WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT FROM MY VISIT WITH THE BREAST SURGEON?
1. A detailed history of the symptoms or signs presented by the patient will be made. History of previous breast surgeries or biopsies and their pathologies (results). Family history of all types of cancer, both female and male. We determine the risk of genetic factors and whether the patient benefits from genetic testing. The possible results of these genetic tests and their implications are discussed. 2. The images and reports of the latest mammograms and/or sonomammography will be evaluated and compared with the previous ones to determine if any significant changes have occurred. On this visit it will determined if the patient needs any additional studies such as a breast MRI or breast biopsy. 3. The physical exam. This includes the entire breast, armpit, and supraclavicular area. It can detect tumors that are not seen on mammograms and/or sonomammography. Mammograms can NOT see tumors by up to 10%. 4. If we find any mass on physical examination that does not agree with what was reported on mammography/ sonomammography, at the time the finding is corroborated with a sonomammography directed at that area. Dr. Sandra E. Marrero is a subspecialist in the care, prevention and treatment of conditions that can affect the breast. In addition to possessing knowledge in genetic counseling. She did her specialty in Surgery at the Medical Sciences Campus in Puerto Rico and her subspecialty at the University of Texas. She is Board Certified by the American College of Surgeons.
