas popular del Doral…

Lo prometido es deuda, felicidades a nuestra siempre joven amiga y a Héctor por quererla tanto como la queremos nosotros, siempre es sabio conocer como se ven las cosas desde el quinto piso, ya nos contarás che!!!

l pasado 17 de agosto, el reconocido escultor colombiano, William Calvo, le hizo entrega de una pequeña escultura (Busto) al Vice Alcalde de la Ciudad de Doral, Mike Di Pietro, en muestra de reconocimiento y agradecimiento por su gran trabajo y apoyo a las Artes y Cultura de nuestra ciudad.

“Es mi manera de darle a entender mi aprecio hacia él, por ser una persona humilde, por su sencillez y la buena voluntad del trabajo que tiene como servidor público de la ciudad.

Según Calvo, nos explico que le había prometido desde hace un año dicho regalo, y que al cumplir con esta promesa, sigue firme y comprometedor con su labor y como Artista escultor.

Reagan’s annual Back to School Barbeque was held on Saturday August 20th at the school’s courtyard, following a friendly football scrimmage that morning at the field located behind the school.

The incoming students were able to walk around the school begining their search for their classes and also get to know some of the clubs available in the school. This was an event not only for the Reagan students but for everyone who wanted to show up from all ages. Students were also able to meet and ask questions to some advisors from different colleges.
