Looking Forward to Race Day I have never run a half marathon – I have not even attempted to – but I admire all those who do, and I love being a spectator. The common goal of those running, combined with their friends and families lined up along the course to cheer and encourage them, is something to behold.

I’m looking forward to this year’s Door County Half Marathon and Nicolet Bay 5K, cheering on the runners and spending some time in the park with friends, family and our community. I’m looking forward to celebrating a run in Peninsula State Park with all of you.

Races are a celebration of the human spirit: a demonstration of humanity’s resolve to overcome a challenge and to push physical and mental capacities to another level.

I’ve watched more than 30 marathons, dozens of half marathons and all sorts of other races. I’ve always walked away from them inspired by those who had crossed the finish line, by those who had not but had tried, and by the volunteers and spectators who had cheered on their friends and family members as well as strangers.

Every year the Door County community has continued to do what it does best: host and serve its visitors. The county has been a vacation destination for more than 100 years, and its businesses and local residents are proud of their long-standing tradition of excellence.

So many people have made the race possible, and there are so many people to thank. Thanks to Peninsula State Park for hosting the event. Thanks to all of our sponsors and our community for embracing the event, and special thanks, most of all, to the volunteers who have been working from dawn until dusk simply for the pride of putting on a great event in their hometown community.

A half marathon is a test of will and endurance – a test of the human spirit. Those who attempt to complete it and those who do are to be admired. It is a demonstration of what humanity is capable of accomplishing.

2018 RACE WINNERS

The Door County Half Marathon will start at 10 am Saturday, May 4. Runners should allow 10 – 15 minutes to walk from the Runners’ Concourse to the starting line on Shore Rd.

Madison’s Katelynn Williams paced the women with a time of 1:28:43.

HALF MARATHON

The entire half marathon is run on paved surfaces in Peninsula State Park. The U.S. Track and Field certified course starts and finishes near Nicolet Beach. The course takes runners past breathtaking views of Green Bay, shaded areas through the woods, challenging hills and ever-changing scenery through one of Wisconsin’s most beautiful parks.

Rodee Schneider won the Door County Half Marathon for the third time in 2018. The Madison resident finished in 1:16:25.

Of the 1,472 runners who finished the 2018 race, 844 were women.

Another 737 runners took part in the Nicolet Bay 5k, with Mark Caballero of Milwaukee taking first in 16:16.

Anna Gray of Green Bay paced the women in 18:29, a new course record.

MP3 players are allowed for the race, but sorry, no dogs or strollers are allowed on the course due to space and safety concerns. Walkers are welcome and should plan to finish by the time the course opens to traffic at 1:30 pm.

Walkers should be aware that if your pace is slower than 16 minutes per mile, not all course amenities may be available later in the race, since time constraints require us to break down aid stations to re-open the park roads.

All half marathon participants receive a long-sleeve race shirt, a finisher’s medal, and food and drink (including beer from One Barrel Brewing Co. and kombucha from Tapuat Kombucha!) in the Runners’ Concourse area. Runners also receive a drink ticket good for a beer or root beer at five of our sponsor restaurants (see postrace party details).

NICOLET BAY 5K The Nicolet Bay 5k begins at 10:15 am, just after the start of the half marathon. The starting line is also on Shore Road, but a few hundred yards from the start of the half marathon.

Half Marathon Helps Keep Park Well-groomed The Door County Half Marathon is proud to have contributed to the purchase of a new trail groomer for Peninsula State Park. The new groomer was put to great use this winter keeping miles of ski trails in great shape throughout the season.

The Friends of Peninsula State Park purchased the groomer with help from $8,000 from the Friends Trails Fund; $5,000 from the Door County Half Marathon, a grant from the Raibrook Foundation, plus gifts from the Door County Silent Sports Alliance, Edge of Park, Shallows Resort, and generous donations from two anonymous individuals.

The trails we love to run, ride, and ski on in Peninsula State Park could not be maintained without the hours of volunteer time from the Friends of Peninsula State Park and the generous contributions from individuals, businesses, and organizations that recognize the value of our open spaces.

Your 2019 Half Marathon Finishers’ Medal The Door County Half Marathon finishers’ medals are designed by race co-founder David Eliot and include the race logo on the front, with the date and the tagline “a run in Peninsula State Park” engraved on the back. All half marathon finishers get this medal at the finish line!

Runners of the half marathon also receive a long-sleeve tech race shirt, while 5k finishers receive a short-sleeve tech shirt. All runners will get a free beer from One Barrel Brewing Co. and free Tapuat Kombucha at the finish line party.

Thank you for participating in the 12th annual Door County Half Marathon and Nicolet Bay 5k. Here’s a quick guide to make your run preparation as easy as possible. Good luck!

FRIDAY, MAY 3 • Packet Pickup will be held at a new location in 2019 to make the experience as seamless as possible. The Packet Pickup and Expo will be held at the Baileys Harbor Town Hall at the corner of County F and Highway 57 , from 1 – 9 pm. (Packet pickup on Saturday is at Nicolet Bay inside the park). Get official Door County Half Marathon gear at the expo, or shop for great gear from Run Away Shoes.

• Purchase annual ($28 for WI plates, $38 for out-of-state plates) or daily ($10, $13) park stickers at Packet Pickup if you plan to drive to the park. Pay by cash or check only.

SATURDAY, MAY 4 • The Door County Half Marathon begins at 10 am. The starting line is near the boat launch. (See map.)

SHUTTLE SCHEDULE Saturday, May 4 Shuttles will do a one-time pick up for guests at designated lodging sponsors at 8 am. Additional shuttles will run continuously from our Park and Ride locations, Skyway Drive-in and Gibraltar School in Fish Creek, from 8 am – 3:30 pm. It is about a 20 minute ride from any of our stops to the Runners’ Concourse inside the park. • There are two ways to get to Peninsula State Park, carpool or ride the shuttle (see shuttle stops and times on the Shuttle Schedule).

• If you carpool you must have an annual or daily Wisconsin State Park parking sticker. Annual stickers are available at both the Fish Creek and Ephraim park entrances. The Fish Creek entrance is only open until 9 am. We suggest that you purchase your annual sticker before race day to avoid delays. Daily stickers are available at packet pickup on Friday or at the Fish Creek or Ephraim entrances. Parking is limited.

• Both participants and spectators may ride the shuttle to the park.

Sorry, dogs are not allowed on the shuttles. Please see the schedule for details.

• Plan to arrive at Peninsula State Park between 8 and 9:15 am to avoid delays getting to the starting line. You may use the Fish Creek entrance until 9 am. The Ephraim entrance will remain open. Park Greeters will assist you at each entrance.

• At 9:45 am all course roads inside the park will be closed to all traffic except shuttle buses and emergency vehicles. All roads will re-open at 1:30 pm.

AFTER YOU ARRIVE IN THE PARK At the Runner’s Concourse • The Runners’ Concourse is located near Nicolet Beach. Here you will find Packet Pickup, Gear Check, Merchandise, Pace Team info, concessions, and bathrooms.

• Porta-johns will be located in the Runners’ Concourse as well as near the starting line and just before each aid station.

• Your cell phone may not work in the park. Designate a location to meet with family and friends after the race.

• The starting line for the Door County Half Marathon is roughly a half mile from the Runner’s Concourse. Please give yourself 15 minutes to walk from the concourse to the starting line and find your spot in the starting chute. Slower runners and walkers should start near the back of the pack.

On the course • Porta-johns will be located at the starting line and just before each aid station.

• The safest place to warm up for the half marathon is on the course from the finish line to the two-mile mark. This section of the course will be closed early to all traffic.

• Aid stations will have water and original Gatorade. Caffeinefree vanilla and berry Clif Shot Gel packs will be available at the aid station located near mile 8. Medical personnel will be on site.

PLAY YOUR MUSIC - BUT FOR YOURSELF

We know that music helps get many runners to the finish line faster, but we ask you to respect the experience of your fellow runners.

Keep your volume to a reasonable level so that those who want to enjoy their run in the park can do so without hearing your mix (we know it’s awesome...for you). And certainly do not use speakers that project your music beyond your eardrums.

Be considerate and mindful of other runners and help everyone have a great experience on the course!

Important race notes • Running with another person’s bib is not allowed.

• Your timing chip is affixed to your bib. To ensure that your race time is recorded, bibs must be affixed to the front of your torso and should not be covered by another layer of clothing.

Affixing your bib to the side of your shorts or your back greatly reduces reliability of the timing chip.

• If you do not run in the race that you signed up for, your results will not be valid.

• For the safety of all runners, strollers and dogs are not allowed on the course in either race. Runners on the course with strollers or dogs will be removed from the course by race officials.

After the race • Half marathoners will receive their finisher’s medals in the finish shute. Participants should proceed to the Runners’ Tent for water, Gatorade, food, race results, and bag pickup. This is also where you can claim your free beer from One Barrel Brewing Co. and unlimited free kombucha from Sister Bay’s Tapuat Kombucha!

• Athletic trainers from Door County Medical Center will be stationed at the Door County Medical Center Tent in the Runners’ Concourse.

• Awards ceremony for overall winners only for 5k will be at 11:15am. Please make sure to check the results board to see if you’re an age group winner (1st, 2nd & 3rd) and pick up your award at the awards table.

• Awards ceremony for overall winners and male & female masters only for the half marathon will be at 12:30pm. Please make sure to check the results board to see if you’re an age group winner (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, & 5th) and pick up your award at the awards table.

• Open Tab will provide live music from 11 am - 2 pm.

• The final shuttle leaves the concourse at 2:30 pm and the post-race party will move to Husby’s in Sister Bay, where there will be live music from Dirty Deuce at the outdoor garage bar in the afternoon.

TAKE PRECAUTIONS FOR YOUR MEDICAL CARE To facilitate care in case of an emergency or other event we ask that you provide basic medical information on the back of your race bib. In the case of an emergency, seconds count!

Please take a moment to write your name, address, and emergency contact information on the back of your runner’s bib. If you have any significant health issues, allergies, or are taking medications, please list them as well. This is an important first step in providing pertinent information that will expedite decision making and care on your behalf.

We hope we never have to make use of this information, but if we do, it will help our staff provide you with the best care possible.

Runner Recovery Tips from Dr. Rory Johnson Dr. Rory Johnson, primary care/family medicine provider at Door County Medical Center Clinic Fish Creek, is medical director of the Door County Half Marathon. Here are some tips from Dr. Johnson for a speedy post-race recovery: ● Fuel. Have a light snack within 20 minutes. A four to one carbohydrate to protein ratio is ideal, such as banana with peanut butter or yogurt and granola. The evening after your run, have a decent meal balancing protein, carbs and fat. ● Stretch. Within 30 minutes of finishing your run, stretch for 10-15 minutes, focusing on major muscle groups, with extra attention to any areas that felt sore during the event. ● Hydrate. Within first 10-15 minutes, drink plenty of water or electrolyte drink, and keep up water intake for the rest of the day. “Even if the temperature is cool, you’ll lose lots of fluid. The Starting Line: While the Starting line can be accessed via Shore Road from the Runners’ Concourse, it is recommended that spectators walk the trail along Nicolet Bay to reduce congestion in the Eagle Harbor starting chute. The starting line is a 10 - 15 minute raim walk from the Runners’ ph E Concourse.

3. Mile 6/10 intersection: Get to this viewing spot by taking Sunset Trail from the Runner’s Concourse to Bluff Road. Cross Bluff Road, making sure not to interrupt runners and follow the signs down Hemlock Road. (Please stay to the right side of the cones when heading to the 6/10 intersection and on the left when returning from the 6/10 intersection.) This viewing spot is about three-quarters of a mile from the Runners’ Concourse, and spectators should allow 15-20 minutes to walk to the intersection of Hemlock and Skyline Roads.

From here, you can catch runners twice, first as they speed down the hill of Skyline Road near mile six, then again as they make the turn to the homestretch at mile 10.

PLEASE NOTE: Dogs must be on a leash at all times! Along the course and at the finish line, please keep dogs off the course and in the grass off the side of the road.

From the Runners’ Concourse, it will be about a half mile to the viewing location, so spectators should allow for 10-15 minutes to make this walk. (Be aware of the pace at which the runner you would like to see is running, it could be difficult to catch them at mile two.) The half marathon runners will pass this spot once more just before mile 11.

4. The Finish Line: Located near the Runners’ Concourse, the Finish Line is on Shore Road. Line the finish chute and make some noise to propel runners through their final strides. (This is also the finish line for the Nicolet Bay 5k.)

GETTING TO THE STARTING LINE Highway 42 is closed to through traffic due to ongoing construction between Moravia Street and Brookside Lane, but that won't stop you from getting to the starting line in time.

From Sister Bay: Your best route is to take Highway 57 south to West Meadow Road (the next right after Grove Road), then right on Maple Grove East Road, then straight onto County F, which you can take to Highway 42, then take a left and proceed straight to the Fish Creek entrance of Peninsula State Park. OR, you can take a right off of County F onto County A to Highway 42, where you can take a right and enter the park via the Ephraim entrance by the golf course.

From north Ephraim: For those staying in north Ephraim, you can get around the construction by taking a left off of Highway 42 onto Moravia Street, then another left on Anderson Lane, then a right on Norway Street, then another right on German Rd, then a left on Hoganson Lane, a right on Larson Lane, a right on Brookdale Lane, then left on Highway 42 to the Ephraim entrance of Peninsula State Park by the golf course.

Winter Fun at the Door County Pond Hockey Tournament Registration opens soon for the 2020 Door County Pond Hockey Tournament, a favorite of hockey players throughout the midwest. The tournament welcomed a record 54 teams to the ice on Kangaroo Lake in 2019.

Up to 60 teams will compete in six divisions for the Stanley Thermos Feb. 8, 2020. The event features a pleasure rink for skating, a warming tent for spectators, and fire pits on the ice. Enjoy food and beverages, a full day of hockey action, and great post-tournament fun in Baileys Harbor.

PACERS & RUNNERS

Check Your PACE Pace team on hand to guide runners Pacers will be on hand at the Door County Half Marathon to help guide runners to a successful finish. Meet our pacers at the Pace Team tent at the expo Friday and at the runner’s concourse before the race. You’ll find them at the starting line holding signs with their goal finish times on them.

The team is organized by Krista Eliot, a veteran of 40 marathons and experienced member of both New Balance and Nike pace teams. Eliot said the pace team’s goal is to help runners finish within one minute of the goal time. “We’re here to help you, provide encouragement and support for runners to keep that finish goal in sight,” Eliot said.

The hills of the race challenge runners, especially if you have not done any hill training for the race.

Runners should not necessarily expect pacers to run at the exact same pace throughout the race.

Pace team members aim to maintain their prescribed pace up the hills, but there will likely be a slower pace going uphill, and faster going downhill. They will also slow or stop at aid stations, with slower pace teams taking slightly more time.

MyTEAM TRIUMPH Makes the Impossible, Possible The Door County Half Marathon is proud to welcome three inspiring captains from MyTEAM TRIUMPH this year.

MyTEAM TRIUMPH is a non-profit athletic mentoring program created for people with disabilities who would normally be unable to participate in endurance events.

Teams of “Angels” help their captain athlete complete races by pushing them in specialized wheelchairs, pulling them behind bikes, and swimming with them in rafts to complete half marathons, triathlons, cycling events, and endurance events short and long.

When you see them on the course, don’t be shy showing your support for these amazing athletes and their Angels running with them to get them to the finish line!

Brian Fitzgerald is the co-founder of the Peninsula Pacers, organizers of the Door County Half Marathon, the Peninsula Century Rides, Door County Pond Hockey Tournament, Hey Hey 5k, and the Door County Beer Festival. He handles course and aid station operations for the MS Challenge Walk, and is the bike and run course director of the Door County Triathlon.

An avid outdoor enthusiast, Brian loves to ski, run and bike throughout the peninsula, doing them all much faster than he drives. He lives in Ephraim with his wife, Tracey, and his two children, Ben and Abbey.

A writer and editor for the Peninsula Pulse and Door County Living, and a co-founder of Peninsula Filmworks, he spends most days telling the stories of Door County in print, on the web, and in video. A 3-time marathon finisher, he lives in Sister Bay with his wife Anne, where he spends far too much time on his garage bar.

Co-founder and Publisher of the Peninsula Pulse and Door County Living magazine, David has lived in Door County for 23 years. A co-founder of the Peninsula Pacers – organizers of the Door County Half Marathon, Door County Beer Festival, Door County Pond Hockey Tournament, Peninsula Century Ride and the Ride for Nature to benefit the Ridges Sanctuary – he is also a member of the Door County Triathlon Board.

From high school service clubs to business owners and from church groups to visitors who just want to be a part of the event, we get to spend the week with some of the best people in our community and beyond.

More than 200 volunteers help us put this event together each May, and no matter what we throw at them, they respond with enthusiasm and a smile. We can’t thank them enough.

JONI WITALISON Volunteer Coordinator Joni Witalison is a Door County native who lives in Fish Creek with her husband Gary. She is a mother of four (Dalton, Travis, Brady, and Allura).

She helps coordinate volunteers in Girl Scouting, at the Door Community Auditorium as well as other Pacers events, and owns her own salon, A Cut Above, in Fish Creek.

LAURA FITZGERALD Race Shuttle Coordinator

Eliot has paced for both the New Balance and Nike pace teams for 11 years, including the Chicago Marathon. She has qualified for and completed 13 Boston Marathons with a marathon PR of 3.09. She lives in Baileys Harbor with her husband, race co-founder David Eliot.

Laura has been calling Door County home since moving from Minnesota in 1989. From May to October you will find her managing the crew at Wilson’s Restaurant & Ice Cream Parlor. After raising her three daughters in Door County, she has recently become a snowbird, spending time in Florida. Along with hiking, biking, and an occasional game of pickleball, Laura also enjoys reading, photography, traveling and a great cup of coffee!

JUSTIN BURRESS Aid Station Director Justin Burress is in his fourth year as Aid Station Director, making sure runners are fueled on the course. Burress is also a 6th grade teacher and the varsity boys basketball coach at Gibraltar School. He lives in Sister Bay with his wife Jordan and their three kids.

BRIAN LARSON Course Assistant Brian Larson is a fifth generation Door County resident whose grandmother grew up in Peninsula State Park. A skilled custom carpenter, Lar-

son loves to play basketball and golf. He has two children, Catherine and Jack.

LARS JOHNSON Door County Half Marathon Co-founder Lars is co-owner of Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant. He has completed 15 marathons, including the Boston Marathon in 2003, and was integral in the formation of the Door County Half Marathon.

He lives in Sister Bay with his wife, Jill. They have two sons, Bjorn and Thor.
