Doorways is a community-based nonprofit providing services for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, as well as youth and families experiencing homelessness. Through the generosity of our partners and supporters, we help our most vulnerable neighbors survive crisis, rebuild their lives, and achieve brighter futures. Your support allows us to actively address the root causes of homelessness and abuse in our community, and quickly respond when crisis occurs.

Answered 1,316 crisis calls of which 988 provided crisis and supportive counseling for adults and children experiencing domestic and/or sexual violence
Provided 29 hospital accompaniments for Sexual Assault Nurse Exams, 8 accompaniments for Domestic Violence Forensic Exams, and 2 accompaniments for survivors who received both exams
Provided 2,172 therapy sessions (more than 20% increase from the previous year) and 61 support group sessions
Assisted 128 adults and 129 children seeking protective orders, child support, custody petitions, and other court judgments

SAFE HARBOR When Rachael determined that staying in her home was a matter of life and death, she and her children had no place to go.
In crises like COVID-19, domestic violence increases. Survivors across the globe have reported an increase in the frequency of abuse as well as the severity. As Arlington's only domestic and sexual violence programs, Doorways has remained open 24/7 to provide safe harbor and support to all survivors.
Though she had endured years of abuse, her husband's behaviors were escalating, and she just knew in her gut that this time he could be capable of taking her life. Rachael knew that her husband would become very violent if he even vaguely sensed that she wanted to leave. Rachael found a lifeline with Doorways. She worked with hotline staff to develop a safety plan to escape her husband. On a fateful spring morning, while her husband was at work, Rachael and her children escaped the fear of their home to the safe harbor of Doorways' Safehouse. At first, Rachael still struggled to feel safe, often reliving the terror of abuse, making it difficult to focus on even simple tasks. Rachael's financial situation only made her anxiety worse. She had debt, and not long after she entered shelter, it became worse when her husband defaulted on a personal loan she cosigned. Rachael felt trapped. She had no idea how she could afford a home for her family on her own.

Doorways' staff gave Rachael the gentle support she needed to work through her trauma, and after a few months in shelter, she was able to gather enough energy to fully focus on her goals. Rachael eventually moved into her own apartment with her family through the HomeStart Supportive Housing Program. With the HomeStart rental subsidy, Rachael had the financial room she needed to address her debts and get closer to realistically affording an apartment on her own. With the support of her Financial Independence Track (FIT) Counselor, Rachael developed a plan to use her tax refund to pay down a majority of her debts. Rachael was ecstatic to show her FIT Counselor how many payments she was able to cross off from her monthly budget. As Rachael encountered challenges, she would often go back to this budget to reflect on how it was possible to achieve goals, even when it once seemed impossible. Rachael's growth did not stop there. She helped her children establish safety and well-being amid the trauma they experienced, secured a much-desired divorce from her husband, and obtained her dream job within a government agency. Today, Rachael is getting ready to transition from the HomeStart Supportive Housing Program, and she is ready and excited for what is to come for her and her family. Doorways gave Rachael the safety, confidence, and strength she needed to not only survive, but thrive.

NEW PREVENTION PROGRAM COMING SOON This year, Judy Fiske Moak and Kevin Moak (pictured on page right, middle) made a transformative investment in the future of Doorways and our community: The Moak-Fiske Prevention Innovation and Investment Gift, designed to establish a Prevention Program at Doorways. This extraordinary $300,000 gift, which includes $50,000 in matching funds, is the first of its kind in Doorways' history. Judy and Kevin made this investment in honor of Kevin's mother, Evelyn Arnold Moak (whose portrait Kevin is holding), and her lifelong passion for helping the most vulnerable in the community. "My mom had an amazing level of energy that she channeled into advocacy work related to early childhood education, adult mental health, and support for victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault," said Kevin. "We are thrilled to be able to honor her legacy by helping Doorways create and launch the Prevention Program which is a vital step toward lessening the incidence of violence in our community."

About the Prevention Program The Moak-Fiske Prevention Innovation and Investment Gift will enable Doorways to create and launch a new Prevention Program. The program will educate youth to change social norms and conditions, creating healthier environments and relationships so that sexual and intimate partner violence are less likely to occur. Programming will be designed to shift young people's attitudes, behaviors, and the norms that support and perpetuate the root causes of violence. Curriculum topics will include healthy relationships, consent, communication, and gender stereotypes to help prevent sexual and domestic violence.

THE MOAK-FISKE PREVENTION INNOVATION AND INVESTMENT GIFT
Doorways continued to shelter survivors and families throughout the COVID-19 crisis, using hotels when needed to keep everyone safe and healthy.
SHELTER, HOUSING, AND COMPREHENSIVE SUPPORT
Doorways shelters and houses more than 200 people each year. Dedicated staff coordinate services for every client, including children, within and beyond Doorways.
Provided emergency shelter for 70 people escaping abuse in the Domestic Violence Safehouse, Safe Apartments, & Safe Kennel, and 94% of Safehouse households broke the cycle of violence and did not return to abusive living situations
Sheltered 47 people experiencing homelessness at the Freddie Mac Foundation Family Home, and 74% of households obtained permanent housing post-shelter
Housed and supported 110 people in long-term housing through the HomeStart Supportive Housing Program, and 81% maintained their housing after graduation (or at the end of the year)

WHEN COVID CHANGED EVERYTHING Joan entered the Family Home with her two young children after being evicted from their home due to capacity issues. After Joan gave birth to her second child, the apartment complex would not renew her lease. Joan struggled to balance finding childcare for her youngest, home schooling her older child, and having enough time to maintain her employment. Before the COVID-19 crisis hit, she worked full-time at a local grocery store. The crisis meant that her hours varied, which caused a decrease in her hours. One of Doorways' children's counselors immediately began working with the family to enroll the oldest child in school and locate child care for the youngest. Joan worked with the financial counselor to develop a budget that would assist her with paying bills and saving money. Joan also wanted to speak with a therapist, so staff connected her with Doorways' mobile advocate. In the past, she had experienced domestic violence, and she wanted help expressing the feelings she still harbored about her experience, and move forward in her healing journey. Joan was forced to leave her job due to the shortage of hours available on a weekly basis. Still living in the Family Home with her kids, Joan is currently working as a delivery driver while also actively looking for a job that will work with her children's schedule. The Family Home team will continue to work with Joan and her family to successfully transition into next-step housing.

Tailored support for youth (ages 18-25) through the Pathways for Youth program, resulting in 71% of youth improving their skills in at least two areas after intensive life skills training

KEEPING BUSY DURING LOCKDOWNS Despite COVID-19, our critical work continued every day, even as schools and daycares closed. Doorways' dedicated and creative children's services staff members found new ways to bring ongoing support to children despite the lockdown, like these therapeutic activity kits. Doorways' children's counselors carefully curated the contents of the kits, and then delivered them safely to families. For families in HomeStart, kits were delivered to clients' homes via nocontact drop-offs. Counselors provided secure telemental health sessions and regular checkins to offer some continuity amidst the crisis children were experiencing. Every kit was individualized to help each client with their therapeutic goals, help relieve stress, increase coping skills at home, and to aid in the client's participation in telemental health sessions. Masks, for example, could help children and counselors work through what the child wanted to keep to themselves, like the trauma they had experienced, and what they wanted to show the world, like the resilience that got them through it.
