Más on point, imposible. 8

When will we be able to hug each other again? One thing I’m sure of is that hugging our friends and family is the emotional gesture we’ve all missed the most during this pandemic. There’s just no way to get around that. I’m sure, too, that the rest of humanity can’t wait to be able to hug one another. The vaccine is bringing the day closer, but we still don’t know for certain when we’ll be given the green light to hug each other without a tinge of fear. For this issue we wanted to invite journalist and writer Tatiana Pérez Rivera to share her perspective on that subject. Out of our conversation emerged the idea of including a column written by her for each issue of the magazine. We asked Tatiana to propose a name for it, and she suggested SIETE VIDAS, or SEVEN LIVES. And we loved it. It caught our attention and, as she explains, “since everything changes, and since lots of non-Puerto Ricans live in Dorado and make a new life for themselves here, since we’ve survived hurricanes, earthquakes, and even pandemics,” it seems to capture our new now. More on point, impossible. So, we “embraced” Tatiana’s idea and we’re presenting you with the first SIETE VIDAS column: Imagining hugs. In this spring edition we’re also including your favorite sections, like NOS ENCANTA and NOS ENCANTA PARA LOS CHIC@S, to continue our support of local entrepreneurs. Read DESCUBRE to discover the famous Carnaval del Plata and, in the interviews in LA 693, learn about the work of the Jane Stern Library and Finca Pastoreo. We visited the coffee shops in Dorado in LLÉVAME, and we’ve dedicated the section on LA PROLE to possible signs of mental health problems in our young children and teenagers because of COVID-19. As for how to eat seasonably, nutritionist Carla de la Torre has great tips for you in MESA Y BARRA. In ARTE Y CULTURA, we explore the art of tattooing, and in INSIGHTFUL we interview Glorianne Rivera Casanova—a conversation you won’t want to miss. And there’s more! Read every bit of it. You’re gonna love it!

More than a tourist destination, Dorado is the ideal place for visitors who want to enjoy a peaceful stay in a setting with diverse, welcoming, and supremely attractive features. Sea and mountain. Rivers and plains. Nature parks and sports and recreational facilities. Ecological jewels and cultural treasures. Hotels and prize-winning restaurants. But that isn’t all. Dorado is unique for the hospitality and warmth of its people, and it offers a general sense of order, security, respect, and openness. Dorado is known as the “Paradise of Puerto Rico,” and that’s not just exaggerated advertising—for both those who live and work here and those who visit, it’s a simple fact. Everyone who visits our city, with its warm, fertile soil, its sun, its sand, its blue waters, and its people, falls in love with Dorado, where people live to be happy.

To the beat of that refrain, the Carnaval del Plata begins—a carnival named in honor of Juan Boria, the famed Dorado declaimer of Afro-Antillean poetry. During this celebration, the community plays the starring role. So much so, that the vejigante sings the first line and the crowd responds with the second. The residents who join the celebration begin preparations months in advance, making the masks and green, yellow, and red costumes for the vejigantes.

The Carnival takes place the weekend prior to Ash Wednesday. It kicks off on Friday with a parade led by the mayor. “King Momo, a character beloved by the town, also makes an appearance. He’s a figure that’s been a part of the cultural, artistic, and sports scene—and really every other aspect—of the city practically forever. Then on Saturday, we crown the Carnival Queen,” explains Carlos López, mayor of Dorado.
Another characteristic of the Carnival is the figure of the Naked Dead Man, who’s represented by a skeleton dressed in black. This character hides during the parade and jumps out and “scares” people in the crowd. The vejigantes circle him, jump up, and fall to the ground, while the crowd sings.

The Naked Dead Man went off to bathe – And left his clothes in the plantains. “The event is known for its allegorical songs, which are unusual in their composition and rhythm, but very catchy,” the mayor continues. “The music includes rhythms of the plena, calypso, and steel bands. It’s a very cultural celebration, very much tied to criollismo—a celebration of our Puerto Rican culture.”
49 Years of Celebration This is the forty-ninth anniversary of the “new version of Carnival.” “Before 1972, Adán Cesáreo, along with musicians, neighbors, and friends, took charge of organizing the Carnival,” López tells us. Cesáreo dressed up as the Naked Dead Man and decorated the vejigantes’ costumes with newspapers cut into strips for fringe. In February of 2021, the celebration will be different. As a way of preventing the spread of the COVID-19 virus, the municipality will sponsor some reveille-like parades through town with a steel band, to “wake” the town and announce the start of the festivities the town, and later, different carnival groups will parade through the streets, evoking the songs and cheers of Carnival, but without the crowds.

Jane Stern “There’s no end to what a community library can do, since it’s not in debt to anyone except the community it serves.” Jane Stern
Marilyn Stern’s face lights up when she remembers her first days in Puerto Rico and how books were always part of her family’s life. Her mother, Jane Stern, founder of the Jane Stern Community Library, considered education and volunteer work two fundamental pillars of her life. The daughter of Italian immigrants, Jane moved to Dorado with her husband and children in 1964. Her husband would come to the island for his job and Jane thought that living here would offer a more relaxed lifestyle than New York. At that time there were few libraries on the island with reading materials in English, so whenever she traveled to the States, she came back with a suitcase filled with books. In 1974, when her children were in college, and with the aid of nineteen members of the Dorado Community Club, she founded a community library as a means to exchange books in English. Today, the Jane Stern Community Library has eight satellites, or small libraries with computers and wi-fi, in public schools in Dorado, Vega Alta, Vega Baja, Toa Alta, and Toa Baja, in addition to its main location. “Sponsorship by the mayor of Dorado, Carlos López Rivera, has made it possible for the library to continue to have a home in the Luis Muñoz Marín municipal building,” Marilyn says. She adds that legislative donations, thanks to the support of representative Rafael “Tatito” Hernández Montañez, make the existence of the satellites possible. doradobound

New initiatives As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the library reinvented itself. It now has a drive-through window for lending and returning books, it provides music classes and book readings online, and it offers wi-fi so that families can connect from the satellites’ parking lots (the Parking Lot Broadband Program). Last semester, several teachers used the satellites’ wi-fi signal to give their classes online. In addition, the library printed more than 91,000 pages of modules, benefiting students in 29 schools in Dorado and neighboring towns. “The satellites have helped bridge the gap in access to information, because in these communities, between forty and sixty percent of the families live beneath the poverty line,” Marilyn explains. This year, plans are under way for high school students to complete their hours of community service through a tutoring program for children. “We listen to the community, their concerns, and we find solutions. Our staff and volunteers’ commitment makes all this possible,” Marilyn tells us. “As someone who arrived here sixty-five years ago, if you take your relationship with the island seriously, Puerto Rico will embrace you. It will change your life. There’s so much to gain when you impact your community. And for the Puerto Ricans who have lived here for generations, there’s so much to be proud of. We’re a home for so much innovation. I think the library is a universal model of how to start with nothing and build, and even make an impact,” Marilyn concludes proudly.

The families are welcomed by Kawy and Bruno, the dogs that help herd the animals. For “Farmer Pedro,” wants visitors to consider this place their farm.
At Cuatro Sombras Café, everything revolves around coffee. From planting the seeds at their Hacienda Santa Clara family farm in the mountains of Yauco, to growing beans in the shade provided by four trees and drying them in the sun, to grinding and roasting the beans at their micro-roaster in Old San Juan. Cuatro Sombras, or Four Shades, provides an honest product from the bean to the cup. Enjoy a 100% Arabica medium-bodied cup of coffee with vibrant acidity and brightness, accompanied by their cinnamon bun staple or a salmon avocado open toast.
Grecafé creates a sense of community in Dorado. Relax in their beautifully designed patio and order a cup of their Greca coffee. The Greca, made with El Trovador coffee of Adjuntas, gives you the same traditionally brewed flavor you’d get at home. Grecafé’s other espresso-based drinks are made with Café 2150, featuring a tasty medium-dark body. Combine it with one of the excellent brunch plates, lunch specials, tostadas, or a delicious carrot cake cupcake. Soon to come is a variety of filtered coffee and coffee cocktails.
Green Bites creates their vast array of coffee drinks from the Don Pello coffee bean from Museo del Café in Ciales. The creamy texture of the milk foam compliments this delicious 100% Arabica bean. Green Bites provides a space for coffee lovers and is committed to offering healthy food options for people with gluten or food allergies, as well as keto, vegan, low fat, or low sugar alternatives. When asked what makes her coffee different, the owner, Yibel Figueroa, said it’s made with lots of love.
Blooming Cup just opened the doors to its new location in the heart of Dorado. Their philosophy is to create the warmest, most memorable, personal, and cozy experience for you to escape from your hectic life and enjoy a cup of coffee—just like you would at your grandmother’s house. Their tasty coffee is a work of art, and an excuse to gather around the table and cultivate the beautiful culture that happens around a cup of coffee. Enjoy their signature waffle bites, moist cake, quesitos, and guava pastellilos, accompanied by coffee made from a blend of Puerto Rico.
Bocatto is our latest addition to Dorado. A cute coffee truck along the 693, this family operated gem is exactly what we needed for that quick coffee fix. For the owner, coffee is a magical drink that opens doors to ideas and dreams. Bocatto showcases two different types of Puerto Rican coffees: Don Pello from Ciales, which has a strong body, with notes of chocolate and acidity, while Tres Picachos from Jayuya, which features fruity notes and a smooth body. Try their iced Moca-Caramel or indulge in one of their homemade pastries and soups.
At Starbucks, coffee has been a passion and inspiration since the store first opened its doors. Puerto Rico is one of the 30 countries where Starbucks sources their coffee from, and they are committed to supporting local coffee growers and food vendors. Enjoy local favorites like the traditional Ham and Cheese Mallorca, or their Guava Coconut Panetela, which pairs perfectly with their Starbucks® Single-Origin Puerto Rico. Try an espresso decaf Americano or order a fresh cup of coffee made with the PourOver brewing method. And here is some exciting news: Dorado will soon have two Starbucks locations!

SIETE VIDAS
doradobound
I can’t predict the exact date, but I’m pretty sure what the return of hugs will feel like, because I’ve spent a lot of time imagining it. Regardless of COVID-19, we all need a hug to maintain our humanity as sane, functional, and touch-sensitive beings. During these long pandemic months, so many things have gotten in the way of the simple act of touching! Fear and latex gloves, disinfectant and a sense of responsibility, distance and COVID testing have conspired to frighten us away from physical contact, leading to forms of greeting and affection totally alien to the way our social lives as Puerto Ricans used to be.

¿A quién abrazarás primero?

I can’t say I enjoy it when my personal space is constantly invaded, but I do love to give a big hug when it’s called for. And the time we’re in now REALLY calls for it. When we open our arms to greet another person, we’re not just giving a little of our own warmth, we’re transmitting all kinds of energy—energies of love, solidarity, trust, peace, company, and happiness. When a hug embraces a gloomy soul, it wordlessly infuses hope. And almost always, the intention returns like a boomerang, multiplying the emotions of the person who broke through the walls of physical distance to touch another person. Emotions. Is that what all this distancing is about? Has it caused us to recognize what we’d been squandering, trivializing, even forgetting? Today, we all know how hermits feel, and I don’t think their contentment with purposeless, endless solitude is widely shared. I’m no fortune-teller, but I can predict that across cultures and religions, as soon as it’s possible, the first thing we’ll all be ready for is a hug. From distant Australia and Russia to nearby Rincón or Culebra, the goal will be the same: wrap another person in your arms and with your love in order to communicate so many things we’ve gone through separately. We’ll be returning to the house of hugs. And then the problem may no longer be getting a hug, but rather letting go, because in a bear hug that realigns your vertebrae, or in the soft embrace that comforts, or in the warm hug that expresses our love, we’ll be telling each other what we’ve lost and gained in these eleven months—and counting. There are so many stories to tell, so many hugs to give. And from now on—maybe due to the trauma of going months without any hugs or maybe because it’s impossible to deny our DNA—we’ll give them the importance they deserve. The only question is who we’ll hug first.

Children’s and adolescents’ mental health can also be seriously affected during this difficult period, which has seen so many changes to our lives.
These are some of the signs you should watch for: Children through 12 years old •Irritability They complain, throw tantrums, and have frequent crying spells. •Separation anxiety They’re more attached to you than normal. •Eating problems They have no appetite or, on the contrary, have more appetite than normal. They might have stomachaches, diarrhea, or constipation. •Changes in sleep patterns It’s hard for them to fall asleep or they get up in the middle of the night more than usual. They want to sleep in their parents’ room, or with their siblings. They have nightmares. They wet their bed. •Behavior modification during playtime They talk about sickness, death, or show signs of aggressiveness.
We should take the time to talk to our children and let them express their feelings and emotions. They don’t know why they feel this way.
Teenagers •Mood changes Sadness, irritability, worry, bad moods, or loss of interest in activities they used to enjoy. •Isolation They shut themselves away, don’t want to leave their rooms, or are no longer interested in texting or talking to their friends like they used to do. •Changes in physical appearance They don’t seem to care about their appearance as they used to, or are neglectful of hygiene. •Problems concentrating Their grades drop and it’s hard for them to pay attention. •Risky behaviors Use of alcoholic beverages, drugs, or cigarettes. •Suicidal thoughts If they express thoughts of hopelessness, suicide, or death, don’t take it lightly. Seek professional help so they can be given tools that will help them to properly manage these thoughts. With teenagers, it can sometimes be hard to identify the signs of depression and anxiety, since this group naturally experiences many changes. No matter what age your children are, let them know that they can confide in you and that they have your unconditional support. Seeking professional help early on can make an enormous difference in their mental health.

Glorianne “Glow” Rivera Casanova has written the story of her life so far in her autobiography The Diva, The Disability, and The Unforeseen Drinking Game: A Story of Self-Acceptance. She also remembers how she longed to go on field trips in the same bus her classmates went in, but couldn’t because the buses didn’t have ramps for a wheelchair. She also writes about her upbringing in Dorado, surrounded by the love of her parents and siblings. She remembers, too, how her mother became an expert in spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), the genetic disease Glorianne has, which attacks the motor neurons in the spinal cord. When she talks about her parents, Glorianne becomes emotional. After a brief silence, she clears her throat, then tells us she was raised just like her siblings. That was why, instead of focusing on physical therapies, they encouraged her to excel at her studies. “That allowed me to develop as a person,” she says with self-assurance. “What I want my book to do is let a little girl in my position know that it’s not bad to be disabled. I want her to be able to just say, ‘This is who I am, get used to it,’” she laughs. “My disability doesn’t take anything away from my triumphs. My disability adds to them.

a reality. She studied Fashion Marketing, with a sub-specialty in Costume Design, at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Georgia. “At college I realized that there are no limits—the only limit is other people’s ignorance,” she declares. As an example, she explains how, many times, she had to insist that yes, she was the creator of the projects she turned in, and that the assistant who accompanied her just helped her erase some lines or move the paper while she drew because her disease doesn’t allow her to move or position her hands the way other people do. The junction of fashion and psychology Glorianne is now waiting to be admitted to a master’s degree program in psychological counseling in Puerto Rico. So, during the pandemic she’s been taking some prerequisite courses. “Fashion and psychology go hand in hand—more than people think. It would be supercool to practice fashion therapy and make patients feel supergood. So, little by little, I’m stitching my dreams together,” she says. Her book goes deeper into that concept: “I think clothes have a subconscious value in our lives. They say more about us and our days than we want to believe. Because we live in a world where, if you’re privileged enough to choose your clothes, then they speak for you.” One additional goal Glorianne has is establishing the necessary connections to produce a TV series. She’s already written the script for it. Based on her life and aspirations, One Apartment Down is about a young disabled fashion designer and her four assistants, who help her with her daily life. “It’s like Sex and the City meets Jane the Virgin,” Glorianne says. Oh, and a second part of her autobiography is on the way. Stay tuned!

When we see photos of children’s rooms perfectly organized by color on Pinterest, we’re hypnotized. The same thing happens to us when we see Marie Kondo and The Home Edit. These images, plus the amount of time we spend at home now, make us more aware of that stack of T-shirts spilling out of the drawer, because we often keep lots of things we no longer need or use, and the mere existence of disorder can overwhelm us. 62

But the truth is, you don’t have to be an “organized person” to practice the art of organization. “Being organized” isn’t a personality trait—it’s a discipline, and I’ve seen how managing to get organized offers the chance to create clarity and calm in our homes. All you have to do is start, one step at a time. Control disorder with these three basic tips:
Empieza poco a poco.
1. Start small Most people try to organize their whole house at once. When that doesn’t work, they become overwhelmed and give up. Start little by little, perhaps with a closet, a drawer, or the refrigerator.
2. Find a place for it You should clean and put every item that enters your house in its proper place. This not only helps you organize, but also makes you think about the many things you buy and bring home.
3. Plan The night before, try to make a list of everything you’re going to need the next day. That way, you’ll be sure you can get out of the house on time and not leave a trail of disorder when you try to find the things you want to take with you.
Organiza paso a paso: • ¡Todo afuera!
Organize step by step: • Everything out! Before starting to organize, clear the area and prepare the drawers and shelves where you’re going to put all your things. Then put every item neatly in its designated place. • Go through your belongings and put the things you don’t use or don’t need to one side. • Sort into groups. For example: put all the knives, the batteries, and the gift wrap in their separate places. • Organize according to use, needs, and the space available.
• Buy containers, baskets, or plastic boxes so that everything will have its place and be easier to find and maintain.

When you embrace seasonal eating, you can be healthier, contribute to the local economy, and approach a natural lifestyle, bite by bite. We’re not talking about a new diet, or a gastronomic trend. Until just a few decades ago, the way we ate, our daily menu, revolved around foods harvested on the island during the particular time of year. But then things changed; we began to eat imported produce. But shattering the myth that what’s imported is better and more flavorful is actually not hard to do. Carla de la Torre, a sports nutritionist known on social media as Carla Mi Nutricionista, is an expert at exactly that sort of myth-busting, and she offers a few positive tips for seasonal eating.

•“The fresher, the more flavorful,” says Carla, who’s also a specialist in exercise physiology. The important value of seasonal eating is that seasonal food ripens naturally, is harvested at the right time, and, therefore, is far more flavorful. Because you’ve probably noted that the flavor of a banana ripened naturally is not the same as one ripened artificially. •Seasonal crops are less expensive. “Another point in their favor, ecologically speaking, is that they don’t need so much transportation and storage,” Carla adds. •The third benefit is that buying and consuming seasonal produce supports our local farmers and the local economy.

Tattoos are as old as humanity itself. Primitive peoples tattooed themselves. As did the Egyptians. And in 1769, tattoos arrived on this side of the world thanks to a crew member on one of the Pacific expeditions of famed British explorer James Cook. From that date on, this “body art” has been evolving, and now it seems there are more people with tattoos than without them. That’s how Zuh Cordero sees it, anyway. She’s an artist who works for the Omphvlos tattoo studio in Dorado. She knows, firsthand, the many reasons people might have for tattooing themselves. “I think I have more than twenty; honestly, I haven’t counted. But I get a tattoo to remember. I’m really forgetful, and I feel like they help me organize my mind. They’re like a timeline,” this graduate of the Escuela de Artes Plásticas explains, pointing to the place on her skin where the date that changed the history of Puerto Rico—the summer of 2019—is tattooed. In the almost four years since she became a tattoo artist (under the tutelage of her mentor, Saree González), Zuh has tattooed all kinds of people, from attorneys and doctors to very young people. “They ask for letters, dates, names, and even portraits of their pets. There are people who want something small and subtle, others not so much,” says Zuh, who has had clients the likes of actor Megan Fox and model Lala Kent. There is a wide range of tattoo styles: “blackwork,” which uses only black ink, traditional, watercolor, Japanese, and realist, to mention just a few of the styles in vogue now. Zuh specializes in illustration and micro-realism, and the tattoos she creates show a high degree of artistry. In her view, the ideal thing is for the people who put themselves in her hands to know what they want, because the “canvas” is limited. You just have one body, after all, and a tattoo is forever.

One of the ecosystems in progress is on Finca Pastoreo, in Barrio Maguayo in Dorado. The farm has already started harvesting sunflowers, and it will soon add sugar cane, blue java bananas, lavender and other wildflowers that are excellent for increasing the insect’s local population. “We’ll do tours through the fields and the bee sanctuary, and a honey tasting, for a donation,” explains Candice Galek, an e-commerce entrepreneur who is also the founder of the Karma Honey Project.
“While I was exploring farms and coffee plantations in Puerto Rico, I learned that after hurricanes Irma and Maria, there was a steep decline in the local bee population. After looking into it a little, I discovered that the Puerto Rican bee, gAHB, was possibly the ‘Holy Grail’ of bees, and it occurred to me that somebody should do something about it,” Candice tells us.

Our biologist, Bert Rivera Marchand, of Inter-American University of Puerto Rico, will connect with organizations on the island that can help us. Recently, we received a donation of a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry machine, which will allow us to analyze the venom.

Curiosity is the name Lorenzo González, an eighthgrade student at Dorado Academy, chose for the work he created at Muraleo, an urban-art event held recently, for the third consecutive year, at San Patricio Village. “After being shut up for so long during the pandemic, we have to reactivate our curiosity and rediscover all the things we enjoyed so much that the pandemic took away from us temporarily. Little by little, we have to gradually come out of our rooms and pick up our lives again,” says Lorenzo about the work he created on one of the walls of the shopping center. Lolo, as his friends call him, took part alongside giants of the urban art movement like BIKISMO, Colectivo Morviví, Pegamento Mahones, Juan Salgado, Don Rimx, and others. Lolo, we see a great future for you!
