DOOR COUNTY

Beverages

(and Where to Find Them)

by Katy Spratte Joyce • Photography by Kayla Larsen

Across the Door peninsula, majestic bluffs, rolling farmland, and sparkling waters delight. But it’s the small, locally-owned businesses that truly define this scenic land, where independent entrepreneurs put passion and quality first. The drink scene reflects that same spirit, as Door County’s craft breweries, wineries, watering holes, and coffee shops are all about supporting local and using ingredients grown right here.

In this slice of Midwestern heaven, drinks aren’t just beverages—they’re expressions of place, of craft, of community. Purveyors in Door County aren’t simply serving up refreshments—they’re capturing the character of the area itself.

Think barrel-aged bourbon distilled steps from the bay. Sips of cherry beer crafted with local fruit. Espresso pulled by hand, served in a café where everyone knows your name— even if you’re only here for the weekend. There’s a deep sense

of place in every beverage poured and enjoyed here.

Door County is the clink of glasses at golden hour, with the sun setting over Green Bay. It’s cherry wine on a summer patio and cinnamon-laced apple cider in fall. It’s a steaming mug cradled between mittened hands after a hike through the snow-kissed Northwoods.

So, whether you’re craving a bright red wine, a frosty pint, or the perfect cup of joe, raise a glass to everything that makes Door County special—one iconic sip at a time. With rustic taverns, inventive breweries, tucked-away coffee roasters, and chic tasting rooms pouring estate-grown wine, there’s truly a perfect pour for every palate.

After all, it’s not just about the drinks themselves. In Door County, beverages are a reason to gather, share a conversation, and connect with friends old and new. The convivial spirit that runs through the area’s businesses is present in every

Door 44 Winery

sip, making each stop a chance to experience the warmth and hospitality that makes these coastal communities so inviting.

Now let’s GO!...imbibe in Door County.

Just outside the city limits of Sturgeon Bay, where the landscape opens into rolling fields and vineyard rows, you’ll find Door 44 Winery —a modern gem in Wisconsin’s wine country and the largest producer in the Wisconsin Ledge AVA (American Viticultural Area). This sleek and welcoming winery produces bottles that capture the character of the peninsula in every sip. Step into the light-filled tasting room and you’re immediately greeted by the aroma of oak, fruit, and fermenting ambition. Door 44 specializes in cold-climate varietals that thrive in Wisconsin’s unique terroir. A standout in their collection is the Marquette , a dry red wine that recently earned the “Best of Class” title at the International Cold Climate

Wine Competition. Don’t miss the opportunity to taste this award-winning wine— it’s a true reflection of the area’s growing winemaking excellence.

Down the road, a nearby must-visit beverage spot is Nightingale Supper Club in Sturgeon Bay. When it comes to dessert drinks, they take things to the next level with their signature boozy offerings. “Dessert drinks are iconic to supper clubs, especially ice cream drinks. Every supper club should have one,” says John Heikkila, owner. At his restaurant, “It is neck and neck for best sellers, between the Brandy Alexander and the Grasshopper ,” he adds. (Often a party of two will each order one, so they can sample both.)

The Grasshopper is a fan favorite, blending creamy ice cream, chocolate syrup, white crème de cacao, and crème de menthe, into a dreamy, refreshing concoction. The Brandy Alexander consists of Korbel Brandy, ice cream, and crème de cacao

topped with whipped cream and nutmeg. Both beverages include old school preparation, with “standard ice cream, hand mixing each drink to order,” he explains. But that’s just the start—Nightingale offers other indulgent dessert drinks, each combining sweet flavors with a spirited twist. These milkshake-like creations feel distinctly Wisconsin, mixing the state’s love of dairy with a little something extra.

In a state well-known for beer, look no further than

Bridge Up Brewing . There are two options to experience local sips there, with taprooms in Sturgeon Bay and Fish Creek. Managing Partner and Head Brewer Trent Snyder shares that all the names of the beers are inspired by Door County. But if you only have time to try one beer, he adds, “Our number one beer, the beer that people seem to gravitate to the most, is a hazy IPA called Stubborn Sturgeon .” Snyder explains that it’s a little different than a traditional

Door Peninsula Winery

Door County Distillery’s award-winning gin

hazy, since “It’s not as heavy and pillowy...it’s a little sharper, very refreshing and citrus forward,” as opposed to the usual stone fruit tasting notes. If you’re settling in for a beer flight, Snyder has a few other recommendations, including U-Pick featuring local cherries, A Cure for the Yips pilsner, and 1851, a traditional refreshing lager. And, while you’re there, don’t miss the poppy, funky, technicolor beer cans designed by area watercolor artist Josie Schultz. (Psssst: a tasting flight

consists of four five-ounce pours, only available at the Sturgeon Bay location).

Off the county’s main artery, State Highway 57, the Door Peninsula Winery in Carlsville welcomes visitors with the scent of ripe fruit and decades of winemaking tradition. With an on-site distillery and friendly tasting room, this is a must-stop for anyone exploring the flavors of the peninsula. Rob Peterson, Marketing and Sales Director, shares that fruit wines are the

winery’s most iconic, as that’s where it all began. “A popular newer option is our Cherry Mimosa ,” notes Peterson. “It’s 100% Door County,” he adds. “Unlike a typical mimosa that’s comprised of Champagne and OJ, this is our local version that has a base of sparkling apple wine with cherry juice added in.” Flavored meads are really growing in popularity at Door Peninsula Winery, too. Fun flavors like Blackberry Citrus Buzz , Blood Orange Buzz , and Cherry Buzz offer sweet local sips, “all crafted from Wisconsin-made wildflower honey,” Peterson says. For even more Door County tie-ins, check out the on-premises Door County Distillery . A brand-new Cherry Brandy Liqueur , which just debuted this season, is already proving to be a popular pick. Another locally-infused winner is Cherry Bourbon , which was just added to the full-time line up (formerly a seasonal offering). Stop in and try it in a Cherry Bourbon Old-Fashioned from the cocktail

menu, one of the top selling drinks. More into lighter spirits? Don’t miss the distillery’s most award-winning option, their Gin , which contains local juniper grown in Wisconsin alongside eight botanicals for a custom blend.

For a caffeinated moment, Door County Coffee , also in Carlsville, offers a selection of flavors that perfectly capture the spirit of the region. Fittingly, among their best-sellers is the Cherry Crème , a sweet and fruity coffee that highlights Door County’s famous cherry orchards. With its smooth, rich flavor and a hint of sweetness, it’s a favorite for those looking for a distinctive, local coffee experience. Another crowd pleaser is the Highlander Grogg , a delightful blend of Irish cream and caramel that brings a decadent, dessert-like twist to your morning routine. Limited time seasonal offerings are also super fun to try. We especially love the Door County Maple and Vanilla Almond Kringle , the state’s official pastry,

for hyper local sips.

Heading across the county to Egg Harbor, another interesting stop is Anchored Roots Vineyard & Winery . Their wine portfolio takes a two-pronged approach: one part traditional European grapes from Washington State, one part cold hardy varietals grown locally in the Wisconsin Ledge AVA. A Badger state favorite is the 2024 Ledge Blanc , a white blend of mostly Itasca, mixed with Frontenac Blanc and Le Crescent . “I think Itasca is an excellent example of the Door County Terroir,” notes owner Eric Gale. “[It’s] proving itself to be an incredible grape in our region. It handles our climate wonderfully, plenty of cold hardiness with an early enough ripening date to avoid any issues with fall frosts,” he adds. Stop by for a tasting, or plan your visit for a special winery tour day, offered roughly once a month through the summer.

Our next stop is Stone’s Throw Winery , a unique spot in Door County near the

Anchored Roots Vineyard & Winery

center of the peninsula. With a tasting room inside a refurbished century-old barn, it’s where California grown grapes meet Midwestern hospitality. Owner Russell Turco has been crafting wines in Wisconsin for nearly three decades, moving the area’s industry forward by offering something out of the ordinary on the peninsula. He shares, “For 29 years, Stone’s Throw has provided the beverage that reflects our understanding of the best of life.” Try some of their best sellers, like Petite Verdot , “our top-selling red wine, from Dry Creek Sonoma vineyard: 40+ year old vines and rich, ripe, and lovely with almost anything,” notes Turco. “Our top selling white is our Chenin Blanc , grown in our vineyard in St. Helena, Napa Valley. 30-yearold vines and a stunner with great ability to pair with everything, especially a warm spring or summer evening,” he says.

Taking the backroads to Fish Creek, note the iconic red barn that’s the centerpiece of

well-known Lautenbach’s Orchard Country Winery & Market . Almost everything they do features fruit grown on the property. Co-owner Carrie Lautenbach shares some customer favorites and notes, “ Honey Crisp Apple is one of our top selling wines. It’s definitely a sweeter wine, but has a little tang too.” For ciders, the most popular, and Lautenbach’s favorite sip, is the Pebble Beach Pear . “[It’s] crisp and refreshing with a slight effervescence,” she describes. Many of their most popular items tend to be fruit forward, to match client’s preferences. “Door County is historically known for cherries, so our winery and cider company produces about 15 different wines and hard ciders with cherries,” she adds. Lautenbach’s offers beverage flights, so visitors can come and try all of the wines. “We have a sample size tasting flight, with five flavor options, and a regular size tasting flight, also with five flavor options,” Lautenbach notes. “Everything is also

available by the glass to try on-site, too,” she continues. If you prefer a non-alcoholic sip, try the tart cherry juice, which is very popular and also right on property. “Tart cherries are a new superfruit and very good for you, with lots of great antioxidants, melatonin, all sorts of qualities that make it very good for you to drink,” she shares. “The tart cherry juice is ideal to use for cocktails and mocktails too, so it’s not just for health reasons,” Lautenbach adds.

Prefer your caffeine with a little something more robust? Don’t miss the Bayside Coffee at Fish Creek favorite Bayside Tavern . Inspired by Irish coffee, this morning beverage contains black coffee, one shot of Goslings 151 Proof Black Seal Rum, one shot of Grand Marnier, one shot of Kahlua, and one shot of Baileys. A few additional flavorings like sugar, nutmeg, and cinnamon round out this very popular, albeit very strong, sip.

Stabbur at Al Johnson’s

Swedish Restaurant and Butik

Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant and Butik in Sister Bay is the famous restaurant with live goats on its green sod roof. Say Skål! with a Malmö Mule from Stabbur , the eatery’s adjacent beer garden.

“We wanted to do a mule that was in the Scandinavian realm,” says Kit Butz. The Malmö Mule features blueberries, abundant and very popular in the Nordic region. The Al Johnson’s Scandi-inspired mule is one of the original cocktails on Stabbur’s

specialty cocktail list. “It’s made in traditional mule style, but it’s subtly different, just super refreshing, light and effervescent,” Butz explains. The Malmö Mule contains bitters, lime juice, blueberry simple syrup (made in-house from scratch), and ginger beer. Butz adds, “it’s my go-to and pretty unique just to us…it’s not a drink that you’re going to find anywhere else.”

on the roof, looking out across the bay at sunset. Or if you’re looking for something a little more intense, consider the famous Thor’s Hammer , a shot of Aquavit (a Scandi spirit), followed by a pickled herring chaser. Skål!

For a destination wine bar with deep Wisconsin roots, try the bright and airy Twelve Eleven in Sister Bay. This modern yet cozy indoor/outdoor hybrid is a wine lover’s dream stop on a Door County

beverage tour. “We’re known for our Pinot Noirs, and we have a fabulous jammy Russian River Pinot , the first wine ever made under our label,” explains GM and co-owner Liz Wuesthoff. All Twelve Eleven wine is made at a California wine coop, then shipped to the Wisconsin brick and mortar. Beyond the Pinot, try the Barbera Rosé . “So yummy! It’s a best-in-class award winner, something unique [because] you don’t usually see rosé made with this

grape,” she adds. The wine list contains ten from their own label plus a few others to round out the portfolio. “For our wines, I try to focus very heavily on organic, sustainable, biodynamic, and female-produced wine,” notes Wuesthoff. Local beer and cider are available on site too. “We carry Peach Barn seltzers, Sway Brewery, and Island Orchard hard ciders,” she shares.

For a community-focused, small batch roasted experience, drive northwards to Ellison Bay and look no further than Kick Ash Coffee . Housed in a beautifully renovated former church, this spot offers a unique and serene setting for coffee enthusiasts. The upstairs retail space showcases a variety of gluten-free baked goods, including their own renowned granola (which started it all), and artisan products from local Door County makers. During the summer months, guests can enjoy live music in the Kick Ash gardens, adding to the community-fo -

cused experience. Give back with your morning cup of joe by trying the Door County Land Trust Coffe e, like the land and waters of the peninsula, it’s clean with notes of cherry, cedar, and endless depth.

Moving further north, near the tip of the peninsula in Gills Rock, try the Blue Cheese Martini at Shoreline Restaurant . A newer offering, just added to the menu for 2025, the drink is definitely something special. Vodka is ‘fat-washed’ in house with creamy Carr Valley Glacier Blue Cheese, an ode to the state’s most famous export. Dolin Dry Vermouth, olive brine, and blue cheese stuffed olives round out this savory showstopper. “It has a velvety finish that blue cheese lovers will dream about,” adds Mekaila Novitski, Co-owner and Front of House Manager. She continues, “It’s a bold twist on a classic.” Novitski suggests enjoying this drink while overlooking the bay at the tip of the county, enjoying a beautiful sunset from their brand-new patio.

Nelsen’s Hall Bitters Club

Go even further north for a taste of history on remote Washington Island, a 30-minute ferry ride away. Nelsen’s Hall Bitters Club is a must-visit on any Door County beverage trail. This old timey watering hole is known as one of the world’s largest purveyors of Angostura bitters, with some 10,000 servings annually. Join the Bitters Club by taking a shot of Angostura tincture, an especially potent earthy meets warming spices 90-proof con -

coction. Nelsen’s is also famous as Wisconsin’s longest operating tavern, with roots dating back to 1899. Join us to sip sip hooray at Le Café and The Distillery at Washington Island’s Fragrant Isle Lavender Farm , the largest such farm in the Midwest. More than 20,000 lavender plants grace this beautiful property and help instill a sense of place into their bespoke beverage offerings. Guests should sample

the wines, beers, and ciders enhanced with lavender grown right on site. If you can only try one, go with the Lavender Honey Signature Wine , which strikes a delicate balance of sweet honey and fragrant lavender. “The smooth, honeyed sweetness is beautifully complemented by the subtle floral notes of lavender, creating a refreshing and aromatic experience that lingers on the palate,” explains General Manager Dawn Heath. “The

wine’s golden hue mirrors the warmth and richness of its flavor profile, a true celebration of nature’s finest ingredients,” she adds. On the NA front, lavender lattes and lemonade are sure to delight. Fragrant Isle is truly a celebration of Washington Island, one of the county’s most incredible spots, and one of our favorite places to imbibe with a view.

After a ferry ride back to the mainland, another worthy stop is Island Orchard Cider

in Ellison Bay, where the flavors of Door County take center stage. This family-owned cider house crafts Normandy-style dry ciders, each made with apples and local ingredients that reflect the agricultural heart of the region. Savor the crisp, bold flavors of their Brut Apple Reserve or enjoy the deep, tannic notes of Kingston Black . For something truly unique, sample their Spruce Tip Cider , infused with locally foraged spruce, or the fragrant Apple Lavender, which blends

Door County-grown apples with lavender from nearby farms. Visit the taproom for a flight of these one-of-a-kind ciders, and take home a bottle to bring a piece of the peninsula with you.

Back south on Hwy 42 to Sister Bay, Peach Barn Farmhouse & Brewery , the village’s first microbrewery, is where a cold sip can be enjoyed in a relaxed, family-friendly setting. Housed in a charmingly renovated auto shop, this taproom has both indoor space

Island Orchard Cider

and an expansive outdoor area with picnic tables, pergolas, lawn games, and a shaded kids play area. A fittingly popular pick is their Silo Sisters Peach Sour , which uses real peach puree to strike a perfect balance between tart and juicy. Think bright and clean, refreshing without being overwhelming, this sour is a touch sweeter than typical sours, and it’s been a hit with red wine drinkers for its fruit-forward profile. Peach Barn Farmhouse & Brewery isn’t just brewing beer—it’s

bottling the spirit of Door County. Each style on tap is designed to echo a local moment, from a hazy IPA that hits just right after a woodland hike to a light, citrusy witbier that channels the feel of a breezy beach day. Even their farmhouse ale leans into classic summer nostalgia, like the laid-back buzz after a ballgame. For a sampling of multiple DoCo inspired sips, grab a flight, which include four five-ounce pours at the taproom. No Wisconsin drinks

Sister Bay Bowl - Old Fashioned

conversation can be complete without a nod to the state’s official cocktail: the Old Fashioned . For a Badger State twist, enjoy with a base spirit of brandy (Korbel, of course) instead of whiskey and a soda water topper. Look no further than the Sister Bay Bowl and Supper Club in northern Door for what may be the county’s best version. Known for its classic take on the beloved beverage, this charmingly unfussy local spot serves up the emblematic cocktail with a perfect balance of sweetness and fizz. A perfect addition is the house-made bitters simple

syrup. Regardless of how you like yours, the Old Fashioned at Sister Bay Bowl has earned its reputation as the finest in the area. “It definitely embodies Wisconsin,” says manager Paula Anschutz.

It’s not just physical establishments that help Door County drinks shine. Special events allow visitors and residents to ring in the year with a celebratory beverage. To wit,

Sister Bay Historical Society’s annual Christkindlmarkt Door County , a new holiday tradition on the peninsula that celebrates its 5th event in 2025 (doorcountychristmasmarket.

com). Sample Glühwein , or mulled wine, a famous European hot drink that originated among the Continent’s well-established Christmas markets.

Lisa MacDonald of Northern Grill & Pub crafts the delicious DoCo version, with Cabernet, Port, simple syrup, and mulled wine spices. “The first year we made it all at home, one gallon at a time,” she says. Now, she makes it at the Northern Grill kitchen in Sister Bay, 10 gallons at a time! “With our business, it’s tough to volunteer or get involved in the summer months, [so] this is a perfect time of the year to be able to give back to

the community and our historical society,” she notes.

So wherever your peninsula adventure takes you—down winding orchard roads, to lavender-filled fields, or past a century-old barn—know that every sip holds a story. These aren’t just places to imbibe; they’re places to pause, connect, and soak in the essence of the land and lake. Because in Door County, the perfect pour isn’t only about what’s in your glass—it’s about where you are, who you’re with, and the memories made, year after year, and generation after generation. — Katy Spratte Joyce

Birch Creek’s 50th Season Celebrates its

Past, Present and Future

Fifty years ago, Jim and Fran Dutton, a couple with a dream to start a music camp, founded Birch Creek. From its meager beginnings with 12 students at an A-frame in the Town of Egg Harbor, the dream grew when they purchased the 40-acre Tishler farm across the road. The barn, farmhouse and granary buildings were part of the sale, and a profound, 50-year transformation began.

Birch Creek Music Performance Center

Birch Creek is a musician’s sanctuary, a place where young student and faculty musicians gather for four, two-week sessions. They immerse themselves in their music, perform for live audiences in the iconic Dutton Concert Barn, and leave inspired to dig deeper into their musical gifts. Birch Creek’s faculty models the life of a professional musician every day, and many students make a life-changing decision to pursue music for the rest of their lives. Currently, 80% of its students are pursuing a career in music. One of the county’s most inspiring places, Birch Creek launches careers, provides networking opportunities for students and faculty and is a safe place for creative musical discovery.

A product of Birch Creek’s life-transforming experience is current Executive Director Jenna Ferdon. She herself was a ‘creeker’ who attended three summers as a violinist, and later taught in the summer academy and fall adult programs. As a young student of 14, and with a lot of questions about who she could be when she grew up, she credits Birch Creek with providing a critical environment to answer her questions. Two short weeks affirmed a true and deep love for the mission of music and let her take the first “real” steps to what has grown into a joyful and meaningful life in the arts.

With over 10,000 students attending Birch Creek since its inception, many have carved their way into the music scene as performers, teachers and production professionals. In this 50th season, students, faculty and audiences will see the fruits of this labor, with Birch Creek alumni returning as accomplished musicians of national and international renown. These ‘creekers’ are delighted to return to share their insights, skills and experiences as they work side-by-side with current students. The Birch Creek community is thrilled to hear them perform once again in the Dutton Concert Barn. Please join us for this spectacular season of celebration at Birch Creek. — Mona Christensen Mona Christensen is the former Executive Director of Birch Creek (2015-2025).

Great restaurants, eateries, and coffee shops offer many choices — modern American, Asianinspired, tavern food, and fish boils.

Inns, cottages, and hotels are within walking distance to the shops, shoreline and parks.

This authentic fishing village lies at the northernmost tip of the peninsula — known as the ‘top of the thumb.’ Island ferries, weathered fishing sheds, and an old fishing boat that sits on dry land reflect its historic maritime heritage. Go fishing!

A fine restaurant with panoramic views, a few souvenir shops, and cottages occupy old buildings along the village’s only street and waterfront. Scandinavian imports, nautical items, jewelry, locally made jams, jellies, and pies can be found here.

Watch the incredible sunsets over Porte des Mortes (Death’s Door), go fishing, take a scenic boat ride, or take a drive on the county’s famous ‘winding’ road.

newport state park

Wisconsin’s only formally designated wilderness park — 2,373 acres of forests, wetlands, and meadows. Fern Trail has interpretative panels to guide visitors through the forest. There are miles of hiking and offroad biking trails, cross-country skiing paths, beaches, and campgrounds.

the winding road

The last few miles of highway 42 curves and zig zags through fields and forest and ends at Northport Pier. It is one of the county’s most beautiful and photographed sites — especially in autumn when maple trees are in full color. A must see.

This tranquil village, nestled on the shoreline of Lake Michigan, has sandy beaches, rocky shoreline cliffs, peaceful trails, quiet back roads, parks, festivals, and a great farmer’s market.

Go hike, bike, swim — or just hang out!

Quaint shops, in old homes and cabins, offer unique items — Amish quilts, pottery, ceramics, hand-weavings, arts, crafts, and photography.

Friendly restaurants and pubs offer good eats — Mexican specialties, homemade soups, bar burgers, and the Wisconsin favorite — the Friday fish fry.

farmer’s market

Open every Tuesday at Lakeside Park from 9am-1pm, the market also has grab-and-go food options. “Locally sourced” produce, fruit, bakery, meat, eggs and other products — all from local Door County farms, home kitchens, orchards and gardens. Arts and crafts are also available as the market celebrates this 16th season.

The business center for the Southern Door area of the Door Peninsula is rich with a life that most visitors never experience. Agriculturally driven, but just as naturally beautiful as the county’s northern region, it offers a quiet peace, and access to outdoor adventure, while also providing a gateway to a unique, surprisingly unchanged Belgian heritage.

What looks like a simple country crossroads is actually also the home to a renowned potter (Juddville Contemporary Clay Studio), the Write On, Door County arts organization (mission: to inspire and engage writers and readers of all ages, and at all stages); and St. Paul Lutheran Church. Initial appearances can be deceiving in Door County, so go ahead, slow down and explore…

The well-known Rowleys Bay Resort sadly burned down in 2023, but the area still offers one of the most astounding water views in the county. Featuring easy land and water access to

Mink River Basin, a watershed and flowage with excellent fishing, it’s hard to overstate the beauty of a blue-andgreen estuary view that spills out from the verdant shoreline towards greater Lake Michigan.

This little fishing village sits on the Green Bay shoreline in Southern Door. Increase Claflin, the county’s first settler, built a log cabin here in 1835. Today it is known for walleye, bass, and perch fishing. Its annual festival, ‘Little Sturgeon Days’ has live music, a horseshoe tournament and parade. Go fishing! Located in the town of Gardner.

This surprising little place, tucked away in the heart of the county, is surrounded by farmland. There’s a winery that offers tastings and a shop with its own products, a restaurant with a model train that entertains kids and adults alike, a friendly pub, and a pizza place with outdoor dining. Go have fun! Crossroads of Hwy E and Hwy A.

N ORTHPORT

You go to Northport for one of two reasons: to catch one of the Washington Island ferries, or to see the famed “curvy road” that leads to Northport. Going to the Island is the start of a trip that brings you to the county’s only year-round island community, where you can explore 35 square miles and over 100 miles of roads. Still feeling stressed from your non-vacation life? Try some “Island Time”!

Fish boils are Door County’s only indigenous dish, brought to the Peninsula by Scandinavian immigrants.

Our Masterboiler slices fresh fish into chunks, then boils it with baby red potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn on the cob and sweet onions.

The fish boil kettle is brought to a boil over an open fire… when the fish is cooked to perfection, a small amount of kerosene is poured into the base of the fire. The result? A spectacular burst of flames and the famous boil-over that leaves the food ready to be immediately served at your table inside the restaurant.

Fish, potatoes, and onions served with fresh lemons, melted butter, coleslaw, corn bread and Door County cherry pie.

On Deck and L.L.Bean: A Natural Partnership

hen Mitch Larson set out last fall to explore Michigan’s lakefront retail scene, he wasn’t expecting to stumble on an opportunity to reshape On Deck Clothing’s future. He was visiting stores similar to his own, observing and gathering ideas. One store caught his attention: The Outpost in Holland, Michigan.

“I walked in, and there was an L.L.Bean department,” Mitch recalls. “I’ve known the owner and buyer for years, and asked her, ‘How did you get L.L.Bean?’ She told me they were selected as a prototype and that’s when I started the process to get approved ourselves.”

Four months later, On Deck became one of the first stores in Wisconsin to carry L.L.Bean as part of its growing wholesale initiative.

Photo ©2025 Stephen Wolter

L.L.Bean’s decision to expand beyond its brick-and-mortar locations and into select specialty stores is a significant shift. Since its founding in 1912, it has built a reputation for high-quality, functional outdoor gear, staying true to its origins as a company created by a hunter and fisherman.

For On Deck, a Door County staple for nearly 40 years, the collaboration felt natural. General Manager Mert Larsen sees striking similarities. “Both brands have stayed true to their roots in quality, function, and the outdoors.”

Starting this spring, On Deck customers will find a curated selection of L.L.Bean products in all locations. The rollout will be gradual, with spaces showcasing men’s, women’s, and kids’ apparel, footwear, and accessories. “Customers will find all the iconic pieces, as well as new collections,” Mitch explains. “By fall, we’ll have an even bigger presence.”

Mert Larsen said the ability to try on products in-store will be a game changer. “People already know and love L.L.Bean,” she says. “Now they can walk into On Deck and try things on in person. And we’ll have access to their inventory. If a customer needs a specific size or style, we can have it in a few days.”

Another key advantage is how seamlessly L.L.Bean’s outdoor heritage fits into On Deck’s family-oriented philosophy. “L.L.Bean is the perfect addition to our own vision,” said Mert. “Their pieces are functional, classic, designed to last. They fit right into our customers’ lifestyle.”

Being chosen as one of the first stores in Wisconsin to carry L.L.Bean speaks to On Deck’s reputation and longevity. “They wanted retailers who are open year-round and have a strong history in their community,” said Mitch. “We’re honored to be part of that.”

There’s also a personal connection, said Mert. “I grew up with L.L.Bean. Now, we get to bring that experience to Door County. “And this is just the beginning,” said Mitch. “We’re excited to see where it goes.” — Bree Kotwitz

How many art and design careers were ultimately launched by the famed Peninsula School of Art, you may wonder? One such artist is Russ Zabler, who was taking PenArt photography classes back in the late 1960s and went on to take his rst Metal Arts class in 1972. e year 2025 marks Russ’s 53rd year creating unique jewelry designs.

“Jewelry had lit a re in me,” Russ said recently. First, he worked at a trade shop doing jewelry repair and custom work on Jeweler’s Row in downtown Chicago at 5 N. Wabash. He subsequently took over the business and ran it for seven and a half years, all while pursuing his own work in summer art shows. In 1983, Russ bought his current Ephraim shop and remade it into Zabler Design Jewelers. A year later, he also acquired his store in the Chicago area, in Clarendon Hills, Illinois.

We do custom everyday!

As always, the two stores o er countless alternatives for engagement rings, from antique diamond rings to peach-pink sapphire to morganite and rose gold combinations. Russ simply has an original and inventive way to inspire clients with a curated selection.

Today, Russ Zabler’s motivation remains the same as when he started out in the business. “Honestly, I just love the connections I get to make with individuals, and being able to work with beautifully colored gems and rare objects.”

H.R. Holand (1872-1963)

A Fifty-Year Reminiscense

Written by Author

Holand in 1948... Remembering Door County As It Was in 1898

Dock, Fish Creek, 1887

It is fifty years this summer since I first saw the Door Peninsula. I was then a student at the University of Wisconsin and thought that the Madison surroundings were about as beautiful as could be found anywhere. But that was before I had seen northern Door County.

Over on the eastern edge of Wisconsin lay a long peninsula between Green Bay and Lake Michigan which on the map looked like a very cozy corner. Not only its insular location, but also its local names fascinated me. Especially did I like Ephraim, because it had the flavor of old, patriarchal history. I laid plans to visit this norther part of the Peninsula.

About the first of August, 1898, I arrived in Green Bay on my bicycle and started northward. Upon arriving in Sturgeon Bay, I went to the Court House to consult the best county maps to get “the lay of the land.”

Gibraltar Historical Archives

The highway northward to Fish Creek was just a narrow, stony lane with shapeless stone fences and brush on both sides. In the fields also were big stone piles, and most of the dwellings were log houses. The farmers were hauling in oats, some with horses, but many with ox teams.

Eventually I arrived in Fish Creek where every man apparently was a fisherman. I went down to a rickety pier, where a small steamer was just putting off. A few moments later a farmer rushed up, but came too late, as the steamer was now a hundred feet away. He looked so forlorn, I felt called upon to comfort him. To my surprise he offered to take me to [Ephraim].

[W]e set out, he in his buggy, and I on my bicycle. It was a most wretched road with a succession of mud holes and stony knolls, and scraggy woods on both sides almost all the way. The drive to North Bay seemed endless as it was necessary to go by way of Baileys

Eagle Bluff, 1887

Harbor, and then through the gloomy swamps northeast of it.

I coasted down the last hill to the beach opposite Ephraim. There it lay, a charming little village with every house painted white, against a background of bright green evergreens on the steep hillside behind it! Nowhere had I seen a village that could compare with it in beauty of location (and now, after fifty years of rambles in many states and countries, I can still say the same).

Filled with elation at finding anything so perfect in a pioneer region, I traveled onward until I came to a store, operated by a dour old Dane, named Jacob Smith. From him I learned that practically every family in the village was Norwegian.

At that time there were practically no tourists in northern Door County, and Ephraim in summer was then as quiet as it now is in winter. It was reported that a stove manufacturer from Chicago had started to build a palatial summer home in Fish Creek at the fabulous cost of $3500! The price of labor then was one dollar for a ten-hour day, or fifteen dollars for a month including board. But the dollar had a much greater buying power then than now. My dinner in Sturgeon Bay cost me twenty-five cents and included soup, roast beef, four vegetables, bread and butter, apple pie and two cups of coffee. Tipping was unknown.

Back in the 1890s, farming represented more hard work and less pay than at any other time except in the 1870s when the grasshoppers ravaged the fields. Land was therefore very cheap. Most of the farmers had large woodlots and they squeezed a little income out of these. But a cord, and those three dollars represented a terrible lot of heavy labor. The fishermen did a little better even though the price of herring was only one and a half cents per pound. Long pound-nets lined the whole shore of Door County.

I once more mounted my wheel and pedaled back to Eagle Cliff. I sought out a spot on the top of the northern slope, and here

I stretched at full length to muse on my riches. It was good land as was shown by the big growth of the many different kinds of trees around me. But what was far better was its location on the shore of Green Bay, which with its islands, promontories and rock-rimmed bays presented so many delightful vistas.

Best of all, however, was the noble cliff of white limestone, rising straight up to a height of more than two hundred feet, with green cedars springing from its fissures, and surmounted by towering pines and oaks centuries old. What would not a Chicago capitalist give to have such a timber-clad cliff in or near Chicago? But I had no desire to see it transported to Chicago, and there get vast riches by its sale, even if some supernatural power would take care of the transportation. I wanted it to be right where it was, far from noisy crowds, a sanctuary for me and my future family for all time. I felt like a supremely happy millionnaire (if there be such a one).

Thus ended my first visit to paradise. — H.R. Holand (1948)

Old Dog

Toward the last in the morning she could not get up, even when I rattled her pan.

I helped her into the yard, but she stumbled and fell. I knew it was time.

The last night a mist drifted over the fields.

In the morning she would not raise her head–the far, clear mountains we had walked surged back to mind.

We looked a slow bargain: our days together were the ones we had already had.

I gave her something the vet had given, and patted her still, a good last friend.

Preservation of the Little

When the 102-year-old Little Sister Resort was sold in 2020, its 24 buildings were slated for demolition, including the Little Sister Barn, and the end of that chapter of Sister Bay History was nearly written.

The property and the buildings were beloved in Sister Bay, and they had a storied beginning. In 1870, a Norwegian immigrant, Gunnar Endreson, had purchased 108 acres of wild timber land along the shores of Little Sister Bay. He did not have the cash, so the deal was done for five hundred and fifty bushels of potatoes, valued at 75 cents per bushel, to be delivered over a three-year period – a value of $412.50

Grant Anderson, one of Gunnar’s sons, eventually bought the property, and after fishing and farming, he turned to the budding tourist market. In 1918, Grant and his wife Lydia started a “resort” by lodging and feeding a few guests at their farmhouse. The following year, he built the structure now known as the Little Sister Barn to help support the farm and resort.

The sale of this historic property in 2020 marked the end of a unique Door County resort, but the beginning of a remarkable preservation effort.

Sister Barn

Concerned that this piece of history could end in a landfill, a small group formed and quickly saw two important possibilities: the use of the Little Sister Barn by the Sister Bay Historical Society, and the preservation of a number of the resort cabins and other buildings to meet the chronic need for local employee housing.

The Sister Bay Historical Society had been planning for some time to build a new barn on its 6-acre museum property, the Corner of the Past, to expand its exhibit and event space. With the availability of the Little Sister Barn, the historical society shifted its plans and formed a fundraising team to help move the Little Sister Barn to its property and convert it to a year-round History Center.

A grassroots fundraising effort quickly took off and included a wide variety of supporters – locals who fondly remembered the resort, and the barn dances and other activities that had taken place at the Barn; friends from outside Door County; and even the

Village of Sister Bay itself.

Since the Barn was moved, additional fundraising –including a grant from Destination Door County’s Community Investment Fund

– has helped secure the Barn on a new foundation and weatherize it in preparation for its next phase, the repurposing of the interior.

Plans for this historic structure include retaining a portion of the rustic interior, while adding more contemporary, climate-controlled space for educational programs, community events, historic exhibits, and digital archives. The fundraising for this next phase is now under way.

“It takes a village to pull off something this extraordinary,” said John Lijewski, Sister Bay Historical Society board president, “and we’re inspired by the community’s continued support for this remarkable preservation effort.”

As one who has long been interested in the history of Wisconsin— especially its farm and rural communities— I applaud what the society is planning and am especially pleased that it is finding a new, exciting purpose for this magnificent old barn.”

Preserving a 126-Acre Family Legacy

Following in the footsteps of Emma Toft and Jens Jensen, people who understood the ecological bounty and pristine beauty of Door County, the Redmann-Smith family has taken steps to protect sensitive wetlands and preserve the ancient Niagara Escarpment by selling 126 acres to the town of Gibraltar for parkland adjoining the Fish Creek Park to the upper bluff.

“This agreement aligns with our goals to develop housing to attract younger generations to the community, fortify declining enrollments, enlarge the school tax base, and help those looking to downsize, all with acres of recreation land for public use,” Ken Smith said.

Town board administrator, Travis Thyssen, galvanized a legislative win to bring public sewer to the sanitary district and spearheaded a campaign to acquire the 126 acres strictly by grants and donations. Plans are in the works to connect nearby towns via a multimodal trail.

Marise and John

This story began in 1959 when Andrew and Elsie Redmann fell in love with Door County and purchased the Lakewood Lodge, giving it the name the White Gull Inn and starting the fish boils where Elsie’s sister, Frances, played accordion for guests.

The Redmann couple then purchased a nearby orchard and branched into cherry farming. Aunt Frances took possession of the adjoining farm, connecting the upper portion of Fish Creek to downtown, protecting the creek that gave the town its name.

The heyday of cherry production on the decline, Andrew found inspiration in a stack of weathered barn wood and started oil painting his signa -

ture “Woodshed Series.” This sparked the idea to create an artist Settlement, and with the help of nephew John Martinsek they refurbished the tractor barns, calling them The Settlement Galleries, where many artists got their start.

Elsie joined the school board, helped with public health initiatives, was a member of the Fish Creek Women’s Club, and worked at the post office and library. In the ’70s, Elsie became a real estate broker, calling her business Redmann Realty, becoming an entrusted collaborator with those wanting to put down roots.

Andy’s creative ventures continued with multiple projects like running the Lake Cinema movie theater in Baileys Harbor where, as teens, my brother and I made popcorn and sold tickets. He also designed the Door County flag, the Common House, (now Chives), and the Forestville St. Peter’s Church stain-glass window, among other projects. With a zoning change, Andy and Elsie re-envisioned the farm property to create recreation, housing, and commercial areas. This started the building of the Settlement Courtyard Inn in 1984. While working on phase two they both were diagnosed with cancer and passed away. My siblings and I committed to carrying on the business with my brother John eventually taking the helm.

John was a character in his own right. A musician, he started playing in Marvin and the Dogs, a popular local dance band in the ’80s, and with The Booze Brothers out of Milwaukee. He was instrumental in the start of the Fish Creek Winter Festival and Mountainbike Madness which was held on our farm.

The Settlement Courtyard Inn

John and I, along with our team, created Half Mile Bridge Condominium on a small portion of the property. John also was a supervisor on the town board. Always ready with a smirk and wisecrack, he was generous with his time and highly regarded by many. An ice-boating accident took his life at age 38 and altered the course of the family legacy yet again.

I jumped back into the inn leadership with my husband, Ken, and an amazing staff, adding the Lavender Spa while continuing to choreograph dance projects, perform music, and write for local publications. Our goal was to steward the inn until we could securely hand it off to a new family. In 2018, the Gallant Family bought the inn, allowing my family to then decide how best to conserve the surrounding land.

With the town’s acquisition of the 126 acres, we’ll preserve the land’s beauty and environmental riches for generations of people to fall in love with Door County.

Three Summer Shows & “The Bachelors” 25th

Northern Sky Theater has you covered for a quintessential Door County experience. Take your pick from two unparalleled venues: an amphitheater of towering cedars under the stars in Peninsula State Park, or the state-ofthe-art Gould Theater, set on forty wooded acres in Fish Creek. In 2025, Northern Sky will present three summer shows outdoors running June - August: Something in the Water (a world premiere, where nothing is as it seems), Dairy Heirs (a home-grown fan favorite), and No Bones About It (where there’s smoke, there’s laughter!).

In the fall, the troupe moves indoors to the Gould Theater to present The Bachelors (celebrating its 25th anniversary). No matter the venue, you’ll see the original musical plays that led the Chicago Tribune to call Northern Sky “one of the most exceptional professional troupes in the country.”

Rogue Theater

Rogue Theater – DC’s Community Troupe

A hidden treasure, Rogue Theater performs at DC Arts Center in Sturgeon Bay. The group’s 13th season opens with The Hallelujah Girls , a comedy that reminds us of the importance of good friends, and not taking life so seriously we forget to laugh and love. Hate Mail , a comedy by Bill Corbett and Kira Obolensky, is a parody of “Love Letters” featuring hilarious correspondence between its two characters. Next up is The Odd Couple: the Female Version . Unger and Madison are at it again…Florence and Olive, in the female version of Neil Simon’s classic. The Tin Woman by Sean Grennan opens in the fall. Reeling after a heart transplant, Joy contacts the donor’s family. A meeting results in tears, laughter, healing. Next is An Audition for Murder, in which a theatre group holds auditions — one of the actors dies and an Inspector must ask the right questions to solve the case. Fall closes with The Unexpected Man by Yasmina Reza . Two strangers, united by book and by chance, with a fortuitous accident that might mean new hope — if only they look up from their lives. The year ends with Dashing Through the Snow, a family Christmas comedy!
